3com 3c905B -- what kernel module?
hello
i try to configure my network, so my NW card is a (lspci output) :
3com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [cyclone] (rev 24)
now what kernel module do i have to load with modprobe? i can't find it out.
i tried to search google, and found a good page with modules for the kernel:
http://www.linuxforum.com/linux-kernel- … ml#AEN1419
but it seems like my NW card isn't listed there.
anyone who can help me?
thanks
sear
try the 3c59x module
or make your own kernel and make all modules from 3com network cards
if it is a isa card you should enable isa in your kernel and load the modules ....

What does the core crypto kernel module in IOS comprise off?
What does the core crypto kernel module in IOS comprise off? Basically trying to figure out if the new iphone & ipads are FIPS 140-2 compliant. (iphone 5 or 6 & ipad 3rd gen and above). Apple and NIST state that the Apple IOS core crypto kernel module v4.0 is validated FIPS 104-2 BUT what we don't know is that whether the core crypto kernel module covers the complete device or just some pieces and modules of the device ?

Doubtful anyone here would know that as we don't work for Apple and know nothing more than what Apple has made public in their FIPS documentation., -
[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
[edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
grub.cfg now looks like
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
# It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

It seems as if the lines you mentioned, Scimmia, have changed. I'll take that as a good sign.
[edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
[edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
[edit3] Successfully downgraded.
[edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

fglrx has just recently stopped working, and I can't quite pinpoint when that was because I honestly hadn't noticed until checking. I've tried a few reinstalls and different xorg options so far, but had no luck.

Would it be possible to explain the other warnings in Xorg.0.log? Rather curious about those apart from the obvious one, too.
Thanks.
Last edited by Newnux (2007-07-11 16:04:15)Indeed, that seems the end-all error of it all.
I'll summarise my warnings, some for curious reasons:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) # What's this?
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found # Not a problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Only one display is connnected,so single mode is enabled # No problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
Anyway, I wondered about versions and noticed this:
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.0
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] created "fglrx" driver at busid "PCI:1:0:0"
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xbc000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xbc000 to 0xb7285000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xbd000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit done
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
(II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.37.6
(II) fglrx(0): Date: May 25 2007
(II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver. # included to show where this was displayed
All versions previous to that show 8.38.6:
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
compiled for 7.1.0, module version = 8.38.6
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
So I assume I have an old version dotted around somewhere, but I'm not sure about how it's all loaded and such.
Now, quoting something I'd come across a few times and taking it from thinkwiki:
If you lose hardware acceleration after a driver update this can be caused by an old fglrx kernel module being loaded.
Check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a message like:
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
You can verify this yourself by looking at the version message some lines above. It should read something not matching the installed version like:
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
(II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.10.19
The cause for this trouble might be that there resist multiple versions of the fglrx module within the kernel module search path.
Go to /lib/modules/<your linux kernel version>/ and type # grep fglrx modules.dep.
If grep finds multiple lines you nailed down the problem. All you have to do now is to delete any versions of the module (look at the filedate) but the most current one. Then run # depmod and you are done.
Hint:
Newer versions (8.21.7) of the fglrx module seem to be installed in the extra/ subdirectory.
Older versions (8.19.10) used to be located in the kernel/drivers/char/drm/ subdirectory.
How does this apply to Arch? I only found one instance of fglrx by using that method.
Edit: Forgot to add that I've tried reinstalling a few times, it doesn't really seem to do anything. Wondering if I should attempt to install an older version or something, but I don't get why the driver numbers don't match for me. Surely others have updated their drivers too.

Trouble building kernel module for sensor support
Hi, I'm new here but have been using Arch for a while. Recently, I decided to install Arch on an old laptop (Toshiba A70) and have managed to work out most of the kinks to where it runs nicely. Unfortunately, ACPI support is spotty and the /sys/class/thermal directory gives me only cooling_device0. I installed the lm-sensors package and ran sensors-detect, which yielded no results. Although the laptop runs smoothly otherwise, I would like to know the CPU's temp so that I would be able to set up a fan control scheme and CPU scaling (so far it's stuck at the lowest frequency, and that's kind of a big deal for me since the laptop runs on an archaic mobile P4 chip).
Sorry for the story but I felt some context was necessary. I did manage to find a kernel module that would connect those sensors to ACPI for me (http://sourceforge.net/projects/omnibook/), however I'm having trouble building it on the latest kernel. Here is the output from running make:

Do you have any idea of what should be done to fix it? I don't want to use NVIDIA driver from their site neither nouveau, I want to use the one from the repo. If you know how to solve it, instead of only pointing the solution, also tell why this is happening, it will help me and other people with the same problem too!
If you need additional information please ask me.
Thanks!!

