  • Problem with paintComponent, and CPU usage

    Hi,
I had the weirdest problem when one of my JDialogs would open. Inside the JDialog, I have a JPanel, with this paintComponent method:
    public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
    super.paintComponent(g);
    Color old = g.getColor();
    g.setColor(Color.BLACK);
    g.drawString("TEXT", 150, 15);
    g.setColor(old);
    parent.repaint();
now when this method is called, the CPU usage would be at about 99%. If i took out the line:
    parent.repaint();
the CPU usage would drop to normal. parent is just a reference to the Jdialog that this panel lies in.
Anyone have any ideas on why this occurs?
    Thanks!

    1) I never got a stack overflow, and i have had this in my code for quite sometime...If you called paint() or paintComponent(), I'm betting that you would see a stack overflow. The way I understand it, since you are calling repaint(), all you are doing is notifying the repaint manager that the component needs to be repainted at the next available time, not calling a paint method directly. good article on how painting is done : http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/painting/index.html#mgr
    2) If this is the case, and the two keep asking eachother to paint over and over, .....

  • Xorg + xf86-video-intel lags with compiz / high cpu usage without it

I have recently noticed that my X server lags. It happens approximately once per second (it's fairly regular) and it can be easily observed when watching movies, dragging windows or rotating cube. Screen just hangs for some milliseconds. Lags are bigger and happens more often when many windows are opened.
Even worse things happen when I'm _not_ running compiz. X's cpu usage spikes permanently up to 30-40% and lags are even more noticable.
    My hardware:
    Laptop with Intel GMA 950
    Configuration
I tried some different xorg.confs but it seems to be irrevelant. It happens even on plain conf created by 'Xorg -configure'
    xorg-server 1.5.3-3
    mesa 7.2-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1
    kernel26 2.6.27.8-1
I also tried downgrading these packages to
    xorg-server 1.4.2-2
    mesa 7.0.3-3
    xf86-video-intel 2.3.2-1
    kernel26 2.6.27-1
and it seems to resolve cpu usage problem but not the lags.
Does anybody know what might cause these lags? It's really annoying.

It turned out that color depth was the issue. I think that 24bit is too big for my graphics card and compiz (although I remember that i810+24bit+compiz worked fine).
So changing DefaultDepth in xorg.conf to 16 fixed the problem. Is there any other way to workaround this without decreasing color depth?

  • My T400 with its 100% CPU Usage

hi, i have problem with my T400 approximately for 10 days. Windows xp was installed and it has been heating very much, about 80 degree and higher. i think of virus possibility andI formatted and install Windows 7. However, problem werent solved, it was heating again. And, i install a clean windows xp now but its cpu usage at !00% rate always even if there is nothing works hard. screen shots of tsk manager are at attachment.
what do you suggest? help please....

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook getting how with very little cpu usage

So my macbook pro with retina display is getting oddly hot.
I run a few applications, about 5 or so, and the CPU reached about 95C, then was pulled back by the fans to 80C. I then played 1 game, (and left other aps open), and the CPU reached 101c. I've then closed everything but two aps, an IRC client, and safari with 6 tabs.
    Current CPU usage:
    16 - 19%
    CPU temps:
    Average is 80C
    Fan speed:
    3710 rpm
Program I'm using to record temps:
    Temperature Guage
I've also let the vents on the side of the computer containing the cpu/gfx chip be suspended in air so they aren't onstructed by anything.
Is there something wrong with my MBP? Apple's tests said everything was alright but it's getting VERY hot compared to many stories I've seen across the net.

