3550 DC and regular 3550 IOS image

Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 DC SMI Switch has IOS 12.2.55-SE6 ED, but
Cisco Catalyst 3550 48 SMI Switch has only up to 12.2.44-SE6 ED.
From what I understand these all 3550 switches are all on the same platform, the only difference is power/interface/POE and software. It seems DC model's newer IOS image works on the non DC models.
I noticed End of Software Maintenance Releases Date for non DC model is in 2007 while DC model is in 2011. Is that the only reason newer IOS images are not available for non DC models?
End of SW Maintenance Releases Date for DC model is July 5, 2011 but the latest IOS image was releated on Aug 1, 2012... Interesting? Why Cisco extends SW maintenance for this particular model?

Notice that 12.2(55)SE was released in 2010 and that the 12.2(55)SE3,4, 5, and 6 maintenance release following that only included bug fixes and no new functionality.
I would guess that there is enough in common with the other Catalyst 3k family switches still under support that share most of that image's code that Cisco has decided to continue releasing the maintenance updates despite having passed the formally communicated end-of-maintenance date. That date has more to do with contractual support and commitment than it does with an absolute date after which no maintenance release will be issued.

  • Bootloader and IOS image into a Catalyst 6509 running hybrid mode

    Hi all,
I have a Catalyst 6509 running CatOS and IOS (hybrid mode)
The chassis is based on a SUP1A and a MSFC2
    The MSFC is using images:
    boot system bootflash:c6msfc2-is-mz.121-2.E
    boot bootldr bootflash:c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-2.E
I would like to know if is possible to add the next command to the MSFC configuration in order to load the new image before erase the old one, even while the chassis boot using the old bootloader image:
    boot system tftp c6msfc2-pk2o3sv-mz.121-26.E2.bin 10.10.5.15
    Thanks.

    Thanks Amit, thanks Ankur,
Yeah! I know about the limits of the bootflash space as the PCMCIA option.
It is a bit complicated to explaint the situation here but I will try.
Neither the actual CatOS or IOS will recognize the new PCMCIA we bought to this upgrade. :P
First, I will upgrade CatOS using rommon and xmodem command in order to execute a new catos release that can view the PCMCIA, then I will format it and I will copy the new catos image and the new ios image there.
Then I will change the catos boot config and I will do a reset.
I must do that because the new release don't enter into the bootflash and the actual CatOS don't support boot from the network :P. It is CatOS 5.5.1 :PPP
After that, I need also to upgrade the MSFC because as I read that the actual IOS won't see the PCMCIA filesystem. In order to do that I would like to prepare the MSFC to boot from a TFTP server and then modify the configuration to boot from sup-slot0: forever :)
Let me know what do you think about this steps.

  • 802.1x, 350AP, 3550 Switch, and ACS 3.0

    Yikes!
Whatta mess I got myself into! Im trying to implement a couple of security features (at the same time) due to higher corporate directives. I am trying to implement Radius, 802.1x port authentication on a Cat 3550 switch, and mac address athuentication for wireless clients. The idea was:
    1. The 3550 has port based authentication on it and should authenticate access points as well as any workstations that will/may connect to it.
    2. The wireless clients will be MAC authenticated via the access point passing requests to the radius server.
    Confused? I am too, help!
    Thanks

    Nilesh, Thanks for the reply.
But I do have a few further questions if you are willing:
    1. Getting the AP to use 802.1x and talk with the radius server seems to be the big problem. I have not been able to find clear enough instructions on how to set the AP to do 802.1x through the switch. I do realize the LEAP is just cisco's implementation of 802.1x but we are trying to use non-proprietary protocols.
    2. We already have the clients MAC addresses in the AP's but want to get away from this (network mgt issues) by using the ACS server.
I guess what makes this confusing for me is the chain of events and if they are possible to do. Here are the steps as I see them, please advise if this is not possible to do.
    1. Access point is plugged into 3550 and uses 802.1x authentication with radius through the switch. Once the switchport is authorized, then the wireless clients can try to associate with AP. To do this the MAC address of the client , is sent to ACS for authorization and when authorized allowed to communicate. Then the wireless client retrieves an IP address through DHCP.
    Whew.

