30gb video ipod - capacity paradox

Hello,
I've recently bought the fith generation 30gb video ipod. It's working fine apart from a possible capacity paradox...
In the ipod section in itunes the full capacity reads 27.86GB. The capacity meter reads as follows...
Audio 9.44GB
Video 17.7MB
Photos 209.6MB
Free Space 26.44GB
If you add them all up the total is way above the possible full capacity available???
Anyone experiencing the same thing?
G4 + Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi there. The same thing started happening to my 60GB iPod just today. Maximum capacity is supposed to be 55.68GB and as of yesterday I had about 2GB of free space left.
When I plugged it in today I noticed a bit of a change on the bar below where it shows me what occupies what space.
Audio: 33.63
Video: 23.13
Photos: 472.7
Free Space: 18.98
It obviously doesn't add up to 55.68. At first I thought maybe stuff was missing from my iPod but I unplugged it and everything was there. I plugged it back in and it still said the same thing.
I then tried to sync more stuff with my iPod, like tv shows and music videos and they all seem to fit, even though I know that at least one of the shows is near 2GB of space, and all the shows I added should be around 5GB.
Should I be freaking out? Is this a bad thing? Should I reset it?

I went to the Apple shop and they said it is now vintage and they can't fix my baby they offered me 10% to trade her in for a new model...
what else can I try to save her?  I've tried cleaning and wiggling and restoring. Everything looks and feels ok.

  • Video Files Not Showing Up On 30GB Video iPod

I bought a few television show episodes directly from iTunes, but my 30GB Video iPod is not recognizing the files. They show up, as well as play, in iTunes, but they aren't shown in the "Video" section of my iPod.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the ipod connected, in itunes, goto edit>preferences>ipod tab>Video sub tab and set it to update videos you want "AUto update ALL" or "AUto update SELECT"

  • 30gb video ipod need help putting videos on it!!!

yea i just got a 30gb video ipod for my b-day and i have home videos that i want on the ipod but i dont know how...can yea guys help me out????

If the videos are already in one of the compatible formats, drag them into the iTunes library and then use these instructions to send them to the iPod. If not, use an application such as this one to convert the videos, and then proceed as above.

  • 30GB Video iPod quirks...

I have been having some odd issues with my new 30GB Video ipod. First, it sometimes doesnt want to unmount. I have to turn off most software and log out of other open accounts before it may (or may not) work. Second, I was playing music on it today and noticed that while they showed up in the playlists, the name of the songs as they played were blank. It showed the album art, but nothing else. Oh, and the icon for a video was in the upper right of the screen...weird! I restored it and now it seems fine, but I'm not sure if anyone else is having similar quirks. Anyone?.........Bueller?......Bueller?

  • 30gb video iPod is playing songs out of order.

I have a 30gb Video iPod (4 or 5 years old).  It has suddenly started playing album tracks in the wrong order.  When I look at the album track listing, the songs are the correct order, but it won't play them that way.  It's always in a different, arbitrary order.  Please help!  Thanks in advance.

First, try doing a Reset to restart the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If that does not help, and this problem only affects ONE album, and this album's songs are seen as having the correct Track # information in iTunes, what I would do is delete just this album from the iPod.  Then, add it back.  If there is some corrupted data on the iPod related to the album's song order, this should fix it.
If it's happened to all albums (or many albums) on the iPod, I would do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  Select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  Click the Restore button.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.

  • ITunes freezes when trying to add songs to 30GB video iPod

    Here's my situation exactly:
I just bought a 30GB Video iPod with some songs and videos already uploaded onto it. After much reading, I found out how to get the songs from the iPod onto my computer so I could put them into my iTunes library. I added some songs and videos of my own to my iTunes library and tried to update my iPod. The iTunes program says do not disconnect-- updating iPod but my iPod doesn't say anything. The funny thing is that the actual iPod says do not disconnect until I open iTunes and try updating it, then the do not disconnect msg goes away on the iPod. I left my computer on for about 12+ hours straight while iTunes said Do not disconnect.. woke up the next morning and iTunes was frozen-- no new songs on the iPod. What could the issue be exactly? I have slight issues with my usb ports-- for example; sometimes they do not recognize things plugged into them (memory sticks, printers)... BUT it does recognize my iPod-- it shows up in my computer as a removeable disk drive or something, plus as soon as I plug it in the iPod says do not disconnect. I definitely need help though... I'm dying to put some songs of my own on this thing.
Things I have tried so far:
Deleting and installing iTunes and everything else again
Restarting computer and iPod-- of course
Tried plugging it into diff. usb ports

