30gig ipod battery life?

just got a new ipod 30gig with video and all that jazz...in black ooo looks very sexy. but the battery life doesnt seem to last very long, whats the offical time its suppost to last? becuase its not going very long. anyone got any ideas?
thanks

It depends how you use the iPod. The backlight, equalisers, album art etc all eat up a certain amount of battery. If you watch even a small amount of video, it eats up your battery too.
If you're genuinely concerned about it, run a test:
Disable any equaliser settings you have, disable the backlight, turn off the view album-art option and set it to "Shuffle Songs". Sit a stopwatch next to your iPod and hit go.
The first few charges of a brand new iPod battery will give you a lower playback time than subsequent charges. If you try the above and get significantly less that 14 hours, you should maybe give Apple a call. If not, you just need to decide what features are important to you and decide on the tradeoff between them and your battery life.

  • Problems with ipod battery life AND new software

First of all, I'm not 100% sure if my ipod is fifth generation... it's a 30 GB and I've had it since December 2006. This just seemed to be the only category it fit into.
But here we go: I have two major problems with my ipod that have arisen in only a period of a couple days.
First of all, my battery life suddenly got REALLY REALLY bad. I know there are already a bunch of threads with people complaining about their battery life, but mine is much worse. The battery life did progressively get a little worse over the past few weeks, but it was nothing major. But I turned my ipod on the other day, RIGHT after fully charging it, mind you, and within 2-3 minutes the battery was halfway discharged and in about 5 minutes it was almost dead.
And a couple of times, I had my ipod plugged into my iBook to charge, and the iBook went into sleep mode because I left it alone for a while. But after a couple hours I came back and the battery level was LOWER than when I plugged it in!!!! What's going on with this thing?
And then to make matters worse, I finally broke down and downloaded the new ipod software the other day (sorry I can't remember the version, but it's the most recent). Everything seemed OK until I turned on my ipod the next day. With the old software, when I would select "Music>" and then "Artists>" it would go to the list of artists like it's SUPPOSED to.
But now, when I select "Artists>" it then goes to a list entitled "Artists" and my ONLY option is "All>". If I click "All>" then it takes me to a second list called "All Albums" and my only option again is "All>". When I click it again, it takes me to a list called "All Songs" with NOTHING in it. At first, I was afraid the update had deleted all the music off my ipod, but I plugged it back into my computer and according to iTunes, everything was still there as if nothing had happened.
Is there anything I can do to remedy either of these problems? I am so frustrated with this thing, considering both of these things happened rather suddenly and the fact that my ipod is not even a year old and it's not like I've been abusing it or anything.

I've had both exact problems (listed below) within days of each other just like you. This is extremely effing frustrating and it appears Apple isn't doing sh|t about it.
Problem 1: Battery constantly discharges even when ipod is turned off.
Problem 2: After upgrading firmware to 1.2.2, all my content (songs, podcasts, everything) was gone.
I'm glad to say I was able to fix problem 2 after reading about reverting back to version 1.2.1. There are instructions in this forum on how to do it. If you are like me, you'll have to download the 1.2.1 files from Apple's website because they were no longer on my computer.
This dieing/dead battery problem is a major effing pain in the a$$. Like you say, the effing thing is dead after minutes. The only way it can be used for any length of time is to leave it plugged in to a charger.
No one seems to have a solution which is even more upsetting than the problem. Hey Apple, I want my money back!

  • HELP WITH VIDEO IPOD BATTERY LIFE

i recently purchased an ipod for my birthday and im very dissapointed in the battery life. can any1 tell me any tips to making a battery last longer? and ive noticed that it doesnt always charge up to full.
    please help, thanks

One thing you might want to try is letting your
batter die completely until your iPod won't even turn
on, and then recharging it fully. When you keep
recharging li-ion batteries when they do not need to
be, like when they're still half-charged, they will
burn out a lot quicker. The best thing is to
completely drain it each time before you recharge it.
Actually, that's the opposite of what I've heard. I heard it's better not to completely drain the battery before you recharge, and only do a full dischage every 30 charges or so to keep the battery fresh.

  • Poor ipod battery life

My ipod touch 5th gen gets terrible battery life, even with brightness all the way down, and the do not disturb and airplane mode and wifi on, please help

How long does a full charge do after charging for four hours?
What is the iuPoid donig during that time?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Speakers with Alarm and iPod Battery Life

    Hello everybody,
I am thinking to buy speakers with alarm for my wife's iPod video (30G). I have the following concern though. Since such kind of accessories charge iPod once I connect it, is it going to shorten the battery life due to frequent charging? Or is there any way to somehow disable charging if the battery is still OK?
    Thank you.

  • 3g iPod battery life and hard drive head...

