30p or 60i conversion to 24p...

i am making a section for a mountain bike movie for one of my friends...i will be able to film it on my camera in eithere 30p or 60i... well the company i will be sending the segment too wants everything in 24p because it will be mixed in with some 16mm footage and other 24p footage (dvx100b) sooo is there a way to convert it in final cut pro? or a stand alone app i can get for mac to do this?
thanks.

As Jerry said, better to get a camera that does 24P. If that is impossible, I'd go for Nattress Film Effects - http://nattress.com - and shoot 60i.
But my true second choice would be to shoot it at 30P and edit it into a 29.97 timeline along with the 16mm footage as it will have been transfered with a pulldown. I think that would give you the best results. I honestly think that 30P will give you a better temporal resolution for activity like mountain biking than mock 24P...

  • 60p/60i Conversion to 24p - Best Practices?

Our studio recently purchased a new camera for some run-and-gun shooting. Unfortunately, it does not support 24p natively, only 60p & 60i. It does, however, support shutter speeds from 1/2 all the way to 1/4000. What advice can you give regarding pulldown conversion into a 24p project, both for camera settings and FCPX?
Please note that I'm looking for 1:1 speed, NOT slow-mo.

Manually create an FCPX project that is 24p (select Custom Video Properties and from the Rate dropdown, select 23.98p from the dialog ). When you apply your 60p/60i clips to the storyline, FCPX will automatically "conform" your clips to the new frame rate.
Your shutter speed has nothing to do with frame rate. It does, however, affect the appearance of the video. The higher the shutter speed, the more "juttery" the video will appear. The best frame rate for a 24p finished product is 1/48th of a second (or the next nearest available shutter speed, e.g.: 1/50th or 1/60th of a second.)  You can probably get away with up to about 1/100th of a second, but beyond that you will probably start noticing the severe lack of motion blur (e.g.: a bird flying will start to visually appear more than once in the video - two distinct images along its flight path.)

  • 30p or 60i

I am hoping that someone can give me a quick lesson on the (dis)advantages of shooting 30p or 60i, using a canon HF100 (HD). I understand this will be very subjective, and i will be doing my own tests. But I would like to understand the basic concept to begin my testing.
I will eventually be putting these videos on the web. The subject material will primarily be live music performance, but in a recording studio - so the environment is controlled.
Since the camera records at 1080i - is the 30p simply a trick to make it 'look' progressive - and if so, are there detriments to the process? Is it something that should be done in the conversion? Obviously, I want to film, convert and output in the best quality possible.
Also, does anyone have an opinion on whether it's best to transfer using ProRes or use Toast to convert the data to another format (DVPro???) before I bring it into FCP? Is the HQ vs. standard based on the data - or a preference/file size issue?
    Thanks in advance.

If you're aiming for the Web, then go 30p. Movement looks much better with progressive.
It's not that subjective, actually. Check out this animation:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlace#Problemscaused_byinterlacing
1080i30p is true progressive embedded in an "interlaced" stream.
You should be able convert it to ProRes in the Log and Transfer window.
HQ files will be bigger, but HQ is probably not necessary unless you plan
on doing lots of effects and color-correction.
    Have fun!

  • 60i footage to 24p

Please understand that i am a rookie.
I have read other posts but i am a little confused. I am recording some footage in 24p, but it really records it in 60i. i=interlaced so the picture is not really progressive right? I am using a Canon HF S10.
So I log and transfer and it brings it in to FCP at ( 29.97/Apple Pro Res 422/Square Pix ) in its own clip. I did not see a way to change that.
I import to the new sequence, say yes to change settings. Changes to ( 1920x1080/HDTV 1080i (16x9)/Odd Field Dominace/29.97 Edit TimeBase/Apple ProRes 422).
I export with current settings. Open with quicktime and there is interlaced video. I export with Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p, there are interlaced lines and in some areas looks worse.
My final plan is to record to Blu-Ray in 24p, and also export the best possible dvd.
What tricks do i need to do so that I get the 60i footage to 24p into Final Cut Pro for editing, and make sure i export that way?
Also i know that Apple Pro Res is awsome to work with, but it requires alot of space. What is the next down version that i could use that will still produce good quality DVDs.
    Thank you in advance....

  • 1080 60i 1080 25/24p Whats required?

I currently have a large amount of footage that is 1080 60i that i need to convert into 1080 25 or 24p for the 'film look'. Does FCProHD allow you to do this? If so whats best and quickest way of doing it as i have a large amount of footage and time is a factor? If not can anyone point me in the right direction for alternative software? Many thanks:-)

Take a look at Graeme Nattress's Standards Conversion Filters.
Not sure if they will do exactly what you want, but if you have any questions, Graeme is usually pretty quick to reply to an e-mail.
    good luck.

  • How to tell if an HF100 clip was shot in 30p or 60i?

I have a bunch of old HF100 footage that I want to re-edit. Trouble is, I can't remember which ones are 30p and which are 60i (I want to tag them differently with iMakeFullHD). Other than looking at them, is there some quantitative way of telling which is which -- either from the mts file metadata or from the imported iMovie 09 movie metadata?
    Thanks!

