30p capture JVC HDV FCP 5

I am on set for a feature being shot on the JVC HDV camera and cannot get FCP 5 to capture more than a few seconds of the footage on a 2 gig powerbook with tons of super fast external memory using a firewire. Sometimes we can get a whole take and sometimes not. We are recording at 30p which should not be a problem. Are there any patches out there or has anyone else had this problem? Are there settings that need to be a certain way other than putting the capture options on 30p 720? It is almost as if there are dropped frames but the footage is fine and time code consistent.

Hi
Thanks for your quick reply, in the meantime I did something which seems to have fixed my capture problem, along the lines of what you were suggesting... my sequence was set to 30p and I changed it back to 29.97 and now it's capturing into the project. I captured a few minutes at this and it seems fine so I'll go with that.
I'm using an NTSC model HVX200 camera, it was a few thousand Euro cheaper than the EU model and I was able to buy it almost a year before the camera was available here, so that's the reason for NTSC mode, I usually shoot in DVCproHD 720p 24fps for short film material, so really there's the advantage for the US model in the first instance.
Thanks again!

  • 30P Capture Issue

I have tapes that were shot at 30p on a JVC GY-HD110U but I do not have the camera anymore to capture with. I use both a Sony HC7 and HC5 to capture with and don't have a problem with any footage but things shot with the JVC. The tapes will playback and are viewable on the LCD screens of the HC7 and HC5 but when I capture the video is not showing up in FCP, it's like it's just not even being sent from the camera. Anyone have this problem or an idea around this without using another JVC camera?

The JVC HDV format is must different than Sony's HDV format. You cannot use the Sony HDV camera or deck to capture JVC HDV footage. I am amazed that it even plays back.
The Sony's can playback and be used to capture Canon's HDV format, for they are the same. JVC is the one who walked off the beaten path.
Gonna need to rent a JVC HDV camera mate.

  • JVC HDV Capture settings + Hardware advice for HDV capture

We have 6.02 FCP Studio2. We shot JVC HDV 720 60P footage (1280 x 720) and are trying to capture thru FCP. We have the JVC GY-HD200U camera and the JVC BR-HD50 outboard deck. Other than the AJA HD 422 device, what are my options (hardware and software) to capture with Log & Capture in FCP? I need In/Out points of course.
JVC HDV says it has a great HDV workflow in FCP, but they don't tell you how (at least where we have looked on their website)
Unfortunately, Blackmagic's Intensity Series cannot control the devices via the HDMI link (One HDMI output is on the JVC BR-HD50 deck). We thought that might work.
Can anyone give us advice on the settings in FCP to control our HDV deck or Camera? We would prefer to keep everything digital, via firewire
Thank you everyone for your help. I did search for this topic and found nothing. I am sorry if this has already been covered...

Connect your deck or camera via firewire to your Mac, and then select the easy setup in FCP's FCP menu that matches the format you've shot. I'm pretty sure for a device control setting either your camera or deck would use HDV Firewire Basic as a device control setting. Other than that it should use the stock preset for the format you've shot.

  • JVC HDV capture problems

I'm having major problems capturing from JVC GYHD101 camera.
My MacBook Pro can control the camera just fine and all my settings seem to be right, the computer will capture, but it will not capture constantly. The capture window will stay open and not report any problems, but what it will do is capture, then stop capturing, create a file (while the tape is still playing) and then continue capturing, even though the tape has moved on.
If anyone could help figure this out I would be massively greatful!

No, hense me posting in the FCP forum.
I discovered why it was doing it, FCP splits the clips where the camera has been started and stopped. And even though there's a box in the settings to untick to stop this, it doesn't actually stop it.
So when capturing from JVC HDV, I've found it is impossible to leave the tape running and capture the whole thing.

  • Capturing 60i to FCP5 from Jvc HDV

Hello! I am having a really hard time capturing 60i and 24p footage into our Final Cut Pro 5 system. We have tried the codecs and even changing the settings. Can anyone walk us through this? We have a brand new JVC HDV camera and can get the 30 frame rate to capture but not the others. We are connected to the camera through a fire wire.
We have plenty of hard drive space.
    Thanks a bunch!

So far the ONLY frame rate from teh JVC that FCP supports is 720p30.
You can see if HDVxDV.com or www.lumierehd.com have versions that support and convert that format. FCP cannot do it at this time.

