32GB Touch or 80GB Classic?

Hello, very soon I am buying an iMac and my local apple store have made me a deal that I can have $250 AUD off the iPod classic/touch in the form of extended warranty of the iMac. I don't really have the money to spare on the iPod but since this is a one time offer I am going to take it and sell my old 5gen iPod to cover most of the difference. The thing is, I really don't know what to get. I have a relatively large library - 15gigs of music, 3 of podcasts, 10 of TV shows and 400mbs of movies, so all up: 28gbs. I know that will fit on a touch - just. But, I don't need most of the videos on it, only really some of the TV shows. It is mainly for music, but I also like the touch and have WIFI at home so it is useful to me. Basically, whats better? I will pay the extra if it really is worth it, but I don't want to. But it has to be the 32GB touch because otherwise the 16'll be full on first sync - just with music. Also, if you think it is worth it for me, i would consider the 160gig classic. Please advice. One last thing, the classics ive used are all really laggy when in coverflow, is the touch the same?

Hi--
Partly it depends on how you listen to music, and how much you want spend to manage it. For example, I just put my iPod in "shuffle" and let it surprise me. I very rarely go looking for a specific song. So I can set mine up with three playlists:
1. Songs I want synced every time so they're always on the iPod. About 3GB.
2. Songs I most recently imported or purchased. Limited to 5GB.
3. Songs from my library that aren't included in the other two playlists, and haven't been played in the last 45 days or so. Limited to 5GB.
With that amount of storage, I could listen to music for about thirty 24 hour days, or ninety 8 hour days. But, of course, I sync it more often as I buy new music, or add older CDs to it. I don't watch TV shows or movies on mine, so I don't have to worry about that. But even if I did, I think I could get by easily with half the music on it.
Since my work computer is my MacBook Pro, and my iTunes library is on that computer, the truth is that I could sync it every day if I wanted to. I don't though. Once a week or so is often enough for me...
I think the coverflow on the iPod is pretty smooth. It's not as good as on a laptop or desktop computer, but it's not too bad. I actually don't use it that much since it doesn't change when the song changes, but that's personal preference.
But, if you want every song in our collection available on your iPod at all times, then, yeah, even the 32GB one will be a tight fit for you.

  • 80GB Classic touch wheel non-responsive

Just got the 80GB classic, and am liking the new interface but the touch wheel is having some issues. The scrolling action only moves 20-30 lines at a time and then pauses, making it tedious to scroll through artists/albums. Anyone else having this problem? My old 3rd gen ipod would (and still does) scroll as fast as I can move my finger around the wheel.
Have tried the reset suggested in the Apple KB article but no luck there. Any other suggestions?

General opinion seems to be that the Classic wheel has a different response from earlier models. The Classic models won't work with skins that cover the scroll wheel for example and it's easier to lose access to fast scroll if you stray away from the optimum line. Since this is the first iPod I've owned myself (children have 5th gen) it seems to work OK although a fast scroll in Cover Flow would be useful.

  • 80GB Classic will no longer sync with Outlook

I have a 80GB Classic that will no longer sync my Outlook contacts or calender. It will sync everything else, music, movies, games, but than it just hangs. It will say that it is syncing and not to disconnect, but it will stay that way for hours and not do anything. I also have a 64GB touch that sync with the same library and the touch sync just fine. Does anybody have any ideals or suggestions?
    Thanks!

Found out that my iPod was hanging on the photos not Outlook. Deleted the iPod Cashe and problem is sloved.

  • Rentals and 80gb classic

Anyone having issues transfering rentals to 80gb classic? Already updated to latest software version 1.2.3.

The fact that you say you're using the "lastest software version 1.2.3" would seem to indicate that you have an 80gig 5th gen iPod with video, not a Classic. See here for further help identifying your iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688
The 5th gen iPods don't support rental movies, only the purchased ones. Sorry.
And, by the way, you posted in the Touch forum...

  • 80gb classic crashes computer, get blue screen.

