32GB "null" file in User folder- what is it?

I decided to see what was using the majority of my disk to free some space, and found this. Can it be deleted?

That file belongs in the system /bin folder. If you have a copy of it in your home folder, you can delete it, at least as far as the system is concerned. Don't delete the original or anything else in /bin.

  • 'log' file in user folder

I just opened my "User" folder in the finder and noticed there is a random file in there named 'log'.
When i open it in textedit, there is just one line of text: "cp_plugin_dir:/Users/Mitchell/Library/Internet Plug-Ins"
What is this file and is it safe to delete?
    Thanks

I don't know what caused it but it only a (misplaced) log file so you can safely delete it.  Of course whatever caused it (a poorly written internet plugin installer?) may create it again so the mystery of the cause remains.  Keep an eye out for it and maybe you can associate some action you do with its reappearance.

  • Spotlight won't find files in user folder

i have spoken to apple tech support on this and they continue to try to find a solution but.....
i have files that spotlight doesn't find. they are in my user folder. in fact, it won't find the folder (s) one is on my desktop, one in documents. (these are just the ones i've tested). when i take the folder and just put it on the hard drive (root level), spotlight finds it. also, apparently, it can be found when i put it in the user folder of another user. i would like to avoid reinstalling the system. any thoughts??

  • Cannot find config.js file in user folder

    Dear All,
I could not find config.js in user java script folder.
I used  app.getPath("user", "javascript"); function to find the user folder and it contains glob.js and glob.settings.js file.
Where should i find Config.js file to execute priviledged methods in a non-privilaged context.
    Thanks for all.
    Mohamed Idris

Thanks a lot, That has worked. I was thinking that config.js will come with default setup loaded with setup information.

  • Library File in User Folder Invisible?

Is there a way to change this folder to being visible? I turned off invisible files, and it showed up, then made an alias for it so I can still access with invisible files turned on, but is there a way to change the default of this folder to being visible? I'm running Lion btw.

It helps to deter users who don't know what they are doing from poking around where they should not be.
I'm curious about something. Was my reply inferior to Sjazbec's? I ask because you awarded him a Correct Answer while mine was only Helpful. But they are both the same, essentially, except that mine requires less typing and you don't even need to know your username.

  • Cannot Upgrade to 9860 With the Users Folder Redirected to Another Drive

I tried doing the update to 9860 and received an error message that I could not run the Windows Technical Preview because my "Program Files or Users folder has been redirected to another partition". This is indeed the case (my Users folder
was redirected to my other hard drive to save space on the SSD during setup), but if Windows is running fine, why is this not a valid configuration?
I've seen a complicated method to solve this issue and will do that to get the upgrades unless this can be addressed in the updater :)

    Hi Fumarin,
This  is not the new issue in current build. Actually, Microsoft has gave the reminder before:
Caution Using the ProgramData setting to redirect folders to a drive other than the system volume will block your ability to upgrade to future versions of Windows.
By changing the default location of the user profile directories or program data folders to a volume other than the system volume, you cannot service your Windows installation. Any updates, fixes, or service packs cannot be applied to the installation.
We recommend that you do not change the location of the user profile directories or program data folders.
See this article in Windows 8.1:
You encounter an error when trying to install Windows 8.1 due to redirecting the Users or Program Files folder to another partition

With my taking any action, my folders and files no longer appear under documents (under Places). Now a folder titled Documents has appeared on my desktop with all my files and folders. What happened? What happened?

The way I moved from 10.3.9 to 10.5.8 was to use "ditto -rsrc" and copy the user homes and the data share to an external firewire drive. Then did the same in reverse.
I found the key to data and share permissions to make sure that the users had the same UID in Leopard that they had in Panther.
You can then use "sudo rm -rf" to remove any folder from the relocated homes that you want. Remember if you do choose to remove "~/Library" from each users relocated home, you will be removing any iCal calendars, login.keychains, browser bookmarks, custom screensavers and wallpapers, etc.
Users don't really care if they can login and do any work. But there will be much wailing, gnashing of the teeth, and anxiety, if they lose their bookmarks and wallpaper.

  • Blank files appearing in User Folder???

    Hello,
I'm not quite sure what to call it, but my "user folder" contains Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, etc. in Finder. It's the folder that is my name.
Anyway, I've noted that there are a bunch of random blank files that have appeared in this folder, such as:
    }%FB%F500
    1%BC[
    9$%92%E2%8F%F9prS}{r%92
    YZh2%D6
It says there are all plain text, and zero KB.
Does anyone know what these are and why they have appeared? Will it mess anything up if I just delete them?
    Thanks!

