38mbs download speed, slow browsing bur fast downl...
Hi,
I currently get 38meg download speed from BT however my general browsing is not very fast at all. In fact standard broadband I have about 6 months ago was faster!!
My actual downloads are very fast I am happy with that but its the browsing nternet that is really getting frustrating.
I phoned BT and they checked all the settings of the router and checked the line etc and reported no problems but my problems still persist.
MY laptop has 6gb ram and a dual processor, there has never been any problems before in fact its the same laptop when I had standard broadband which ran fine. I use Google chrome too for browsing and run regular virus scans with BT net prtector (or whatever its called)
Anybody have any idea why this may be, as at present I think I am going to cancel my contract in light of the price increase all beacause of this and go else where?
your router usually directs name resolution requests to bt dns servers
these convert web addresses that you type into numbers that the internet needs
bt dns servers are usually poor which could be responsible for the problems you have but the router doesnt allow you to change them
however it is possible to override them in the network settings of the pc

Download speed slow on Mac Pro but fast on MacBook Pro
I have an early 2008 8-core Mac pro, 6 GB RAM, running 10.6.8. I'm connected via ethernet to the HITRON CGN3 modem/WiFi router from Rogers. I'm only getting about 20Mbps download, and 10 Mbps upload. However, when I connect my 13" 2011 MacBook Pro (8 GB RAM) to the modem, also running 10.6.8 and using ethernet into the same port, I get about 80Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Even using WiFi, my MacBook Pro is able to get about 80Mbps download.
My network settings are the same in both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. I should be getting around 60-80Mbps download on my internet plan, but my Mac Pro is underperforming.
Anyone know the solution, or have experienced a similar issue?
Thanks in advance.Grant, you sir are a mega genius.
The culprit was the ethernet cable. I plugged the cable I was using for the Mac Pro into my MacBook and experienced a drop in download speed. Upon inspection, the cable had 6 wires. Who knew? This cable worked with my previous modem, and my speeds were pretty good. I just upgraded my internet package, and got this new modem, so I guess the cable is no longer incompatible.
Now that I've replaced the ethernet cable to my Mac Pro, my download speeds are smokin'.
Thanks, man, you saved the day! -
Airport download speeds slow when extending display to LCD
When I connect my Macbook using the mini display to DVI, DVI to HDMI adapter to my LCD TV, my download speeds pretty much fall off to nothing. When I disconnect the display adapter, the connection resumes. Any ideas?
Bob -
Was wondering if you can elaborate on your response and perhaps help me? I apologize if I have missed this topic covered elsewhere.
I am using a N-capable Time Capsule and an older model G-speed airport express. My biggest issue is that my wireless speeds are 1.5 download and 1.9 upload when in fact my cable modem pumps out 15! In reading your posts I see that my network is likely dropped down to G due to my old express, and in fact my computer may be running of a spliced version of that if using WDS settings?
I think i'll end up calling apple support at some point but was curious if you can go over the facts of using N and G together, and if i can have my macbook pro speak to my N network only and my iphone 3G speak to G airport express only?
Last piece of info is I use the airport express for my music.... not sure if this means they must be WDS or not? I'm just looking to get my N devices as fast as possible while continuing to use my G express. If you tell me i need to upgrade to a N express I can live with it.... but if i can avoid the $100 and work with what i have...all the better!
Thanks in advance,
Joe -
My internet download speed, which averages just over 5 Mb/s most of the day, slows to about 1 Mb/s every night at about 8:30-9:00 P.M. Pacific Time and lasts for a few hours. It is consistent and constant so random equipment or line problems are unlikely. I've saved the results of my speed tests (speedtest.net) as to evidence the problem and posted them below.
Please help.

Have you tried asking Verizon to change the circuit or edge router your DSL line connects to, in order to solve the problem? Often times there seems to be an imbalance in how circuits are loaded on Verizon's DSL network. It's a rather typical experience for a shared medium (such as DSL, Cable) but steps can be taken to try and balance off load periodically. Verizon should have some free circuits available that will allow you to reach your speeds during the night time hours.