  • Capturing JVC ProHD footage

We have 7 stations running FCP 5.1.4. There are some PowerMac G5, iMac intel and MBPros.
We normally shoot many films a day using JVC 201 cameras, shooting in HDV 720p25.
We detected that when capturing using the right easy setup settings (HDV - 720p25) FCP breaks the clips as if there were timecode breaks.
We changed a parameter in the JVC tape decks to mask out the timecode breaks, but it's still breaking the clips. Now less frequent, but still there.
I tried with iMovie, but the same happens. I presume that the same QT routines are in use.
Our best result was to change the pre-roll time in the capture device settings, to lose less footage.
I've contacted JVC Europe and sent a tape to them, so they can analyse the media.
I still haven't got an answer about that.
They captured the footage using Edius in a PC, and it showed no broken timecodes.
Before we were using Sony HDV 1080i50 and never had this problem, except when there was a defect in the camera.
It was never a daily problem.
So I'm guessing that there could be something wrong in the QT capture settings.
Something that's outside the user control.
We changed to JVC HDV ProHD tapes (they were Sony HDV tapes before) but still the same problem.
    Any idea out there?
    Did anybody else experience this?
I'll try with a JVC 111 camera, if there's any difference.
    Thanks !!

Well, I've made some tests with the new firmware.
    It's VTR CPU 101.
I've recorded a 1 hour tape, captured it, and the clips were only split by start/stop detection, so there were no "broken" clips.
Tried re-capturing footage already recorded before the firmware update and it's still being split.
The tape deck, although it didn't have the firmware updated, produced the same results as capturing with the camera: clips not broken.
So, it seems that, at least for PAL cameras (don't know if it's the same firmware for NTSC ones) JVC find the solution.
    Cheers

  • Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
    Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.

  • Sony HVR-HD1000E capture setting in FCP 6.0.6

One of my clients has a Sony HVR-HD1000E mini-dv camera & contacted me when they were having trouble capturing video.
The camera captures at HDV 1080i50, so set FCP to this but says it cannot communicate with the camera. If I set FCP to DVCPRO HD-1080i50 then it communicates with the camera but when I try to capture, Preview is disabled. With the capture window open I then change the setting to DV PAL Anamorphic & apply the setting the preview window becomes active. I then change it back to DVCPRO HD-1080i50 & apply, the preview window is active & I can capture without any problems.
I spoke to Sony & they agree with me that FCP should be set to HDV 1080i50 & cannot explain why there is a problem other than FCP is having a bit of a wobble & needs reloading/updating etc.
I have connected the camera to three different machines with FCP 6 & all do the same, also tried different firewire cables but no difference.
I can tell you that it worked fine for about 6 months but no one knows on what settings so I'm hoping that someone with the same camera reads this & can tell me what settings they use.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hello there,
I am owner of HVR HD1000E and I am working with FCP 6.05. Here is the setup you should have in FCP and everything will work just perfect:
    OPEN - File - Audio/video settings:
    Summary: Seq.present - HDV 1080i50
                    Capture preset - HDV
Device control preset  - Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
Video Playback (if use) - Digital cinema desktop Prewiew
                    Audio Playback - Default
    Sequence preset: HDV 1080i50
    Capture preset: HDV
Device control preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
    Thats it!
Open Sequence in FCP and check Settings:
    General: Frame size: 1440x1080 (16:9)
                 Pixel aspect ratio: HD 1440x1080
                 Field dominance: None
                 Compressor: HDV 1080i50
                 Audio: 48kHz, 16bit, stereo
For export use: Quicktime movie, CURRENT Settings! If you want small file size and very quick export, than unchecked "make movie self contained". But if you wish your mov file transport to other computer..., than you must check "make movie self contained". In booth cases you're movie will be 1920x1080 HD crystal picture!
I hope my help isn't too late!