  • How can i upgrade system IOS images of routers, switches and firewalls

    Hi,
I am very much surprised and less of understanding yet how Cisco's licensing program or IOS upgrades are done. I have many routers, switches & ASA's of whom i wan to upgrade the IOS's but i cannot do so. How ever i can download those images from internet but i want to know how can i do this from Cisco as i don't want to trust those IOS's available over internet.
As per my study what i have found that i need to have Cisco Service Contract number for that devices so that i can download updated IOS Images for them.
Someone kindly explain what are the best methods for the above requirements.
    Regards
    @Mohammed

You're correct regarding a service contract. Cisco calls this Smartnet support. It includes both hardware support (i.e. returns for failed hardware), software support (including right to download and upgrade your software) and technical assistance (via the Cisco TAC). Smartnet is charged separately for each covered device. Once you have it, your cisco.com userid needs to be associated with your service contract number. Doing that will then allow you to download the software from cisco.com. (There are some very limited cases in which you don't have to have a support contract - mostly when there is a security advisory (PSIRT) indicating the Cisco software was flawed as it was initially released.)
Every product (or product family) has a product support page on cisco.com. That page includes release notes, configuration guide, users guides, and a link to software downloads for that product. Start by reading the release notes and determining which (if any) upgrade is appropriate for your product. Then you can download and upgrade the software as necessary.

  • Converting APs and IOS images??

Question 1: I just finished converting a large number of AP350s and AP1200s from VxWorks to IOS. I noticed that the 350 APs got firmware version 12.2(13) and the 1200 APs got 12.2(11). Why does the convertion apply two different versions of firmware?
Question 2: Now that all my access points are IOS, I need to go back an upgrade all the 1200 APs again, but now from 12.2(11) to 12.2(13)
The WLSE is supposed to allow you to apply firmware upgrades to a group of APs. However, I haven't been able to find a 12.2(13) "image". The only way to upgrade a 1200 AP to 12.2(13) is by using the "tar" file. If this is the only way to upgrade the APs, then the WLSE in useless as far as firmware upgrades are concerned. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The conversion image for AP350 and AP1200 are NOT the same. If you look at the Release Notes, it clearly says that "Upgrade non-IOS 1200 series access points to Cisco IOS operation by combining the Cisco IOS configuration file with a 1200 series helper image. Converts the access point to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(11)JA1.
Upgrade non-IOS 350 series access points to Cisco IOS operation by combining the Cisco IOS configuration file with a 350 series helper image. Converts the access point to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(13)JA1.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wireless/airo1200/accsspts/ctrn/crn13ja1.htm. So, yes, once you convert the APs to IOS, you'll have to upgrade the 1200s to 12.2(13)JA/JA1 again.
As for the question on the tar file, IOS images for APs are indeed in .tar format only and this is the way it works with/without WLSE. There is no plain .bin file for IOS APs, since these APs also have the html GUI built in to them, hence it is in tar format. Hope this helps.

  • IOS Image too big, need help

    Folks,
I have dual Sup 720's that just came in from cisco. They have CATOS on them 8.4.(5). They have the base 524MB of DRAM and 64MB of flash(bootflash), no external flash card.
My question is that i want to download Natice IOS onto this switch (122.18SXE4). When i see the requirements it tells me that i need 128MB of flash, but when i download the file it is only 35 MB big.
Ca i run this image on my SUP with out upgrading the flash?
I will make sure that i grade this post.

If the image size is less than 64MB, then booting from bootflash is OK. Beginning with Sup720 12.2(18)SXE and later versions, most Native IOS images exceed the 64MB capacity of all internal partitions, including the sup-bootflash: or MSFC3 bootflash:
partitions, so for 12.2(18)SXE and later an external flash device of at least 128MB is required with Cisco part number MEM-C6K-CPTFL128M=. For multiple concurrent image support in this boot device, the external 256MB CompactFlash Cisco part number of MEM-C6K-CPTFL256M= is required to use as the external boot device.
Some feature sets of versions > 12.2(18)SXE result in a smaller file, but as long as it is less than 64MB, there is no problem with loading it onto onboard flash.

  • LMS 4.2 possibility to md5 checksum all ios images in repository?

    Hi,
Recently we upgraded a switch with an image from the repository in LMS. After the installation of the image it seemed corrupt.
My question now is : Can we do a MD5 checksum on all the images in the local repository to verify that all images are ok to use?
    Kind regards
    Steven

    Hi,
I know this is a really old thread but I have a question regarding the MD5 checks.
I am using a freshly installed Prime LMS 4.2.5 and I would like to know is the LMS is checking the file checksum of the IOS copied to a router/switch to make sure it's integrity is good? Or it is still not implemented? I am asking this because I see the SNMP OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.10.1.1.4.2.1.1.3 (ciscoFlashFileChecksum) in the traffic between LMS and the devices but I don't see any evidence in LMS job about this integrity check (neither in the telnet session commands).
[Update I] Just to inform you - if you ran into the same problem:
I opened an SR with Cisco to ask them about this and a nice engineer made a thorough investigation and the result is: during a deployment job LMS 4.2.5 does MD5 verification on the image copied on the device (but from another SR I know that the Prime Infrastructure 2.2 does not do MD5 verification on the image copied on the device, only when importing the image to the repository).
[Update II] Bug for this PI problem: PI (Version 2.2 and above), while distributing image into device, validates successful image copy by validating a copy prompt from the device - so only checking the size of the image, not the MD5 hash.. https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCut63077

  • How do you backup a Cisco 2950 IOS image?

