30GB Ipod skipping/freezing

My 30Gb ipod is having a meltdown. It's decided that it doesn't want to play songs anymore. It can get 10seconds into a song then it starts to freeze up have trouble then skip to the next song and do the same thing. Sometimes it will get half way through a song before it does it or if i'm lucky it will actually play a whole song. I'm not sure how to fix this I'm thinking about doing a restore to factory settings. I did this last year when I had a different but equally serious problem. But I want to see if I can get more information before doing this as it's a last resort.

Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
1. A window based PC
2. A Mac computer
3. An USB iPod cable
4. A Firewire iPod cable
5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
How to reset iPod
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
Putting iPod into disk mode
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

I noticed the problem a few days ago.
-My iPod randomly freezes for about 5 seconds at a time.
-It skips songs sometimes (I will select a song from the library to play, and it will go on to the next one before playing the song i chose, if i try to play that song again, it works.)

    Hey there,
Restoring the ipod seems like a good idea at this point. I would try putting the ipod into [Disk Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363], and then connecting it to the computer to restore again.
Otherwise, maybe try completing reformatting the ipod through windows. Instructions for this process can be found below.

  • 30gb iPod Video freezes

Could someone please help me, or tell me if this is 'normal'?
I bought a 30bg iPod Video about 10 days ago. I installed the software on my computer...reset the iPod when I first plugged it in. Loaded up about 750 songs and about 35 pics.
The thing is, EVERYTIME I go running (basically every time I use it) it freezes. The play icon is still on the screen, but the song is not playing. Sometimes it happens in the middle of the song, sometimes before the song starts. (By the way, I always have the iPod on shuffle...does this make a difference?)
Saturdat morning, I had to reset it 3 times!!!!
The battery seems to run down fairly quickly, as well.
Have I done something wrong, or did I get a bad unit.
    Help!

So what the support guy says is fairly true. The video has a hard drive and a small RAM buffer. The nano is all RAM. Hard drive's don't like being moved around and if the video is reading the hard drive at the time, it's going to skip and potentially freeze.
See iPod : Maximizing skip protection
and Troubleshooting songs that skip on iPod
So if you're using a playlist with any videos on it, that's really bad (cause videos eat up a lot of the RAm buffer).
But if you have long songs that can aggravate the situation too.
Best option is to get a nano or a shuffle if you want to run. If you want to try staying with the video and run, position it somewhere that minimizes motion (a fanny back or belt clip may help) or higher up on the arm for an armband.
Oh, I just read your bit about having it on shuffle - yes that is bad. When it's not on shuffle it will read as much o the playlist as it can into RAM. When it's on shuffle, it doesn't know what the next songs are going to be. Even with shuffle off, manually changing songs repeatedly can have a similar effect. Just build a playlist you like and run with it.

  • Skipping/Freezing iPods- possible fix

For the last few months my 3G 30gb iPod would just all of a sudden skip all of the songs on the playlist and then turn off. To fix it, i'd have to reset it, which didn't really help. Since then i've tried restoring it with the latest firmware. It's only seemed to get worse. Yesterday it was freezing or hanging for awhile. and i know many of you are having similar issues...
i'm hoping this won't jynx my luck but i wanted to share this with everyone anyway. i restored my ipod back to the 7-15-2004 version of the firmware (the oldest i had). ever since it seems to be a little quicker and i have experienced no skipping/freezing problems yet. i'm crossing my fingers.
if this works, maybe i'll drop it a couple times so it works like it used to.

  • Volume control problem with 30GB iPod 3G, Universal Dock, and Apple Remote

I just hooked up my 30GB iPod 3G to the Universal Doc and tried the my new Apple remote. The only buttons on the remote that work in controlling my iPod while on the dock are the play/pause and the skip forward and back buttons.
For some reason the volume up and down buttons don't adjust the volume on my iPod while it's on the dock. Any ideas? Shouldn't the volume up and down work? Or do they only work on the newer iPods?
    Any info appreciated.

    btabz,
Thanks for your response. No the iPod doesn't respond at all--the volume display doesn't come up or change.
When I press the play/pause or either skip forward or back on the remote, the iPod, while on the dock, lights up and responds to the command as it should. But when I press volume up or down on the remote the iPod does not respond at all.
According to Apple's store info on the remote, the volume up/down controls should work. I am wondering if maybe it doesn't work with the 3Gs for some reason. But if that is the case, Apple should indicate that. It is kind of frustrating to not be able to adjust the volume.
    Thanks,

