3750's - Throughput Issue.

I have a throughput issue on 3750's that I cannot find a reason for.
Here are the models and SW versions:
Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image
1 28 WS-C3750G-24TS 12.2(20)SE C3750-I5-M
* 2 52 WS-C3750-48TS 12.2(20)SE C3750-I5-M
3 52 WS-C3750-48P 12.2(20)SE C3750-I5-M
I am encountering slow response between servers in one vlan and SOME clients in another vlan.
If I place a "SLOW CLIENT" in the same VLAN as the server (Same ports/cabling etc) the throughput problem goes away.
The intervlan routing takes place withing the stack itself and not externally.
I can find no reason for this behavior, CPU/Memory are well within limits.
I have been reading IOS release notes but can find no mention of this. I see no other people on this forum having similar issues.
Does anyone have any thoughts ?

If you have double checked the client and switchport settings to make sure they match exactly then I'm not sure . It could be something like this , at least soemthing to check.

SYMPTOMS / CONDITIONS
Cisco has found occasional intermittent contact on the 3750 product
stacking cable when using the "Fox" labled speciified cables. The location
below shows a photograph of the label showing the word "Fox" printed on the
label.
Sjc-fs1\WG-D\DSBU-Escalation\Published\Bugs\CSCed30201\3750_Bad_Stacking_Cable_Label.doc
WORKAROUND:
These "Fox" labeled cables should be replaced. Contact Cisco's TAC and
request a cable only replacement.
No problem exists with the 3750 switch itself and should NOT be replaced.
The customer should be advised that the "Fox" labeled cable should be
destroyed so that the customer will not accidentally place the defective
cable back in service at some later time.
BACKGROUND:
Failures were found in Cisco's DSBU lab that cause an intermittency resulting
in reduced traffic speed.
Failure analysis was completed by the cable / receptical vendor. The failure
indicated a substandard design, with an out of tolerance tongue in the plug and
potential misalignment in the receptical. This vendor has been disqualified
at this time.

  • Cisco 3750 Ghost Multicast Issues

We are having problems with Symantec Ghost 8.0 (Solution Suite 1.0) multicast sessions autonegotiating and transmitting at 10MB half duplex over stacked 10/100 Catalyst 3750s (WS-C3750-48PS-E). Both sides of the connection are set to autonegotiate. The clients will connect at 100MB full duplex and start the multicast session but then we will immediately see one port on the 3750 drop to 10MB half duplex and log thousands of collisions. If we kill the session and drop that system out of the mulicast and retransmit, then another port will automatically drop to 10MB half duplex as soon as the data starts to push. We use the same NIC chipset and NDIS drivers for Ghost throughout our entire operation but are only having this problem with two switches in the stack (7 total). If this were an overall incompatibility issue between the NDIS driver we're using (Broadcom 57xx), ghost, and the Cisco IOS then why do we not see this behavior on all of our switches? Our operation is too large (university) to hard code 100MB full duplex on both sides of the connection so we really need autonegotiation to work. We do not see any collisions on these switches when we are not using Ghost multicast. CPU and memory utilization on the 3750s are normal while the session is transmitting. We've tried the suggested fixes from Symantec (which really only included messing arround with TTL values on the ghost server end) and different versions of NIC drivers to no avail.

There are multiple clients receiving the mcast stream and each time a different client/port has the problem. All it takes is one port throttling down to slow the ghost multicast for the entire session (effectively a 15GB image which should take 40min to ghost at 100MB full duplex takes 4.5 hours to complete). IGMP snooping is working as far as I can tell. We're not seeing any multicast or broadcast packet floods during the ghost session and I'm seeing the IGMP, CGMP, and PIMv2 communications happening between the switches and routers via packet sniffs. We aren't doing any deliberate bandwidth throttling at all (QoS not enabled).
We've circumvented the Cisco switches in question with several different portable switches from other manufacturers and can image out fine at 100MB full duplex. As I stated in my original post, we can also ghost through other 3750s in the same stack with no problem. I also have two other floors in our building that use stacked Catalsyst 3750s and we have no issues with them as well.
We're not getting any packet loss or corruption. Just reduced throughput.

