3D capable computer

I have a 20" iMac and I also have Windows Vista separately with Boot Camp. In light of the recently aired Golf Masters in 3D, does anyone know if this iMac of mine (2007) or any others can support 3D viewing? Since the 3D is being offered online only to Windows Vista and Windows 7 and not to Apples, it would be cool to see if it was supported. I guess I could try it and get back to you unless I'm wasting my time trying to download these 3D players and getting glasses. This is something I have never heard of so, anyone? If you don't know what I'm talking about don't bother responding. There is all the info at Masters.com/3D

Hi Tiery,
all those 3D-display/-glasses solutions mentioned there are using a display frequency of 120Hz.
To my knowledge no Mac internal or external display is capable of 120Hz.
So therefor you would have to buy one the there mentioned 3D-display/glasses solutions.
Secondly not all Nvidia graphics cards are compatible with their solution. Only Geforce series 8 and above are.
For me that leads to the point that if your iMac doesn't have a compatible graphics card, you are out of luck anyway.
If your graphics card is compatible, you have to buy at least one the mentioned 3D-display/glasses and use this with BootCamp Windows.
Not sure if all this effort is worth it.
regards
Stefan

  • Why does my performance stink, despite having a more-than-capable computer?

    My specs:
    2008 Mac Pro, OS 10.8.5
2 x 2.8GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Processors
    12GB 800 MHz DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 w/1500 MB VRAM
    1TB Hard Drive, 700GB open
Despite this, Final Cut Pro X is runnig like real jag. 3-4 times per minute it freezes for 3-10 seconds in order to sort something out, and it's even worse if I'm trying to preview titles or import audio files. I have turned off background rendering, I'm not using proxy clips, it's set to "Performance" rather than "Quality", and if I look at Activity Monitor while I'm using it, the whole computer is using about 20% of the total processing power and half the RAM. The temperature is holding steady at 90 degrees farenheit.
The project I'm editing has no effects, a few titles, and isn't even proper HD footage. I think it's 480i.
Any idea what gives? This seems a little ridiculous.

It is impossible to tell for sure. Performance of FCP X depends on a lot of factors, like CPU, GPU, RAM, Hard Drive, other programs that may be running, etc. 12GB of RAM should be plenty enough, unless you are running a lot of other things at the same time. Keep Activity Monitor open and see how much free RAM you have. If the slowness coincides with low free RAM, then quitting other programs and quitting and relaunching FCP X will help. But if there is plenty of free RAM, it is likely the cause lies elsewhere; then the drive becomes the likeliest suspect.
The system drive is used by the OS all the time, and that is the reason one should expect better performance from a separate drive (provided that the drive connection is fast: usually a second or third internal, if possible; for most users (i.e. those who do not have a Mac Pro) that would mean Thunderbolt, USB3 or FW800 in decreasing order of preference). But of course there is no guarantee because there may be something else on your system, possibly software, inducing these slowdowns.

  • Want to enhance wifi strength - router in one room, wifi capable computer in another

I need to enhance the wifi signal in my home in order to utilize a wifi ready computer on another floor. The wifi indicates 2 out of 5 bars on the wifi indicator, but frequently loses the signal completely. I have several coaxial ports around the house and have heard that there is an old school Motorola device out there that I can use to boost the wifi signal.
I am using the router in the room where the fios wire enters the residence and want to leave it there....any suggestions?

The "old school Motorola" device is MoCA bridge.  It will provide an Ethernet port active on your LAN anywhere you have coax.  You'd then need to plug a WiFi access point or router into the Ethernet port.
Or, you could pickup an old Actiontec WiFi router online and use it as a single bridge and access point.
There are lots of discussions of how to do this in these forums.  Spend some time searching and looking around and you'll find them.

  • Burn downloaded videos and replay on different computer?

I am a sailor currently serving over in the Persian Gulf. I am also missing all of my TV shows while over here. I have been deployed since September 13th, so that is the latest version of iTunes I have. Does anybody know if it is possible to have someone at home (dad or g/f) purchase and download some episodes from iTunes and burn them on to a disc and send it to me? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you have a computer with iTunes 7 that can be connected to the Internet at least long enough for it to obtain the authorization from the iTunes Store, then yes, they could copy the videos to a data DVD and send it to you. You'd copy them into your iTunes library (dragging them to the iTunes window is easiest), then when you go to play them, you'll be asked for the user ID and password for the iTunes Store account through which the videos were purchased.
Videos purchased from the iTunes Store cannot be converted to video DVD, so if you don't have an iTunes-capable computer, then it wouldn't be possible.
    Hope this helps.
Please accept my thanks for your serivce, stay safe, and you and all of your fellow sailors come home soon.