I cant find anywhere on Cisco's website on how to do this or anywhere else for that matter.

    Hector,
The copy tftp method is the most commonly used method to copy files from flash to a TFTP server or vice versa. But if you have CMS (cluster management suite) instlled on your flash, there will be an associated html folder and many other files that are extracted in flash. To upload these files, along with the IOS image, you will need to use the following command.
    archive upload-sw tftp:///IOS-CMS2950.tar
This will compress all the files (IOS and CMS files) together in a tar (compressed) format and upload it to the TFTP server specified by
Copying each of the above files individually will consume a lot of time.

  • HT201302 How to importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to my computer with Windows 8?

myHow to importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to  computer with Windows 8?
Nothing indicating iPhone 4s folder for images and videos in Win 8 anymore after plugged in USB cable to PC with the iPhone 4s. Nothing pop up anymore asking if I want to backup photos  / videos to my PC (used to pop up in Win 7).
Where can I find this folder in iPhone 4s?
    Thks!!

You can do it via your computer's iTunes. If you are on iTunes 11 on your computer then you may want to re-enable the left-hand sidebar via View > Show Sidebar (option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), which might make it easier to navigate and my instructions may make more sense.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes (if you've enabled the sidebar), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If you haven't enabled the sidebar, then from your library click 'iPad' at the top right of the screen and you should get a series of buttons along the top of the screen, including one for Photos

  • Recovering from "no cisco IOS image file" error

I have a aironet1200 series access point, and attempted to update it to a newer IOS software release. However it never came back up after the update, and upon reboot the 3 status lights show red, green, red, which apparently means there is 'no cisco IOS image file'. Is there a way to recover from this error? It has a RJ45 style console port, can I use thi to recover?

Got it sorted, managed to find the manual which goes through this in it's entirety!

    Using the CLI
Follow the steps below to reload the wireless device image using the CLI. When the wireless device
begins to boot, you interrupt the boot process and use boot loader commands to load an image from a
TFTP server to replace the image in the wireless device.
Note Your wireless device configuration is not changed when using the CLI to reload the image file.
Step 1 Open the CLI using a Telnet session or a connection to the wireless device console port.
Step 2 Reboot the wireless device by removing power and reapplying power.
Step 3 Let the wireless device boot until it begins to inflate the image. When you see these lines on the CLI,
    press Esc:
    Loading "flash:/c350-k9w7-mx.v122_13_ja.20031010/c350-k9w7-mx.v122_13_ja.20031010"
Step 4 When the ap: command prompt appears, enter the set command to assign an IP address, subnet mask,
and default gateway to the wireless device.
Note You must use upper-case characters when you enter the IP-ADDR, NETMASK, and
DEFAULT_ROUTER options with the set command.
Your entries might look like this example:
    ap: set IP_ADDR 192.168.133.160
    ap: set NETMASK 255.255.255.0
    ap: set DEFAULT_ROUTER 192.168.133.1

Step 6 Enter the tar command to load and inflate the new image from your TFTP server. The command must include this information:
? the -xtract option, which inflates the image when it is loaded
? the IP address of your TFTP server
? the directory on the TFTP server that contains the image
? the name of the image
? the destination for the image (the wireless device Flash)
Your entry might look like this example:
    ap: tar -xtract tftp://192.168.130.222/images/c350-k9w7-tar.122-13.JA1.tar flash:

Note If you do not press the spacebar to continue, the process eventually times out and the wireless
    device stops inflating the image.
Step 8 : power cycle the ap.
Step 8 Enter the set BOOT command to designate the new image as the image that the wireless device uses
when it reboots. The wireless device creates a directory for the image that has the same name as the
image, and you must include the directory in the command. Your entry might look like this example:
    ap: set BOOT flash:/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1
Step 9 Enter the set command to check your bootloader entries.
    ap: set
    BOOT=flash:/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1

  • C3750X which IOS image?

    Hello,
this week, I received a pair of C3750X-48T-S switches. While checking for the best IOS Image, I found many bug reports and reports of instable devices with IOS 15.0.2. The most stable and bug free IOS apparently is the 12.2.55 one.
However, the 12.2.55 train will be end of life soon:
