32-bit Oracle8i to  64-bit oracle 9i

Hi,
We have a 32-bit Oracle 8i running on AIX4.3,we are planning to shift to a new physical server which is supposed to run AIX5.3 & 64-bit oracle 9i.In this case if I do a database export from the current live machine( 32-bit Oracle 8i running on AIX4.3) whether i can import it on 64-bit oracle 9i @ AIX5.3 without any issues?
Regards,
Cherry

I think yes. I would like to listen from others.
While exporting use 8i exp utility. While Importing use 9i imp utility.

  • Windows 7 64 bit, Access 2010 32 bit, Oracle 10G client 32 bit, Oracle database 10.2.0.4 64 bit

I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database from Windows 7 OS - 64 bit using
Access 2010 32 bit and Oracle 32 bit client version 10.2.0.1 installed on PC.
My user requires a 64 bit Windows 7 OS for other needs.
Oracle ODBC driver is 32 bit from Oracle 32 bit client.
In Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ODBC DSN setup software is located in:
C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe for 64 bit drivers - all DSN types setup and
C:\Windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe for 32 bit drivers - USER DSN setup
When I run the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I see the Version number is 6.1.7601.17632
I setup a User DSN using the 32 bit odbcad32.exe with a 32 bit ODBC driver.
Our Oracle TNSnames.ora file has our standard entries which have worked for years
(Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
    1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
    2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
    3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
    4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
    ODBC call failed
[Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0
             [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)
I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

    Thank you for your reply.
I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
    I found this small comment:
“There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
I tried it and it solved the problem!
With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.
    Solved.

  • Oracle DB 32-bit on a 64-bit architeceture

    All,
I apologize up front if this question was already posted.
We have a Dell Poweredge 2950 with 64bit architecture. Would it work if I install Oracle DB 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.3) Enterprise/Standard Edition x86, 32bit Edition?
    thanks in advance,
    chuck

And which OS is on this machine? Windows? Linux? 32bit OS or 64 bit OS? (64 bit hardware architecture does not necessarily mean OS is also 64 bit). In general , when the OS is 32bit, Oracle 32bit will run.

  • Diffrence in running oracle on 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS ?

    Hi ,
I am new to oracle , i would like to know what's the diffrence running oracle under 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS

i would like to know what's the diffrence running oracle under 32 bit OS and 64 bit OSWhat type of differences are you looking for? Basic one being you run 32 bit version of Oracle under 32 bit OS and 64 bit version under 64 bit OS.
Other being the availability of addressable memory in 32 and 64 bit versions (but that is more of an hardware level issue).

  • Oracle 11g, 64 bit, Forms 11g 64 bit on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

We just changed over to Windows 7 64 Bit now we trying to find out what version of Fusion Middleware will run on Windows 7 64 bit. Most posting say you can't install
Oracle 11g 64 bit on Windows 7 64 bit OS, but we have found a few that say they have found away to install 11g 64 bit. Not one of them shows you the install
from start to finish and some of the posting go back to 2009!
If this has been a problem from 2009 - present can some tell why Oracle has not provided a fix or update for Windows 7 64 bit and are they going to in the future?
If anyone knows how install Oracle 11g 64 bit, Forms 11g 64 bit on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit please let me know!
    Thanks!
    Monty

    Monty,
I assume that you mean the developer tools? They are kind of in limbo with 64-bit support for the dev tools, but if you want to get the latest (as of today) release working, you can do this:
    1). Install a 64-bit JDK
2). Install WLS 10.3.4 generic (use the 64-bit java)
    3). Install Forms/Reports 11.1.1.2 (install only, don't configure)
    4). Install Forms/Reports 11.1.1.4 (install only, don't configure)
5). Edit your PATH system variable so that it doesn't contain any parenthesis. I did this by creating a junction point for c:\program files (x86) and using the junction point in the path
6). Run the configuration utility to create the forms/reports domain. Be sure to specify the dev tools
7). Look in the start menu for the Reports Builder icon. It will be pointing to a batch file. Edit that batch file to comment out the lines that print a message and exit (because you're on 64-bit)
Not officially supported, but it works for me.

  • 64-bit database and 32-bit companion on same host oracle home problem

    Hi.
We have following situation in production.
Installed database version is 10.02.04. 64-bit,host Windows 2008 x64, now we are trying to install 32-bit companion cd and this time we are trying not to loose/kill our 64-bit oracle home inventory.
Last time 32-bit version was installed our 64-bit home vanished and attachHome script always returned error, it seems to me that 32-bit and 64-bit versions overwrite installation info to each other, only last install is visible.
When I run setup for 32-bit companion I don't see anything in installed products(it's not listing 64-bit oracle homes). We had a lot of problems with this, patch failing, no way to install anything anymore for 64-bit version...
So is it possible to install 32 and 64 bit homes on same host, can they coexist, and keep both homes(OUI homes info), are there any special steps or something?

