-36 Error accessing Time Capsule drive
I have file sharing enabled on my Time Capsule disk, but when I try to mount it (connect to server), I get the following error:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in afp://timecapsuledisk could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
This happens on all three of my computers, even though Time Machine claims to be backing two of them up successfully to that same Time Capsule disk (indeed the Time Capsule backup will mount on the desktop, but not the entire Time Capsule disk).
Presumably I need to run Disk Utility to repair the Time Capsule disk, but I don't see any way to do that within Disk Utility or Airport Utility.
I had the same issue, and found a solution at: http://www.foreverwarm.com/using-time-capsule-with-a-windows-pc/#
The lack of adequate documentation from apple on this makes it unduly difficult...
Good luck!

How to access Time Capsule drives behind DSL Router over WAN
Hello everyone,
I have an older Time capsule(with USB Drive) connected to my Hitron CGN3 DSL wireless router over ethernet.
I have turned off the wireless functionality of the TC since the router seems to be much faster on Speedtest.net.
I have my TC and attached USB drive setup to share over WAN but am getting a Double NAT error.
It doesn't seem like I can turn off NAT on my Router.
I can't run the TC in bridge mode because it will remove the Share over WAN option for the TC and Drive.
Is it possible to setup the TC and attached USB drive to the router, without wireless on, so that I can access the TC and drive over the internet?
Any help would be soooooo apreciated!!!
Thanks!
IanDoes anyone know why my Time Capsule drive sharing needs to be set to disk password?
You can set the TC disks to user accounts.. at least you can on older TC with older airport utility.. but there are consequences which you discovered.
If you set accounts.. you will have major issue with the existing files.. they will all disappear.
The old v5 utility gives you this warning.. which somehow Apple forgot on new version.
It actually makes all the present files disappear for all users. The warning just doesn't go far enough. You do this on a blank TC.. and of course the USB drive is just the same.. you cannot use different settings on that to the TC internal drive. So offload all your files.. create accounts on a bare TC.. load the files back into the correct user profiles.
In the end you probably want more flexibility than a TC is designed for.. buy something designed for remote access.. WD MyCloud.. it is hugely superior.
Also. . . I am trying some File manager apps for my iPhone in hopes that i can connect to the same drive with it. So far no luck with the free versions of FileBrowser Lite or File Explorer Free.
Most are SMB based.. not AFP.. Apple offer only two protocols.. SMB and AFP. But no responsible ISP allows SMB over the internet. The flood of files from hacked windows machines would bring the internet to a grinding halt.
People do get around it.. you can use filebrowser for instance by opening SMB to the outside world on a non-standard port.
See http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
But this is incredibly risky.. there is very poor security and it is not a great idea. The AFP security is much better than SMB.
If you want security use something other than TC.. any real NAS that offers VPN access for instance. The cost of a WD MyCloud is very reasonable when you look at the flexibility of the design. But any decent NAS will offer real remote access.. not Apple's limited pretend version. -
Finder crashes trying to access Time Capsule drive
Hi.
I have just set up a Time Capsule 2TB. Time Machine also seems to be working fine - it's backing up right now. However, in Finder, if I click on the new Time Capsule drive that has just been added, Finder crashes. This happens every time I click it.
This creates a crash report. This is it - it's long... Anybody have any input on this..?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not able to access the files stored on my time capsule. I've made sure that I to allow file sharing on both my machine and the time capsule. I have tried to reset the time capsule to the factory settings as well.
I have received some messages that the internal disk is in need of repair, but after resetting the settings, the problem is resolved.
Thank you for your help. There are a couple of approaches here.
Click in an open area of the desktop so the Finder menus appear at the top of your screen. Select Finder, then Preferences. Click the General Tab. Under the heading of "show these items on the desktop", make sure there is a check mark next to "Connected Servers"
Now, open your hard drive and look for the SHARED heading. Does your Time Capsule icon appear there? Click to select it and then double click the Time Capsule folder to display the contents.
The second method is to select the (apple-K) line from the Go menu.
Try entering the following address without the quotation marks "afp://10.0.1.1" and try to connect. Unless you have changed the IP address of your Time Capsule, it should connect and the TC icon will appear on the desktop. -
I cant access time capsule hard drive.
I cant access time capsule hard drive. Everything was working before but all of a sudden i get an error msg when double clicking on my network drive which states ' The local device name is already in use'. The time capsule wireless network works fine though. I am using Vista 64.