  • Skipping/freezing - hard drive woes

Hi all. For several months I've been having a problem with my iPod, and after searching these forums I think I'm not alone. Here are the details:
    1. During some tracks, the iPod will freeze, the hard drive spins up, and suddenly it jumps to the next track. It always happens at the same point in the same tracks, until I reload the iPod with new music and/or do a restore. At this point, there will be freezing/skipping in different tracks.
    2. There is no problem with the files themselves -- they play in iTunes and as I mentioned above, the "skipping" happens in different tracks after I reload the iPod. This is unbelievably frustrating when the skips end up in the middle of an audiobook track...
    3. Thinking that this was a problem with the hard drive itself (bad sectors or something) I've tried using the iPod Software Restore application, but it doesn't seem to be able to reformat the drive. According to what I've read here and on the 'net, it might not be a good idea to use Disk Utility to reformat the drive, although I'm considering it.
    4. I put the iPod into Diagnostic Mode and ran the HDD Scan. Here is the output:
    HDD SCAN
    END SCAN.
    112
    RD FAIL
    SCAN NG
So, anybody know how to interpret this? Any suggestions from the tech folks on how to get the drive software to ignore the bad sectors?

  • Ipod Keeps freezing when hooking up to macbook

It seems like everytime I try to sync my 30gb ipod video to my new macbook it freezes up. Software is all up to date for ipod and macbook. I'm getting tired of reseting my ipod. Never had this problem before with my ipod mini and my crappy pc laptop. Anyone have any suggestions?

Its the new cable that came with my new Ipod. It will eventually sync but I have to reset it at least one time. Usually works after that. Its just annoying I have to reset it. I have no clue why its doing this. just started like a month ago and the ipods only 3 months old.

  • Ipod skips last parts of some songs

I recently upgraded to iTunes 7.0.2 from 7.0.1 for windows. On certain songs I play on my iPod, the last few seconds, or even about 20 - 30 seconds will not play. The iPod will freeze and then the remaining time of the song will skip straight from 20 - 30 seconds to about 1 or 2, then pauses and the next song in the playlist starts. I have played these affected files in iTunes and the song plays to completion. Also, the tracks are not checked as part of a gapless album and the start and finish times are also not checked. Please advise me on what to do as it is getting very frustrating. I have tried resetting the iPod, and also restoring it and syncing my entire library twice. I do not want to do this again as it takes hours as my library is quite large!

I have the same problem on my shuffle and my 60gb iPod. It skips on song, pauses in the middle of videos, tv shows and movies. I returned to Apple, but they found no problem. I have restored both iPod and NOTHING!!! I wish someone would find out how to fix this. It is driving me completely nuts!!!!

  • Ipod *totally* freezes while jogging

Hey, so I am having a big problem with my iPod. Basically, I usually run with my iPod inside at the gym, and when I do so I rest the iPod on a ledge on the treadmill that I run on. However, recently I've gone out running a few times because I decided that I want more scenery when I run, and after I'd done that a few times the iPod started freezing at random times.
When I say freezing, I don't mean temporarily freezing. I mean freezing that literally nothing other than resetting the device by holding down the menu and center buttons can fix.
What could be going on? My guess is that it is either because the device gets too cold while I'm outside (it was down to about 40 or 35 one of these times), or because the device can't handle the bouncing up and down. But I have *NEVER* had this problem in any other context, like walking. And if it skips, shouldn't it at least remain responsive to the buttons?
Another piece of information that might be useful is that when I do reset it, the battery initially displays as very low when it starts up and then gradually gets higher.
Also, this has happened both in between songs and during them.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Stephen.
I have been having the same problem with my 30G 5G IPod when jogging. To begin with the IPod would freeze until i pulled it out of my back pocket and kept it fairly level in my hand whilst jogging. However, the other night when the IPod froze i brought it out of my pocket keeping it fairly level thinking that the song will continue playing, but the devise was frozen. It would not respond when pressing any of the buttons. As a result i was forced to reset.
The thing that I am most worried about is the fact that the IPod had been skipping more frequently each time i have been jogging up until the point where it completely froze last night, and i wondered if I was causing damage to the IPod.
I don't think the freezing problem is a result of the IPod becoming too cold as I reside in Australia and it is summer down here at the moment and I have been jogging in temperatures around the 30 degrees C/ 86 degrees F.
I was also wondering if there was any way to prevent the IPod from bouncing around in my back pocket (which i feel is the cause of the skipping/freezing). Are ther any other ways to carry your IPod when jogging? Do aftermarket silicon cases help to lessen the bouncing effect?