I remember having things like that pop up when using some open source app.
I can't recall which one it was, but something to do with time management or mind mapping.
I guess (at least in my case) it was probably sloppy programming leaving behind empty temp files.
    I'd just trash them.

  • What's the deal with the Applications folder within the User folder?

In my user folder (the one with my name) there's another Applications folder filled with .cab files that are all dated, and some have "Audio" or "ACT" or some weird naming in the middle. Some examples of what they're called are: Nov2008_XACT_x64.cab ; Oct2005_xinput_x64.cab ; OCT2006_d3dx9_31_x64.cab ; Nov2008_XAudio_x64.cab
    1) What are .cab files?
    2) Why are they there, did an external program add them or something?
    3) Can I delete them?
Thanks for your help, it's always been bugging me having this folder filled with files that (seemingly) do nothing.

    Paul --
    They're files from Word.
    If it were my Mac, I'd trash them. Here's what I found on them similar to what WZZZ found for you;
    Opening the CAB
You will download a file whose name consists entirely of a number and which has the extension .cab.  A .cab is a Microsoft “cabinet” file: essentially it’s a Zipped folder structure with the ability to store longer file names.
Depending on your version of Mac OS, the built-in Zip utility may not be able to open it, but  there are programs that can.  If you are on a Power PC-version Mac (A G3 or a G4 or a G5...) then Stuffit Expander will do the trick.  If you have an Intel-processor Mac, Stuffit has a bug that may prevent it.  Only one way to find out...
If your browser is correctly set up, it will leave the file in your Downloads folder with a subfolder above it containing the unpacked content.
If you can’t find it, start Stuffit and drag the .cab onto it.
Stuffit will either issue an error message, or it will leave a folder containing the template in the same folder as the .cab file.  If you get an "Error 17540" from Stuffit, that means "Can't understand the format" and the extracted template file will not be useable.

  • User folder corrupted, went to restore, user folder files not there

I tried to upgrade to 10.5.4 in our iMac and my drive went out to lunch for some reason. We tried to work through that in another forum. I finally had to scrub the drive and install from DvD. Then I went to restore from Time Machine. It seemed to go well, but when finished, all I can see of the user folder is the shared folder. Where is my data? I had the original folder encrypted with FileVault. Could that cause the file to be hidden? I have 10 years of information in that file...

I tried several different approaches. I tried the restore from backup and could tell from the space used that the file was there somewhere, but couldn't find or open it. Finally, I loaded the OS from the installation disk and asked for a restore from backup and selected everthing but the system file. Everything came back. I did have to try several times to remember the encryption key for FileVault to get the file to open. I downloaded the 10.5.4 combo update, and this time things went fine. I don't know what happened earlier. One other unusual thing that happened in the process was I plugged in a firewire drive. The iMac wouldn't recognize it and everything suddenly flashed off like a breaker tripped (though the power strip never lost power). The iMac rebooted OK, but I'm wondering if a power supply is going south or something. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. It looks like I have joy again! Thank God for Time Machine!

  • A 56 gb .dmg file in my deleted user folder

I have a G5 tower running os 10.3 with 150GB of space. I am running out of room on my had drive because I have a file named melindabeck.dmg (my name) in my deleted users file that is 56 GB.
    1. What is this file?
    2. Can I get rid of it without endangering my user folder (admin)?
    3. How do I delete it?
    Thanks, Melinda

Melinda.. it looks like you created a new user account and then deleted the old user account...if everything is ok with the user account you are using...you can delete the old account (drag it to the Trash) ......which is located at....
    HD/Users/Deleted (Folder)
Did you do perform similar procedure such as this....
    Accounts<Deleting User .... using System Preferences (p29)
    • You must be booted up in your Admin account before attempting this.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106256
IMPORTANT: If the user's account is encrypted (FileVault is turned on), turn FileVault off for the user before you delete the account.
    • You can not delete your Admin Account using this method.
    1. Choose System Preferences from Apple Menu and click "Accounts"
    2. Select the user account you want to delete and click the minus button in the lower pane
    3. A window will pop up asking you if you're sure this is what you want to do. It also gives you a choice as to what should be done
    4. If you click "Delete Immediately", the user account will removed.
    5. If you click "OK", the account will be removed, and a disk image will be created of the contents of the deleted user account. In case you want to
    re-instate the user,The path is:..... HD/Users/Deleted (folder)
    6. Your last option is "Cancel" , if you change you mind.