I'm assuming the usb hardware problem may be a good possibility because I've always had problems with my usb ports. I can't get a printer to work or those Scandisk things. My assumption is perhaps u can take files from things plugged into the usb ports but you can't add files/etc to things plugged into the usb ports. I will still attempt what you told me to do. I just don't want to lose what I currently have on my iPod and be stuck with a blank iPod because I use it quite often. Maybe a new computer should be my next purchase? Thanks so much!

  • 30GB Video Ipod must restore, but cant due to error 1418

So I was listening to my ipod yesterday and it was fine. I picked a new song, and it started to skip songs rapidly. It all of a sudden messed and now it says I need to restore it. I plugged my ipod into my itunes (which is completly up to date) and itunes says
"iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
Disconnecting and reconnecting gave me the same thing, so I clicked restore. Since I'm on a mac, i typed in the correct user name and password. Then I get the error
"The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418)"
and when I click Ok, the iPod screen goes away and I'm left with an iPod that needs to be restored. I've repeated the steps many times and the same messages come up over and over and over. What can I do here?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    weeman,
i'm a pc user and i'm having the same problem with my 30gb video ipod (5th generation). the latest version of itunes cannot restore my ipod to its original setting because of a corrupted file. tell me this, when you turn on your ipod, does the apple logo appears followed by a message in four different languages saying that you need to connect your ipod to a computer and use itunes to restore. my ipod displays no colors at all. i've searched everywhere in the apple website and there are no solutions and my computer couldn't even format it.

  • 30Gb Video Ipod - trying to use Itrip

I bought my husband a 30Gb video Ipod for graduation from the Apple store. Then, for Christmas I bought him an Itrip from Target. I assumed it would work fine, but it says it needs an Ipod (with dock connector). Is there a way to buy a dock connector or retrofit his Ipod? I don't remember seeing the option of a 30Gb video WITH dock connector when I purchased it on-line at the Apple store. I thought I was buying the best/newest with everything....what do you recommend I do? Thanks, Jenny

    hi Jenny,
the 5th generation iPod with video does have a dock connector. the only iPod that doesn't is the iPod shuffle. so the griffin iTrip with dock connector is compatible with your 30GB iPod. the dock connector is the same slot used to plug the USB cable into(at the bottom of the iPod). early models of the iTrip plugged into the headphone jack and expansion slot(at the top of older models).
all you need to do is plug the iTrip into the bottom of the iPod(the long skinny rectangular hole). consult your manual if you need further detail.

  • 30GB Video iPod

I just purchased a 30GB Video iPod. I ripped a DVD to MP4 format and when i try to drag the file to iTunes 7, nothing happens. I also try to click file>Add to Library...> The movie still does not go onto my iPod. The only way I can do this is go into the Movies tab on iTunes and click Sync movies and select the movie i want to sync, then i can watch it on the iPod. Is this the way it's supposed to work?
Also, when i watch the movie on the iPod, the movie seems to have a little bit of a lag while playing. Is this normal?

I actually found what the issue was. I was using imtoo dvd to iPod software, this isn't that great to use. I also tried to use Handbrake Lite and it still made the movie stutter. I used the full blown version of HandBrake and now the movies work perfect with no stutters.

  • 30gb video ipod problems - A LOT!!