  • IPod is freezing..

Can anybody help me with my iPod problem please...
Just a little background, my iPod is 2 years old-
I bought it in September of 2004.
Its the click wheel with black and white screen, 20 GB.
I've heard that the iPod battery only lasts about one year,
but so far I haven't had any problem.
I use my iPod more for disk drive purposes
    than for listening to music..
    Ok, now here's the problem.
I was uploading some 700MB TV episodes I downloaded,
a couple of them at the same time..
and for some reason an error occured.
From that point on, one of the 700MB files would not erase
    from the iPod forever..
I just ignored that problem and kept using it-
it worked fine uploading and downloading other stuff
although there was always that uneraseable file.
(The file was just there.. i couldn't play it, i couldn't erase it, etc.)
And then one day, my computer began freezing..
It would show up in iTunes but not as a disk drive..
If it did show up as a disk drive and I tried to go into
it from My Computer, the whole computer would freeze up.
The iPod also just skipped to the next track by itself
while I was listening to music.
Because I got frustrated, I left alone the iPod for a
couple of days.. and then I tried to plug it in the USB.
Now it wouldn't show up in iTunes nor as a disk drive.
While I was looking at the troubleshoot section,
I tried resetting (which basically didn't do anything because i didn't have any personal setting in my iPod),
and I also tried putting it to disk mode,
which looked like it was working..
but then the iPod would freeze up if I put it to disk mode.
it would freeze up in the "Do not disconnect" screen until
    I do the reset steps.
I tried to update it using the lastest iPod updater,
but it would say "can't mount the iPod" or freeze the computer. Sometimes the program itself will freeze in the "initializing" stage, while the computer can't even recignize my iPod.
    What's wrong?
Thanks for reading this long message.
    Please solve my problem-
Do I need to take it to the iPod store?

    Hello,
As I read your post, the main thing that was coming to my mind for each of the issues was restore your iPod.
Even though you are having the "can't mount iPod" issue (because you need the Updater to restore your iPod), try this (though you might have done a combination of steps like this already):
Eject your iPod from computer (for now).
    Close Updater and iTunes programs.
    Restart the computer.
Put your iPod into disk mode.
Connect your iPod to your computer.
See if your Updater works for your iPod.
This is to get your iPod to be recognized by the Updater, then we can restore it. Now here's something I most recommend doing:
The "Can't mount iPod" issue is a fairly strong indicator that your iPod's hard drive is somehow out of place (it might be a connection issue still, but I tend to doubt that). Try this:
Tap your iPod firmly on either side of it several times with your hand. This may work for you to tap your iPod's hard drive back into place.
    I hope this helps you!

  • Why my ipod keep freezing

why my ipod keep freezing  all the time

I had this problem with my old 20GB classic ipod, it all started when I began using my ipod for my running trainings, every day it used to get worse freezing every 10 minutos or so, then I got ****** and bought a new 80GB classic Ipod, I have it for about 3 weeks now and guess what? It started freezing or skiping songs also. I did a test where I synced the same library on my both ipod and the songs being skipped on my new one wasnt being skipped on the old one, so its a problem with the song, then I though it could be any damage in the ipod HD but my new ipod has no reason to be damaged, the only impact that it might have recived is from my running trainings, but the impacts are really weak. Other test I did was trying to remove the song being skiped from the ipod, everytime I did that my ipod couldnt be ejcted, it kept showing me the following message "The ipod canot be ejcted because it contains files that are used by another aplication." I had to unplug my ipod without ejecting it.

  • IPod skips through all songs and isn't properly recognized in iTunes

I have 30gb iPod video and it skips through all the songs and then goes back to the menu. Occasionally I can get it to stop skipping through and play part of one song. I have reset it several times. Also, when I plug it in to the computer it appears in iTunes as the name of my iPod Nano. I really don't want to lose all the songs on my iPod because it was my sister's iPod and she recently passed away. Most of the songs on here she put on and I don't want to lose those songs... Is there a way I can get the songs off my iPod onto my computer and then restore the iPod? Or is there a good way I can fix the problem?

i'll have a go at this one:
Also, when I plug it in to the computer it appears in iTunes as the name of my iPod Nano.
that can be caused by a Windows drive letter confusion. are the techniques from this document of any help with that?
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
