32 GB ram for final cut pro (and Afetr Effects)? Is it worth?

Hello,
and now it's the RAM time...
I have to decide how much ram to buy, I work with Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop and, I hope, soon with Cinema 4D; this is the probabily Mac Pro configuration:
- Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
- Mac Pro RAID card
- 4 SAS internal hard disks 300GB 15,000-rpm
I'd like to expand it to 32 GB of ram, has it a sense or is it too much? Can 32GB RAM paradoxicalally slow it down? I heard too much RAM could be a problem...
Thanks a lot,
Stefano Bianchi

Hi
FCP will not take advantage of more that 4 GB: Maximum memory usage in Final Cut Pro is 2.5 GB. Other FCS apps like Motion and Color will thanks you more RAM, but IMHO 32 GB is really too much, what means I cannot state you'll notice the difference.
More RAM will help ypu on working with all your apps open at the same time making the system more responsive, but as I told you I think you can do it with less that 32 GB.
Hope that helps !

But Leopard on an Intel is 64 bit, right? So the article would not apply or has FCP not been updated for a 64 bit memory space?

  • Student Help advice! what is best iMac model for Final Cut Pro and logic pro

    Hi
I am currently looking into getting a iMac, but is toggling to device if I need a 27inch or a 21inch(top model),which will be used for Final Cut Pro and logic
There is a lot of money being invested iMac, and I really not want to be stu k with a computer that not going to keep up with the amount of work load in the future.
The specs that I have on mine are..
    21inch
    Upgrades include
    Sdd drive 512gb
    Intel core i7
    16gb of ram
    Or
    27 inch
    Upgrades
    Fusion drive or sdd 250gb
    Intel core i7
    (Possible graphic card) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5 [+ £105.60]
(Ram is way to expensive so will buy from second party)
Anyone who has brought a iMac for final cut or logic what would you likely buy?..Am really stuck on the hard drives between the 27inch fusion and 512gb on the 21inch
    My budget is £1900
My fear is that the 21inch top model's graphic card may not be good enough for advance editing on Final Cut Pro In the future when I start to get more deep into editing..logic really only needs 8gb to run smoothly..buts its the final cut specs that am having problems deciding. I know iMacs are not future proof or technology lasts for that matter, but I do expect to have it run good for a number of years before I upgrade again.
If anyone can give me some advice, or even tell me about there set up they have for media work please let me know.

All kinds of things affect system & HD performance, I can't tell you why your 4 year old Mac is slow.  Just because your old Mac is slow doesn't mean that a new iMac will be equally slow.
You are correct about the issue with the smaller fusion drives.  It's one of the reasons I am not high on recommending them.  Everyone thinks they want power & performance but don't understand the gap between marketing and real life performance.  The 1TB fusion drive however should give you a good combination of rapid access and sizeable storage capacity.
I have used external FW800 / 7200rpm drives for years and have never had a problem with any of them.  I consider them very reliable but admittedly I DO NOT use consumer drives like the WD MyBook that the big-box stores sell.   For the most part I assemble my own with OWC Mercury Elite enclosures.  In the past few years I have centered on WD Caviar Black and WD Scorpio Black drives.  I also have some Seagate Barracuda 7200.xx drives.  They all perform excellently and reliably.
Pls. refer to my earlier post for what i recommended to you.

  • Formatting a La Cie Rugged 1TB Esatadisk for Final Cut Pro and partitions?

I have a brand new La Cie Rugged Xl 1TB hardisk and a La Cie Sata II Esata 34 Expresscardadapter.
1.) How to format the drive to work best with Final Cut Pro and Prores HQ?
2.) How many partitions is best for this 1TB disk?
3.) Which tool to use for formatting and partitioning?

Disk Utility's Repair Permissions only works on drives where all of the following circumstances apply:
•The drive has a Mac OS X operating system installed.
•The files to have their permissions repaired were placed there by the *Apple Installer* application.
•A .pkg file or .bom folder was placed in the Library/Receipts directory by the Apple Installer application, containing permissions information pertaining to the file on the drive.
Repair Permissions does not work on secondary drives or on files created by the user on any drive -including, but not limited to documents, video, photos and music.
To avoid permissions issues on the drives that you will be using for video, do the following:
•Right click the drive's icon on the Desktop or in the Finder's sidebar and choose *Get Info*.
•Go to the bottom of the Get Info window and click the triangle next to *Sharing and Permissions* to open that section.
•Click the lock and authenticate with an Administrator User name and password.
•Activate the checkbox for *Ignore ownership on this volume*.
Do not partition media drives, as already mentioned. There is absolutely no need to format a drive using anything other than Apple's Disk Utility application. You do not need to use LaCie's proprietary software to format a drive.

  • WHAT IS THE BEST VIDEO CARD FOR FINAL CUT PRO and MOTION?

