32-bit EFI problem HELP !!!

Hello. When snow leopard was coming out ,we were promised 64-bit ability. We rejoiced, but then later found out that the "efi" was still 32 bit. Many of us complained about false advertising etc , but then we were comforted by people that told us not to worry, that the EFI was meaningless and that there was no advantage to having "64 bit efi" unless we were going to use millions of GB's of Ram . I was appeased and moved on. Well today i was shopping at the Apple.com/store looking to upgrade my video card and was looking at some nice looking cards . The "EVGA GeForce GTX 285" for example ( see nice specs http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW387ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU2MDA ), so i glanced at the "questions and answers" portion of the page and in it a man asked if this card would work with a Mac Pro 1.1 . The answer was no. Even worse, the reason it wouldnt work , wasnt because the interface/connection type was newer and my Mac Pro was physically unable to handle its awesome specs , but rather because my Mac Pro was "32-bit efi" . This of course angered me some because all this time i was told that us complaining about 32-bit EFI was ignorant since 64-bit EFI was only beneficial if one was a billionaire and had theoretical amounts of Ram , but today i witnessed a more obtainable benefit that was withheld from me . Even worse, the internets are filled with experts that say that my Mac Pro is fully capable of having "64-bit EFI" but that Apple for reasons unknown simply chooses to prevent it . So a few questions
1. Exactly WHAT is the best/most optimal video card that my Mac Pro can "handle" ? (im looking with something with hundreds of cores ie Tesla or the one i mentioned)
2. What is the reason my Mac isnt 64-bit EFI yet?
3. Is there an update in the future or does apple expect me to buy a brand new Mac Pro over something they can fix in a second if they willed it ?

1. Exactly WHAT is the best/most optimal video card that my Mac Pro can "handle"? (im looking with something with hundreds of cores ie Tesla or the one i mentioned)
ATI Radeon HD 4870
<http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU2NTc>\
(Despite what Apple says, it will work in any Mac Pro.)
2. What is the reason my Mac isn't 64-bit EFI yet?
Because it has EFI-32 firmware.
3. Is there an update in the future
Unlikely. If Apple updated old Mac Pros to 64-bit EFI, all of the 32-bit EFI NIVIDIA cards wouldn't work.
or does Apple expect me to buy a brand new Mac Pro over something they can fix in a second if they willed it?
They can't fix it without causing problems for those older Mac Pros with NVIDIA cards (which were the most common cards in those Macs).
Your Mac Pro can run 64-bit applications, there is the ATI upgrade board for faster graphics, it can handle up to 32 GB RAM. and you can install larger, faster, hard drives, so there should be no need to replace it for most uses..

  • Windows Vista won't start or install - firmware or EFI problem?

I am running Snow Leopard on a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, late 08 - early 09 model. I have been using boot camp to run Vista for the past year with no problem. This morning, I tried to start up Vista and it wasn't working. I got the option key screen to choose between OSX and Vista, but after choosing vista, the cursor blinks once and I get a black screen. The computer is quiet and nothing seems to be running.
At first I thought it was a boot camp problem. So I went into OSX, de-partitioned the drive, and repartitioned it. I then stuck the Vista install disk in, and clicked through the boot camp assistant to reinstall. The computer restarted to begin the reinstall process, but instead of starting the install disk, it did the same thing - a single blip of cursor, and then a black screen.
I'm not technically savvy, but that seems like it's not a Windows problem, but a firmware or EFI problem. The computer will run OSX, but it won't run boot camp and it won't start from a CD-ROM. The only other steps I've taken are to run Software Update and the Disk Utility from Safari. Neither helped. I'm out of warranty and would love to be able to fix it without spending tons of money. Any help is appreciated.