    ThePilotGuy wrote:
Also, when I restart the comp, should the temps stay the same, even after idling for a minute? They do for me.
Also, restarted my comp, same dock issue persists.
EDIT: Also, when I restart my computer, the background always changes to this grey backgroundless color and I have to re-set it.
And, when I log in, the screen quickly flashes white then takes maybe 5 to 9 secs to login. It hasn't done this until recently.
EDITEDIT: When the background is colorless, the bar at the top of the screen is just black, I cna't read any of the text.
The white flash is normal. That's the end of launchd process and the start of the loginwindow process.
The delay in the appearance of the loginscreen indicates that either
    1. you're running something in
 > System Preferences.. Users & Groups | Login Items
that is causing the problem every time you bootup and login. If either Skype or Limechat are in that list, get them out. Ideally, get everything out of that list.
    or
    2. if there's nothing in your Login Items, you may have a corrupt plist file. Force the system to make a new one by running this command in Terminal (beware that it will reset your Dock to default prefs, so if you've added any other icons to the Dock you'll have to do that again afterwards):
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
press 'return' on the keyboard and restart the mac.

  • Tecra M5: Applications hang with 50 percentage CPU usage

I have recently received a Tecra M5 which is great except now and again processes hang consuming 50 percentage cpu.
I have installed the update to the fingerprint reader and am starting to suspect it is an issue with the NVIDIA graphics driver.
When the process hangs, if I look at the process using process explorer (sysinternals) I see a low memory event being logged. The laptop has 2Gb of memory and only ~1Gb is being used.
What can be done to find out what is causing this hang?

i know many would be shocked to hear what i'm about to say: "most virus checkers r more trouble than they r worth". Not only do they slow down ur system, u can never "catch up" without the constant update (not to mention u have to trust them as well). all the computers i have re-built i just install a good FIREWALL without any virus checkers: turn off any unnecessary services; allow only wanted applications blocking everything else; n advise users not to click on anything they r not expecting. So far i have not heard any of theirs get infected.
Good Firewalls r rarely free nowadays however (i hear that Zonealarms is good enough). u can download an old Sygate version 5.5.2577 at http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=sygate (some users have problems with version 5.6). For non techies, it might b worth paying for a good FIREWALL that includes customer support service.

  • Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3

I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!

    Hi Klaus1
I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
Thanks for your help and input so far!

  • Google Earth Plugin and LabVIEW: High CPU usage when adding placemarks

    Hi,
I posted this question on stackoverflow earlier this week but feel it might be better suited to the LabVIEW community specifically so I'm reposting here:
I'm writing an application which uses the Google Earth Plugin to display events on the globe. Each event is a single point kml placemark with an icon which is a 3kb png file. Placemarks are uploaded to the plugin as they are received by the software. I am experiencing increasing CPU usage with the number of placemarks that are added.
I have tested displaying a new placemark every second and running until the software running the plugin completely froze (graph attached). The GEPlugin (green trace) stopped responding (i.e. the globe did not respond to the mouse) at around 1200 placemarks added and CPU usage was at ~30%. When the software itself (red trace) froze the plugin was using around 50% CPU and ~3700 placemarks had been added). After the freeze, no new placemarks were added which caused the software to respond (but not the plugin) so I could clear all the placemarks. After the placemarks were cleared from the globe, the CPU usage of the plugin returned to around 5% CPU.
So what I've seen is that GEPlugin CPU usage increases linearly with each kml placemark added. Is this the expected behaviour/ a normal limitation of the plugin? If not is there a more efficient way of adding many placemarks to the globe?
I am using GEPlugin version 7.1.1.1580 (API version 1.010) and LabVIEW 12.0f3
Please see the test results attached. Any input greatly appreciated!

    Hello,
I have had a look at your graphs and understood what you are trying to do. To me it seems that as the image gets more complex it gets harde to render which wold likely cause increase in CPU usage resulting in the freeze. I would suggest you try running the program on anoher computer to check on the RAM front of things. If this is a limitation of the GE Plugin then unfortunately I can not do much to help, but if you think this is a problem coming from your LabVIEW code then you can post your code here and I can take a look.