  • How can I move Snow Leopard mail POP messages on one computer to a Mountain Lion Computer

After seeing my iPad3 up close, my friend bought one so he could read his email while watching TV downstairs.  But that's when we discovered his iMac was processor-limited and couldn't accept LION (and the CLOUD)...  In an effort to "get a computer on the cloud", he bought a used Lion-capable computer and attempted to use his Time Machine to bring the newer computer up to speed.  All's well, except that he can't seem to move several hundred old (but important) messages to the new computer.  Appears that the Snow Leopard backup on Time Machine can't do the job.  I'm embarrassed that I didn't catch the failure to put iCloud on his computer and am a tad bit frustrated trying to get my arms around the problem...  Need some help.

    Some things to try:
    1. Go to Applications>Utilities>Migration Assistant and try remigrating the User Account with the mail messages from the Time Machine backup.
    OR
    1. On the old computer, copy the contents of the Mail folder (Library>Mail) for the user to a USB memory stick or similar. On the new computer, select and drag the contents of the Mail folder to the Trash. DO NOT EMPTY THE TRASH!
    2. Quit the Mail program on the new computer.
    3. Use the files on the memory stick to replace the files you dragged to the Trash in Step 2.
    4. Launch the Mail program on the new computer.
    5. If the program doesn't work "correctly" or starts doing unexpected things, use the files that are in the Trash to replace the files you copied over in Step 3.

  • What are the differences between a 2nd generation Airport Extreme and a 5th generation other than dual band capability?

I have a 2nd generation and want to replace it with a 5th generation. Will it be worth it? Other than the dual band capability of the 5th gen, what is the advantage?

The 2nd Gen AirPort will support wireless speeds up to about 270-300 Mbps. The 5th Gen will go up to 400-450 Mbps.
But, not sure why you are looking at a 5th Gen AirPort when the Gen 6 runs circles around the Gen 5 in terms of speed capability and antenna performance. The 6th Gen antennas are up at the top of the tower for significantly better transmission capability and there are more of them as well.
With an "ac" capable computer the 6th Gen will get up to 900-1,000 Mbps. Otherwise, it will come in at 400-450 Mbps with a fairly up to date Mac.
The 6th Gen would be, and is a "no brainer" for me over the 5th Gen, but you may have your reasons.
Apple tends to introduce new models in June of most years, so if you are not in a rush, you will likely have an even better offering soon.

  • Suggestion to Apple: Animated GIF's in mail.

[Note: I would prefer to not hear one response from an apple user stating "animated gifs are ugly I'm glad it doesn't work." I too hate them, but read on...]
I recently helped a family of PC users switch to a Pentium iMac. I do their tech support and this has made my life SO much easier
The wife loves sending stupid little animated gifs back and forth to her friends... it's not for us to judge if they're ugly or annoying, they like them. Period.
I am so ashamed to have to go to her when I return her computer today and say "I'm sorry, this awesome and capable computer I have set you up with is unable to play back simple Animated GIF's.
I trust in Apple... playing back an animated gif should NOT be a major security threat. Make it work. Of course I could switch her back to Thunderbird but then that breaks her Address Book as well.

If her friends are using Outlook Express, then it should work. Here is an excerpt from:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-19275.html
    a) Apple Mail can embed animated Gifs in Mime Format Mails, but it doesn't show them animated itself! This means if you send such a Mail to a user with e. g. Outlook Express, he will see the Gif with it's animation, although Apple Mail didn't show it!
    b) Even more interesting is this: when a user with Outlook Express sends you an Mail with embeded animated Gif, Apple Mail also shows the animation! Why is this, you may ask? It's because Outlook Express sends the Mail as HTML with MIME Attachment and also does a URL "CID:" reference in the HTML code to the actual embeded animated Gif! Quite nifty!
    --- End Quote ---
You can read the site for more information.
The other option is to just use MS-Entourage.
Entourage can synchronize with Apple's Address Book. And, it's naturally going to have support built-in for Microsoft's methods.
As for making suggestions to Apple, you'll get better results by making the request to Apple directly.
They don't comb this discussion forum for ideas. And, tend to ignore what we say here.
So, go to their actual feedback page, and submit your request there:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
At least then you know someone at Apple will actually read it.
There's no guarantee that they'll implement your request. But, you'll have a better chance if you submit your requests there.
Like all requests, the more people that want it, the more likely it will be added. So, get all your friends to request the feature if you want it.
Obviously, if the request comes repeatedly from the same person, they'll probably grow tired of it, and quit reading your requests. But, if several distinctively different people ask for something, they are very likely to consider it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Seriously Apple, why can't Leopard render a transparent menu bar on my Mac?

