30GB iPOD Capacity issue

I just recently purchased a 5G 30 GB. When I go to 'settings' and then to 'about' my capacity says 27.8 GB. Shouldn't the capacity be 30 GB? I'm wondering where the other 3 GB went.
Any ideas?
HP   Windows XP

This happens with all hard drives.
Here's why;
"In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."

  • Syncing and capacity issues - how do I fully delete certain iPod items?

Perhaps I just don't know how to properly delete files off my iPod. In short: Podcast items that I manually drag from iTunes to a playlist in my iPod don't seem to fully delete after I delete them from the playlist. And I don't see them listed in my ipod podcast area.
The bulk of my ipod consists of music I manually tossed on there. That portion never gets synced. And I haven't added new music in a long time.
I have three different podcasts programs I auto sync the last 3 episodes of (it was 5, but I reduced it due to the problem I'm describing in this post).
I also manually drag (via iTunes) some podcasts from my laptop to a playlist on the iPod. I do this once a week. The shows I move over aren't always the same, this is one reason I don't auto sync them. (i.e. I might decide to move over a really old episode of a program I rarely listen to.)
The podcasts I manually moved to the playlist seem to only show up in the playlist. They don't appear in the Podcast or Music sections.
Each week I also delete the contents of the playlist (by going into the playlist and deleting the listing of the playlist's contents).
*If I delete the (manually moved) item from the playlist then it appears that it doesn't free up the space*. Since I can't find any other mention of the item on the iPod, how do I delete it?
I'm aware that if I drag an item from iTunes to the iPod's podcast section, then a entry for the item shows up there. And then I can delete the item and get that space back. Maybe this is the proper way to move files and perhaps I'll start doing that. But at this point I just want to fully delete all the old items I can't see anymore.
Because of this problem I've had to delete more and more other items from my iPod to free up space for the new podcasts I want to manually move over. I'm getting tired of doing this. Thus, this post.
If need be I can provide examples of the exact steps I take, space left, etc.
Using iTunes 10.1.2. I've read some threads in the past about capacity issues that started cropping up in 10 or so. I don't know if my problems are related.
    Thanks,

Note: by using a third-party iPod file browser, I'm able to easily see all the hidden podcasts (they add up to many many megabytes). However, the one I'm currently using, Senuti (free version) doesn't seem to allow track deletion from its browser, it just lets me transfer from the browser to iTunes.
Is there a (free?) file browser that will let me delete tracks?
Also, I haven't examined all of the hidden tracks, but for two of the podcasts shows, it looks like the oldest hidden ones were added on 6/19/2010. iTunes 9.2 released on 6/16/2010 and I likely installed it around that time.

  • Earlier Issue with 30Gb Ipod Video

Hey, I have a 5th generation 30Gb Ipod video. I recently went out and bought a new 2.0 USB port for a PCI slot for my Ipod since I only had a 1.1 before that.
Well my problem is, I had it plugged in last night and it had the do not disconnect screen on the ipod for about an hour, so I pulled it out without ejecting it, and later on it said that windows said that the device was not able to be identified and was malfunction try unplugging it and plugging it back in, I did that and it still would work, so I restarted my PC and got it to work, then about a hour later I was uploading some photos and it gave me the same message, so I just turned off my PC and went to bed as it was getting late.
This morning when I woke up I thought maybe it was just the port so I unplugged and plugged it back into a different 2.0 port since I got 4 with that card I bought, I then left for school and came back to find that my Ipod is working like nothing happened since I changed it's port.
I just want to know if I should pull out that warrenty card and get a new one or if that message was just because the one port could recognize something was there, but not able to tell what device it is.

  • 30GB iPod Video battery Issue?

I have noticed a problem with my 30GB iPod Video recently. I've had it for about 1 and a half years now with no problems until now.
I think the battery may be on its last legs as it seems to discharge a lot sooner than it used to (i.e. fully charged Monday, by Wednesday its displaying "very low bat warning" upon sync - and that's with hardly any use!). Even on the Apple Support site (here:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60970) there's a page stating that it should take up to 2 weeks to discharge! This has happened the last 3 times i've synced and charged it!
Is this a sign that the battery is on its way to battery heaven (or ****)?

The symptoms do match a bad battery. Also, from what I've seen on the forum, a year-and-a-half is about normal (obviously depending on usage).

  • IPad freezing after IOS4.2 - capacity issue?

I had roughly 1GB of available capacity on my 16GB iPad BEFORE installing the 4.2 update. I had a large photo library, mainly photos downloaded directly to the iPad from a digital camera, ie not synced to the iPad from my iMac via iTunes/iPhoto.
Anyone else have these general conditions prior to the install/update? I suspect that the low capacity may play a role here...