Well I looked at Inventory.xml file, after 32-bit version was installed entry for 64-bit install was gone.
Although I can not confirm that 100 percent because 32-bit installation was not done by me, maybe other guy who did it manually delete it as I did with 32-bit version to return my 64-bit inventory.
So my options are to backup 64-bit inventory, install 32-bit companion my 64-bit inventory will be overwritten, backup 32-bit, delete 32-bit, restore 64-bit inventory and I'll have active 64-bit inventory. Now I have inventory for 64-bit and I can restore 32-bit or 64-bit inventory when I need it.
This woks by is there another way...somebody...

    Hi,
There is probably no much difference between the two.
The reason I have tried with 3.0.2 is that the minimun required RAM for installation is 4G.
With 3.1.1 it is 6 G, and I have a limitation in memory.
Or does someone know if it possible to perform the installation with less RAM that what is specified?
    Kind Regards.

  • SetDiagnosticDirectory(Diagnostics.java:54) [32-bit java on 64-bit machine]

On 64-bit LucidLynx Linux, If I run Oracle SQL Developer using 64 bit java, all is fine.
If I use 32-bit java, it doesn't start up and I get this fatal error:
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Cannot create <pwd>/?/.sqldeveloper/system1.5.5.59.69/o.ide/diagnostics
         at oracle.javatools.logging.Diagnostics.setDiagnosticDirectory(Diagnostics.java:54)
         at oracle.ide.IdeCore.startupImpl(IdeCore.java:1293)
<pwd> represents the current directory that I am in. That question mark appears as is.
If I run this as `sudo`, it works, cause it gets past the "permissions" problem. (but that's a red herring).
It should be trying to create the ".sqldeveloper/..." directory under my home directory, not in the present
working directory, and certainly not with a question mark as another directory name.
It appears that when using the 32 bit java (on a 64 bit machine), that whatever function
Oracle is using/spawning to determine the user and its
home directory, is failing, and the code just says, plop the diagnostics directory right here.
    How does one debug this?
(I tried running `jdb` but setting break points doesn't seem to have an effect)
( Aside: on a 32-bit LucidLynx Linux machine, using 32-bit java, SQL Developer works fine.
I have all the necessary 32-bit libs, as we use 32-bit Java on 64 bit machines for other apps as well.)

I'm pretty new to java and this is the first
first time i'm making a post here. I want to know, if
i write a java program in a 32 bit environment will
the same code work in a 64 bit Environment too. Does
java abstract the architecture too?Only if there's a JVM available for the target environment.
Note for example that Sun supports 64 bit AMD processors but not Intel. But when they do your Java code will work without changes.

  • 64-Bit Essbase on 32-bit BOX

    Hi All,
I would like to clarify on few points.
THere have been a lot of post sover here on the support matrix of Oracle EPM 11.1.1.3. I have gone through the Matrx and have a few queries.I would like to know whether my understanding is right.
    Which one is compatible
    32-Bit Essbase on 32-Bit Box - Compatible
32-Bit Essbase on 64-Bit Box - No additional benefits at essbase level. Can we expect an increase in performance at OS level?
64-Bit Essbase on 64-Bit Box - Improved performance both at essbase level and OS level.
Now, Can we install a 64-Bit Essbase on a 32-Bit Box? I don't think this is suggested option to go for. But does it really supports?
    Need your imputs on this.

  • Install new Dialog Instance on 64-bit Server with 32-bit database

I need to set up a new Application Server for our current ECC 5.0 32-bit Oracle 9.2.0.7 Non Unicode Database.  The new server is x64-bit and will have Windows 2003 64-bit OS.  I am reading SAP notes 785888 and 814834 and need help understanding how exactly to do this.  The database server is 32-bit Windows 2003 and so is all the other application servers.  Do I use the Oracle 9.2.0 client for 32-bit Oracle and do I use the SAP ECC X64 Install Master in setting up the dialog instance or do I use the 32-bit Install master?  Has anyone done this type of setup before?  Thanks.

    Hi,
all basic information is provide in note 785888.
you want to install dialog install on 64bit windows for 32 bit central instance for that you should consider following.
-> file system is accessible from both host  vice a versa for that you can create one use sapinst on 64 bit host with administrator authorization. and create same user on central instance with administrator authorization and same password.
-> perform dialog instance installation using this user  ( i.e sapinst)
-> if you want to use  dialog instance on 64 bit host with 64 bit kernel, install oracle client 10.2 for 64 bit on 64 bit host of windows. for media information check note 949116.
->use  non unicode kernel because central instance use non unicode kernel.
-> most important 64 bit dialog instance required 64 bit kernel, SAPinst installation screen ABAP System > Instance Directories, where you are asked for the "Location of SAP System Executable", you choose "Yes, locate executables on central instance host", before choosing "Next". The executables for the dialog instance are installed to
    <sapglobalhost>\sapmnt\<sapsid>\SYS\exe\<nuc\uc>\NT<AMD64|IA64|I386>*
so when you want to apply kernel patch you have to uncar the kernel package to this location.
-> maintain the kernel patch level same on both host.

  • Advantages of 64 bit Tuxedo over 32 bit Tuxedo

    Hi All,
I want to migrate Tuxedo 9.1 from 32 bit Tuxedo to 64 bit Tuxedo. Please tell what are the advantages of 64 bit Tuxedo over 32 bit Tuxedo.
Our Machines on which Tuxedo and Oracle are installed have 64 bit IBM AIX OS. Oracle is also 64 bit but Tuxedo is 32 bit.
    Thanks in advance.
Edited by: Ravi Ranjan Karn on Feb 17, 2009 8:33 PM

    Dear Todd & Ravi ,
We recently migrated Tuxedo From 32 bit ( 8.0) to 10.0 64 Bit . Regarding Performace we did not notice much improvment .
Rather it took more 4GB Ram to run smoothy ( it was running with 6 GB Ram ) .
We did the upgrade mainly for OS compatability , TSAM and SALT .
    Ravi ,
regarding your thread related with RAC , here is my understanding .
Any how we have to configure in ubb to connect to the instance(s)
As per Oracle - in 10gR2 , its not possible to span global transaction between two instances, it has to be in a Single Instance .( as per them its allowed in 11g , but performance will be impacted which i cannot compromise )
In this case , how we will make use of the 2nd instance of RAC .?
u have a common service let say SRVC1 , which is connecting to one schema-1 of database and part of GT and used by more than one application .say SRVC2 , which is connecting to one schema-2 of database and part of GT and used by more than one application .
in this case how you will , configure tuxedo to use the 2nd instance - which is not possible as per statement 1 .
Conclusion, as per the current architecture of u r Tuxedo , there is no point in introduction Oracle-RAC,
but we can use RAC , by modifying Tuxedo
    1. programmatically , change tuxedo to use the SRVC2 , in case a failure occurs in the call to SRVC1
    2. replicate the SRVC1,SRVC2 and connect to the second Instance , route transactions in to this service from some applications .
    3. simple way .. keep a secondary ubbconf2 file to point the second instance , in case the instace1 fails , load the ubbconf2 and run ( but for this u need to bring down the whole tuxedo!!!! )
this suggestion is totally based on my understanding ... If guys think other way , pls share
    Nadeer.

  • 10g migration from 32 bit linux to 64 bit-synchronizing appsutil

I am currently attempting to migrate my TEST instance from a 32 bit Linux server to a 64 bit Linux server. In a nutshell, I have prepared the new 64 bit Linux host for running the Oracle database. I have also already run adpreclone.pl on source instance apps and db tiers. I am following a number of documents, mostly from Oracle but a few from different blogs.
    In following http://levicorp.com/2010/04/08/migration-oracle-10g-db-from-linux-32bit-to-linux-64bit/
I will list the first 5 steps. I am stuck on step 5.
    The steps are :
    1. Backup source datafile of the database.
    2. Copy the backup datafile to destination server.
    3. Install the Oracle Software in destination server.
    4. Install patchset 10.2.0.4.0 for Linux 64 bit (Patch# 6810189)
    5. Do Cloning database, create control file
The new 64 bit Linux server has the 10g database software only. So, on the target server I looked to run adcfgclone.pl , but I noticed that in the new $ORACLE_HOME there was no appsutil folder. What I did next was copy that directory from the source database server over to the target server. I have been unable to run adcfgclone.pl on target server against the db tier. Fails with:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
         at java.util.Hashtable.put(Unknown Source)
         at oracle.apps.ad.clone.util.CloneCleanser.doMigrate(CloneCleanser.java:98)
         at oracle.apps.ad.context.CloneContext.doClone(CloneContext.java:710)
         at oracle.apps.ad.context.CloneContext.main(CloneContext.java:5093)
    RC-50004: Error occurred in CloneContext:
So I can't help but wonder, was even supposed to do that - copy from one server to another? Is the appsutil directory and its contents somewhat custom relative to the host it's on?

Please post the details of the application release, database version and OS.
Are you migrating the database only?
If this is an EBS database then the supported ways are using export/import of transportable tablespaces.

How do you get the 32bit client to communicate with the 64bit Oracle instance on the same windows box? After installing the 64 bit db and client (on a developer desktop), I installed the 32 bit client to a different oracle home. I could not get it to connect to the listener - what am I doing wrong? Should I reinstall it to the 64bit home - I'm afraid that'll kill everything though.
Also, I think I'm correct in this, but not sure: any 32bit app must use the 32bit client on the 64bit box. MS Access needs 32bit ODBC, which needs 32bit client, etc.
