30gig/itunes synch problem-first time reported

ok heres the deal:
when i go to put more songs on my ipod, everything goes fine until i click and drag the "songs" icon on the left onto the "___'s ipod" icon, also on the left. now what happens is that, even if i havn't changed ANYTHING in the itunes library since the last time i put songs on the ipod, it selects random songs, already on the ipod, and puts them on again, thus creating doubles on the ipod. it's very annoying. please respond.
a second problem involves only the ipod. when i select "Artist" under the 'music' banner, what happens is when i select an artist, instead of then showing me all their albums, it jumps to a random album under that artist and only shows me the songs from that album (EXAMPLE: when i select Rolling Stones, instead of showing me "all, flashpoint,let it bleed, and "a bigger bang", it jumps to let it bleed and only shows me those songs WHAT GIVES?!? and i can only get to the other songs from other albums by showing all the songs. again, please help.

1) Are you manually updating? If so, this can happen. If you tell iTunes to add the library onto the iPod, songs that are already on the iPod may be added again.