  • Network user access to local disk to solve I/O throughput issue?

Not sure if this is the best forum for this, but...
    THE ISSUE:
I work at a small university and am responsible for the Mac network and video dept (only 1 xserve and about 20-odd clients). Anyway, everyone uses network accounts. I have 3 iMacs for Final Cut and so far everyone just captures to the server over gigabit ethernet. We're only using DV25 (~4MB/sec transfer) and it hasn't been an issue until this week. Now as people begin to stress more about final projects, however, and are spending more time, the suites are being used more during the same times. Even though the throughput is usually less than 10MB/sec, which (I think?) is well under what gigabit ethernet supports, we're consistently getting stalled video and dropped frames. We've often had multiple people working on projects (playback) simultaneously in the past, but never capturing simultaneously before. Also, another factor that may come into play, is my 3TB RAID 5 that they're using has become rather full at this point (down to 200MB) so perhaps read/write times are being affected?
Now, we're looking at adding 6 more Final Cut suites, which will potentially increase my throughput load by 200%, so I really need to find a solid solution (and fibre cards are not an option since they're iMacs--and we don't have that budget anyway).
    THE QUESTION:
Since the issue seems to only occur while capturing and not during playback, it seems the easiest solution would be to give the editor group access to the local hard drive (and then copy from there to their network storage so they can work on any given station later) which I'm not sure how the best way to do this would be. OR, should gigabit ethernet be capable of sustaining the throughput I need and there's some other problem I should be looking at to fix that?
Related, if they do capture to the local disk (or even an external hard drive, which we may end up going to), is there some script or something that can be run every night to automatically copy files from X location on a local drive to Y location (say, a common media storage location) on the server RAID?

    Hi
    +". . . my 3TB RAID 5 that they're using has become rather full at this point (down to 200MB). . ."+
I think the problem you're currently seeing starts (and probably ends) here. Regardless of what your data comprises of the general rule of thumb is to make sure you keep at least 10% of free disk space for any hard drive let alone a RAID. Most people would generally recommend 15% for a RAID 5. A rough calculation based on your 3TB RAID would mean you should keep at least 300GB free. You're well below that unless 200MB is a typo? I'm surprised the whole thing has not ground to a halt?
Video Capture, Editing and Playback in a network home environment is always going to place a considerable strain on any network unless you've prepared the ground first. For example 60 seconds of RAW Video is roughly 200MB in size. Multiply this for a classroom of 16 and that's a lot of data. Even if you're not using hi-def you're still talking a lot of data.
There are better ways of doing this.

  • 3750-48/3750-12s compatibility issue

Has any one ever seen a problem like the following?
We have a stacked pair of 3750-48s (SMI) ether-channeled to a stacked paire of 3750-12s switches (EMI). The channeled ports are each on separate switches within their respective stacks.
Everything is woring fine. We power down one of the 3740-12s and we lose 1 ping across the etherchannel (works perfect). Howver, when we first power back up the 3750-12, and I mean within a couple of seconds the link light comes on on the 3750-48 that it connects to and the 3750-48 thinks the channels is back up. We begin loosing pings until the 12s is fully powered up. Seems like a bug to me. We are running 12.2.25 Code. I'm in the process of opening a TAC case but just Thought I'd toss it out here.
Also, we removed the stack configuration and Etherchannel and just connected one 48-port switch to one 12-port switch. The same issue happened. As soon as we powered up the 3750-12s the link light on the 48port comes up ( 2 seconds tops).

    Hi,
I have seen similar between 3750's with Etherchannelled uplinks to 6509 switches
It turned out to be a bug with running different versions of spanning tree between both sets of switches.
I think the 3750's were running PVST+ and the 6509's were running RSPT.
This was diagnosed by a Cisco consultancy, when one of the Etherchannel links was dropped, it caused EIGRP to reconverge and all sorts of timeouts occured for a while. Unfortunately i haven't had time to test it since the changes were made but i know the consultancy reproduced this issue in their lab which resulted in them hardcoding both sets of switches to PVST+
Have a look and see if this could be the same for you.