Airport download speed SLOW!
I am having what I have found to be a common issue (from searching Mac forums)with Airport speeds on my Mac Pro. I am getting very slow download speeds with on my Airport Express network, however my upload speed is normal. I have 2 Mac laptops on the network, both receiving 2.5 to 2.8 mbps download speeds while the Mac Pro, 3 feet from the Airport, downloads between 300 and 1000 kbps. All computers are configured the same, and everything is working fine on the network, including the 2 laptops and an Xbox 360. Only the Mac Pro is experiencing problems.
Upon first hooking up the computer, it worked fine, but later in the day developed a problem with connecting to the network. A clean re-install fixed the problem, however, after a week or so, I am having the speed issue. While I was once able to stream music and video and use wireless printing from the Mac Pro, it is now too slow.
Furthermore, when selecting the airport icon from the menu bar, the computer hangs for a couple of seconds before opening the menu. Is there a solution to this problem? I have been unable to find a solution on the internet, yet I have read of several similar and identical problems with Intel-Macs.After a lengthy walk-through with an Apple Tech, we were able to fix the problem by power-cycling the Airport and Modem, erasing my network (in the Airport settings in Network Preferences) on the Mac Pro and re-adding it to the Preferred Networks, removing all cables from the Mac Pro, waiting 20 seconds, reattaching cables and then zapping the PRAM (apple, option, P, R) after the chime on start-up. Seems to be working fine now, hope it lasts!

I've recently purchased a new macbook retina 2014 13". What I've noticed is that the download speed is extremely slow, I get 500 kb/s, this is really slow for me and I actually bought this laptop for downloading and watching movies ... I've done a speedtest and it tells me
I have done a speedtest and it tells me I should get 80 mb/s,
Can somebody help me? -
I recently had my DSL modem/router fail. My service is through Qwest, and got a new Qwest sanctioned modem/router (Actiontec PK5000). I am using a wired ethernet connection to the modem/router. When I do speed tests it says I have a download speed of 1,200KB/Sec, but when I download a file it shows the download rate at <150KB/Sec. I contacted Qwest and they say it isn't anything on their end and that it is being limited by my internal ethernet adapter rate. I have no clue whether this is true or not, and if it is I don't know how to change it. Can anyone help me?
It's very rare to get the same speed during a speedtest and while downloading an actual file. It often has to do with the speed of the server you are downloading from. With a 1.2mb/s connection, 150kb/s isn't a bad download speed.