I have a 2-year-old PowerBook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard 10.5.2 freshly updated today. I thought for sure I'd get to see a translucent menu bar but, no, still opaque as ever with no option to change.
Apple, let me tell you some of the things this pretty capable computer can do:
-Dynamically render transparency and reflections in a magnifying Dock
-Dynamically render transparency in Terminal windows with varying levels of transparency
-Render GPU-intensive animations such as Genie effect, rotating cube, and dashboard "splash"
-Hey, I can even boot into Linux, run Gnome, and make it's menu bar transparent!
Please stop telling me my computer is not compatible enough to display a translucent menu bar. Displaying the transparency in the menu bar has got to be one of the least intensive operations Leopard will do. It is a static image (save for seldom changing menu items) that rarely needs to be re-rendered. Terminal windows, however, get resized, dragged around and display their transparency beautifully.
Let's get some straight answers as to why this simple issue of getting a Transparent menu bar consistently displayed (ot not displayed, by choice) across all of your "compatible" hardware is such a confusing mystery.
Thanks for fixing the Stacks, at least.

Thanks for your input. While you may not mind a solid menu bar, I quite like it and would like to have one. My main gripe however, is the fact that this really just seems like some bug that Apple isn't willing to focus on, or admit to.
They say the graphics card can render "most effects" but not the menu bar. But, seriously, as I've mentioned before, why can it render transparent drop-down menus, transparent Terminal windows, transparent/reflective Dock, Dashboard ripple effect but not a simple, basic, transparent menu?
Once I get a decent answer to this, I'll be satisfied. Because right now, telling me my 64MB graphics card can't handle it seems like a load of bulls**t.

  • Windows Vista and iTunes just don't get along!

    Everyone,
I'm having some serious issues with iTunes 7.6 and Windows Vista Ultimate. This is on a new capable computer, with a vista system rating of 5.1. Newest device drivers and windows updates are installed.
Problem #1- iTunes takes forever to start up. At least 30 seconds, sometimes a full minute. During this time, there is very little HDD activity, processor usage is under 4%, and the system responds quickly to other requests. Other applications and games have to issues with startup, only iTunes.
Problem #2- Occasionally, the iTunes window becomes black. If I then hit the start button on the keyboard, the iTunes window becomes normal again, but it is quite annoying.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? Any resolutions?

I'm going to group 1, 2, and 3 together, and assume it sounds as if the iBook hasn't been authorized for use with your iTunes Store account. In iTunes, click on your Store menu (at the top of the screen) and click Authorize Computer. Enter the information used to make your purchases and click Authorize. Once it says it's successful, see if you can play the songs in iTunes first. If so, go ahead and try to get them onto the iPod (whichever method you prefer). If they still don't play, please repost with the error message you receive so we can be of better assistance.
Number 4 sounds like it may be normal behavior... example: If you have 10 songs in your Music library and you Autofill the iPod with all of them, and go back to the iPod's Contents and manually delete 5 of them, then add 3 more songs to your library and Autofill the iPod again from your Music library, you'll end up with all 13 songs on your iPod again. Let me know if you're able to follow what I'm saying... I almost wasn't :P

  • I have a Windows Vista desktop and an old XP laptop, both run Firefox perfectly. However, my Toshiba Satellite T135 laptop will not run ANY version of Firefox--constant "not responding" messages. Chrome and IE9 work perfectly. Help!!

To mostly repeat my question, I am a longtime Firefox user on both an XP laptop and a Vista desktop. So here I get the most "capable" computer of all, a Toshiba Satellite T135 laptop, 64-bit Windows 7, 4G RAM...and it won't run Firefox at all! I have installed an uninstalled both Firefox 3, and just now, Firefox 4. No changes. When I open the software, it usually just locks up for a minute or so, and I finally get a "not responding" message at the top of the screen.
Obviously there is something corrupt in the guts of my laptop. But both IE9 and Chrome work very well--Chrome is blazing fast. I still prefer Firefox because it works best with some particular software I use for work...but I have to go to one of my older computers to do it!
ANY solutions out there? This seems like a very odd problem.
Posting from the Firefox website...using Google Chrome!