    80gb classic
    Windows Vista
Ipod crashes computer when itunes is running, get blue screen.
A while back my ipod started having trouble playing songs. I would tell it to play a playlist of say 50 songs, it would then freeze for about 30 minutes, and when it would finally start playing, it would be 30 songs into the playlist. I also couldn't get itunes to read it.
So I used itunes restore feature, and then after that, every time it tries to synch to itunes, it would crash the computer, and I would get the blue screen saying that my computer was dumping physical memory. Well nothing gets dumped from my computer when it does it, and the ipod stays the same.
I even tried formatting it manually, having windows fix it, having itunes restore it again, but always the same thing... once it was restored.. BAM computer crashes.
I can have it plugged in no problems, I can run itunes no problem, but when the two are done at the same time, it would crash my computer.
So I looked for other reasons. I needed major updates for vista, so I downloaded all of them, which took a while. And I even uninstalled itunes and re-downloaded and installed. Now what happens is Itunes freezes when it's plugged in, but I can still use all my other windows, just itunes is inoperable while the ipod is plugged in. As soon as it is unplugged, itunes starts working fine again.
I'm not that great with this sort of tech thing, so any suggestions would really be appreciated.

    many thanks, i!
atapi.sys is a Windows OS file ... it's your Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller. So it's plausible that it's either got damaged, or we're looking at a driver issue that is manifesting as trouble with atapi.sys. So we'll proceed on those two fronts to begin with.
Just in case the file is damaged, I think we should try an sfc /scannow. It's not user-friendly on an XP system, but the following document may be of some help (fingers crossed):
    http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
If no joy with the scannow, we'll try making sure your drivers and so forth are up to date. If you've got a name brand PC, head to the manufacturer's website and look for the downloads page for your model. Look for newer versions of firmware for your hard drive, BIOS updates and chipset driver updates (in particular), but now might be a good time to check on things like video drivers, RAID controllers and so forth.
If you've got third-party componentry installed in the PC (like for example, a USB card, or an external drive, or a new internal hard drive), or if you have a home/custom-built PC, head to the websites of the manufacturer's components (in particular the motherboard manufacturer), and check for newer drivers, firmware and BIOS versions there. The following document may be of some assistance with that:
Updating the drivers on your Windows PC
Any joy with any of those measures?

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • New TED video podcasts not compatible with 80GB classic?

Up until recently, I've been loading TED podcasts (video) on my 80GB Classic with no problems. For the last 3-4, however, I'm being told that these most recent ones can't sync because they are not compatible with my ipod. For some reason they can't be viewed. Is anyone having this same problem? Is there a fix?
I have the most current version of iTunes, and I tried the Advanced tools.
    Thanks.

Did the problem start just after updating to i-tunes V9?
Classic owners are having lots of problems since updating. Check out the threads for i-pod classics to see what I mean.

  • Windows logo testing to verify compatibility with 80GB Classic Problem

    Hi All,
I purchased my son a 80GB Classic for christmas and it has been great. Then out of the blue when he hooked it up to his computer two weeks ago to purchase new music the computer would not recognize it. I have tried the five R's as recommended and updated all his programs as suggested. Any advice would be Greatly appreciated. This is the message we get when we plug the ipod into the usb " The software you are installing for hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP." Thank you!

Since I'm on a Mac, I can't offer a whole lot of help. I did find this article on the Microsoft website which may be helpful.

  • 80GB Classic Randomly Restarting & Then Freezing

I've only had my new 80GB Classic for a day and already things have gone wrong. I got all my content on there, no problems but now when I use my iPod it plays music and works fine but it randomly "dies" and goes to the apple screen then after a minute or so it goes to the menu but it freezes on the menu. I then have to restart it toggeling the hold button and holding the menu & middle buttons.
I haven't noticed a pattern or anything that makes this happen, it's happened whilst playing music, playing games even just changing the settings.
Anybody else having this problem, or can offer some advice. Thanks.

Yep, that's happening with my 160 Gb Classic, too. Sometimes it doesn't even go to the Apple screen, it just goes totally blank.
    I want my 5G back.

  • 80GB Classic gone black while updating firmware

Hopefully someone can help, while upgrading my 80GB Classic, the iPod completely stopped functioning. iTunes will not recognize the iPod and it will not turn on at all. I have tried and tried to reset it but to no avail.
Is there a fix or do I have to bring it in to Apple?

This same thing happened to my iPod Classic after the most recent firmware upgrade. Took it to the Apple Store, and was told that the updates were causing the iPods' battery to drain completely.
Apple Store plugged the iPod into a wall charger for about 30 minutes, and it came back, and has been fine since. They told me that plugging the iPod in to a USB port does not provide enough current to bring the iPod back to life, and that they only way to correct it was to plug it into the wall charger (not provided with iPod, of course).