RV082 used dual wan download speed slow
Hi
I have a RV082 and I used dual wan , every ISP downstream is 10MB/s. two ISP downstream total 20Mb/s.Rv082 use loadblance mode, but total Lan PC download speed was 30kb/s-90kb/s,is very slowly .I find similar question inthe forum ,but i can not .please help me
thanksOk, several things here:
- Make sure that when you connect every individual LAN you get the full downstream speed.
- Make sure that it is not a PC problem, check with different PC's to see if the speed is the same on all of them.
- Download latest version of Firmware, you can get it from the cisco website, here is the link: http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/PlatformList.x?sftType=Small+Business+Router+Firmware&mdfid=282414011&treeName=&mdfLevel=null&url=null&modelName=Cisco+RV082+8-port+10%2F100+VPN+Router+-+Dual+WAN&isPlatform=N&treeMdfId=&modifmdfid=null&imname=&hybrid=Y&imst=N
- If you have to apply the new firmware make sure that you reste the device to factory defaults aftre the upgrade.
- Disable SPI under the firewall settings.
Hope this helps. -
Download Speeds slow on Mac, not on PC, Parallels or Bootcamp?
I recently switch from DSL to Cable because they offered higher speeds. I don't know if this affected DSL before because they only offered up to 2.5Mbps, the cable internet I'm on now is a 7Mbps/1Mbps line.
For the life of me, I cannot figure what is happening with my configurations. I have 2 PCs at home, a intel imac, and a macbook. When I run speedtests on dslreports or when I download large files from microsoft/apple, I get great speeds on my PCs. Around 880KB/s down. However, when I try to do the exact same thing on OSX, I get speeds around 260KB/s and it seems to be capped there.
The strange thing is that when I run parallels or boot camp, and try the exact downloads or speedtests I get the correct 7Mbps that I'm supposed to get. Am I doing something wrong with my configurations on OSX? It doesn't make sense that I can download in a window on OSX running paralles and get the fast speeds but thru OSX I cannot?
Both OS's are running Firefox. I've tried Safari and Camino on OSX and get the same results. I'm guessing its not a hardware problem because winxp on parallels and bootcamp get great speeds. This affects both my iMac and macbook. Any help would be appreciatedI have a 24megabit ADSL+2 connection and I had the same trouble as you.
When using Ubuntu or windows xp in parallels I had maximum uploads and downloads. But this was not the case in OSX.
My ftp uploads in osx were like 45k yet in ubuntu the were 120k to the same server.
I tried all sorts of methods to fix the problem.
But it turned out my problem was the router, I had a thompson/alcatel router a recent model.
I tried a cheap netgear adsl2+ router and bingo all my problems went away. I now have the same speeds in OSX and XP and Ubuntu. -
I am migrating my iTunes library from an XP box to a new Mini server. I have a cable connection running at 25 mpbs down and 15 mpbs up. When I initiate a download from iTunes store it frequently begins downloading in the 200k bps range and drops down to 50kbps. I have seen it drop as low as 7 bits per second. If I shut down and restart iTunes it sometimes comes up at 5 - 7 mbps and stays there. Other times it drops back down to less than 100kbps.
I have actually run speedtest.net and bandwidth speed test on the mini while it is downloading and seen 20 - 30 mbps. This is while the mini is downloading at 50kbps.
Any ideas or suggestions on how to address this issue?

