32-bits applications in OS X Lion 64-bits mode

Hi guys,
I know that when you boot, you can hold "3" and "2" keys to start Lion in 32-bits mode. But is there a way to run a 32-bits application (let's say Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection) in a 64-bits environment ?
The reason I'm asking this is that a lot of our users (I work in an IT HelpDesk) are not "tech savy" and the "3" "2" options is not easy for them ... So if they could boot Lion normaly, but be able to run a 32-bits application in a "closed environment" it would be easier for them.
What I'm looking for, is something that works like "Run in Windows 95 environment" uneder Windows XP and more, but for a 32-bits environment.
Thanks for your help !

32-bit applications will run jsut fine. The problems will happen if these programs require 32-bit kernel extensions, which will not load on a 64-bit kernel. For programs that have both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries, you can get information on them in the Finder (select them and press Command-I) and you should have an option to open them in 32-bit mode.

  • Do not upgrade to an IvyBridge processor if you need to boot into 32-bit mode with Lion

I recently upgraded to a MBP running the Ivybridge processor and tried to boot into 32-bit mode.  Although it did boot after a short period (3-5 mins) it totally crashed a locked up.  This was precursored by a graphics error and then the mouse cursor could be moved but nothing else could be done and it was only solved by a hard shut down (holding down the power button).  Previously I had been running a MBP with the Sandybridge architecture and this booted fine into 32-bit mode and worked without a problem.
I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple care who said they'd not had any reports of this issue and we went right though my system until they said there was nothing else they could do and I should try a re-install of Lion.  I did this onto another hard-drive, booted into it and managed to get the machine to crash again... leading me to understand that it's nothing to do with my setup.
Thinking it might be an issue with my firmware on the mac today I visited an Apple store and tried booting 5 MacBook Pro's and a MacBook Air - all running IvyBridge - into 32-bit mode and managed to cause the same crash on all of them.  If the machine is just booted an left with finder it didn't seem to want to crash but when I opened programs, mainly mac mail, it didn't take too much longer for the crash to occur.
If there are any Apple engineer reading this could you try and reproduce the issue and look at fixing this please as a lot of people still use 32-bit and if I'd known that the IvyBridge processors weren't going to work in 32-bit mode I would have stayed with the Sandybridge MBPs.
    Many Thanks,
    Adam Peters,

That is a pain then.  Pretty much all of the OS included applications (finder, Mail, iTunes, Safari,...) are all fully 64-bit programs now (since Lion) so I can see where launching them when booted into 32-bit mode could cause stability issues.
If you boot into 32-bit mode and just run the Tascam software without launching anything else, will it work?
Was it alright in 10.6? And if so, how about keeping 10.6 in a virtual machine or on a separate disc or partition?

Thank you for your response, Chris. But I'm afraid I have to disagree. There are native 64 bit versions of iTunes available for OSX and Windows.
In a 64 Bit Windows environment native 64 Bit Applications install the DLL's in a directory called "Program Files" and a directory called "Program Files (x86)" (32 Bit applications only use the ladder).
iTunes 9 is consistent with this behavior - and it identified itself to the system as a 64 bit application (meaning it's process appears without a "*32" tag on it).

  • Can I run Lion in 32 bit mode?

    My question is the title.
I have searched on internet & it tells me to hold down '3' & '2' keys at lauch. But this doesn't work. So is there a way to boot in 32 bit mode or not?
    Thanks.

The reason I want to run in 32 bit mode is so that I can run antivirus scans. I know people will say there are no viruses that attack Mac, but there was a new virus in the press that attacks Mac which is called Flashback.c. I just want to be safe than sorry.
If I can't run in 32 bit mode, then can anyone suggest a free 64 bit AV?
Highlight the application icon and select File > GetInfo
There should be a checkbox that allows you to configure the app to run in 32-bit mode while everything else will continue to run in 64-bit mode..

  • Can Safari run in 32-bit mode on Lion?

