3D Animation in CS4 problem or normal?

I'm just wondering if animating a 3D object in PS CS4 is exceptionally slow or if I'm doing something wrong...
Win7 Pro, 6-core 980X, 24G RAM...Production Premium CS4. I shut off all the Aero stuff before I opened Photoshop.
I took a relatively small jpg (1200x800) and ran the 2-sided plane filter. I keyframed the initial 3D position (rotation only) then rotated 90 degrees on X and keyframed the new 3D rotation at 5 seconds. Two keyframes on the timeline. To preview the animation... well I couldn't because after 5 minutes only 3 frames were cached.
Is this behavior to be expected?
I realize PS isn't exactly the first choice for animating 3D objects but since the filters are there I figure Adobe must intend us to use them...
Thanks for any thoughts you can share...
btw - is animating 3D objects any better in CS5?
Thanks again!

well I couldn't because after 5 minutes only 3 frames were cached.
Errrm... 3D rendering in final quality is a time-consuming process even in dedicated 3D programs. Some frames on cinematic movies render for hours or days even. So in that light, having to wait is pretty much normal, especially at larger resolutions. I'm afraid you won't find the key to happiness if you expect anything in 3D to be realtime, much less in PS. You should simply get used to things taking time and not being "previewable" otehr than the rough OpenGL stuff. Even in programs like Lightwave, modo or anything that uses Mental Ray's iRay you will still see some delay even in their adaptive preview renderers, something which PS simply doesn't have. And even there things are dictated by the actual render resolution, antialiasing quality, reflections, refractions, soft shadows vs. hard shadows and whatnot. Far too complex a matter to answer in a single post. So to summarize: You may play with teh quality settings and create a lower res document for previewing, but otehrwise you are seeing something that is normal. And things aren't better in CS5, just different.

  • Extend time in Timeline of imported 3D object for animation in CS4?

    Hello guys,
I have very strange problem with CS4 and imported either 3DS or OBJ files:
When I open 3DS or OBJ file, lets say - a car object, I draw some dirty textures over it and then open Animation window and want to animate
it by simple rotation. When I open animation window with timeline, I then go to pull-down menu to the right and open Document Settings.
Then I set time from default 3:10 seconds animation lenght to 10:00 seconds, for example, and set playback speed from 30 to 25fps.
But then - I can NOT extend manually timeline of selected object I want to animate. It is FIXED to 3:10 seconds.
Is it a bug and how to avoid it?
My solution was - to open this object into 3D Studio Max and then in its time line set from 100 frames to lets say - 500 frames animation lenght and then save back again, but this is very slow operation and requires full working 3D Studio that my firm do not have...
Any ideas about how to extend time in animation timeline of imported 3D objects for animating in CS4?
    Thank you very much.
    n.

You did not look down far enough. Below them are some layers in blue (or other solid color) Twirl down the one that says 3D Meshes. Click on the small stopwatch for the object move your playhead ahead in time then rotate your mesh. The easiest way to rotate the mesh is using the text fields in the mesh's properties.

  • CS4 Problems on new iMac

    1. I installed CS4 on my new iMac running Mavericks. I ran the updater but the updater can't update itself ("couldn't access disc image") so now I can't update any of the CS4 components. Help!
    2. My RAW files (imported from my previous Mac using Time Machine) all appear as unconverted DNG files. I'd like to avoid spending hours converting them all again. Is this a CS4 problem or maybe a Mac problem? Should I restore my photo library from Time Machine again, now that I've installed CS4? Any ideas on solving these problems would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  • Problem on Normalized Frequency to original analog frequency

I'm having a problem regarding normalized frequency.
The Sine wave .vi, says that the input to the frequency  must be a normalized frequency. What I did is tha I divide my frequency to the number of samples.
However, when I attached Tone Measurements to output signal of the sine wave, I'm not having a frequency of what i set.
In my example my input frequency is 60 Hz however what was detected by the tone measurement was the normalized frequency which is 0.06.
How do I modify this VI, in order that i will have a frequency in 60 hZ,

The problem with trying to calculate a frequency is that you need a time element.  You don't have a time element.  So I'm thinking 1 sample/second is used.
Try using the Sine Wave.vi (it is in the Signal Processing->Waveform Generation palette).  With that function, you need to supply the sample rate and the actual frequecy that you want.

  • Can't Apply Filters to an Animation in CS4

I just created a 144 frame animation on CS4, and, horror of horrors, when I went back after the fact to start applying filters (brushstrokes and gaussian blur in particular, though none are working) to my frames, all of the filters were grayed out. Is there a way to fix this issue, or will I have to do all of my frames over again?
    Thanks!

ugh - made such a mess - shot orchids on black background with texture but couldn't get the selection right so though I would have a clipping path made and then turn that into selection. but then I had to make changes to the orchid so the path wasn't quite right.
at any rate I'm back to the original - have made the corrections to the flowers and am now trying to refine the selection so I don't have a black line around the orchids when I use a layer to lighten the background, but also don't loose the stem which is dark and hard to select. - sorry for the confusion.

  • Photoshop/Bridge CS4 problem with AFP shares

    Hello,
I have recently purchased Photoshop CS4 and encountered the following problem: when opening images from a NAS share connected via AFP using File/Open command, Photoshop will correctly display the list of files but Open command in the File open dialog remains disabled after a file is selected from the list. However, I can open the same file by dragging and dropping it from the Finder to the Photoshop Dock icon or later using the Open recent menu command.
Similar problem is visible in Bridge: it will not display the image thumbnails from any of the subfolders in the network share.
I am using Leopard with the latest updates, I have a read/write permissions to the network share and Photoshop/Bridge are the only applications that have problems browsing/opening files from the network share. The NAS unit is a Synology DS-107+ with the latest official firmware.
Futhermore, I have noticed that I can work around the problem by opening the same directory in Finder. After the image thumbnails are visible in Finder, both Photoshop and Bridge will correctly open all files in that directory but opening files from other directories still has the problem.
Does anyone have any idea on what might be causing this strange problem?

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Elements 8.0 and Adobe Bridge CS4 problem

I have two problems that appeared in Elemens 8.0 and Adobe Brigde CS4 recently.  I'm using the Mac version and a Macbook Pro (4 months old).
I don't really know where to address the problem, but I hope someone in this forum would be able to advice me.
    Problem 1
When I browse a RAW-file in Bridge and click the photo to view a 100% zoom and then go back to a normal view, after a few seconds the photo turns alot darker.  I've got alot of macro photos of flower and they really loose structure in this process and I would say they get damaged.
On the attached file the left photo is the photo I've viewed and closed and the right one is the original file.  Does anyone have an explanation to this problem?  I do like to review my files and do a 100% zoom before I choose the best one, but this is not possible in Bridge due to this problem.
    Problem 2
After postprocessing my photos in Elements some of them cannot be viewed through Brigde anymore, they get sort of unclear and some show pixels.  If I use Finder or other programmes to view the files they look perfectly allright. See examples below, the left one is a screendump from Bridge and the second one is the processed file.

I think this solved the problem, at least some of it.
I deleted the bridge plist file and also ran an update of Bridge CS4.  I wasn't sure how to update ACR in bridge, so I didn't do that.
But when I start Bridge now, only some of the files changes color slightly in the thumbnails view.  The zoom (loading 100%) also looks different, it zoomed to 800% earlier even though it said 100%, it sort of never ended.
Thank you Barbara, I'm ever so grateful.  Now I know where to go if I have more problems

  • CS4 Problem with Acrobatinfo.exe

I'm having a really obnoxious problem with CS4 (as far as I can tell, every part of it, tested with InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator and Photoshop).
Every time I open an Adobe application and every 30 second to 3 minutes thereafter, my system hangs for a few seconds, with stuttering screen updates and then the whole screen flickers with a greenish tinge and then goes back to normal.
I've managed to track down the problem to the process Acrobatinfo.exe. Once I started watching the tack manager, I noticed that, without fail, each hang and flicker was preceeded by about 15 seconds of Acrobatinfo.exe starting, sitting around and then peaking at 50% CPU (all of one core/processor I imagine). Shortly after that, the process closes and everything is good again for another few minutes.
System is Windows XP, SP3. 2GB of RAM (and this happens even if nothign else is running). All windows and video card drivers are completely up to date.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?
    Thanks
    Tom

After over 10 hours of pain, I've finally solved this problem. It was the Adobe Improvement Program.
I discovered this after noticing that none of the other accounts on this computer had the problem I was having, so after hours of painfully rebuilding my profile from scratch and testing as I went, Acrobat asked if I'd like to join the program.
The second I signed up the same flickering and hangs started up again, and as soon as I said "no !@#$@#!$ thank you" it fixed the problem.
Apparently declining to join the program just on Acrobat set a global setting, as none of the other CS4 apps exhibited any slowdowns after that.
I am livid at the time I wasted tracking down this ridiculous bug, and hopefully this provides some help to others who experience similar problems.