  • 3750 Stack Switch Issue

    Hi
I have Stack of 7 3750 Switches. In that Switch 1 is master with 15 Priority and other switches are Member but because of some reason switch 1 rebooted and then Switch 2 becomes Master because it’s having 14 Priority.
We have 2 uplinks which connected on switch 1 (1/1/1) and switch 6 (6/1/1) Tengig port. Also we have 4 AP connected on switch 6.
So we observed that the Switch 1 came up and after that 3 AP is disconnected from WLC. if we disconnect the uplink port on Switch 1 (1/1/1) AP will connect the WLC and using uplink 6/1/1 but if we connect uplink port 1/1/1 and disconnect the uplink port 6/1/1 all 4 AP will disconnect from Network.
We try to connect the Uplink 1/1/1 to Switch 1 other port 1/1/2 but face the same issue. So we reconnect the port 6/1/1 and used the same link which connect on 1/1/1 to switch 7 (7/1/1) and AP will connect on WLC. So as per this troubleshooting we thought some issue with Network Module or Switch of Switch1.
So we Swap the Network module between Switch1 and Switch7 and connect the uplink on 1/1/1 but face the same issue and if we connect the same uplink on Switch 7 Ap connect to WLC.
So we thought that Switch is having issue. But before raising an RMA for Switch we observer 1 more thing that. Earlier that when the Switch 1 is Master all 4 AP's connected to WLC and working fine but when the Switch1 became rebooted and Switch2 became Master issue started. So we rebooted the Switch 2 and make switch master and found that while connecting on port 1/1/1 of Switch port AP's are able to connect to WLC and Issue resolved.
So I wants to know that is there any requirement that If the high priority switch rebooted and after came up it should not be Master then connected uplink will not work.
Also let us know what’s happen if the high priority switch came up in network. Means it’s will became Master or Menber.

Just now i Found one bug which is matching on our issue.
3750x stack fails to update ARP table after reboot causing traffic loss
    BUG ID:-CSCtz98066
Symptoms: When the master switch (Switch A) is reloaded or loses power and
rejoins the stack as a member switch, any traffic stream being sent through
Switch A is unable to be received by the destination because the newly joined
member is not able to establish an ARP entry for the next hop router/switch.
Debugs confirm that Switch A does not send a GARP/ARP for the next hop, though
traffic continues to be sent to the switch.
Conditions: The symptom is observed when only Switch A has a physical
connection between the source and destination router/L3 switch. The newly
elected master (Switch B) does not.
Workaround: Ping destination from Switch A, forcing ARP request/response.
Also affected version is 12.2(58)SE and15.0(1)SE2 and we are using IOS 12.2(58)SE.
So we are going to upgrade the devices by this weekend with IOS 15.0(2)SE5.
Will update you once we upgraded the switches.