  • 32GB Touch Crashes After 3.1.3 Software Update

I've had a 32GB touch for almost a year and it has been a solid performer until the latest v3.1.3 Software update. Since the update I get the "white screen of death" and silver-white Apple logo whenever I use Safari or the YouTube app.
I've always installed all suggested Apple updates thru iTunes and never had any issues until now.
I'm a noob here and I did try the forum search for this topic but couldn't find anything. I can't be the only one experiencing this so maybe I searched wrong?
Thanks in advance for assistance on how to get my device stable again.

I'm having the same problem. It worked for a few weeks and then I tried to reboot my 32GB Touch 2G and it has been doing the White Apple Logo ever since. I've tried to restore 3 times. The first time got the closest using the DFU restore setting. It restored/synced for about 36 hours before getting a time out error. My other tries haven't worked either. It doesn't seem to be charging when plugged into my iMac for some reason (at least the display says low battery). I'd be content to completely wipe the ipod and start over, but I don't know how to do that either. How long does it take to boot up after a restore anyway? I left it plugged into my computer for 12 hours last time waiting for the logo to go away after the restore was finished (iTunes didn't leave any error messages or info for me).
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • 80gb Classic iPod is dying on me (Not Starting, Not Recognised...etc)

    Hi
I have an 80gb classic iPod and I am having major trouble with it.
It started with the iPod showing the Apple logo screen for a long time then a multilingual message saying I need to "Restore using iTunes" I have no problem with restoring, yet once I connect it to my Macbook Pro it is not recognised, not even in Disk Utility nor the USB list (from System Profiler). Now it doesn't even show the "Restore Using iTunes" message and just gets frozen on the Apple logo.
It does however charge, I attempted the whole resetting thing but to no avail.
Interestingly, the iPod automatically switches to 'Disk Mode' when I keep it connected to the computer, with the blinking "Do Not Disconnect" in old school screen. So I hurry to check with Disk Utility, NOTHING.
So basically nor iTunes or the computer recognise it, and I want to restore it but it's being non responsive and I could seriously use some help trying something on my own before the trip to the shiny Apple Dealer here.
    Thanks in Advance.

Well, here are a few other suggestions:
try a different cable - one of the pins on your cable may be damaged
try connecting to a different computer
try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer
try connecting it through a powered USB hub
If none of these work, the only other suggestion would be to bring it (or send it) somewhere for diagnosis and repair. There are a few sites here in the States that offer this service, and I'm sure there is something available in the UK as well. They tend to be less expensive than asking Apple to service an iPod.
I am not a Mac person (Windows for me), so I cannot give you any tips on attacking the problem from that side of things.

  • Movie will sync to 32gb touch and not to 8gb touch

I have converted several movies to play on my 32gb touch. Recently I purchased 2 additional 8 gb units for my children and have found that some movies will not sync to their 8 gb iPods. Does anybody know the reason for this? I have looked at the spec pages and the movies in question seem to fit within those parameters.
One example... Kind: MPEG-4 video file Size: 482.6 MB Encoded with: lavf52.34.0 Total Bit Rate: 734 kbps Video Dimensions: 462x320 Video Codec: h.264
As far as I can tell, all units are current with software updates from Apple.
    Any help would be appreciated.

On the iPod and iPad tap Settings > Store
Make sure Apps is switched on under Automatic Downloads.

  • Can't update firmware on *80GB Classic

I was prompted to install firmware update 1.1.1 for my 80GB Classic but I keep getting the message that the request has been timed out. On the downloads section of Itunes the estimated download time is showing as up to 3 hours, depsite me being on a fast broadband connection. Previous updates have gone fine.Purchases from Music Store go fine.
I have tried reinstalling Itunes and resetting Ipod but to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas? I am on Windows XP Home.

No you don't need to update the firmware.. but if you have forgotten the password you need to reset the TC.. it will then become available to the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Soft Reset to get around passwords.
To actually get around the password all you need to do is press the reset button for between 1-4sec seconds.. do not exceed that..
The passwords will then disappear for 5min reverting to default.. ie nothing on wireless and public for main access.
That allows you time to do the setup. Then try again with your ipad etc.
Otherwise find someone with a pc with windows and use the 5.6 utility on that or use an older Mac OS.. yosemite is hopeless.