  • CS4 Error on  Normal Exit

Whenever I perform a normal Exit of PS CS4, I receive the error message; 'Adobe has detected that the application Adobe Photoshop CS4 has unexpectedly quit.' Is there any known cause / fix for this? (running OSX 10.6).
    Thanks

I had the same problem, PS CS4 on Mac crashes upon exit.  Cause seems to be related to preferences and started happening shortly after 10.6 upgrade.
You will need to restore the preferences.
If you have a timemachine backup and can remember when it was stable, - then restore:  <~User Home Directory> Library > Preferences >Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings and restore all of the files.  I had a laptop with a good set of preferences so I just copied them over.
If that is not available you will need to reset the preferences back to defaults by simply renaming the 'Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings' directory and starting PS.  It will then re-create them.
If for some reason you still have the problem, then there is an article on the adobe support site  you should find.  They suggest looking at 'add-ins' next.
    Good Luck

  • Premiere Pro CS4 - Problem with the monitor program.

Hi. I'm not able solving problems with the monitor using PremiereProCS4. When I drag a photo (also only one photo) in the timeline and play it in the monitor program, vision in the monitor program doesn't run:black monitor or a little part of the photo appear... sometimes distort colours. Asus P5QPRO, Intel 9550 and Sparkle Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 1024 DDR3; last gpu driver and directX are installed. Different configuration of stratch disks were tested. Where am I wrong?

    Dear Bill,
thanks for your answer and your article. I tried with your NTSC 4:3 720x480 PAR 0.9 and, "magically", no more problem!!! I used the script pocedure in Photoshop CS4 to resize my images. Now, before starting my workflow and hoping not to overuse your patience, I would like to indicate you my equipment and my target: I use a Canon Eos 7D (generally for still images, 90% are vertical, and just some videos) and I use Premiere Pro CS4 to burn a dvd (normal, 4.7 Gb or double side, more than 8 Gb) with a 16.9 lcd tv (I'm Italian); my camera save as .jpg and .raw (but why use heavy .raw files if I've to redute to 720x480?!??).
So, according to your "everyone wants the highest quality that they can obtain when doing theri videos..." and "your video project may vary, so you will need to plug in the dimensions for YOUR video project in that case", I've a question: which is the best for me?
    And then:
1 - Premiere Pro CS4 havn't a batch or a script procedure for still image like PS (only for videos)!?!
2 - Premiere does'nt allow you to import images like 4.181 Kb (a too large dimension file error appears)!
3 - In the timeline of Premiere, after you dragged images, you can select them and right click to perform "resize to frame size": it seems to run good without problem, but what appen to the photo? Which is it's pixel?
4 - In the general preferences of Premiere you can to optimize rendering for "memory" or not: which is the best for you?
5 - I attached file with a screen of something strange in Premiere: dragging an image (the first of the project) in the timeline, the timeline appears distort (you can see the part in the yellow square): then, when I render the project and play in the monitor program, it becames normal.
    Thanks!

  • CS5 Encore Animated Menu Rendering Problem

Anybody who could help! I am still experimenting but haven't find the solution (either very simple, or a serious bug ). Here is the problem: If I do any edit on the menu after setting the poster frames and/or inserting a motion (avi) or still (wav) background and re-render the menu, it plays the audio but shows the highlights only on a black background. Before rendering, all the (non-moving) background and/or the button pictures can be seen. For a simple experiment, I use the  "NTSC Blank Menu" from the "General" Set in the Library panel with the "Drive-in Video Button". My only solution at this point is to start from the beginning with the Blank Menu and copy everything from the non-functioning menu, and insert the background and/or the button pictures (via the poster frame selection), but do not touch anything at this point, and render it, it works as it supposed to. I checked the layers in Photoshop and there is no difference between the functioning and non-functioning menu layer sets. (It points to the animation part as a possible culprit in Encore.) Also, I couldn't find any way to just remove/reinsert the background/button pictures and make it work. This might even be a quirk only with this menu? I would greatly appreciate any suggestion. - Laci.

    Hi LaciG,
I just encountered the same problem tonight. So I knew exactly what you were refering to.  I tried several approaches to work around this issue including erasing the motion menu background source file and re-importing in and starting the menu from scratch again and neither worked.  Eventually I did find a work around here it goes:  First I erased the buggy menu and motion menu source file (AVI).  Next  I copied the whole Encore project file and renamed it.  Then I copied and renamed the avi file I used as the motion menu.  After this I went in and used the template menu I originally used but renamed it in the asset list.  Like you said when ever you mess with the menu like changing the chapter timeline poster or such, it messes up the render.  So I made sure everything was the way it needed to be then added the AVI to the motion menu.  I re-rendered and it worked.  I know this is convoluted but it works, I guess this a good start but I may work on finding out what specific step it was in the process that did it.  I had a similar problem in CS4 but could never figure out how to fix it and now that I have Windows 7 using CS4 Encore was a nightmare so I switched to CS5 and ran into the same bug as you. Well I hope this helps

  • Can't figure out how to make a graphic expand in an animated gif (CS4)

I'm trying to make an animated gif where two of my graphics expand to the outer edges of the picture. However all that I can manage to accomplish is to have the opacity fade in or out. Is it possible to make a graphic expand in CS4?
    Thanks for any help!

I'm not very familiar with animation using Photoshop. I have a small amount of experience using Illustrator, but not much. I'm not sure what a normal timeline is.
What I'm trying to do should be very simple. I want to emulate a tv screen flickering on, using 2 white bars that expand outwards from the center of a blackish background.

  • Edit in CS4 Problem.

For some reason when I right click on a an image in LR and go to edit in photoshop I don't get any options anymore like I used to .It opens in CS4 as a raw file and not a tiff. I haven't changed anything. Does anyone know why?
It's a problem because now when I want to brush in some adjustments via Nik's vivenza etc. plug-ins-I can't-just like if I open it as a smart object from LR.
    Thanks.

That has been the case ever since LR 2.0. You will only get the dialog when you open a non-RAW file. When you edit a RAW file, it will always open it directly. It will use it's own ACR to render into a 16-bits prophoto standard tiff file (the default, change it in LR preferences). The title is just a temporary tag until you save the file in Photoshop, which is when it will change automatically into .tif. In the contextual menu in Lightroom you should also be able to choose whether you want a smart object or a normal file to be opened. If your plugins don't work, it probably has nothing to do with Lightroom. Do these plugins not support 16-bit files?

  • Serious CS4 Problem Lounge

I wanted to share unexpected and unseen problem I experience with my Photoshop cs4 trial - permanently.
And I remarkably hope that someone of you guys will be able to give some advice how to overcome this:
When I OPEN A PHOTOGRAPHY IT DEFACES IT IN SOME KIND OF GEOMETRICAL COLOR AND PIXEL SQUARES which change their look depending on zoom level.
And only passing >200% bound it starts to depict picture normally.
Basically program itself works fine - it doesn't slow down computer and completes all tasks in no time, so I don't think it could be a hardware problem (my 32 bit Windows Vista based machine is far above minimal sys req; my video card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600).
Maybe some sort of drivers or updates could resolve this?
    But where to get one?

that's nice robert, but it has nothing to do with this topic. :)
klavs, I agree with bart. it COULD be bad ram...
( Chris Cox - 01:17pm Feb 7, 2003 Pacific (#7 of 15) -If you zoom in and they go away, it's probably the video card. -If you zoom in and out and they change, it's probably bad RAM. )
but as there's loads of new stuff related to the video card in cs4, definitely update your video drivers before you go crazy looking for bad RAM sticks.
    >Maybe some sort of drivers or updates could resolve this?
yes, try that first. if it doesn't fix it, you must consider RAM, as that behavior has been a symptom for a long time...
    >But where to get one?
    i'd start here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
you may need to hit a slightly different site if you're not USA based. if so, start at http://www.amd.com , select your region then look for support and drivers.