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

  • Excesive CPU usage - java process OBI related

    Hola a todos,
We have installed OBIEE 11.1.1.5 in a virtual machine (a clean one, just DB and OBI) and since a few weeks we've noticed perfomance issues. There is a java.exe process running with 30 - 50% CPU usage and if we stop it, OBIEE stops working as well, so we think it may be related, but we dont have any further clues.
Has anybody dealt with something liket his before or does anyone know if there's a log where we could check this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Tuning
Whether its a 64 bit or 32 bit of SUN or Jrocket ,
Please increase the heap size parameters to Xms & Xmx to atleast2048 (min and max to atleast) 2GB
Below were the comments from Oracle Support
Best Practices Guide for Tuning Oracle® Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition
In JRockit JVM (R28), the heap grows faster than before. The JVM also ensures that the heap size grows up to the maximum Java heap size (-Xmx) before an OutOfMemory error is thrown. In addition, the default value of the -Xmx option is changed from 1 GB to 3 GB on 64-bit OS. Note the JRockit JVM auto shrinks the heap if it is unused or if other applications require more physical memory.
Note: It is recommended to use the default garbage collection mode i.e. -Xgc:throughput. Also
large heap reduces the garbage collection frequency and fragmentation, improving the throughput
of the application; however, a large heap increases the memory footprint of the Java process.
*Warning: Make sure you have enough physical memory allocated / available on 64bit servers and then use the above settings as a starting point, and after load testing, adjust as needed. For a stable / an even performance over time, you should set the initial heap size (- Xms) to the same value as the maximum heap size (-Xmx).
Common JRockit JVM issues seen with BI (i.e. bi_server1) managed
    servers:
Startup Times Take Longer When Using JRockit JVM Versus Sun JVM: The Oracle® JRockit JVM is by default optimized for server use, which means that the startup times can be longer in favor of high performance as soon as the application is up and running. Moreover, as the application runs, the JRockit JVM optimizes frequently called methods, improving the performance further.
When you run the JRockit JVM on a 64-bit system with a heap size less than 4 GB, if native OutOfMemory errors occurs despite memory being available only then add the parameter -XXcompressedRefs:size=32GB in JVM startup options to enable heap to grow up to 32 GB heap (practical limit of 25 GB). This will fix the issue native OutOfMemory errors. Moreover heap size still be restricted till the limits defined using -Xmx only benefit would be your heap will get the capability to grow beyond 4 GB up to 25 GB due to increase in size of pointer to
    32 bit address.
On Oracle Solaris SPARC, due to the way classblock memory is reserved,Oracle® JRockit (R28) might occasionally run out of memory when a large number of classes are loaded (in the order of 100000).Workaround: The default value of -XX:MaxClassBlockMemory=50 MB, and a reasonable value is around 75 MB.
By design Oracle® JRockit will often use more memory than Sun JVM because JRockit compiles everything and is optimized for being a server-side JVM. So if
your customer have limited resources (i.e. CPU, memory) then it is recommended to experiment with switching to the Sun JVM which should save some system resources, but customer really should consider to do a performance tuning and sizing exercise, and determine if they have sufficient memory / CPU’s to support their requirements.
It is important to keep Oracle® JRockit R28.1.x up to date with latest fix release because the latest release provide fixes for security vulnerabilities, performance,
and other improvements of the Oracle® JRockit R28.1.x
    Tuning 64bit Sun JVM

Minimum permanent generation heap -XX:PermSize=512m Maximum permanent generation heap -XX:MaxPermSize=512m

  • Cameras & CPU usage

I'm suffering with similar high cpu usage issues,as others. But, the camera used makes a huge difference. Using iSight, iChat uses from 30-45%, but using the camera I'd like to use, a Canon Optura, the usage rises immediately to 60-90%.
No other apps are running, no Quicktime or iChat add-ons, and the high usage occurs in video preview mode, so no net issues are involved. As others have reported, it starts lower and climbs up after a few minutes. I'm running 10.5.6.
They both enter the Mac using firewire. Obviously, the difference comes down to a difference in the signals, but can anyone enlighten me further?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    There is also this http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
It allows some VJ type things and can output that Video to several Apps.

