30GB Dock Connector Changed?

I currently have a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (B&W screen, click wheel). I am considering replacing it with a 30GB iPod Photo. Was there a change in the dock connector location, such that dock accessories for one won't fit the other? I know that the iPod Photo is a tiny bit thicker, but most 3rd party accessory manufacturers say that their products will fit both... except for Dension:

http://www.densionusa.com/support-center/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=3&id=95
Thickness is not a problem, as the Dension Icelink cradle comes with spacers to fit the 4G 20GB, 40GB Photo, and 60GB Photo. However, Dension claims that their cradle will not fit the 30GB Photo because of a change in the dock connector location. Thanks for any insight on this.

Hi Matt (and everyone else
I have just purchased a Dension icelink cable. My worry was the fit to my car headunit...(which I'm still waiting to see when it arrives). After a bit more research, I have just been reading all the suspected problems with an Ipod 30gb photo and the cradle! :O
Your post says this combination works fine - which is great news. Where are you based though? I'm in the UK. It could be a different fit for other places?
If you or anyone else can confirm I would be most grateful!
Thanks in advance!

  • Has the dock connector changed?

I'm wanting to connect to the socket on the bottom of my video iPod (I believe that's 5th generation) but the accessory says it works with 3rd generation. The information dates back to mid 2004, but it does not say "3rd generation or later" just "3rd generation" (which may have been the current model back then!) Is my connector the same as that used on 3rd generation and since - i.e. will the plug fit?

No. I live in Norway. I have an MB, but it is not fitted with iPod connector or anything. I plugged the dock into the same connection as the CD changer on the back of the Sony using a splitter with flip to change from CD changer to iPod. The splitter i bought in an electronic shop for under £10

  • No sound through dock connector

I have a 20GB 4G iPod I've been using in my car w/ a DICE unit. No problems until 2 days ago. I also have an iPhone so I've been testing it out w/ my existing accessories. I connected it to my DICE and it didn't work, no surprise. Then I reattached my 4G and it didn't work anymore.
I then tried the 4G in a universal dock that supports it. I used the line out to my stereo. No more sound. The headphone jack works fine and I can charge/sync it w/ my Mac and a power adapter. Seems something happened to the audio portion of the dock connector.
In order to rule out the DICE being broken, I took a Ziplinq dock to 3.5mm cable and connected it to the AUX input of my stereo. Still no sound.
I've reset the 4G about 10 times and no change. I haven't done a restore but now I'm wondering if the audio portion of the dock connector is simply broke. I can't imagine that a restore would fix this.

I've the same problem with my iPod 30GB.
When connecting my stereo through the headphone output it works fine. But with the iPod universal dock no sound....
I've reset and restored the iPod a couple of times. Without success.
    Has anybody has a solution?

  • Dock connector in different location?!

Is the dock connector to the 2nd generation iPod in a different location? I just bought a brand new Ipod 8gb nano and two docking stations that are "ipod nano compatible" for a co-worker. To my dismay, I can't dock the ipod. Do I have a defective unit or has Apple actually changed the location of the connector, thereby rendering all first generation accessories useless?
I am just stunned at the moment. I wish apple would advertise this little fact...

The 8Gb nano has different overall dimensions, as you found out, so many of the accessories that were designed for the nano won't be compatible (e.g. the nano dock, headphones such as the Lanyard headphones, etc. - anything that is based on the original spacing between the speaker jack and the connector and case.
As for the dock, there is a hack, although not an easy one. It turns out that the dock comes apart very easily, and if you machine the slot on the plastic cover to be about 1/8 inch wider (on one side only) and put it back together, it works fine. I used a dremel tool and mine turned out pretty good.

  • Frozen screens - iPod with dock connector

My ipod freezes up whenever it is disconnected from the computer. The Ok to disconnect doesn't go away. If I perform a reset, the apple logo doesn't disappear. I have restored my ipod many times to no avail. I can synch songs to it, and even play them off the ipod when its attatched to the computer if i use (gasp!) realplayer. I can put it in disk mode and hook it up to the computer, itunes seems to think the ipod is ok. I'm not gonna spend 250 bucks to fix this thing, can anyone help? It seems like it still works, it just hangs up on something.

I am having the same issue and was hoping that I might find a cure or the reason behind this prob. I have an ipod w/ dock connector, it works fine when in use with my inmotion speaker system (with ac, not sure if anything happens on battery), when I bring it to the car and use the ipod hooked up to car stereo using a aux jack on stereo, the ipod will play for 1,2,xx # of songs and then shut down. I do have a power source for the ipod in the car, using the 12v/cig lighter outlet which will powerup the 'pod, but creates a whine that is annoying. At first I thougt it might be the drastic change from use in a warm to cold enviornment?
Anyone with any ideas as to what is causing this??

  • 5th generation iPod with 3rd generation dock connector?

    hello,
I have a 30GB 3rd generation iPod, which is now a totally crammed... so I am planning on buying a new iPod Photo. With my 3rd generation iPod, a dock connector was included in the package. Will this dock connector work with the new iPod Photo, or do I need to buy one of those "Universal Docks"?
I was looking in Apple Store, but couldn't find an answer there. Does anybody know?
    cheers,
    pj

    Hey,
I just picked up my new 5g iPod and I am using it with the dock connector from my 4g with now problems. It sets the ipod at just the right angle to watch movies as well as charging, sync, etc.

  • My iPad2 suddenly play no sound on speaker, but only on headphone, it always shows "Dock Connector" in iPod

as the tile said, I use my ipad as usual. no dock connector is installed.
but i found that "Dock Connector" is always displayed in iPod.
is that the problem of connector?
too bad, i don't even drop or bumb my ipad into hard surface. how come it play no sound with the internal speaker!?
    "Dock Connector?"
Brothers, please help , thanks alot !

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First, make sure everything is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Updating iPod's Software
See if either of these help the sound issue...
    Resetting iPod
    Restore the iPod
To delete photos, delete them from the folder the iPod is updating from. I have my photo library organized on my computer, and didn't want to change it for the iPod. So, I created a folder called "iPod Pics." Under the photo preferences for the iPod, I told iTunes to sync from there. I just put in and remove photos that I want for my iPod there. This way, I don't need to edit the My Pictures folder just for my iPod.

  • Seeking old iPod (with dock connector) advice

good morning people who are smarter than me. I have an older version which they are calling "iPod (with dock connector)" from 2005. its got a ton of music that i either uploaded or purchased and i would like to get it onto my laptop so i can put the music in my rad new iphone. however, the battery is such that the ipod wont work unless it is connected to a charge. unfortunately for me, it will not charge when hooked up to the computer (Dell - Vista (...i know).
any advice? do they still sell batteries for older ipods? is there some setting that i can change in itunes to make it charge my ancient ipod when hooked up to the computer?
    thanks.

I have a older 40 Gig Gen 2 classic (I guess they called them that) I bought it in 2004, and am on my 3rd battery. I had the same problem you described. I just got another one from laptopsforless.com and it cost me 5 bucks. .01 cent for the battery and 4.99 shipping, I got it in about a week. (I figured It was worth 5 bucks to take a chance on it) It works fine, but still do not get more than a few hours out it fully charged.

  • All audio works out of dock connector with Apple a/v cable, except for ipod audio.  I get no ipod audio.  Any ideas?

I have an iPhone 3gS (iOS 4.3.3) and an Apple AV cable.  This arrangement has worked in the past.  Now, I get NO iPod audio out of the dock connector/AV cable.  All other audio (movies/YouTube/etc.) works fine with the Apple AV cable...but, I get NO iPod audio.
Can anyone help me out with this issue?

I have tried videos from iTunes and my own conversions.
I managed to test my cables using a friends 30GB iPod and it worked just fine. I looked really good and I'm really looking forward to getting mine working.
It is definitely my iPod. Both the Apple AV Cable and the cheaper, longer Belkin AV iPod cable work fine with other iPods.
I will try firmware version 1.1.2 when I get home but I don't have high hopes. I will post the results for the silent masses yearning for an answer to the same problem.
Any tips on how to smoothly navigate Apple tech support and get my iPod fixed?

  • 10gb dock connector not configuring

I have a 10gb dock connector ipod and it will not configure to my computer. I have downloaded the latest software to my computer and I know that the USB and firewire points are working correctly.
Whenever I plug my ipod into the computer it is recognised as a storage device but will not configure when I install itunes or when I try to update it. An error message comes up saying 'can't mount ipod'.
Also the file symbol with the exclamation mark appears on my ipod itself but I can manage to put it into disk mode. I have tried the apple help with the five R's but I can't restore or reformat my ipod as the computer does not recognise it and it does not appear in itunes.
    Can anyone help please?

"Can't Mount" issues are typically drive letter conflicts in Windows. Find out what drive letter Windows has assigned to the iPod and, if necessary, change it to a different letter.
But it sounds like the iPod may need to be restored at some point.

  • My 3GS keeps switching between iPhone speaker and Dock connector and I don't know how to keep it on iPhone speaker

My 3GS keeps switching between iPhone speaker and Dock connector and I don't know how to keep it on iPhone speaker so I can listen to my music and games.  Is it hardware or software problem?

I was told by a friend that sometimes when you use a 3rd party charger that the connectors are not the same size and so it can affect the sensors in the phone and make it seem like it is in a docking station and so changes the output for dock speakers.  With that said, I didn't take my pohone in to be serviced at the appple store because it was a 3GS and over 2 years old and so not covered by any service plan.  Since then my phone is back to normal and I can use my headphones and listen with the speakers on the phone.  I stoped using the suspected cheap 3rd party charger and maybe that's what did it, but not sure if it was or wasn't the cause of my problem.  I'm glad that my phone is better I was kinda holding out for the Iphone 5 when i comes out later and hope my phone lasted until then.

  • Considering Purchasing a 160GB iPod Classic,  Dock Connector compatibility

While I'm an enthusiastic supporter of Apple (using Windows occasionally does that) I feel that I have to investigate in more detail before purchasing than I did in the past. (iMovie 08.)
I presently own a 5th generation iPod (iPod Video). All of our vehicles have a Belkin Auto Dock Connector that connects to the iPod audio and power.
    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=149006#
Under the dash the audio connects to an Aux input of the car radio. So this one connector allows the audio hook up to the cars radio and it also charges the iPod as well. I don't know all the details of the installation, it was done by a "high-end" (aren't they all?) car audio shop.
Does anyone have an opinion or actual knowledge as to the likelihood that the 160GB iPod Classic will work with this dock connector like my 5th Gen does?
    Thanks

Well, the camera connector is NOT working. Belkin TunesTalk Stereo microphone is NOT working, too. Griffin iTrip IS working. So, my opinion is, Apple would have made changes in the classic connection which makes 2/3 of my connectors worthless. I'm disappointed about that, especially that they didn't care about the use of their own cam.-connector.
Take your car, try to get a parking spot near your local dealer and find out. Of course, Apple's not responsible for other producer's products - but who handed out the specs of the connector? And who is giving up them?

  • Audio through headphones, dock connector randomly replaced with weak buzzing

Just had my iPhone 3GS (32GB) replaced under AppleCare. This new one, upon connecting an audio outptut device, will fail to actually output audio during iPod App playback or phone calls. There will be a faint "pop" upon connection, followed by a low buzzing with a pattern following the expected audio output (the music, the caller's voice, etc.). Nothing clears it up except removing/reconnecting the connected audio device a number of times - and that number is completely random. Rebooting the iPhone doesn't necessarily fix this, either.
It seemed to be a headphone jack / headset issue at first, but now I've also discovered the exact same issue with audio output through the dock connector, e.g. the iPod connector in my car, my iHome speaker dock.
Neither the built-in speaker nor Bluetooth streaming exhibit this issue.
I hesitate to take this back to the Apple Store, because it is so intermittent and impossible to reproduce at will.
What's happening? How can I at least zero in on this issue to get help from AppleCare (again...)?

The site name and layout changed. The lack of helpfulness stayed the same.

  • What is meant by dock connector?

I have a problem with external sound buttons on the side of the phone. They donot change the volume. I did everything but nothing works. The only time they work is right after the phone is connected to the bluetooth of the car and when I close the screen saying dock connector. The dock connector button appears when I press the buton on the phone twice then I scroll three times to the right where the sound adjusting button appears. After i leave the car the sound buttons stop working again. please help.

More then one, of "something". So if the "active" fails, then the "backup" can take over. Depending on exactly what we are talking about, then possibly both can be active at the same time,
sharing the load, and if one fails then the one remaining will do the full load itself.
Thing "something" can be a wide variety of things, since at power agg, disk, network connection, a whole server, a whole disk subsystem, etc. The details regarding architecture etc depends on exactly what
    this "something" is.

  • Stuck on "Dock Connector" Setting

My iTouch thinks that it's connected to the dock connector when it's not. So it won't allow headphones to work. I've tried resetting to no avail. Any ideas?

I have just come upon this problem, too.
However, it happened after I did a very specific thing to my 1st gen touch: i plugged in a fairly old Griffin iTrip to it - using the "old style" of dock connector before the iPhone and touch were released (circa 2007).
It immediately went into "dock connector" mode, and would not come out permanently. However, if I inserted headphones, it would temporarily recover and allow me to change the volume.
This is a poor work around, though.
I have not tried cleaning the port, yet, but this seems more like a compatibility issue than physical...
    Any other thoughts?