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • How to create 800K disks for Mac Plus

I've acquired a Mac Plus in good working condition, but it's just standalone. Eventually I want to network it, but for right now, is there a way to use my Mac Mini or a PC to create 800k disks for the Mac Plus? Things like OS upgrades and other software are available out on the net, but I can't get them to the Plus. I've tried a USB floppy disk drive on the Mini, but it only works with HD diskettes.

    sacsr,
"Can I take MacPlus-appropriate software from the internet, burn it on a CD on my Mac Mini, and load it into the Mac Plus?
Yes! : ) That simple. The Plus was the first 'business Mac' and I loved it until I got a dual floppy SE with an external SCSI HD and an excellerator card with a math co-processor. It was a very capable computer. But, as soon as you used a faster Mac, you never went back to the Plus. You could fix lunch while waiting for disk swapping to boot and load MS Word 3.
What we are saying is that the SCSI bus on the Mac Plus has far more options available for someone shopping for resources.
We have over 300 Macs of almost every model. We have been given over 100 floppy drives. We shop at government surplus stores and auctions. In all that stuff, we only have a couple of 800 k drives but hundreds of SCSI devices. They are SO much easier to find and are so much cheaper to buy and customize.
If you can find a Macintosh 800K (M131) floppy drive, great. Then you also have the problem of finding double density floppy disks ( high density disks with tape over the hole are not reliable in the older drives.)
here is a website with the whole list:
    http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/Apple/drives.html
I remember buying an 800k floppy drive new in 1986 for several hundred Dollars. The external CD-ROM drives sold for $300.
It will probably be much easier to find an Apple 300 or 600i CD-ROM drive that should read CDs burned in your modern Mac. Your original question was about floppies. The real question is "How do I get data from a new computer to an old computer." That question offers more possibilities. I am suggesting a better and cheaper alternative. Having fun with older equipment requires purchasing intermediate equipment.

  • LR 4.1 RC performance issues

I find that the 4.1 rc version is better than 4.0 but still not snappy like 3.6 was.  Here are some things I have noticed that are slow:
    • tagging images with flags, colors, labels, etc. - seems to be a two to three second delay when doing this before they register and show up with the files.  I have write .xmp off.
    • and in regards to writing to xmp off, if I select it,  It seems to want to update my whole catalog (148,000 images) and if I try to quit, it promps me that it has not finished and do I want to quit and if I do it will resume upon restarting.  At that point when I try to quit, it just hangs even if I tell it to quit writing xmp info.  I let it go for a couple hours yesterday and it seems it still didn't finish and caused problems again trying to quit.  I ended up having to force quit.  I never remember this problem in the past and in the past, if you selected write to xmp or not, it used to do it or not do it from that point forward.  Until this is fixed, I have it off and just manually save metadata using Cmd-S.
•When in library mode, moving between images is snappy, however once you go to the develop module, it slows to a snail's pace (3-5 second delay).  I know develop module is not as fast in general for moving between images, but in ver. 3.6 there was only a slight delay (maybe 1 sec.).  Now I'm bouncing back and forth wasting time switching modules, which brings me to my next performance issue:
    * When switching from library to develop, it takes quite a few seconds to respond, then after that it loads the image with the loading... icon/message, and another few seconds are wasted.  That used to be almost instantaneous in 3.6.  Going to develop to library seems fine with only a slight delay.
    • The adjustment brush is faster in 4.1 than 4.0 but not nearly as responsive as in 3.6 which is frustrating and very easy to overdo what you're trying to do by the time the brush catches up.
•Sliders still have a bit of jerkiness to them in develop module.  Also sometimes when I grab a scrubby slider to move it, it highlights the field as if I want to enter a number.  Wish this would not happen.  If I want to enter the number, a single click should do it in the field.  If I grab the scrubby slider, it should just activate the scrubby slider.
    • Keyword suggestions take much longer to generate.  In 3.6 as fast as I'd add keywords, the relevant suggestions would pop up right away.
    • When zooming into 100%, it seems to be reasonably fast to render, but I've noticed sometimes it just shows the blurred semi-rendered version without actually rendering 1:1.  Even unzooming and rezooming doesn't work.  Only solution is to go to another image and then back to the original image and that seems to kick it into gear and re-initialize the rendering engine.
Overall I love the features and new process 2012, I'm just disappointed in the performance.  Especially now that I'm trying to edit a large job.  I really wish the program could be optimized to work as well as 3.6 did and I hope once the final version of 4.1 is released (hopefully soon) we will see an overall performance boost.  I have removed ver 3.6 from my system so that's too much of a hassle to go back and not an option, plus I've gotten used to the new process and like it too much to go back.
From the posts I've read it seems others are experiencing this as well, as well as colleagues I've spoken to.  It seems to be across platforms and regardless of computer specs (as long as someone's using a fairly updated and capable computer)
Thanks for working on a performance boost Adobe and getting ver. 4.1 dialed in and releasing a final version.