  • Can't capture video with FCP 5.1

    Hi All,
Here is the case. I'm trying to capture the video from my newly baught Sony HDR FX7. Here are the specs:
I've connected it thru Firewire 400 on the back of my G5.
    G5 660GB HD, 5.5Gb RAM
In Easy set up I've selected HDV-1080i60
When I go to file-log and capture, it connects to camcorder and says VTR OK on the bottom of the screen.
When capturing the video (after I've connected to log and capture I push play on camcorder and then click capture now on FCP) I could see on the capture screen and my video running but here an there a green line would cross the film and then it would slow down for a 10th of a second and line would run accouss the capture window again. The type of lines you'd get in the old movie? .
After I've captured all 5 sigments I had on the tape and when I tried to play (I went to file-import-file, I've selected the captured clip from my internal HD where the FCP put the files). The file opened in browser. And then it open in preview window of FCP. At this point the clip that is 1 minute long would play for 2-4 second and end there. The quality of it was also very, very poor (and I filed it at HD 1080i.
So, the quality was really poor. It was the case with all 5 clips I've captured from FX7. All of them 2-4 sec. long and very poor quality.
Now, if I try to play the clip from camcorder and select "in" and "out" points and then batch capture via the same log and capture window, it would tell me that it's "unable to locate timecode, the timecode appears to be missing from the tape. Please verify that tape is timecoded correctly"
So, I was reading this forum and did this:
Tried to go to user preferences and set "on time code brake" select "make new clip"
    Nothing helped.
Also it's worth noting. When I push play on camcorder and click capture now, new window comes up and it says on the bottom of it "searching for meadia..." press esc to stop or something like that. May be it's not finding it?
Also, when I first filmed with this camera, I would stop after every clip, turn off the camera, plug it into tv and preview what I've filmed.
Either way, the few seconds of the clips that I"ve got are very bad quality. When I view the clips on my TV and monitore connected thru 3 colored cables, the video was ok, I'd even say good, just too much noice in it. But quality of capture is horrible.
If anyone is readying this, could you please give me some ideas where to go with this. I don't know what to do from here

    Question is answered

  • HELP. Capture the Hdv with the Apple prores422 Capturing, but i can't chande the name of the file

    Hello there,
i'm conforming an hdv shot while i capture it into FCP whit the setting of Apple pro res422.
So the point is that when i start to capture the only thing that i can controle is to give the name of the file that i'm going to capture..
everything is ok, but whet i have to chage the tape and so..the name of the file it does not work, even if i write the new name he keep the last name that i  use...
i don't know what to do, i can't change the name after i capture because he capture the tape creating different file at all the stop of the shooting, so that i have alot of file for one tape..
it looks like he keep in memory some protocols with the first name i give..but how i can change it when i change the tape??
    thnak u
    fede

When you are logging your tape prior to capture you can do this.  For example, tape one contains scenes 1,2 and three, multiple takes of each.  Go to the beginning of scene one take 1.  Mark an in point.  Go to the end of all the takes of scene 1 and mark an out point.  Log the clip as scene one.  Do the same for scenes 2 and three.  Hit the batch capture button.
Then as it captures it creates scene 1, scene1-1, scene 1-2, scene 1-3, et cetera.
    I HATE HDV.

  • My external hard drives are causing problems when i capture DV in FCP

We have external hard drives (2 different brands lacie and WD) are causing dropped frames when I capture DV in FCP. This only happens when they are connected via firewire 800. When I connect them using USB everything works great. Any ideas why this could be? We have 2 of each drive and 2 older mac pros and they both have this issue with every combination of drives I try. I've also tried reseting the ports with no luck...

Connecting your camcorder to even 1 FW drive constitutes daisy-chaining.  Even if you have two FW ports in your Mac, connecting a drive to one port and your camcorder to the other is the same as daisy-chaining as far as  your Mac is concerned.
Try capuring from your camcorder with no exernal FW drives attached.  Verify that works before trying anything else.
Also, I noticed your profile says you have a Mac Pro.  You might consider adding a FW card in order to get extra FW ports that are not on the same FW bus as the built-in FW ports.  Then you could connect your external FW drives to the card; and your camcorder to the built-in ports and it should work.

  • Capturing 24P HDV

I'm currently trying to capture (using in and out points) 24P footage from the Canon XH-A1s. The capture starts near the specified in point (in the relatively few tests I've done anyway), but rolls past the out point. The longer the clip, the farther it records past the out point. I noticed that the capture window is using 30 fps timecode.
Is Premiere not able to accurately use in and out points when capturing 24P HDV?

I don't do HDV, but I have read that this program is better than PPro's HDV module

  • JVC HDV Capture Problem

FCP=6.01; Camcorder=GY-HD200U; Deck=BRHD50U. The firmware on the deck and camera are the latest (0102 for the camera and 0108 for the deck) and I'm still getting a continuously recorded clip broken into several clips on log & capture. I'd rather not use the "uncontrollable" setting for capture if possible. Does any one know of a patch either in FCP or by JVC to solve this issue?
    Thanks,

This issue probably has to do with your video format - let us know:
Format shot (HDV 720p30 by chance?)
    Capture settings
    Connection type (firewire?)
This will help us narrow down the issue.
If you are sure the connection and settings are ok, try power-cycling everything, which helps to reset the deck's connection, make sure you are capturing to a properly formatted drive other than you system drive, etc.
Was this tape previously recorded on by any chance? I've seen that generate TC breaks during capture in the past.
    Hope this helps -