open terminal, run the following command:
    sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
(press return, enter admin password, press return again)
output should look something like this:
    Betsy7:~ kj$ sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
    Password:
gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
    1 1 Pri GPT header
    2 32 Pri GPT table
    34 6
    40 409600 1 GPT part - "EFI System Partition"
    409640 316879664 2 GPT part - "RAPTOR"
    317289304 262144
    317551448 200889128 3 GPT part - "RAPTOR2"
    518440576 262144
    518702720 67287033 4 GPT part - "XP"
    585989753 82582
    586072335 32 Sec GPT table
    586072367 1 Sec GPT header
    The first line:
"gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0"
should be identical to mine. If the "Suspicious MBR"
line is missing, then it is a GPT problem, which indicates
that the MBR information is missing or more likely corrupt.
also the second and third lines will read:
    start size index contents
    0 1 PMBR
    instead of:
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
If the MBR info in the GPT partition is corrupt or missing,
then (obviously) Windows won't be bootable.
The only tool reliably capable (that I know of) of repairing (rebuilding) the GPT/EFI
without wiping off all partitions and repartitioning the drive
    is iPartition:
    http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
The command line program "gpt" is incomplete, so use
    it at your own risk:
    BUGS
The development of the gpt utility is still work in progress. Many necessary features
are missing or partially implemented. In practice this means that the manual page,
supposed to describe these features, is farther removed from being complete or useful.
As such, missing functionality is not even documented as missing. However, it is believed
that the currently present functionality is reliable and stable enough that this tool can be used
without bullet-proof footware if one thinks one does not make mistakes.

  • CS5 16-bit printing problem... seriously, still?!?

I just finally broke down and upgraded to CS5 and Snow Leopard after hearing about the no color management utility released last year.  I kinda figured the 16-bit printing problems would have been fixed in CS5 as well, but at least for me they haven't been.
For the last two years I've done my image editing in CS4, then switched over to CS3 for printing.  I saw this upgrade as a change to finally be able to do everything in one place, but when I try to print in 16-bit I get the exact same result I got in CS4-- dark, low saturation, warm color cast. I'm running an Epson 11880 on 10.6.8 with all current drivers/firmware.
I'm making sure to check 16-bit in both locations in the driver, could there be something else I'm missing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wonder if there is something different about the 8.65 drivers that doesn't default to Off (No Color Management). I sold my last Epson a couple of months back.
Why 8-bit prints fine but 16-bit doesn't seems really odd.  Might want to ask in the Yahoo Group forum. Surely there are others with the same setup.

  • [SOLVED] iMac 2111 (32-bit EFI) installation

I'm stuck with the installation on a iMac 2111 (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/i … specs.html) (the white plastic Intel iMacs).
The standard ISO won't boot at all ("Select CD-ROM boot type"-error).
Therefore I built a ISO without UEFI support that I'm now able to boot to the boot loader OS selection screen (where you can choose between: Boot Arch Linux (x86_64), Boot Arch Linux (i686), Boot existing OS, Run Memtest86+ (RAM test), Hardware Information (HDT), Reboot, and Power Off).
    There the system freezes completly.
Any ideas how to install ArchLinux on this machine?
Anybody managed to install ArchLinux sucessfully on an 32-bit EFI iMac?
Was quite simple problem: you have to replug the USB keyboard, then it becomes active once more.

Unless there's a firmware update for your Mac (in which case Software Update would alert you), you can't.

Thank you both for your responses but my daughter was reassured by the salesman in the iStyle store (official Apple store in the UAE) that iMessages would work but conceded that FaceTime wouldn't. My iTunes account is registered in the uk and my daughter's iPhone has iMessages even though she bought it (and uses it) in Dubai. Can anyone else throw any light on this?

My wife's ipod nano was plugged into the machine overnight.
When she went running with it, there were no songs on it.  She checked the computer and was horrified to see that the playlists had disappeared and most of the songs had disappeared.

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
You may have to force iPad/iPod into Recovery Mode

KT333 Ultra; fuzzy logic, 1.6xp overclocking problem help !!!!!