As it's mentioned, it may be a problem of ACPI.
About the lib32-nvidia-utils, I just installed because it's written in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing: "Note: On 64 bit systems, For 32-bit programs to take advantage of nvidia-utils you must also install the equivalent lib32 package (for example lib32-nvidia-utils)." -

Hmm... personally I would never run any command without understanding what it does, but it's your funeral, I guess.
Apart from that, are you sure larch is still compatible with Arch? It's nearly four years since the last update in the larch git repo, and as I'm sure you know, Arch changes frequently. I'd suggest you try to contact the developer directly. -
How to install tools to build a standard kernel module?
Hello!
I am a long time Fedora user trying to switch over to Arch for the ease of customization.
I am trying to build the hybrid_wl driver for my broadcom wireless card, and the requirements section says I need to have "the proper tools, packages, header files and libraries to build a standard kernel module. This is usually done by installing the kernel developer of kernel source package and caries from distro to distro."
I have never messed around with the kernel in Arch (or Fedora, for that matter) so I really have no clue what a standard module even is. What do I need to install to get this driver working?
Any help is welcome!
Thanks,

Running Solaris 8 compiled kernel module on Solaris 9
Hi,
I found some differences in the vnode definitions on S8 and S9. This
means a file system kernel module written on S8 would have to be recompiled to run on S9. From what I know, such a constraint did not exist when going from Solaris 7 to 8. Is it true? Has anyone faced a similar situation for device drivers?
Thanks.well I have tried it actually. and the behavior is weird. On my solaris 8 box. Every thing works perfectly fine. But due to some reason on solaris 10 machine the values i transmit over the tcp socket totally change. i send a msgCode = 1 , 2, or 3 ... but on the other end, which is a windows machine i get strange values 210, 10, 35 49 etc etc ... is this due to version problem.

Listing of All Linux Kernel Modules
I've been poking around, trying to find a list of all available Linux kernel Modules.. Does anyone know where such a list may be located?
Basically looking for something that gives the module name (like - nvidia) and then a quick explanation or description of it (like - nVidia Video Card Module).
If I find something, I'll stick it on the wiki; but thought someone may have already run across it somewhere.
thanks!!This will provide a list of modules
modprobe -c | less
An example output portion will look like this:
alias pci:v00001133d0000E00Bsv*sd*bc*sc*i* hisax
alias pci:v00001133d0000E005sv*sd*bc*sc*i* hisax
alias pci:v00001133d0000E004sv*sd*bc*sc*i* hisax
alias pci:v00001133d0000E002sv*sd*bc*sc*i* hisax
alias pci:v00001244d00000A00sv*sd*bc*sc*i* hisax
alias pcmcia:m*c*f*fn*pfn*paD79E0B84pb21D083AEpc*pd* sedlbauer_cs

alias pcmcia:m*c*f*fn*pfn*pa81FB79F5pbE4E9BC12pc8DB143FEpd* sedlbauer_cs
To get information on what each module does
yum -y install kernel-doc --This will install the kernel documentation to /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-*/Documentation (* is the version of the kernel you are using)
If we wanted to get info on the 'hisax' module
cd /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-*/Documentation
grep -R -i hisax * --This will list any docs on the module, in this case will find that it is a driver for a Siemens ISDN card -
How do I install / update a specific kernel module?
Hi
I'm trying to update an existing kernel module. I can download it and it comes with a pretty easy to use Makefile based on http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation … odules.txt. The Makefile installs the newly created module into /lib/modules/$kernelversion/extra. I have some questions regarding this behavior:
* The Makefile creates a *.ko whereas arch uses compressed *.ko.gz modules. Do I have to compress the built module before installing it?
* Is the default install path (/extra) right? What about the module that already exists in /kernel/drivers/xxxx? Should I leave the new one in extra and remove the old one, or just replace the old one directly (backup not withstanding)?
Regards,
canNever heard of the /extra dir in this context. AFAIK the correct way to do this is to place the updated module in /lib/modules/$kernelversion/updates (create the updates dir if it's not already there). This way, the older version remains in place, but the version in /updates takes precedence.

VBox Guest Additions Kernel Modules
Hey, semi-literate Linux user/Arch n00b here. I apologize in advance as I realize that this issue has been addressed in this forum previously, but after several hours of hunting, I have yet to find a proper solution. I am trying to run Arch64 as a guest in VirtualBox (host is Ubuntu 10.10, x86-64 if it matters). I have the system up and running, but I can't seem to get the Guest Additions going, as the system won't build the kernel modules. This is the terminal output while running the installer:
Uncompressing VirtualBox 3.2.6 Guest Additions for Linux........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 3.2.6 of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
:: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules [FAIL]
Your system does not seem to be set up to build kernel modules.
Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong. Once you have corrected it, you can
run
/etc/init.d/vboxadd setup
to build them.
:: Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions [DONE]
:: Installing the Window System drivers [BUSY]
:: Installing X.Org Server 1.8 modules [DONE]
:: Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions [DONE]
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart
the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.
:: Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components [DONE]
And this is the output of the log file:
Makefile:23: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again.. Stop.
Creating user for the Guest Additions.
Creating udev rule for the Guest Additions kernel module.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Guest additions for VirtualBox 4.0.4 are broken, in several ways. Try a newer build for them:

It's working OK for me, while with the regular 4.0.4 additions I had numerous crashes on my XP guest. -

Dear Arch Community,
I have some issues loading a kernel module. Namely tp_smapi. I myself have never loaded kernel modules before, so I guess I just missed something basic. Here is what I did:
I followed the wiki to install it:
$ sudo pacman -S tp_smapi
and restarted my computer. Yet, the promissed directory to occur did not do so:
$ ls /sys/devices/platform/smapi
ls: cannot access /sys/devices/platform/smapi: No such file or directory
I noticed that some files mentioned by other users don't exist on my system, e.g.
/etc/modules-load.d/tp_smapi.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
Also, systemd reports the following:
$ systemctl list-units
UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
systemd-modules-load.service loaded failed failed Load Kernel Modules
So, what is it that I might not have taken care of?
Thank you,
Tetrapilottetrapilot wrote:
@ #2: Well, my model actually does not appear on the list. However, this page suggests, that it does work anyway. (I really want the feature, so I hope that I (the user) is the problem here.)
So, the suggested commands tell me, that the desired module seems not to exist on my system:
# modprobe -a tp_smapi
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'tp_smapi': No such device or address
# journalctl -b | grep "tp_smapi"
Jan 14 15:51:30 hostname systemd-modules-load[144] Failed to insert 'tp_smapi': no such device or adress
However, it is installed:
$ pacman -Q tp_smapi
tp_smapi 0.41-11
I did some more research and found that this kind of error massages indeed occurs for unsupported systems. So, bad luck for me.
Your error does indeed indicates that the module can't find the relevant *hardware*, so messing around with the module loading probably wonæt help. You could check the bios if the feature is disabled there though. Another thing you can try, if the module simply check some product id, is to add the id for your hardware. Else I would suggest poking upstream to get the hardware supported.

I am having trouble getting the kernel to recognize the raid drivers which my card uses. The install of arch is fresh. The raid card is a HighPoint RocketRaid 2300. I browsed the AUR and found a PKGBUILD for an older version of the driver written by LoneWolf. I updated it to fit my needs.
The PKGBUILD I have is:
# Contributor: LoneWolf --Edited by Vitechy

pkgver=2.1
pkgrel=3
pkgdesc="Kernel modules for Highpoint RocketRAID 230x and 231x SATA cards"

mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${_kernver}/kernel/drivers/scsi/
cd $startdir/src/rr231x_0x-linux-src-v2.5/product/rr2310pm/linux/

mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/share/licenses/$pkgname
cp $startdir/src/rr231x_0x-linux-src-v2.5/README $startdir/pkg/usr/share/licenses/$pkgname/
The post install script I used is:
# This is a default template for a post-install scriptlet. You can
# remove any functions you don't need (and this header).
# arg 1: the new package version
pre_install() {
/bin/true
# arg 1: the new package version
post_install() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
# arg 1: the new package version
# arg 2: the old package version
post_upgrade() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
# arg 1: the old package version
post_remove() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
op=$1
shift
$op $*
Executing the PKGBUILD with the makepkg command creates a .pkg.tar.gz file. Installing the package with pacman -U nameofpackage.pkg.tar.gz reports that the package has been installed. Running pacman -Qs reports that there is a package, local/rr231x-0x on the system.
The raid card is still not functioning. Instead of seeing a raid array I see the individual HDD's which are connected to the raid card which is something I could see even before running makepkg. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have rebooted the PC but that has done nothing. Also running modprobe rr230x_0x or modprobe rr2310_00 returns FATAL:Module rr230x_0x/rr2310_00 not found.
Any help is appreciated.
Zlatan
PS. The md5sums in the PKGBUILD example I provided above is not the same one as the one in the PKGBUILD which is actually compiling on the server. The PKGBUILD above I recited from memory; however, I do not remember the actual number which I obtained by running makepkg -g. I will update as soon as I have access to the server again. I have updated the PKGBUILD above to exactly match the one im using on the server.
Last edited by Vitechy (2010-09-21 02:00:13)Oh, wow I didn't even notice that.
Modprobe was able to load the modules now; however, now I see the HDD's and the raid array. In other words running fdisk -l shows all of the HDD's connected to the raid card, /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc as well as the raid array /dev/sdd.
The raid array has not finished building, so is it a possibility that that is why it is showing up. I will post updates when the raid array has finished initializing.