  • Mdworker process suddenly high CPU usage

    Hi All
I've been running Mountain Lion since it was released, upgrading from Lion. I've never had a problem with mdworker until a few days ago when suddenly, the mdworker process started hitting 90% CPU on my iMac.
I've disabled Spotlight, deleted the .Spotlight directories, rebooted the iMac, but each time mdworker . Prior to this, the iMac's CPU temperature was around 43C, with very little CPU usage, but now it is around 60C and 100% across the two cores. The only way to 'get back to normal' is to use :
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
but of course Spotlight doesn't work at all.
I've used 'sudo fs_usage -w -f filesys mdworker' but I can't see anything that mdworker is perhaps choking on.
Does any have any ideas? I'm racking my brain to remember if I did anything different a few days back that might have caused this to happen, but apart from just normal email and web surfing, nothing else springs to mind.
    Help!

This solved my questionRe: mdworker process suddenly high CPU usage     Nov 28, 2012 1:41 AM    (in response to antobal)
In my case it was the BritannicaBookmark.mdimporter that was a PowerPC mdimporter. But it was not in \library\spotlight but inBritannica 12.0/Ultimate Reference Suite.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight.
You can see what spotlight plugin is choking on you by selecting the mdworker process in the Activity monitor and click on Open files and processes.
Sounds helpful, but I don't see "Open files and processes" in Activity Monitor. If I click on inspect, I get a choice to "Sample" processes. I get a system log that is a bit beyond me.

I was having the same problem, and a second level support person at Apple helped me solve the issue today:
Look in the \library\spotlight folders both at your drive root level and your user folder. These folders contain spotlight plugins, with the extension .mdimporter. Some of those plugins, if defective, can make the Spotlight indexing processes to run continuously.
Also sounds helpful, I found .mdimporter files in my system library, but nothing looked unusual. I didn't see a spotlight folder in my user library. I looked in application support and several other places. I used Onyx to repair permissions, rebuild spotlight index, clear caches etc, rebooted, it seems to be OK now.

I followed these instrucitons and the worked perfectly on my HTPC build (running the AMD APU A4-4000 on a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI).  I have a quick question though.  When I want to shutdown or reboot I hit the power button on the lower left of the XBMC main window.  Usually a dialog menu pops up giving me the option to Suspend, Shut-Down, Reboot... etc. etc.  The menu in the xbmc-xvba build only shows "Exit".  How do I enable these other options?  I'd like to at least be able to shutdown or reboot from within XBMC.
    EDIT:
    Nevermind, I solved it..
    I found this thread
It says that running XBMC as a service will not register my session and polkit will not work.  I have to autologin as the user xbmc and startx automatically.
I followed the instructions here and here.  Then I added "exec xbmc --standalone" to the end of my /var/lib/xbmc/.xinitrc file.
    Everything works fine now.

  • 10.8.2 Browser CPU Usage

My MBP 2011 is having some serious issues with CPU usage for both Safari and FireFox. An idle browser will start to consume >100% CPU at a constant rate for no apparent reason whatsoever, and it will continue to do so until I shut it down. I once left the browser open, walked away, and from a full charge, my MBP battery was depleted within the hour, if not sooner. In fact, with FireFox, the CPU usage becomes so intense that I can't barely drag the mouse to the dock to termiante the browser. I reinstalled my OS at one point, and the issue persists.

All I can suggest is to try chrome. I've used for a few years on PC and on my Mac for the last 14 months with no problems what so ever.
Of course you could unintstall and reinstall FireFox and test. Not so easy to do with Safari as it is part of the OS and the only way I know of reinstalling is to reinstall the operating system. I have no idea if it can be uninstalled.