Reboot the entire network.. everything must go off.. all stuff off.
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. TC (maybe also working as router).. other network stuff.. clients.
Can vista now open the disk?
If not try doing it manually.. in windows explorer type the TC address \\10.0.1.1 for instance.. whatever IP it has. I just used default as example.
If no good, open the airport utility which I hope you have installed.
Make sure the TC name is short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Make sure workgroup is correct and guest access is on with read and write permissions.
If still no good.. press and hold the reset.. redo the setup.
Later TC firmware is useless for windows users.. the best was 7.5.2 which you should go back to.
Do you have other clients using the TC? Are they all ok?
vista.. shudder.. has one virtue.. it made me give up windows and move to Mac OS. -
Accessing Time Capsule shared drive from Vista
When running Vista in Bootcamp on my late 2008 Macbook Pro, I can see the shared network drive on the Time Capsule, but when I try to access it it just freezes Windows Explorer and I have to forcibly terminate the explorer process. Is there a trick to get it to work? I'd like to use Norton Ghost to backup Vista on the Time Capsule drive.
Thanks.I have a 1TB TC currently working as my router for a Macbook, Vaio and Dell laptops. I can only access the files from the Macbook. I tried installing Bonjour on the Vaio, but still cannot access the saved files...maybe the install was not good? Any ideas? I tried the online Bonjour download...I do not have the disc.

Time capsule drive and external drive won't wake up
I have a time capsule purchased in August (2TB) and a 2 TB WD MyBook external drive plugged into the usb slot on the time capsule. Given my computer is a laptop, it is nice to be able to put the external drive somewhere where it doesn't have to be plugged and unplugged with laptop use. The WD external drive houses my itunes library and is pretty sensitive and loses data whenever not powered down cleanly.
The problem:
Time Capsule drive and WD drive seem to go away and not allow me to access them no matter what I try. The only way to get them responding is to pull the power plug on the time capsule and power back on. This needs to occur each time I want to access either drive. When attempting to connect via finder I get connection failed errors.
I have no connectivity problems with airport. Access to network is fine, so I know the TC is not totally dead, just the part that lets me access the hard drives. It is interesting that time machine appears to be able to access the drive on the tc without problem but I'm not sure how confident I am that this is true just because it is telling me so.
Any suggestions? anyone else seeing this?I am having this issue as well.
The behavior seems to be that the drives are available after a reboot and for some time afterwards. Then at some indeterminate time, the drives become unavailable. The Time Machine backups stop with a "Backup Delayed" message and I have to go to the Time Capsule and reboot it by removing the power and re-inserting it.
When the drives are unavailable, the wireless router functions are still active since I use this router as my gateway to the internet. -
Error message: "Time Capsule cannot be found"
I tried accessing my Time Capsule drive from Finder. The TC shows up in the Finder window as a shared drive. However, when I try to open TC, I get an error message that says: "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for Time Capsule cannot be found." The wireless router is working and it shows that I am connected. As I was typing this, a scheduled backup was supposed to begin but the desktop icon that shows the backup in process that pops up when I'm backing up is not appearing.
I am having similar problem. My error: "Connection Failed: There was an error connecting to the server "NAME HERE.local". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator".

Use time capsule drive for mass storage instead of time machine
I'm considering buying a new Airport Extreme with the time capsule drive. I'd interested to know if I can use the built in drive as an additional HD verses using it for a back up drive with time machine? I'm aware I can plug in a USB external drive for network storage, but would like to use the built one for storage as well. Anyone know if this is possible?
I just got a 2TB time capsule a few days ago to use as a "poor man's file server" for my iTunes library. Bob makes valid points, and I am aware of the limitations, but I think it will meet my needs for awhile. I am in the process of ripping a large DVD collection and my iTunes library is over 350gb which was starting to feel crowded on my MBA's 512gb SSD.
I have plenty of external USB and thunderbolt drives, but I wanted wireless access to the libary anywhere in the house. With the AC wireless on my 2013 MBA, I wouldn't really classify the time capsule as "quite slow", I'm seeing about 30MB/s for FInder file copies. I have a 1TB USB2 WD Passport drive and the speed is very comparable - about 35MB/s. Sure, it's not as fast as my thunderbolt drive at 190MB/s or SSD at 700MB/s, but it seems to work well for my content (I don't use HD video in iTunes).