    Hello folks,
I have found a lot of posts regarding all kinds of troubles with ATI READEON X1900 video card.
When I talked to people from Apple, trying to decide which videocard to install in new MAC PRO, Ati Radeon X1900 was the one they did recommand for FCP and Motion. So are there any other cards which would actually suite better for Final Cut Studio2, or is Ati Radeon X1900 really the one to go with?
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Kootenay

Techreport has some more information on the new 55nm Radeon (X3000) which should be another "mid November" releases, as well as an updated 8800 GT that still is under wraps.
So seems Intel and everyone else is trying to get new products out before the end of the year, if possible.
Drivers for graphics controllers may or may not need the work that sometimes seems to plague companies.

  • Best Graphics backgrounds for final cut pro and g-5's

I am not sure if this is the best place to post this but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what are some of the best graphics to use with final cut pro that work real well with a dual g5, this would be like quicktimes for backgrounds. I have had alot of people tell me after effects but then I am looking more for software that you dont have to build, I have been looking at Digital Juice and was wondering how well that works with final cut pro, are there any other High Quality graphics already put together, thanks for your help and if this is not posted in the right spot let me know where would be the place to post something like this. thanks

  • USB or Firewire for Final Cut Pro and or Premiere Pro

I have a macbook, and i need to do a crap load of final cut/ premiere rendering, and i need to get a external for the capture scratch and ect.
But what i want to know is, what one to use? USB or Firewire 400,
I was originally gonna get a LaCie Rugged, cuass its buss powered and extremely portable, but my friends told me, seeing ive got only one firewire port, im gonna have to get something like the 320gb o5 500gb LaCie, which has two firewires on the hard drive, although its not that portable.
So i asked, why cant i get a USB external, that was a dumb thing to ask. They gave me reasons like USB speed isn't constant, not secure stuff like that.
So what should i do, and which is the best one to get?
    Cheers

    Don't know about PPro.
For FCP, you really should have FW. The problem you'll run into, is that the Mac Book only has 1 FW bus. It doesn't matter how many ports the computer or external have, they will all run on the same FW bus. And I don't believe the MacBook has the capability of using an Express34 card (or any other FW expandability). I could be wrong, but don't think so.
One solution is to capture directly to your internal harddrive, then copy the files over to the external FW drive. Others have posted about daisy-chaining your camera/deck through the external FW drive, but I've not done that and can't tell you how.
Even capturing to the internal may not work, depending on what format you're capturing.
Hang around for other possible solutions and search this forum for 'capturing to Mac Book' or some such language.
    K
and yes, USB delivers content in packets vs. a continuous stream using FW. FW is the way to go. You might have success with USB, but you'll be lucky. Try to get FW 800 if you can.

  • Importing and exporting between Final Cut Pro and After Effects

    Hi,
I'm exporting PAL widescreen footage from FCP to AE, adding some fx, and then exporting back to FCP. I am rendering both ways as a QT with no compression. For some reason, the footage is coming back to FCP a little more blurry than the original footage. Can anyone please suggest how to keep the image quality the same as the original?
    Thanks!

    Sure, anytime.
But we've been seeing some posts about problems going between the workspaces. These color and contrast issues may or may not be related to changing color spaces from Animation to your PAL format or they may have some other cause.

Now, when the one hour long movie is ready the video seem to paus every 5 sec (only for half a second). It does it all the way through the movies.
What is wrong? All the sudden.

    We need info, info, info!
    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

  • Why is there no disc for Final Cut Pro X, is there one coming, and how do I transfer the program to a new machine from the download?  Thanks!

Why is there no disc for Final Cut Pro X?
    Is there one coming?
Can and how do I move the downloaded application from my old machine to a new computer?

You purchase FCX in the Mac App Store, there is no disc. You can reload past purchases under your account within the app store. You should also be regularly backing up your system

  • Which firewire interface for Final Cut Pro on MacPro?

I currently own a Presonus Firepod, and it seems to work pretty well, but may sell this when I upgrade from a MacMini to a MacPro. I use my Mac for Logic Pro currently.
I anticipate running Final Cut Pro in the near future, so I'm wondering about the ability to read/generate SMPTE time code that the MOTU traveller supplies?
There will be no external mixer, so this interface will connect directly to speakers & headphones. (would be nice to be able to mute speakers and control headphone mix using just the firewire interface).
I don't anticipate needing more than 2 Mic inputs - and my current mike is a Rode NT1. (As the NT1 is not a top-of-the-line mic, unsure if I should place a lot of emphasis on worrying about the pre-ams?)
I would like decent mic preamps, and ability to graphically monitor input and output levels (is this graphic monitoring necessary, or is just the single overload indicator sufficient?).
Which interfaces in $600-$1500 range would work best with Final Cut Pro - and Logic Pro?

I saw the Traveller ads in Videography mentioning
time code, so I presumed it had an advantage over
    other interfaces.
I found this in some ad copy:
"""The Travler provides on-board SMPTE time code synchronization features that allow you to slave your Traveler system to SMPTE time code without a synchronizer. The Traveler provides a DSP-driven phase-lock engine with sophisticated filtering that provides fast lockup times and sub-frame accuracy. The included MOTU SMPTE Console software provides a complete set of tools to generate SMPTE for striping, regenerating or slaving other devices to the computer."""
So it likely uses an audio port for timecode I/O. However, unless you have external equipment that you want to slave to Logic Pro, (or have Logic slave to) e.g. a timecode DAT, then this really is not necessary. FCP would not see the Travaller as a "controllable" device.
For Final Cut Pro use, I'd probably shoot in HDV.
When shooting a green screen near my computer (or
maybe even on-site), I wondered if there would be an
advantage to recording the audio thru an interface
    like the traveller.
The advantage is that you could capture additional mics and audio tracks with your mac while the cameras shoot. Just slate your takes and sync up later.
Do I actually need an interface that provides time
code, or is that only needed for movie work?
I have SMPTE I/O on my Unitor8, directly accessable in Logic Pro. In 8 years I've probably used it twice to capture audio from some modular digital multitracks. So, unless you have some specific need.....
Maybe it is simpler just to connect to the mic
    directly to the camera's input?
Indeed. You should always have camera audio available. Anything else is supplemental. Alternatively, you could use the Travaller or RME, etc. as a "live to camera" mixer in a studio situation. Plug your mics into the interface, create a submix and send it to the camera while simultaneously capturing each mic to an individual track in Logic Pro. There are many possibilities.

  • MacBook Pro 13" or MacBook Air 13" for Final Cut Pro?

I am looking at buying either a MacBook Pro 13 inch with 8Gb of RAM, 750 GB, and a 2.8 Ghz i7 Processor or a MacBook Air 13 inch with the 4gb of RAM and a 1.8 Ghz i7 processor. Which is better for Final Cut Pro X? I would rather have the Air, but if the Pro is better (which is what I currently have) that's what I will get.

Is it a very noticable difference? Will I REALLY notice it? I know that the Pros are more powerful but I just wanted to factor in the SSD in the Air.

Even though it says 4 GB RAM recommended, I think most experience users woild say 8 GB and up is the real minimum.
    Can't answer the Avid question.

  • Change for final cut pro HD from Pinnacle Studio 10

    Hello,
After lots of problems with Pinnacle Studio 10 (windoooooows.....) I finally chose to change for final cut pro HD on Mac OS 10.3.9
So far so good, I did lots of tutorials to learn but there is one very remarkable thing I really miss. Maybe there is just a thing in my configuration to fix...
Is it possible to view a part of a movie without randering it after every simple change? It must be technically possible because studio does it for years now, even with overlays.
Because I just upgraded my ibook with lots of RAM just to try out final cut for the moment, everything runs fine but rendering does take a few minutes/hours.... Well it is ok just to try out maybe I would get a macbook pro if final cut would assure me.
    I feel like cutting blind!
Studio renders right before exporting, this may take a few hours but I would do this during night...
As I said, maybe its all my fault and I just have to change some configurations....
    thanks for help
    Fabi

Make sure your RT settings (upper left menu in the timeline) is set to UNLIMITED RT. This means that the render settings will be adjusted to play back at the best resolution they can without rendering. You might get a green render bar or orange render bar. If you get a red render bar, that means that you have a filter or two that isn't RT and requires a render, or you have too many layers to allow for RT playback.
If you simply drop a raw clip into the timeline and have to render, that means something is wrong. Your clip settings and sequence settings don't match. You need to choose an Easy Setup that matches your footage, then create a new sequence.

  • Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?

    Hello:
Just today, I was working on a Mac system that does not have any of the applications that I would have expected to need to have installed in order to do more than just decompress movie files compressed with Apple ProRes 422.
I was expecting to have to install Final Cut Studio 3, Final Cut Pro X, Compressor 4, and/or QuickTime 7 with the QuickTime Pro key; however, none of those applications are installed and I am able to create custom QuickTime Apple Pro Res422 Sequences in Premiere Pro as well as export using Apple ProRes 422.  After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder also show all the Apple ProRes variations.
Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?  Is it something happening on the OS or QuickTime level that would affect CC or CS6 in the same way?
I've done a web search, but haven't really come up with anything other than older articles about needing to have FCP installed (and I typically work on systems with Final Cut Studio 3 installed as well as CS6, CC, or CC 2014).  If more detailed information is available, it would be great to be able to read up on it.
The system is a 21.5-inch iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.5, QuickTime Player 10.2, and Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 (8.0.0 - I know an update is available for PrPro, but it's not my system to make that change).
    Thanks in advance,
    Warren Heaton

    Hi Emil:
I use ProRes all the time as well, but I have Final Cut Studio on my workstations.
I had not come across MindPower009's YouTube video.  That explains how ProRes could be showing up without FCP or Compressor.
So, the answer to my question would be, "No, CC 2014 does not eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422; however, if you are willing to be in violation Apple's terms of use, you can install the ProRes codecs anyway."
Even though MindPower009's YouTube video comments claim "FREE and LEGAL", it's clear from both the Apple download page and the ProRes codecs installer that Apple expects you to own at least one of their applications.
    Thanks again for the link!