  • SOFS Throughput Issues

A question very similar to mine exists here.
I have a SOFS cluster (3 hosts). I connected each without nic teaming at first and later tested with nic teaming. I'm using a single 10GbE Netgear M7100-24X switch. The CSV is configured as a 2-way mirror through storage space using a SAS JBOD with
24 disks. Each host is configured the same way with 32 GB of RAM. 6 GB is set for CSV cache.
I ran ntttcp test (v5.28) with 8 threads. Sending to the SOFS host, I get over 1100 MB/s throughput. Receiving from the SOFS, I get just under 680 MB/s throughput. So the switch looks to be working fine.
When using LAN Speed Test (Lite), connections directly to the file share folders (\\host#\c$\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Shares\folder) for a 200MB file for each server averages to about 700 Mbps write and 2000 Mbps read. Connection to the cluster role (\\sofs\folder),
results in 90 Mbps write and 2000 Mbps read. However, after waiting for a minute for it to start running, the speed test starts and pauses repetitively. I know this doesn't mean much because it isn't testing transfers from SMB to SMB.
Since I can't set up another SMB to test SMB to SMB transfer, I'm jumping straight to Hyper-V. In VMM, I added SOFS file share folder to an existing vm cluster. After that, I migrated a vm to one of the hosts in the cluster with high availability checked
and saw that it indeed used the \\sofs\folder.
Using LAN Speed Test (Lite) on that vm and back to that particular vm host, I'm getting under 90 Mbps write and 340 Mbps read. If you recall the earlier results directly to \\sofs\folder, the write speed is similar to just regular file transfer speed, but
the read speed is 6 times lower. Sending with ntttcp, I'm getting an average of 11 MB/s throughput, which does explain the 90 Mbps write. And receiving from the host, I'm getting an average of 42 MB/s throughput, which also explains the 340 Mbps read speed. But
another vm hosted by the same server without SOFS is giving me 350 MB/s sending and 360 MB/s receiving to and from that host respectively. Although way faster, this does seem a little bit slower. I then ran Passmark Network Test to be thorough. Max speed
of the vm using SOFS is 100 Mbps sending and 330 Mbps receiving. The vm without SOFS is 7500 Mbps sending and 6000 Mbps receiving. I don't know why ntttcp differs from Passmark this much. (Maybe ntttcp not as optimized for 10GbE?)
But disregarding discrepancies on the results for the vm without SOFS, it is still clear that the vm with SOFS as storage is way slower. To rule out nic teaming as the solution to my problems, I've set up nic teaming (switch independent and dynamic) to all
the SOFS hosts. I didn't get much difference in the results. As I do not have another switch, I don't think nic teaming helped with the load balancing. And I haven't set up link aggregation (MLAG) on the switch either.
Is this the speeds that I should be getting, or are there other optimizations or configurations you can suggest? I'll be honest, a single vm on SOFS doesn't lag very much if at all despite its awful throughput I'm currently getting. What I'm scared of is
if I put 50 vms and have SQL Server run off the SOFS.

I'm using normal 10 GbE NIC with just RSS; I should have mentioned that I'm only using Intel X520-T2 nics.
As for getting 7500 Mbps throughput on the VM host without using SOFS, let me clarify. On host A, I have two virtual machines. One VM is set up to use SOFS and HA, the other one is just on host A itself. The VM on SOFS is giving me 90
Mbps write and 340 Mbps read. And the VM stored on the host itself is giving me 7500 Mbps write
and 6000 Mbps reading. BTW, typically I get better read speeds than writes, it might be the day and hour. Earlier today when I reran the benchmarks, it was 7300/7500 Mbps write/read. The VM with the SOFS is still the same however.
I was told before that we don't need RDMA at a Microsoft conference, but now I think it's only true for a lab environments... The company I work for does not have
the budget to buy RNIC and SFP+ switches for now.
I'm going to try to implement these
solutions first. I currently only using a single VNIC. Give me a day or two.
What I'm currently wondering about is that the DNS servers on the network are not on the 10 GbE network. I'm wondering if the data is staying on the 10 GbE network and not going out to the 1 GbE network first. This is a total guess.

  • 3750-2960 Vlans Issue via Port Channel

Im trying to get all my vlans to pass thru to my 2960 user level switches, from my 3750 stack.

I have 1 stack of 3750, connected with flex technology.
I have 3 stacks of 4-2960s, connected with flex technology.
Then, each 2960 stack is connected to my 3750 stack via port channels (gig ports x2).
Now, this is a second office site. We are connected to our datacenter via private ethernet line, and thats where most of our vlans and servers reside.

  • 3750-s IOS Issue

    Hi all

    can i upgrade 3750-s IOS to 3750-e

    Hello,
actually, to begin with, the naming convention for the standard and enhanced images has been changed. The standard image is now IP Base, and the enhanced image is IP Services. Have a look at the product bulletin below:
The feature pack naming convention is changing in the 3560 and 3750 series switches. This is being done in order to make them match more closely to the naming scheme for our router products.
The "Standard" software load/license is being renamed "IP Base"
The "Enhanced" software is being renamed "IP Services"
A new feature pack, "Advanced IP Services" is being added for the primary purpose of adding IPv6 support on top of the Enhanced feature pack.
Regarding the difference between the two images, IP Base (standard) and IP Services (enhanced), have a look at the Q&A below. Scroll down to the question right under Table 1:

  • Gig DWDM connection between 2 x 3750's

We have a customer that has a gig DWDM connection between 2 cat3750's. The interfaces are SMF.
He is complaining of throughput issues. He has a pair of AIX servers transfering a file between them using we believe RPC (not 100% sure). If he does it across the gig link he gets 300mbps, if he does it across a single switch or across two switches locally connected he gets 700mbps. I have checked the cfgs, and fibre connections and interface errors. they have also used spare 3750's to do the test again. Not sure if the transfer suffers in both directions. They are not using oversized frames. We have not replaced the GBIC's yet.
The links have been tested by ISP, and show now issues, the tets results show now latency. The 3750 code is SEC.
    Any ideas

Is MLS QoS enabled on the switch by any chance?
I expirienced trouble with 3750 using 1000-BASE-SX and 1000-BASE-LH lasers that gave poor peformance with file transfers.
This was the case on switches that had MLS QoS enabled for IP phones.
The symptoms are described in bug toolkit CSCeg29704. There is a workaround. Upgrading to 12.2(25)SED or higher resolves the problem.
    Release Notes
After enabling QOS on 3750 and 3560 switches, certain application (mostly bursty
and TCP based) experience significant performance degradation due to unexpected
packet drops on some of the egress queues.
This is due to initial default egress queue threshold settings
(when qos enabled) not optimized for this type of traffic pattern.
This initial default queue threshold settings (when qos enabled)
thus need to be changed to accommodate these traffic.
    Workaround:
Tune the egress queue thresholds parameters to
allocate more to the affected queues.
Specifically, egress queue 2 thresholds need to have the following settings:
    Thresholds1 = 200
    Thresholds2 = 200
    Reserved = 50
    Maximum = 400
    e.g.
    mls qos queue-set output 1 threshold 2 200 200 50 400
    mls qos queue-set output 2 threshold 2 200 200 50 400

  • Deployment of WLC-5508 with 2702i-D have performance issue.

    Hi Team,
We have centrally deployed WLC-5508 with 50 AP licence along with HA scenario. we have 3 locations.
    1- HQ. have 26 AP with POWINJ5.
    2- Branch location A- 8 AP with POWINJ5.
    3. Branch location B have 8 AP with POWINJ4.
my exception is to achieve that  single SSID with dynamic VLAN from group police (NPS). MY HO have 26 AP and those are working in local mode.
and branches are connected through flexconnect mode. and all are working with different-2 NPS.
Now i am facing a problem with this deployment are following.
1- branch A have performance issue.
    2- HQ have performance issue.
3- i don't want to go with dedicated NPS for every location.
In order to achieve this deployment i want only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS at my HQ with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users vlans..
above is my problem and concern. otherwise i am successfully achieving this solution with dedicated NPS with single group policy. but when i am going forward to achieve my expectation that time i am facing authentication issue at my HQ and sometimes am not able to get proper VLAN IPs. at my HQ.
kindly help me in that to understand where I am doing wrong things to achieve my expectation.
    Thanks.
    Nalin

I am facing 2 different problems.
1st issue- in existing setup we have throughput issue. (while downloading or uploading any data from the internet or Intranet,  that time wireless clients are facing slowness of the Speed. and same time when i am trying from LAN i am not facing any issue)
2nd Issue- I want to achieve only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS (AD group is bind with vlan Attributes) with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users.
for Issue no 2 i have created SSID to achieve the single ssid parameter for every location. in order to achieve i have change all access points mode local to Flexconnect mode after that i have created AP groups location wise and then create flexconnect Groups where i have mapped all the vlan through AAA VLAN-ACL mapping. created interface group and mapped all the vlans in that group.
for more understanding please go through the below mentioned CLI view.

  • M-20 Valet Plus Throughput

I recently signed up for boosted bandwidth and installed a better  "n" modem, but my router isn't cooperating.
My  M20 Valet Plus ( v1.0.04 build 7 Dec, 2010)   chokes throughput to 10%, ie 30 mbps input yields 3.0 mbps output.
In  Zdnet speed runs on my wiFi laptop the needle bounces off 30, and settles in at 3.0.
Sometimes it also chokes the service through the Ethernet port for my PC.
Is there a remedy (such as  a re-jiggered Valet setting) other than router replacement.?

    Hi twillz,
Just to verify, is the speed  (throughput) issue happening on wired or wireless?
If it's through a wired connection, you can change the MTU size to 1452 (on the router's interface page) or you can do a firmware upgrade.
If it's through a wireless connection, you can play around with the router's channels. You can set it to either 1, 6, 9, or 11.
Try checking your laptop's WiFi adapter. Even if your router is running on N technology and your laptop's adapter is running on G technology, you'd still be getting a slow wireless connection.
The router's Security mode can also affect the router's performance (speed). If it's on WEP, try changing it to WPA2 Personal.

  • AirPort Extreme and Time Warner RoadRunner Service Issue

I have Time Warner's RoadRunner Turbo Internet service, which promises a minimum bitrate of 15 Mbps for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads. Recently, my measured throughput has crashed on uploads, to well below 100 Kbps (0.01 Mbps) while going through my AirPort Extreme over 100/1000Base-T cable (system 7.4.2). When I directly connect my Mac to the cable modem, I get a consistent 28 Mbps down and 1.7 Mbps up and a ping time of 20 ms. I've tried cycling power, soft resetting, and even hard resetting to factory settings, but nothing seems to fix this throughput issue. I'm going to try a cheap 3rd party router (D-Link or Linksys) to see if I can get my throughput back up, but is there something I'm missing on my setup? I have opened SSH, IMAP and Apple Remote Desktop through the AirPort Extreme, and have enabled Bonjour on it. I can't figure out why this change has happened so suddenly.

power down the network and the modem. connect modem to the extreme wan port. connect pc to ethernet lan port. power modem up first then the router. use Airport Utility to configure your network.

  • WRT610N v1 connection issues, media center and internet

Good evening. I am having a connection issue with my wireless/wired connection and am wondering if anyone else has had the issue.
    I am running the following
    WRT610N V1
    Firmware Version: 1.00.03 B15
    Windows 7 Enterprise Edition
I have an Xfxforce 780i motherboard with onboard dual 1gb nics plugged into the router.
I am also using an Xbox 360 Wireless N device.
The issue i have been having recently are two, both seem to be router related.  Sometimes while gaming or on the web I will losing connection to my gateway. I have both of my nic mac addressed reserved in the router.  On my windows 7 machine the internet connection will stop working and I will have to repair the connection.
The issue i have been experiencing with my Xbox 360 is sever choppiness while streaming recorded tv shows over my network
For the most part while I am streaming the video's i am doing nothing else, it should be noted that i can watch the vidoes on the PC without an issue so the issue shouldn't be pc related.  I initally though maybe resource related but the vidoes run fine on the pc.  Restarting has no effect.
I did do a hard reset on my router but that did not solve the issue.  The issue is semi random but the frequence is fairly higher.  Sometimes I will get through a full show or two and sometimes the quality of the steam will be horried. Where pausing and restarting won't do anything.
I have used a direct wired connection and I still get the video degredation so I believe the issue is my access point.
For the price that i paid for this unit, $200 - yes i did say 200 as it is a V1 model and i got it when they came out, this is one of the worst issue I have ever had.
I am going to test a netgear 54g tomorrow night to see what experience I get.
I did some poking on the forum here and I noticed others have had some degredation issue but nothing seem to solve it even though their threads are marked as solved.  I have tried turning off windows 7 firewall and disabling my AV to make sure those weren't the issue, which they aren't.
It should be noticed that my machine is the following and I am fairly sure the issue isn't pc hardware related.
    win7 pro
    xfx force 780i
    intel e8500 dc 3.16
    evga nvida 9800 gtx ssc
seagate dual 250gb raid 0 hard drive
    4gb g.skill pc8500 ram.
I am adding more ram later this weekend to take it to 8gb and a new 1tb drive to transfer my media center data too. I do not believe this will fix my issue since the only issue I can see is the Linksys router.
    thoughts?

Try these things, in this order:
    1. Disable Home Defender.
If that does not work, try
    2. Reducing MTU to 1300 (recommended by someone else on here for a throughput issue). This may not be relevant to you, but it doesn't hurt to try. MTU settings don't generally apply to in-network connections. But who knows what's what when it comes to this router.
    3. Disable Upnp. Some people, like myself find this setting necessary - but you may want to just go ahead and disable to see if that helps.
    4. You need to remove the name of the competing product (that router) from your post. I got banned from the forum for a few days for mentioning that I was using so and so router for the time being. Do it before the post is deleted or you're banned.
Good Luck. Let us know if anything here fixes your problem.
Remember that you'll need to give the router 'time' with each fix separately. Don't  do all 3 things. Do 1 at a time and give the router a few days, to feel out if the solution works or not.
    Good Luck.

  • K7D Master-L MS-6501 computer locks up when transferring data to external HD

I'm not 100% sure the problem is with the motherboard, but I think I've narrowed it down to the point that the MB could be the problem, and so I figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone else had heard of this problem or perhaps had any suggestions as to what it could be...anyway...
Here's the problem: whenever I try to transfer large data files onto my LaCie 250GB external HD, my computer locks up completely.  No CTRL+ALT+DEL.  No Pass Go (and certainly no $200 :P).  The connection interface is USB 2.0, to which I use the USB 2.0 controller card that came with my MB.  When I connected the HD to my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5150, I think), it transferred the files flawlessly.  Also, when I connected the drive to my roommate's desktop (another homemade system, though much beefier), it also read from/wrote to the HD without a hitch.  I even tried connecting the HD to my laptop, and (since my desktop & laptop are on the same network) mapped the HD onto my desktop as a network drive.  Then I transferred 24GB+ of data w/o any lock ups or problems whatsoever.  However, when I reconnected the HD back to my desktop and tried transferring a little over 500MB worth of files, it locked up after getting about 75% through.  I even tried disconnecting all of USB devices but the HD (and my mouse) and it still locked up after getting so far w/ the transfer.
The issue doesn't seem to be a data-throughput issue, b/c it transferred just fine when the HD was mapped as a network drive, and the drive works flawlessly on other computers, so I don't think the problem is in the drive itself (or the cable).  The only time there is an issue is when the HD is connected to my desktop via any USB port (I've tried both the on-board ports as well as the controller card ports).  Have any of you guys (or gals) ever heard of such an issue?  I hesitate to say it's the ports themselves b/c I've got about 8+ USB devices connected to my computer at any given time, and none of them have any issues communicating back and forth (nor have they ever locked up my machine like it's doing now).  A couple of friends have suggested that it might be a driver or BIOS issue, but I can't seem to find any USB driver updates for my MB model (I have only the ones on the disc that came w/ my MB) and the MSI website warns not to flash the BIOS if everything is running ok with your computer (which it is, minus this issue).  My BIOS version is 1.6 (probably should've put that w/ my signature :P)
I hope this is enough info to go on.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time!

To my knowledge, both of the other systems it was tested on had SP1 installed (I know that's the case on my laptop).
I dunno if it would make a difference, but my laptop has WinXP Home, whereas my desktop has Pro installed.