The only noticeable issue is that the TC disk spins down almost immediately if it isn't in use, so you get a lag of a few seconds if you pause a movie for a minute. And it takes longer to start iTunes of course. For me, these were acceptable trade-offs to allow my library to grow to 2TB without any directly connected external storage.
I wanted an AC router regardless and the TC gives me a wireless disk for $100 more. In the future I can always add a "real" media server and let the TC do backups. But for now I'm happy with the way it works. -
Problems accessing Time Capsule on windows Vista
I have an iMac running Leopard and a laptop running Vista Home Edition. I'm having some problems accessing Time Capsule from the Vista machine. everytime I click to access the drive, a message appears in the menu bar of the window that says (not responding). I've tried leaving it. I've even changed my entire wireless network to bypass the original g router (belkin) to use TC, so I now have TC as my router, Belkin just setup as a wired broadband modem but I still get the same problem. The mac seems fine, although I have had quite a few issues with drop outs.
both machines have the latest version of Airport Utility and Bonjour.
The laptop is a recent purchase to replace a dead XP machine, this worked fine and I managed to get stuff backed up just before it died, thankgod.
Any help appreciated. No problem seeing Time Capsule with iMac, Dell desktop XP Home, Dell notebook XP Pro, and Fusion with XP Pro. All installed according to the installation guide. Installed AirPort Utility on all machines and updated firmware to 7.3.1. To see the other machines, make sure file sharing is on. Firewall on the PCs may need to be turned off. The printer plugged into the USB port also worked with all the XP systems and the iMac with a few missing features on iMac (I am assuming different driver issues). BTW, logging onto the created network and accessing the Time Capsule HD are separate. If you've entered different passwords for the HD and wireless networking when setting up Time Capsule initially (which I did through the iMac first), you'll need to enter them separately with the XP machines. You could also try resetting Time Capsule. Seems to work for others.

Best way to access Time Capsule from the Internet?
I wanted to see if anyone knew of a program or setting I can use in order to access Time Capsule from the internet? I know that probably I will not be able to at this point access it directly, even though it is connected to the internet through my modem, but I do have a Mac at home that is connected to Time Capsule. Isn't their a way that I could connect to the Mac, but not through Back to My Mac, that would show Time Capsule as connected to it, so that way I could access the files? Any ideas would be appreciated.
It is possible to mount the TC as a network hard drive when outside your regular network.
1) You will need to reconfigure your router to forward the ports used for AFP (by default 548) to the Time Capsule.
2) Then when outside the network make sure Finder is active, press Apple+K to bring up the 'Connect To Server' dialog.
3) Input the WAN IP address of the network to which the TC resides on.
4) You will be asked for the password used to access TC.
5) The TC should appear as a mounted drive.
It is then possible to access files on the TC as well as do a TM backup. To make life easier you can drag the mounted TC into your dock for easier access in the future.
However, it is obviously recommended to use a strong password to protect the TC (configurable using Airport Utility in the 'Disks/File Sharing' tab). You may also need to use a service like DynDNS if your network does not use a static IP address.
But I am using my home networks' Time Capsule successfully from the office. -
WiFi bandwidth required to access Time Capsule hard disk
Hey all,
Recently I moved, switched, houses. In this new house I have put my Time Capsule in the living room, and my computer is in the bedroom.
Ever since I did that, I had troubles accessing Time Capsule hard drive. It would often get disconnected, Time Machine could not "find backup disk", streaming video was not working, and more.
At first I thought that in the move I managed to bump TC a bit too hard and that maybe hard drive itself was damaged. Then I moved my MBP to kitchen, to do some work there (kitchen overlooks living room, there is a direct visual link to TC from there, no walls in between).
Taaa-daaaa! Connection to Time Capsule and the hard drive inside was perfect again.
However, all of the WiFi signal indicators, on both my Mac and other iOS devices are full when I am in my bedroom. The signal is therefore strong enough to make these devices think there is a 5/5 signal quality. But obviously that is wrong signaling. Not even Air Port utiliy gave any clues that even tho WiFi signal was 5/5 the actual bandwidth was not even close sufficient for optimal access to Time Capsule's hard disk. Which is just silly.