  • Should the admin/user folder and all of its sub folders be moved to the hdd or just parts of it? (eg. picture, movies, documents)  What is the best way to go about doing this.  Also should a 2t hdd be partitioned.

iMac with 256ssd and 2t hdd. Should the admin/user folder and all of its sub folders be moved to the hdd or just parts of it? (eg. picture, movies, documents)  What is the best way to go about doing this.  Also should a 2t hdd be partitioned.

Yes, you can move your user directories to the HD and keep your OSX and Applications on the SSD drive.
Whether you partition your HD or not depends on how much data you have and how you propose to use your HD.
Are you planning to use your iMac as a Time Machine backup volume? If so, partition it off.
Do you have huge data files, eg video, music, photos?
How much of your 2tb drive will be "free" once it is loaded with all your data?
A little more information is required before the optimal configuration can be recommended for your use.

  • Windows Authentication login cannot access backup files stored in Users\[User] folder.

I am currently logged in to my database engine using SSMS and Windows Authentication; specifically, I am logged in with Joe-PC\Joe, where Joe-PC is the domain name of the machine hosting the database, and Joe is the user that created the database.
If it matters, I am running all of this locally from Joe-PC.
I have a .bak backup file stored in my C:\Users\Joe\Desktop folder that I am trying to restore.  However, I get an error saying 'Either the location does not exist, or the current login account does not have access to it.'  I am certain the location
exists, as I am looking at it right now, and I can't see why Joe-PC\Joe wouldn't have access to it's own user folder.
I am absolutely baffled as to why this is behaving this way.  I am fully aware that I can work around the issue, but I'd like to know why this isn't working as it seems like it should.  Does the Windows Authentication that SQL Server uses not have
the permissions that the account would normally have?  Is the Windows Authentication user even the same thing as the user that logs into Windows?  What else could be going on that I don't understand?

    Keith
Thanks for your answer.  My user account is one of two administrator accounts on this computer (the other is only set up for consistency sake, and has probably only been logged into a total of 5 times; all of our computers have the account though, so
I thought I should put it on here as well).  The issue isn't that my account doesn't have restore permissions, just that SSMS can't access the user folder when logged in using Windows Authentication.  Another issue that I assume is related results
in a lack of permissions on backup files until I manually set permissions to 'Everyone' under the backup file's properties\security tab.  Also, not sure if it matters, the backup is taken from a customer's computer running Win 7 Pro x86 while my computer
is on Win 7 Ultimate x64.
Not sure if this helps pinpoint the issue, but my current workaround is as follows:
Copy the .bak file to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.WSA\MSSQL\Backup (default backup folder)
Right-click the .bak file and go to the properties toolbox.  Select the Security Tab, give full permission to 'Everyone'.
In SSMS, select 'Restore Database' after right-clicking on 'Databases' in left-hand tree.
Give the DB a name, restore from device, select my file.
This method hasn't failed me yet, but any deviation (other than setting permissions before or after moving) causes me to get access errors when I try to restore.  Fortunately, this isn't a production database engine, just a testing environment, but
I'd like to get an idea of what's going on, because I know it's only a matter of time before I or a customer runs into this issue.

  • Moving a file or folder in my user folder requires authentication

I am a totally new user to Apple and Mac, so please forgive my "noob-ness."
I have a problem trying to move files from one folder to another in my User folder. Every time I try, I get the following message:
"Modifying 'Users' requires an administrator name and password. To move <filename.ext>, click Authenticate."
The message has an "Authenticate" and a "Cancel" button.
I'm not trying to move to or from any of the system folders, just within the User folder. After doing some research and thinking about it, I may have changed the user name, incorrectly or inadvertently, at some point. I remember changing a name slightly, but I thought it was the computer name, not a user name.
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks.

I meant to post some additional info but was called away.
    1. The only thing I've tried is to verify/repair permissions. I ran the verify, and it listed a slew of differences, but they were mostly all in the Applications directory. I went ahead with the Repair Permissions, but it had not effect.
    2. On the Finder status bar in the lower right, there is an icon that is a pencil with a slash through it. This is on every directory/folder on the hard drive, not just system directories/folders.
    3. I can rename folders and files in the User directory, but I can't move them.
    4. "Get Info" for the User folder (HBC) says the user HBC has Read & Write privilege.
If anyone can help me figure out if I did actually change the username and how to fix it if I did, I would greatly appreciate it. Or, if that's not the problem, help me troubleshoot what is.
    Thanks.