Not that I am an expert o/c but here are some thoughts on the matter.
My comments are based on my experiences of the KT3 Ultra2 which is basically the same as the Ultra version.
This mobo does not have the ability to lock the PCI/AGP bus freely from the FSB. However, it does have dividers. At 133 a 1/4 divider kicks in. Above 152FSB the 1/5 divider works, so that at 166 the PCI & AGP buses will be back in sync. If you are o/c your cpu, don't go from 133 to 145, etc since you will be running the PCI/AGP buses further out of whack. Just go to either the mid 150's or to 166 in one jump. The other problem / issue relates to your cpu. From what you say you have one of the old Palominos which are not great o/c's. I would personally o/c your cpu from the BIOS rather than 'Fluffy Logic' which I would tend to stay away from.
With a 166FSB cpu a very stable o/c would be 175-177 beyond 180 gets decidedly tricky.
    Hope this helps

  • Itunes keeps closing as soon as i open it and states 'windows has detected a problem' HELP!!!!

Help!! Itunes keeps closing straight away and message states 'windows has detected a problem' HELP ASAP PLEASE!!!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

I had the same issue and I'm running Windows 7.  Tried working with technical support for several hours but they were no help.  They just had me doing the same things over and over, offering no real answers.  I finally got fed up and have decided to return my product for a full refund.

  • EFI problem related to Boot Camp

Hi I'm new to the forums,
I'm having problems booting into my windows partition on my MacBook. Everything was fine until I had a recent power failure while using Windows 7 for office work. My Macbook just turned off with no warning. Upon turning on the macbook I get the "No Bootable Device" black screen.
I figured the Windows partition corrupted itself after the power failure. I proceed to delete the windows partition via Boot Camp Assistant in OSX, divide the hard drive again, and go ahead with reinstalling Windows 7. But here's the problem I can't seem to figure out. When formatting the BOOTCAMP partition in the Windows Installer to NTFS, I run into this error:
    http://i49.tinypic.com/1043i53.jpg
    http://i48.tinypic.com/167mux4.jpg
    http://i49.tinypic.com/1zxulo1.jpg
Probably the entire hard disk corrupted after the power failure? Okay, so I freshly reinstall Snow Leopard deleting all the contents on the HD. I even performed a complete format using the Zero Out method in Disk Utility. When the OSX install completed I divided the partition again with Boot Camp Assistant and ran the windows installer only to run into the same error like pictured above. Tried this method again but also ressetted NVRAM/PRAM and SMC. Still no luck.
So I'm thinking some part of the HD isn't working. I remove the HD from the macbook and replace it with the original 80GB hard drive that came with it. This time, instead of installing OSX, I formatted the hard drive in FAT32 with Disk Utility, and proceeded to install Windows 7 without OSX. I STILL get the same error though. Can't ever get passed this error. Arghh. I guess its not an HD problem so I replace my 250gb HD back in.
Did some research on google and decided to run rEFIT for its custom boot screen. For the heck of it I decided to run the Windows Partition that was listed on boot screen. Here is where I run into this error:
    http://i49.tinypic.com/2mq6og5.jpg
It says: "The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume."
Could this be an EFI problem? Is something corrupted in the boot rom that is restricting me from booting into the windows partition? I already performed a reset for the NVRAM/PRAM and SMC.
I've tried to reflash the EFI again but OSX won't let me. It says: "This computer does not need this update"
Anybody have any suggestion to what I should do? I'm way out of warranty and have no Apple Care. There are no Apple Store within a 100 miles.

    Hi,
I am not sure what to suggest regarding the errors that you are having but I am also running Win7 on my Mac. When I first got my MB, I used BootCamp but I quickly changed to Fusion and then to Parallels (which I like the most) - primarily so I could boot into OSX and still have access to my PC VM's. Maybe you should look into switching your PC environment to VM. Most of the VM software has a feature to 'snapshot' your VM session. This way, if your MB should abruptly power off, you can always revert to one of the snapshots without having to re-install. Anyway, good luck I hope you get the problem resolved.
