3850 switch stack rebooting

I have a stack with 3 ws-C3850-48T switches.
They are running 3.3.4SE firmware.
Installed 12 sept this year.
Yesterdag the stack suddently rebootet.
To day they have just rebootet Again.
Are there a more stable version ?

Since these are 3850s, I am assuming you have service contract.  If yes, open a ticket with Cisco before upgrading the IOS as it can also be hardware related issue.

Ans: Yes you can, but the switch will leave the stack

Ans for all above 3: For Stack configuration to work properly, switches must have the exactly same ISO
Recommendation: If they're many switches in stack,
    1. upload the IOS file in all the switches
    2. change the boot order in running config by:
boot system flash: <new ios fiile name>
boot system flash: <old ios fiile name>
    3.  take the reload one  by one & copy the running config
    4. in this case, basically you would be making the new parallel switch stack by adding the reloaded switch with same config but with new IOS image

  • How many Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches can make up a Cisco StackPower stack?

I know the number of Cisco 3850 switches for stacking is 9, so, if I make up a Cisco StackPower stack, MAX is 9, too?

  • Setting up VLANS for WAPS on 3850 switches

This may not be the right forum to ask, but I have asked under LAN switching and routing and have not gotten any help, so maybe posting here will help - here is what I need help with:
Set up two SSID's on four autonomous 1600 series WAPs - one for employees wireless network access and one for customer guest access, both password protected. We have two 3850 switches, stacked.  The WAPS are plugged into ports 41 and 42 on each switch.  I know I need two separate VLANs - one for each SSID, but don't know how to do this on the switches - can someone help me with the syntax of the commands to apply to the switch?

  • What is the max number of 3850 switches in a stack

This doc states 4.  Has there been any change to allow more?
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-3850-series-switches/qa_c67-722110.html

Up to 9 Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches can be stacked together to build single logical StackWise-480 switch since Cisco IOS XE Release 3.3.0SE.
Prior to Cisco IOS XE Release3.3.0SE, up to 4 Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches could be stacked together.

  • Add 3850 Switch to existing Core Stack

    Hello,
I need to add a 3850 to our collapsed core Current setup - 5-3850 stack switches with vlans and routing enabled.
We are in need of more ports and I purchased a 3850.
I will add the switch to the core via a trunk port
    I will make vtp transparent
I will configure the magt vlan 10 with an IP addess.
    QUESTION.
After this is done, do I make the switch VTP client?
Also, do I turn on IP routing? Or, with the trunk send all packets destined for other vlans over the trunk to the core, and the core will hanle routing?
I am talking about routing between vlans, so user vlan 64 can talk to vlan 64.
I have been doing routing on WAN so long I have forgotten best practices on the LAN and L3 Switching.
    OR.....
Do I simply add this to the switch stack?
    Thank you for any help!
    -T
    Any help is appreciated.

When you add a switch to an existing stack it gets all of its configuration from the stack master.
Just verify it has the same IOS version installed (and doesn't have switch priority set such that it takes over as master) and plug it in via the stacking cables.
If you're adding it as a new access switch then yes just trunk all the VLANs across the uplink to the core. If you have a VTP server setup then set your VTP domain and come up in client mode. If the routing is active on the core and your VLAN SVIs are all there, there's no need for routing on the access layer and the only SVI you need is for management (or use the dedicated management interface for out of band management in its own VRF).

  • Can I use DHCP snooping and IOS DHCP server on the same switch stack

    Hello,
I am shortly going to be deploying a Cisco CallManager solution for a customer whose network comprises stacks of Catalyst 3850 switches.
There is no separate core/server farm switch so the CallManager servers, voice gateways and IP phones will all plug into the same stack and be in the same VLAN (not my choice!).
For security we want to enable DHCP snooping and were planning on using the IOS DHCP server on the Catalyst switch stack.
Will this work? - when I enable DHCP snooping in networks with separate access layer switches I set the uplinks to the core as trusted links.
I am not sure whether DHCP snooping will work in this case. Do I need to set the VLAN interface on the switch as trusted, is this even possible?
Unfortunately I do not have access to a layer 3 switch to test this at the moment.
    Thanks

    Nope.  That's the issue.
They'll sync on a third device acting as a hotspot, but the device sending a signal is not "on" the network it creates so the airport is all by itself on that network.  At least that is what it looks like to me.  Anyone have another take on it?  Seems pretty silly that an iPad can put out a wifi signal, an Airport Express can receive a wifi signal, and yet there is no simple way to get them to communicate under this particular condition.

  • Has anyone deployed converged access with 3850 switches and 5760 WLCs?

Has anyone deployed a converged access network architecture with 3850 switches and 5760 WLCs? I have done lots of projects with the 5508 WLCs In a centralized deployment. Basically with this design, I manage 2 logical networks as the wireless network is an overlay over the wired network. I can design firewall to segregate traffic between the wired and wireless hence I can carry both staff and guest traffic.
Now Cisco is telling us that there is new design such that the dats plane traffic can be dropped locally through the 3850 switched. I am not sold on this and have not found any recommended best practices on when should we use a converged access architecture.
    Pros
With converged access, data traffic is terminated at the MA which is on the switches, hence the WLC will not be a bottleneck? This is to prepare adoption for 802.11ac?
Less hops for voice calls from user A to user B as data control traffic is dropped locally.
    Cons
Now how do I segregate guest and staff traffic if my security folks say I need a firewall?
Troubleshooting wireless client mobility will be a nightmare as the 3850 switches are MA.
Pushing and upgrading code for the Code will mean upgrading the stack of switches in the LAN riser. This will be painful in a huge campus environment like an university.
Can someone convince me why would a customer choose converged access?
Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

They choose CA because of the capwap termination at the switch. You can still use a 5508 and tunnel guest to a DMZ segment if you wish. You will need a 5508 though is you want to tunnel traffic to an anchor WLC.