Imagine my pleasure at receiving a 5th Gen 30gb video ipod for Christmas?
The i Pod has been updated to 1.2.1.
I have installed the latest i Tunes 7.0.2
    Picture my annoyance when:
The ipod will not be recognised with my computer.
In the brief moments that it connects with i Tunes 7.0.2, the icon in iT disappears from trace then reappears then disappears. Etc
The ipod says Do Not Disconnect then allows disconnection.
It says that my USB 2.0 ports would speed up transfer if they were USB 2.0!!!!! What gives there?
I have found that any body who has posted onto this forum with problems with there 5th Gen 30gb video ipod, I have been there/am there!!
      Windows XP Pro

    Thanks for replying.
I can confirm that my USB ports are 2.0.
My biggest issue is that "according to the manual" the i-pod will automatically be recognised to i-Tunes when plugged in. I do receive notification that a connection is being made (noise and new window with 3 folders, "Do Not Disconnect" etc) then it drops out then comes back again before dropping out again, and so on!!!
Any help would be gratfully received

  • IPod Updater 2006-06-28 killed 2GB Nano and a 30GB Video iPod

Both were bought in december 2005, I was impressed as they both have worked totally perfect until Monday, plugged fully charged hardley used 30GB Video into front USB on a G5 1.6, iTunes booted and a box appeared saying iPod needed update, so I clicked ok, it then said update was succesful. iPod rebooted, Mac an iTunes no longer recognised the iPod? so I did a reset, this sorted the problem and it seemed to work fine. My daughter then wanted to plug in her Nano, so she did, I unplugged the 30GB as it was fully charged and turned it off , plugged in the nano an thought it was ok to also update, the update worked fine and rebooted straight onto the desktop an also in iTunes, we left it to recharge fully before ejecting an turning off. I then plugged the 30GB back into USB, Mac/iTunes would not recognise again? Tried to complete the 5Rs managed the first 4 but as I could not mount the iPod, I could not Restore! Tried on Powerbook, nothing apart from no charge icon! but it would no longer charge and was totally flat without any use? plugged it in to wall charger for 3 hrs, would turn on but straight away said that the iPod needed charging? Then my daughter said she could not turn Nano on, this is now totally and completely dead? nothing at all happens even when plugged into wall socket? this is too much to be a coincidence, it must be the update that has somehow fried the batteries? they are both still under warrenty so I have ordered support online and Im waiting for my boxes, but I just would like to know if anyone else out there has had simular problems? or if anyone can shine any light or information about this? I have been a total Machead for 16 years but this has just cast a shadow on my experience! :-|

I too have had almost the identical problem. I did the update and the next time I plugged the Ipod in a lot of my library was missing and I received a corrupt database error message. I have tried everything conceivable to restore my Ipod video 30 GB but It keeps locking up. I occasionally will get it to boot up but it will only stay on for a maximum of about 3 minutes and then locks up. I have tried the 5R's and tried putting it in disk mode. I have tried the diagnostic mode which also locks up. Most of the time I get a message after resetting the ipod that I need to restore using iTunes and then it shuts off. The only way I can turn on the thing in the first place is by doing a reset. I think Apple has some explaining to do. I have seen quite a few posts of the same problem which seems to be attributed to the update. I suppose that I will be sending mine in for service. Probably would be a good idea to call customer service first, even though they probably will charge me for the call.

  • ITunes / 5G 30GB Video iPod / Senuti Questions

I recently got a MacBook Pro and I want to have my iTunes library exclusively on my MBP. I already transferred all of my songs onto the MBP using Senuti; however I was wondering if there is any way to retain Play Counts and Ratings?
Also, I have the original 5G Video iPod (not the "5.5 Revision"), and I was wondering if there is anyway I can add the search function to it.
    Thanks

"Does anybody know anything about transferring while retaining play counts and ratings?"
I suspect that the problem is that we don't know "Senuti." Personally, I would have transferred the library differently but that's not the issue now.

  • Charging 30gb video ipod

right, the new video ipods don't come with a charger for plug sockets, you just have to charge it by connecting it to your computer. but does anyone know if i can buy a regular ipod plug socket charger and use it to charge my ipod? will it work or are they not compatible with the new ipods?
i'm just fed having to go to the computer every time it needs charged.
    please help!

    Hi Laura,
You certainly can use a wall charger if you purchase it seperately. One is shown on thispage and it is compatible with the 5th generation iPods. You simply plug the charger into the wall and use your existing dock cable (USB) to connect to the charger.