Mac App Store download speed very slow...
I have been trying to download the App Store updates OS X Update 10.10.3 and OS X Yosemite Recovery Update to my iMac for the past several days. When opening the Mac App Store, I click on updates and they appear. However, when I select 'download' my download speed slows to the point of less than 1 MB per minute.
I seem to remember this happening when Yosemite was first released, but after a few days, I had no problem downloading Yosemite from the App Store.
This only occurs when trying to download from the Mac App Store. When I download iOS App updates to iTunes I do not have the same problem so it seems to be only affecting the Mac App Store.
My internet speed is fine. I can download fine from other websites, just not the Mac App Store.
After searching online, I found one solution that looked promising:
Finder->Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access->Preferences->Certificates->Certificate Revocation List- Changed from Best attempt to OFF.
Unfortunately for me this had no effect so I changed the setting back.
I then looked for a way I could download the files from outside the Mac App Store & found this:
Apple - Support - Downloads
When downloading from Apple Support downloads page, my downloads were very fast. The Yosemite 2 GB Combo update took about 15 minutes, a far cry from the App Store which would have taken hours.
Is there some setting I need to change to increase the download speed from the Mac App Store or is it just overloaded servers? Why then can I download the files from the support page and not run into the same slow speeds? Updating iTunes was also giving me very slow download speeds, so again, I went to the Apple Support Downloads & clicked the link to download the latest version of iTunes. The file downloaded in about a minute.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!Apple servers are overloaded. Instead of using App Store, use safari to download the updates manually from apple websites.
Here's a link for OS X 10.10.2 Combo Update.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
I had the same issue and downloaded manually from this link. It took me about 30-40 minutes. I'm using a 5mb connection. Your 40mb connection should be faster.
As for the iOS updates, you will have to download them from your iOS devices, because there are no standalone updates for iOS. Alternatively after you update your Mac, use iTunes to download iOS updates by connecting your iOS devices with your Mac. That should be faster than downloading through your iOS devices. -
Time Capsule as router slows download speeds
Hello,
Over the past couple of months I have been having intermittent internet connection issues where my download speeds slow down from 50mbps+ (Comcast) to under 1mbps, per speedtest.net
I assumed it was a Comcast issue and contacted their support several times. They sent a technician over who had the line reset and that seemed to fix the problems, but a couple of days later it was back. Contacting support again, they had me test the speeds connected directly to the modem (Motorola Surfboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0). Connected directly to the modem via Ethernet, I reliably get 50mbps+ download speeds, but using my 4th Gen Time Capsule as a wifi router slows the speeds down to under 1mbps.
After doing research on these and other forums and finding people with a similar issue, I ran the gamut of potential solutions: changing DNS servers, changing wifi bands and channels (2.4 and 5ghz, all chanels tested), changing Time Capsule firmware versions (7.6.3, 7.6.1, and 7.6 are the only versions available for my 4th Gen TC).
I eventually tested with an ethernet cable plugged into the Time Capsule and have the same frustrating issue when directly connected to the router, which means the issue is with the Time Capsule functioning as a router but isn't WiFi specific.
Upload speeds are a consistent 10mbps+ wether I'm connected directly to the modem or using the Time Capsule as a router, even when download speeds are slowed to a crawl.
I purchased my Time Capsule 1 year and 2 months ago, so I no longer have AppleCare for this purchase. I am out of troubleshooting ideas and am on the cusp of purchasing a second wifi router if I can't find a way to resolve my issue.
Thanks for your help!I can make a couple of suggestions..
You will need to install 5.6 utility on at least one computer.. if you don't have it available already.
1. Replace the ethernet patch cable from the modem to the TC.
2. What I want you to do is lock the speed of the TC WAN port to 100mbit full duplex.
This is only on the v5 utility.
Another method of doing the same thing is putting a small switch between the TC and the modem. Fast ethernet type would be best.. that will force the connection down to 100mbit.
You can also test with half duplex but that would indicate a major problem if it worked.
3. Make sure ipv6 is local link only.. there is no way to turn it off.
Having done those things.. I do note the TC lacks diagnostic and control tools in the firmware, to understand the issue. If those steps do not fix it is likely nothing will.
There is something fundamentally wrong in how the TC is handling routing.. maybe IPv6 getting in the way .. ?? Unfortunately there is simply not enough controls.
The fact that ethernet is affected in this way (though I would do the test with wireless off.. and ipv6 off in the computer as well).. there is little other choice but to get another router.
The TC can be relegated to bridged on the new router.. and still function fine for backup and wireless network for your local network.
If you have applecare on a computer it will still cover the TC.. but I think you may have issues proving the problem.. ie if you take it to apple it will work perfectly.. If you read this forum as I have done.. the SB61xx series modems seem to be a common factor. There is nothing wrong if you test to the modem from the computer but the SB Motorola modem and the TC are incompatible in some way.
I would like you to report the difference in gateway..
When you plug a computer directly to the modem..
Can you please do a copy and paste from Network preferences of the ip and gateway values.
ie this stuff.
Then I want you to get the same stuff out of the TC when it connects.
So we can compare the gateway (Router in applespeak) and if they are different.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.

Download Speed on PIX 515E is Pretty Slow
Hello, I have a PIX 515E set up between our office switch and our Comcast Business Router and the download speeds are not as fast as they should be. We are paying for 30 down 30 up but it's more like 10 down 30 up. I plugged in a computer directly into the router and got 30/30 so I know its not a comcast issue. I think it might be the low amount of memory on the PIX because its running at 109 out of a total 128mb. The PIX has a site-to-site VPN tunnel with a remote ASA 5520 firewall. The inside/outside ports are both auto/auto. The running config is only 161 lines.
Here's some information about the PIX 515E...

What are the uploads and downloads speeds
what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?
what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?
If you are asking about Internet download and upload speeds, this is limited by your service plan with your Internet provider.
It might be something like 10 Mbps download and 2 Mpbs upload, for example. That's because on most home plans, the download speeds are typically much faster than the upload speeds....unless you opt for a business type connection at significantly higher cost.
The Time Capsule is capable of much faster speeds than your service provider can ever deliver, so the bottleneck on your network will always be the Internet connection...not the Time Capsule.

Hi. I work with CS5 Photoshop more than any other software within Adobe's suite. Just wondering if I can purchase an upgrade from CS5 to CS6. At the moment all I can find is purchasing the CS6 for the full price. Thanks Michael