Dear Apple, would it be possible to implement some sort of speed check into Air Port Utility which actually checks _REAL_ state of bandwidth and then advises what to do; "Please move closer to the Time Capsule Basestation, bandwidth is too low to access".
I will say it again; the WiFi indicators are all 5/5, and everything regarding regular internet access and similar works awesome. But connection to hard disk obviously requires epic signal strength and no software indicates that.If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
Open Macintosh HD
Look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder named Data (unless you have renamed it) will appear to the right
Double click Data to mount the drive on the Mac's desktop
Open the drive on the desktop and you can drag/drop files over to the destination that you choose on the Mac.
Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive. -
Mounting Time Capsule drive - total newbie question
I'm a total Mac newbiew, so please bear with me.
There are alot of threads in this forum that talk about 'manually mounting' a time capsule drive. What is this manual mounting, what's the point of doing it, and how do you do it?
My Time Capsule shows up under the Shared menu in Finder and I can access it from there. Is access to the disk via this link slower than mounting it or something?
Lastly, my TC is connected to my Mac Mini via an ethernet cable. How can I check that the Mac is talking to the TC disk via this connection rather than over the wireless network that the TC is providing?By "mounting" people are meaning seeing the Time Machine disk icon actually showing on the desktop. I can only think of 2 reasons for this, 1) time saving if people use the disk for other purposes as well as Time Machine and need to access it regularly, and 2) If it mounts, it proves you have connectivity.
Doing it from the finder sidebar is effectively the same thing, only you are doing it instead of getting the system to do it. Your initial access to the drive may be noticeably slower for a couple of seconds until it mounts is all, nothing worth worrying about
See here for more info if you are interested in mounting it automatically:

As for your last question, unless your wireless and wired connection talk to different networks, then turn off your wireless and used the wired connection. -
Accessing Time Capsule From Any Internet Connection
Could you please tell me if it will be possible to access Time Capsule from any internet. I would like to put all my files on the device and be able to access these while out on the road.
Thanks in advance for your help
Cheers SteveYes, you certainly can (right now) remotely access the hard drive attached to your AEBSn. I will refer you to "Step 4" in Apple's article Sharing a USB hard disk on your network for instructions on enabling this feature. To access the disk remotely (and don't test this from a computer on your own LAN) select "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and enter the public IP address of your Base Station.
I have to admit the specs for Time Capsule don't explicitly indicate that Time Capsule will support this feature. However, given this feature is available on the AEBSn and is easy to implement, I would be very surprised if Apple took away this feature when they designed Time Capsule. -
Time Capsule drive has corrupted banded Time Machine file(s)
So my internal HD died a few days ago. I get a new HD and I go to recover my files using Time Machine from my Time Capsule drive, and it hangs on every attempt. Something with the Time Capsule drive itself is busted.
The sparsebundle file is 220gb in size and contains 28,000 banded files. Trying to copy it off of the Time Capsule results in a consistent hang. I went into the sparsebundle and copied off every individual banded file except one, and any attempt to copy that file from the drive will hang the Capsule and force me to reboot it.
Apparently Time Machine will not work if just one of these banded files is broken or out of place. Despite the fact that I recovered nearly all the data, it is currently unusable. I need some serious help.
My hope is there is some workaround I can do to get at least most of my data back. It is unacceptable that Apple would sell Time Capsule and advertise it as being a way to safely back up data, then have it corrupt my data 4 months after I bought it. This data is of course priceless to me, and its worth far more than the drive, my macs, or pretty much all the Apple hardware I've bought in my lifetime. So I really need an experienced person from Apple to help me out and figure out how I can recover my data.
Thanks to anyone who can do this.
RichardSo after alot of time, disk utility reports that the corrupt sparsebundle has no errors via verify and repairing it does nothing. It still won't mount and the same problems that were happening before continue to happen.
I'm trying another way now. Since the internal drive was suffering from classic stiction (I think), I went and got an external case for it, put it in there, and started to whack on it. Not exactly elegant but its been known to work. After some beatings the drive did come back to life, and I'm right now attempting to copy my data from it. So far so good.
The Time Capsule, and Time Machine for that matter, have proven worthless when I needed them. If this copy is successful, the TC is going back and I doubt I'll get another. This situation has been entirely unacceptable. I bought it only 4 months ago, and already the TC hardware/software corrupted my data. This is no kind of backup system, its pretty awful, and Apple really should not be advertising this device as a safe way to back up your data.