My iPad froze on update. I had to eventually kill iTunes (not responding, and not responding to a normal Quit from Activity Monitor). I believe it did not manage to complete the backup cycle. I had to reset my iPad. After about two hours of showing an Apple and an unmoving progress bar, my iPad started working again.
I suspect several things. I had very little disk space left on my Mac mini (~20GB). The Backup folder for my iPad and iPhone exceeded 30GB. Individual backups for iPad were over 13GB. I also had about 5 GB of photos from my camera on my iPad, put there with the camera connector. I suspect that was implicated also, and intend to remove them. However I did have a fair amount of space left on my 64 GB iPad.
Over the next evening I will correct all the capacity issues I can see, and resync my iPad. At the moment, the Video app and the iPod app claim they are cancelling sync, and are not able to be used. iPhoto took a fair while to update photos.I suspect I will find other apps in the same state.

  • 30GB iPod only registers as a 15.9GB iPod?

I updated my wife's 30GB iPod today to v1.2.3. That crashed it hard. I couldn't get the unit to respond after iTunes suggested "restoring" the unit. All it would do is bring up the Apple graphic and then reset. After getting it into disk mode and restoring it several times, it appears to be working now except it is now a 15.9GB capacity drive!! How can I reformat it to 30GB like it should be?

If your iPod is recognized in "my computer", changing the drive letter can sometimes resolve this apparent wrong capacity issue.
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

  • Multiple 160 GB iPod Classic issues

Last August, I purchased a 160GB iPod Classic. For the first several months, it worked just fine. I hooked it up with the audio cable and it would play in my Hyundai Tucson. One day in the Spring, the volume stopped working in the vehicle. I tried other cables and reset the device several times. It started to work again. About a week later, nothing. It wouldn't even have sound when hooked up to headphones.
I took it the Apple store and we tried it out in a vehicle of one of the associates, it worked. Took it home, down again. Had it replaced. Tried it all different wasy, bought a new audio cable for the car, headphones, etc. NOTHING. Had it replaced last Saturday for the second time. Used it everywhere but the car and it worked. Yesterday, I put headphones on and it crash. (Did not try in car yet).
My questions are these: I have a 30GB Classic that has the same library on it. Could there be something wrong with the library? Corrupt? Could the vehicle need a certain something installed? My dealership knows nothing. I've searched online forums for the issue (thinking maybe it was the car). But this one didn't even go in the car and it crashed after a full charged and library sync.
In case it matters, I have a MacBook Pro 13inch using the most updated iTunes and software.
    If anyone can help-Thank you!

Also, I am using my older 30GB iPod classic and it works fine with all outlets, headphones, vehicle, etc.

  • 30GB iPod Video Prevents ASUS A7N8X-X Mobo from Completing POST

    Greetings,
I've owned my iPod for about a week now, but it seems to have a little bit of an issue with nForce 2 based ASUS A7N8X-X motherboards, specifically in regards to the fact that if the iPod is connected to the PC during boot, the motherboard will not complete its POST and the boot is aborted. Where the POST aborts isn't consistent, but the majority of the time, it will abort on or before the CPU diagnostic. If I disconnect the iPod and then reset the system, the motherboard completes its POST as it normally would.
I was wondering if there were any other users who have experienced this. I have the current generation 30GB iPod Video and I'm using the dock cable that was included in the package.
    Thanks.

    Anything to do with this?

  • 30GB - Wrong Capacity, only 15,9 GB available

    Hello there,
I purchased a 30GB iPod 5 days ago. The Capacity of the iPod shown under "about" - "capacity" is only 15.9 GB. I tried to restore with Software Version 1.1 for several times, the capacity is still 15.9 GB. It should be 27.X GB, shouldn't it?
Has anyone here got the same problem or is anyone here who can help me?
Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language
    ferris

Thank's for your reply. I'm not alone
I think it will be better to substitute my iPod with a new one. I'll contact my distributor tomorrow 'cause I don't think that there is a solution to this problem. I think this is a case of guarantee, so that it will not make any problems.
@sonic: Did you contact your distributor yet?

  • 30GB iPod the ipod wont turn on and shows sad face?

I recently got a 30GB iPod off a friend after helping him move. He had not used it in awhile. It was just in a drawer. It will not turn on unless unless you plug it into the computer and it shows the iPod sad face. I guess from what he told me, he ran out of the Applecare and was told that it was a virus and had to be taken to an Apple Store to be restored. He never did because he got a 80GB for a gift.
Does this sound like a Battery issue or a Hardware issue? I have not done anything to it yet, I've been busy. But was told the battery was great on it, so I'm thinking it's more hardware so I can just throw it into disk mode and restore it.
    Thanks

    Hello flatlined1,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
A sad face icon on your iPod is usually a sign of a hardware issue more than likely with the hard drive itself.

  • Would a 30GB iPod Classic fit in a case for an 80GB-160GB iPod Classic?

I gave my daughter my old iPod 30GB.  She wants a case for it.  I found some cases on a site, but they say they are for 80-160GB classic iPods.  Would her 30GB fit in one of those cases?

There were several 30GB iPods, from 3rd gen to 5th gen.  Is this a "video" iPod (5th gen)?
If it's 3rd or 4th gen, it will definitely NOT fit.  If it's 5th gen, it probably will not fit, unless (maybe) it is really rubbery and flexible, or loose fitting.  The top edges on the new iPod "classic" are more rounded compared to the 5th gen iPod, although the overall dimensions are similar.
There seem to be a lot listings on eBay, if it's 5th gen.  Do a search on "ipod classic 5th gen case."  Pretty cheap, because they are old products.  NOTE:  There were two "thicknesses" for iPod 5th gen, depending on capacity of the hard drive.  30GB is the thinner type (for a 5th gen).  If the case is a hard shell, be sure you get the correct match.

  • Frozen 30gb Ipod

Can Anybody help me! My 30gb ipod is frozen with a white screen and I can get the screen to turn off even when i reset it. The screen comes back on in the white mode and will not turn off !!!!!!! please help me

  • 30GB iPod won't connect to iTunes applications and is now frozen

So I'm nearly useless on a computer and I recently received a 30GB iPod for Christmas. It had been running fine until about two days ago when I had my computer updated and installed a 200GB hard drive keeping my older hard drive as a slave.
Once I did that and transferred my iTunes to the active hard drive I couldn't get my iPod to work anymore.
It no longer shows up in iTunes and the iPod updater doesn't even recognize it. It only shows up as an external hard drive under "my computer" heading. I've tried resetting it and it still doesn't work. I'm currently removing all of my iTunes files and reinstalling the whole lot in hopes that it may help fix the problem.
Unfortunately now my iPod has frozen up and when I start it they only display is the title “disk mode”, a check mark and the “ok to disconnect” dialogue. And none of the buttons are responding so I can’t reset it.
Has anyone else encountered this or have any advice on what to do?

I have a somewhat similar issue.
I cannot connect my 30GB video iPod to iTunes. The iPod plays my song files; however, when I connect the USB cable to my iPod the 'do not disconnect' image appears; furthermore, the iPod doesn't show up on the 'source panel' of iTunes.
I still haven't figured out how to fix it.

  • Ipod Capacity different?

Hi. Mine is a 4gb Mini ipod however in itunes its total capacity is 3.77gb?
I have 3.63gb of music, 21.6mb of "other" but only 114mb of free space. Anyone know how I can get my 0.23gb of space back?
    Hopefully I'm not too confusing

Mine is a 4gb Mini ipod however in itunes its total capacity is 3.77gb?
As a general rule, the actual reported capacity of a hard drive is about 7% less than the advertised capacity.
The discrepancy you are noticing is due to the differences in the way that hard drive manufacturers calculate disk capacity and how it is reported by the operating system.
HD manufacturers use a decimal measurement to calculate disk capacity. They consider a gigabyte (GB) to be 1 billion bytes.
The decimal measurement would be 1000 x 1000 x 1000 which equals 1,000,000,000 bytes. For example, an 80GB hard drive means that the disk has an unformatted capacity of 80 billion bytes. (80,000,000,000 bytes.)
Since computers "speak" binary, not decimal... the operating system calculates a gigbyte (GB) differently.
    The binary measurement would be 1024 x 1024 x 1024 which equals 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Using the example above, an 80GB hard drive would be reported by the operating system as 74.5GB.
    80,0000,0000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 74.5GB
    1GB iPod = 930MB
    2GB iPod = 1.8GB
    4GB iPod = 3.7GB
    20GB iPod = 18.6GB
    30GB iPod = 27.9GB
    40GB iPod = 37.2GB
    60GB iPod = 55.9GB
Since the iPod operating system and extras also take up some space, you will be left with slightly less that the above stated capacity for your content.
Apple also explains the above in this article:
How much content will fit on my iPod?

  • Only certain purchased videos locking up 30GB iPod video

What causes certain videos to lock up my 30GB iPod video, but not others? All the videos I have are either purchased or free podcast downloads; All from iTunes.
I transfer the files all the same way to my iPod, by clicking and dragging the file to my iPod in iTunes.
Some play all the way through without an issue.
Some start at the beginning and then lock up after 10 or 15 seconds and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
Others start playing right in the middle of the video and then after playing for about 10 or 15 second, it locks up and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
I performed the 5 R's, no luck. I checked out and compared the file properties between one of the files that plays and one of the ones that don't. They're identical.
I'm bummed because I'm paying for videos that I have to watch on my PC, not on my iPod. So what might be causing this problem?
HP 1.9GHz Intel Pentium 4   Windows XP   30GB iPod video with software version 1.2 and iTunes version 7.0.1

I have the same problem; at least there's more than one out there. One of the videos I downloaded eventually began to work (I'm not sure why) but it kept freezing up and the audio had horrible static. (When I played it on the computer through the ipod, it worked fine.)
I cannot find an article on this site that explains what to do about that problem and apparently you can't simply send an email to a tech support center to ask about it. I guess I'll have to bring it to a store...