    Cannot reproduce on Win7 64Bit (LR4.1RC).
    What OS
    what external editor

  • Using iMac as display for laptop PA

I have a work laptop connected to a docking station that I would like to send video over to my 2012 iMac.  Is this possible?  The docking station has ports for VGA, DVI, and displayport and I need to find out a way to get the image from there to the iMac's mini displayport/thunderbolt.

Some Mac with DisplayPort/Thunderbolt support "Target Display Mode", which allows a Mac to become a dumb monitor for another DisplayPort/Thunderbolt capable computer.  Not sure if your Mac supports "Target Display Mode" or not.  Also not sure if your PC will send the correct signals to enable that.

  • Firewire / DV path has SUDDENLY started being flaky.  Any thoughts?

I'm using a Firewire 400 output as the path for monitoring both audio and video. It's a 6 pin connector to a 4 pin to the Panasonic DV deck (AG-DV2500) and audio RCA out to powered monitors and S-Video to a Sony Video Monitor.
I've been using a similar path (everything the same excet RCA Composite Video out) for months on end with a less robust computer (Dual 1 GHz G4) with no problems whatsoever.
I'm now working at a friends house with a newer, more capable computer and video and audio are randomly dropping out.
Using Built-In audio yields better results, but the video still drops out and they Video is out of sync of the audio.
I could probably deal with the annoyance of the sync issues as well as the occasional video drop out and the less than optimal situation of using cheap computer speakers as the "reference" monitors. The biggest deal is that when we're done, I'm going to want to lay off to DV using the same path that is yielding so many problems.
I've swapped cables. Tried different firewire ports. Checked my settings (everybody is at 48k). Restarted lots of times. I don't think it's a playback problem per se, as the meters continue deflecting and the picture on the computer monitor continues playing as we hear the drop-out and see the picture flicker and come back.
I do have access to a Blackmagic Decklink HD if that would somehow help me out. Ultimately I'll be outputting to the DV deck. It's a long program (at least 1 hour) so the prospect of rendering out a quicktime doesn't sound like a great option.
I know this is a lot of info and I hope it makes sense. I'll try whatever anyone thinks, but given the mountain of work I've got to do, I really need to find a solution fast.
Let me know if you need clarification on anything and thanks in advance for your help.

    A couple of thoughts.
Just because a computer is newer and the CPU more
powerful doesn't mean there is enough RAM or fast
enough hard drives. In particular, the media must
reside on drives separate from the system drive.
Media is on Firewire Drives that are connected via FireWire 800.
There's 4.5 GB of RAM, which I think is plenty.
Random drop outs often come from a disk system that
    is unable to keep up.
I think the Media is keeping up and the FireWire path for monitoring (FW 400) is intermittantly cutting in and out.
You have to run the audio out the same path
(firewire) as the video to have reliable sync.
    That's how we're doing it.

  • How to determine frequency band for one's iMac?

I recently bought a TC and (think I) want to set up two networks. The one network I haver set up presently has an older AEBS (b/g) connected to my modem and an older AX (to extend the network and play iTunes on my sound system). This network connects wirelessly to my two iMacs: a 2.0 GHz G5 and a 2.8 GHz Dual Core.
Someone suggested that I could leave my old network as is and design a new network with TC for backups, utilizing the faster "n" standard of the TC. But when I read through the manual "Designing Airport Networks Using Airport Utility," I see that setting up two networks requires, apparently, knowing whether or not my iMac is a 2.4 GHZ or a 5 GHz client computer? How do we determine this?
Any other info you can provide me on how to setup TC to my wireless network would be appreciated.

So, in the manual Designing Airport Networks, they pair the TC with the "n" capable computer, but in the illustration provided, they have the modem connected to the TC with an Ethernet WAN cable and a LAN ethernet cable connected between the TC and the older AEBS. Is this how it HAS to be configured?
I assume that you are depicting the illustration on page 48. If so, yes this would be the proper configuration for a "Dual Band" network. In this case, you definitely do not want to connect the 802.11g base station wirelessly to the TC, because doing so you would not be able to run the TC's wireless in pure 802.11n.
Could the TC be connected wirelessly in another room to the modem? This is where the 2.8 GHZ iMac is. The modem and the older AEBS are paired presently.
Not to the modem, but to another AirPort. Again, however, if the other AirPort is the older 802.11g version, you will only be able to connect them wirelessly in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
Also, I've read a lot about backing up each computer the first time by way of an ethernet cable, i.e., not wirelessly? Does one simply forego configuring the network until those first backups are finished?
Not doubt not an ideal situation, but many have reported that performing the first Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule wirelessly is not quick. Depending on the amount of data being backed up, I heard anywhere from 4 to 24 hours ... or more.