  • 60i footage into 24p sequence

    Hi,
I have 60i footage that I want to import into a 24p sequence. The scene was filmed in 60i specifically because I want to slow it down 50% in my premiere sequence and the 24p does not allow for good slow motion.
My concerns are how to do it, and how to (if necessary) de-interlace the 60i?
    Thanks!

  • Is it Possible to Convert 60i Footage to 24p?

I was wondering if it's possible to convert footage shot in 60i to 24p and if it'll look good.
Like, if I took 60i footage and put it out at 24 FPS in progressive scan through compressor, would it take out the correct frames? Or would it look all weird?
Just curious if it looks good and if there's a good way to do it.

Probably your best bet would be http://www.nattress.com and his standards converter. Moves 60i to 24.
    Good luck,

  • Working with 30p or 60i

Hey, so i just got an HF100 and supposedly it records in 30P which is really recording 30p in a 60i wrapper. Currently my capture preset is at Prores 422(HQ) and sequence preset are Prores 422 (HQ) in 1920x108030P. Since the hf100 isn't recording in "true" 30P but rather a 60i wrapper should my sequence preset be 1920x108060i or should i leave it at 1920x108030P? I'm looking for the most seamless way to edit these AVCHD files for final output to web, standard dvd, and possibly blu-ray when that option (apple supported) becomes available for my mac pro. So am i actually working with 30P footage or 60i out of this camera? Let me know! THanks so much for the help.

I had a similar query a few months ago with my HV20 which can shoot HDV at 25p.
I was told to use the 50i setting so you should be OK with the 60i.
Your footage has 2 identical fields per frame (Progressive Segmented Frame) as opposed to true progressive with only one. In the HV20 manual Canon states it is shooting 50i.
Here are the details of Progressive Segmented Frame shooting should you be interested:-

  • Multiclip with 30p and 60i footage

I recently did a shoot with 3 cameras-- two of them were at 30p, and one was set to 60i. FCP won't let me make a multiclip of them because they are not in the same format. I assume the most expedient thing would be to convert the 60i material into 30p. Is that correct? What is the best way to do this with Final Cut Studio (FCP or Compressor-- how?)
    Thanks.

    What settings would I use?
Quicktime uncompressed 8-bit, 10-bit, or one of the Mpeg-2 settings?
My guess is that I want to leave everything the same as it is, only change it from 60i to 30p.
I think I need the "Compressor for Dummies" kind of an answer.
    Thanks.

  • Can FCE convert PF24 (24p @ 60i) into true 24p?

I am looking at purchasing a Canon HF-S100 which can shoot in 24p @ 60i. I use FCE 4. Is it possible to have FCE4 or some other program take this footage and convert it to true 24p? If not, can it be done with FC Pro? Thanks for the help!
    Brian

FCE does not support 24p media. You need FCS. You would need to completely decompressed the media into another format. Compressor can do it. At high quality it's a very slow process.

  • Can Apple tools convert 1080 (60i) HDV to 24p ProRes well?

Folks, I have video that's HDV (1440x1080) at 60i that I need to convert to 24p. I have not been able to successfully do this transcode and have smooth result.
Are any of the Apple tools up for this task or do I need to look elsewhere for third party tools? I've tries several variations of compressor settings to see if I can get smooth playback, but instead the results are choppy and occasionally smooth for a moment.
    Thanks.

If you have to mix the footage, you might try adding pulldown to the 24P footage to make it run at 30. I believe Graeme's Standards converter will add pulldown - or Shake. Then you can cut the 30fps footage into a 60i timeline...
As to dealing with HDV native timeline - maybe you should edit in a AIC timeline?

  • Editing 60i footage at 24p (slowing it down so it plays at 80% speed

    Hello,
So i need to cut a montage from 60i video that is going to go into a 24p timeline... I'd love to treat the footage as if it was shot at 24p (seperate the fields and slow it down 80%) so i could just cut it in and be done with it... any idea how to do this?

Well, the easiest way I can think of is to load the clip into Cinema Tools and resolve it to 23.98 fps. That just changes the frame rate. Separating the fields, BTW, won't do anything for you.

  • 1080i/50i conversion to 24p

    Hi there,
I have read many articles and forums all over the internet, but have not found a definitive workflow for accomplishing getting my footage into a usable form.
First, I shot and captured from a Sony HVR-Z1U to FCP using the HDV 1080/50i capture codec.
I purchased the Nattress plugins for deinterlacing. What should I do next? If I render out deinterlaced footage, the info on the render files still says it's 1080/50i. How do I make it 25p?
My final output will be DVD but would like to keep my options open.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
MacBook Pro 2.16 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I got the film effects package. Is there a way to convert the actual footage files to 25p with film effects? If I get the Standards Conversion kit, what setting do I use, and where does it store the convertede footage? In render directory or capture scratch?
    Thanks for the reply!