    Hi Reza,
Thank you for your quick reply, and for putting the record staright. As such, a helpful rating was provided
PS: Feel free to help me one more time if you happend to know folllow on this query :)>
I guess that the disributed function has been included in the standard mulitcast routing command because the key word is no longer needed. Or perhaps this platform does not support this at all.#

  • Blocked Stack Ports on 2960X-48FPD-L Stack (Unstable Switch Stack!) Spanning Tree?

I am having an issue where 2 2960X-48FPD-L Switches in a redundant flexstack (stack port 1 SW1 to port  2 SW2 and port 2 SW1 to port 1 SW2) ring.
At first running the 15.0(2).EX5 (and earlier EX3, and EX4) version IOS yielded all the ports on the stack master switch refusing to run spanning tree and would only link in amber and not pass any traffic other than CDP information (the slave switch linked in fine).
I upgraded to 15.2(3)E and this solved the problem of the ports not linking in green and participating in spanning tree.
Now, however, about every week or two I lose connectivity to the switch stack and I was able to go to the switch stack locally and found that for some reason the switch stack is blocking and unblocking VLANs on StackPort1 frequently (see below).  When I was at the site, I sometimes had connectivity, sometimes not.  A stack hard reboot brought everything back up, but this is the second time this has occurred and I would expect the same problem in the next week or so.
Has anyone else run into these issues, and have you found a solution?
I'm guessing that if I either get rid of the redundancy on the switch stack or stack using Ethernet cables between switches the problem will go away, but then what is the point of using stackable switches in a non redundant low speed stack.  It seems to me that Spanning tree thinks that I have a spanning tree loop going on with the stack ports which I didn't even think was possible.
    What do you think?

    Jim,
We have also the same problem with our 2960-X switches (access) connecting to a pair of 4500x (VSS) except our issue is with Portchannel with 2 physical links connecting the 2960xs to the 4500.

  • Cisco 3850 Power Stack

    Hi
We recently purchased four Cisco 3850 switches (WS-C3850-48P-S) which comes with 715WAC power supply. We have also purchased additional four 1100WAC power supplies.
    Our requirements are:
    Configure four switches in stack
    Use power stack feature
All 192 ports in Stack should be POE enabled
    Questions:
Can we use both 715WAC and 1100WAC power supplies in same switch
Can we have all ports POE enabled with having both 715WAC and 1100WAC power supplie

  • 2 locations, 2 core switch stacks, fibre in between, equal cost load balancing between?

    Hi,
We've recently inherited a job that another company was doing, so we've had our hand slightly forced on the kit and overall topology involved, however that's all fine and we can make it work.
This is a collapsed core topology with core and access switches, split over 3 blocks (fibre connections between), one core switch/stack is in block B and the other in block C, with access switches throughout.
They require all access switches to be connected to the Core in B and the Core in C, and then obviously cross connects between the two cores.
    They state:
"Core switches shall be linked with 2x 1Gbps links bonded into a standard compliant Etherchannel"
"Uplinks between access and core switches shall be non-blocking - for example equal cost load balancing at layer 3, or layer 2 bonded multi-chassis Etherchannel"
The specced kit for the core are 3850's, in an ideal world I'd use VSS (Virtual Switch System) to achieve the above statements beyond repute; but this is only supported on 4500/6500 and Nexus platforms.
Do we think a cross stack etherchannel (LACP between both core switch stacks) would satisfy the above statements? Or the statements may just be badly worded...
I look forward to your thoughts and views on this! Thanks!

As the others have noted, the 3850s, to stack, are restricted to the length of the longest stack cables.
As you have noted, VSS physical units would allow the "logical" unit to be far apart.
For a "small" VSS core, the 4500-X might be an idea unit.  (Other than cost, the 4500 would be a better choice for a core device.)
Something to watch for, or understand, when running VSS, Etherchannel doesn't load balance as it does on a single chassis or stack.  VSS will avoid using the VSL cross link unless it must.
As many access switches, today, support basic L3 routing, you might also determine whether a L3 edge would be a suitable alternative choice.  It would allow retention of the 3850s and can offer some advantages even over VSS.  (Where VSS is very nice [as too the Nexus] supporting servers with Etherchannels.)

    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/3se/layer2/configuration_guide/b_lay2_3se_3850_cg/b_lay2_3se_3850_cg_chapter_0101.html
But on Q&A document, it mentioned 3850 supports PAgP.
    Q.    What cross-stack EtherChannel link bundling protocols are supported?
    A.     The Cisco Catalyst 3850 supports Cisco Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) and industry-standard IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). Other 3750 Series Switches support only LACP for cross-stack EtherChannel.
Seems like both statements are contradicting.
Can someone shed some light on this?
    Thank you.

    Hi, adimakmur
Cisco Catalyst 3850 Cross-Stack EtherChannel can be PAgP+ and can be used for VSS dual active detection.
In last deployment of 3850 we use Cross-Stack EtherChannel and use it as trusted for VSS dual active detection.