I have a Safari plugin that needs to run in 32-bit mode.  This worked in Snow Leopard with Safari 5.1.  I am unable to find out how you would put Safari into 32-bit mode on Lion.  My suspicion is that this is not possible but I do not know for sure.  Can someone shed some light on this?
    Thank you.

Answering my own question, yes it can.  The 32-bit mode wasn't showing up before but now it is.

  • Open in 32-bit mode finder flag doesn't always work on all applications

When I set "open in 32-bit mode" flag in Finder (get info window) for Quartz Composer it is respected on normal application launching but if I restart (with updates, ex.) the computer it launches it in "normal" 64-bit mode. (Normal application launching would be clicking the icon)
This doesn't happen with other applications (at least with one other; non Apple) which have the same flag setted, on the same circunstance.
This non Apple application that works as expected already had the flag setted on installation (it didn't require manual setting, I mean).
    Thanks,

This is a known problem with Netflix and Microsoft Silverlight right now. You can try the following:
See if there is an update for Microsoft Silverlight.
After checking for updates, Go to Finder, then Applications. Right click on Firefox, then click "Get Info". Then check the box that says "open in 32-bit mode". Restart your PC, and test again. Does it work now?

You should probably post your question on the Parallels forums:  http://forums.parallels.com

I run Watchguard mobile VPN to connect to my work network, but the only way it runs is in 32 bit mode, I am not having luck getting Lion to boot in 32 bit mode, what should I do?

Lion runs in 64bit mode. I don't think you can force it to run to 32bit mode.
You can try but quite frankly I've not seen anyone done this before
Restart your machine while pressing 3 and 2 to force it to run in 32bit mode(this was a practice in Snow Leopard)
if you ask me, my recommendation is to get Watchguard update its software to 64bit. this is the REAL solid solution for your problem. Apple does not adjust to 3rd party softwares, its the other way around.
I meant "Lion runs in 64bit mode"

Other users should note that Firefox has public release versions of 64bit only for Mac And Linux; not for Windows, yet.

Sorry, you're not talking to Apple here only other users like yourself.
Someone might be able to help if you post which e-book reader you are using?

Can't boot Mac Os 10.7 (Lion) to 64-bit mode anymore, after booting to 32-bit.

I was able to resolve the problem by installing Flash Player 11.7.700.169 from the direct download installer:

  • Desktop Prefs crashing under Lion - only in 64 bit mode...

All other preferences OK - but desktop prefs crashes when in standard 64 bit mode.
Changing to 32-bit mode - all works fine. Tried all the obvious stuff in other posts:
    Removing iphoto library
    remove desktop prefs plist
    removing folders with custom images
    tried different new users
    rebooting in safe mode...
I've exhausted my knowledge....anyone seen this or  even better fixed it????

Thanks for that - tried it to no avail....tried recovery but that installs a fresh copy of lion....which then works...but when I've time machined my data back - it's back to not working....it's an odd one - now can i be bothered to rebuild, restore selective stuff just to get my desktop prefs working in 64 bit mode.....????

  • If I update to Mountain Lion will I be able to load in 32 bit mode in order to run CiscoVPN?

I understand I should be able to use the native VPN client to connect to my work but as I already have my VPN set up and working well with the Cisco client I was hoping I would be able to just hold 3 and 2 when booting to load in 32 bit mode. Does anyone know if this is still possible.

    No.

  • I need to open FireFox 12.0 (on Mac Lion) in 32-bit mode. That option to restart in 32-bit doesn't exist under "Get Info" or anywhere. Your help please, Thanks!

The option to start in 32-bit mode is available in Safari. But Firefox 12.0 doesn't seem to even have it. Is it possible to upload an earlier version of Firefox? I need to be able to do this, the inability is actually interfering with work that I do to earn my living, so time is of the essence. Thanks for any help/guidance the community can offer.

Thank you, but that option doesn't seem to exist. I have attached a screen shot of the Get Info window, and I have been unable to locate the "Restart in 32-bit" option on it. It used to be right above the "locked" checkbox.