    Hi all!
I have a 3G 20GB iPod, and sometimes the battery drains itself out even with a brand new battery and the iPod being shut off.
I can barely get 4-5 hours of playing time, no backlight, equaliser, and no songs skipping.
I found out that you can hear the head of the hard disk moving even when the iPod is turned off. One of my relative has a 3G 15GB iPod and she's experiencing the exact same problem of battery life, and her iPod's hard drive make's the exact same noise. And she also has a brand new battery.
So can you listen to your iPod, (even between times when the iPod has stored the data to it's RAM the head of the hard drive is still making some kind of movement) and tell me what you think.
I've tried to install all previous versions of iPod software to no avail.
For now I have completely erased the drive with "zero all" along with a surface test by Tech Tool Pro, and it seems to have made a difference.
Time will tell, post your observations and I will keep you posted.

The largest detractors for battery life are the obvious ones like backlight usage, anything that makes the HDD seek (FFW, skip track, etc...) using EQ, and volume. There are many other areas but most are pretty minor. Alot of it actually depends on the chip that regulates energy to the player. Supposedly we will be seeing new chips that double or triple battery life on these mp3 players in the near future but we shall see.
Hard disk is by far the biggest user, backlight uses some (but you wouldn't have the backlight on, and it's not good for the life of the EL panel either). EQ seems to have issues on some players where it uses far too much power in my opinion, specifically the Smart Volume function. I hope Creative can address the power demands of this if possible. Creative managed to double the base battery life of the Touch with the changes they made in some of the hardware, so greater li'ves are definitely achievable.
Rich_T: I've used your excellent test data as the start of a battery curve graph I'm putting together. I'm taking Creative's benchmark data and anything else I see to try and create curves for the players under different circumstances. I think once we have a base curve for one circumstance we can probably extrapolate it to all the other players, at least as a guess.
If anyone at Creative has any battery life figures for different scenarios (which I would be amazed if they didn't) it would be very useful

  • Ipod battery life-someone plz help!!!

Okay, so I didn't realize that you had to charge your ipod before you use it (because I didn't realize there was a back to the lil instructions that come with it) so now the battery doesn't last very long. Is there any way I can fix this or get new batterys? Does anyone know?
*Please help because I just spent 200 dollars on my ipod and I don't want it to be _screwed up_!*
    HELP!
    Thanks! =)

you can buy a battery online and install it yourself or you can send it into a 3rd party dealer and get the work done there...

  • IPod Battery Life?

Could someone please give me a rough estimate as to the typical amount of time a battery should last (when being used, not at "rest") for a 5-th gen video iPod? Thanks very much!
    HP   Windows XP

I have 30GB iPod and I listen to music about 2.5 hours a day and usually on the third day I recharge it. It never switched off due to low batteru level, so I should say that battery is ok, however some problems with videos may occure. Usually it is impossible to watch the whole movie without recharging your battery. But this is not a huge problem since iPod is Music device and is not designed to watch full-length movies.

  • IPhone vs. Video iPod battery life & sound

For those that have used both, which will play video the longest - iPhone or Video iPod?
Also, which is loudest? I use the Video iPod on flights with noise cancelling earphones but find it is still not loud enough. Would the iPhone be louder in this case?

  • Battery Life - Advice

    Hi all,
Needing a little bit of advice - not sure if I am doing something wrong.
When I chose my MP3 player, I originally didn't want an i-Pod due to the fact I'd heard the battery life was rubbish. When we went to the shop to buy the Sony MP3 I wanted, we were basically talked into the i-Pod by a very enthusiastic salesman who was a hardcore i-Pod fan.
I've got the new 30gig video i-Pod and he told me that although it advertises around 20hrs battery life he said I could ideally expect between 6-10hrs of CONTINUOUS PLAY on the battery, which was fine.
However I am finding I am getting approx 1.5hrs of continuous play at the very most before my battery goes into the red from full.
Is this due to something I am doing wrong, or are all i-Pods generally like this? Or do you think its a problem with mine?
    Any advice would be appreciated!!

From new, the iPod battery can take time getting to full potential. There are a lot of factors that affect battery usage such as what size your music files are, how often you use the click wheel or the backlight etc. As far as battery life goes, the hours Apple quotes are based on continual play of music files, AAC 128kbps file format, no backlight and no access via the scroll wheel during play. How long you get from your battery really depends on how you are using your iPod.

  • My Brand New Nano's Battery Life is Short

I just got my first Ipod nano last week so this may be my fault cause I'm still learning. The first time I charged my battery it lasted about 3 hours. I though it may have been because it was new that it was depleted so fast. I fully charged it last night & have used it for about 2 hours and the battery shows only about 25% life left. Nowhere near 14 hours. Is it my Ipod or am I doing something wrong? Should I return it to the store from which I purchased it (this would be the 2nd return. My first one I bought 3 days earlier would get really hot on the back & start sounding scratchy)?

First, know that the meter is inaccurate. Just because it says half-empty doesn't mean it is half-empty. Also, the battery may not last the full 14 hours until after a few charge cycles, where you charge the battery, then use it all up, then charge it again.
