3D feature inverting shadows and crashing
I recently updated my drivers from to AMD Catalyst 8.882 to AMD Catalyst 12.10 to promote stability in a 3D modeling program, Photoshop CS6's 3D function is now displaying inverted lighting information, i.e. shadows where light should be hitting and light where shadows should exist. If I try doing anything quickly, the program will crash.
I'm running Win 7 64bit on a HP Pavilion with an i7 multi-core processor with 8 gigs of RAM and with an AMD HD 6770M with 1 Gig of memory, set to fixed graphics.
This explains the shadows issue and provides a workaround:

PS Shadow and Highlights feature in Lightroom.
I would like to see the Shadows and Highlight features (the entire thing)
added as a palette in Lightroom. It would be very useful in my opinion and
does such a great job in Photoshop.
Robert> I like the ability to have it automatically apply it when you bring it up. I
also like the ability to adjust the settings and save them as a default. So
if they added both of these to LR (as well as the other slider controls)
that would be great.
They are (presets for the first, ACR defaults for the second). -
I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere. No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule. It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

Flash content flashing and crashing mac
Hello,
Since the latest FF and Flash update (37 and 17) I can't watch any videos or flash content - like (annoying ad) banners. Everything literally FLASHES. Like a strobe light. Then videos get stuck, the cursor jumps/freezes, sound stutters and eventually mac crashes (panic). The fans are constantly hyperventilating but nothing weird is running in activity monitor.
I have:
* Uninstalled and reinstalled flash; same for Firefox; cleaned flash cache - nothing
* I only have flash, java and QuickTime plugins installed
* Downgraded flash to previous version (16) - better, no flashes, but still stutters and crashes after watching video for 10-15 minutes most (sometimes not even that)
* Tried to watch using VPN but after a while graphics and sound go crazy
* Decided to upgrade again to flash 17. Now it flashes again and I can't watch videos for even 1 minute.
* Tried the about:config media.mediasource.enabled (change to true); dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode (change to false); Firefox "get info" open with 32-bit mode; - nothing worked
What can I do? Any idea?
Thanksmms.cfg = Flash Player
Go to your plugins page. Set everything video to '''Ask.'''
You could try disabling Flash plugin's protected mode. The protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. There is a new hidden setting for this:
(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste flash and pause while the list is filtered
(C) Double-click the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to switch its value from false to true.
This might not take effect until all Flash has been unloaded for a few minutes, or you close Firefox.
1) Enter the config by typing about:config in the address bar.
2) Enter media.mediasource.webm.enabled and press enter.
3) Right click on it and change to true, for some reason it is set as "false" which makes MSE & WebM VP9 not work properly.
4) Visit: https://www.youtube.com/html5 and check that everything is OK.
5) Try to watch a video. It should work now. -
Shadows and Highlights, 101
I've just started working with illustrator and I'm trying to find the best tools for building shadows and highlights in 2d drawings.
So far, it looks like the best way to approach this is with a series of Opacity masks. Using multiple pieces as overlays to highlight and shade the primary object.
I also like the effects of smooth color blending, but I can't see how to blend multiple highlights and shadows into a single object with precision.
As far as the gradient mesh tool goes, it seems to be the wrong effect for 2d designs.
Can someone give me a leg up?
Which tools should I focus on mastering to build shadows and highlights quickly and precisely?
Thanks for your time!
KenNot to beat up on you, Ken, but why do people come to an online user-to-user forum and expect to accomplish in a few posts what amounts to a textbook on drawing technique?
You should narrow down the scope of your question a bit by describing what kinds of objects/surfaces (or better, start with a specific example) you want to render.
You said you are new to Illustrator. Are you also new to vector drawing altogether? That is, it is unclear as to whether you just don't know where to find the specific tools or commands for a drawing principle in AI, or if you don't know the principles to begin with.
Very generally speaking, quite realistic rendering has been done in all the mainstream vector programs for decades, using little more than path blends and grad fills. Those are still the most practical/expedient mainstay techniques.
The new vector stuff like gradient meshes are mostly just elaborations on that basic functionality.
Raster effects can now be used as an alternative where blends have been traditional. But there's really nothing new about combining raster elements in otherwise vector drawings. Raster effects make that more convenient in that they are just rasterization performed on-the-fly. Nor is there anything really new about that. (Canvas was doing it long before AI.)
3D features can also be exploited for quick shading, but the geometry is fairly limited to, well, geometric primitives. AI has an advantage there in that its 3D feature at least supports basic surface mapping. But the vector result is often impractically complex for elaborate renderings, and it becomes best to either rasterize it, or use it as a temporary guide for tracing using--you guessed it--blends and grads.

Does anyone have problems using the highlights, shadows and sharpness controls in iphoto 11? Since I uploaded Mountain Lion on my
mac mini, those editing features no longer work!!!!Sorry, I booted into 10.8 just to test this, but I only have iPhoto 08.

CS4 Extremely slow, and crashing on save
Illustrator CS4 is taking hours to save bigger files with semi-complicated drawings. Seeing a lot of the rotating beach ball. This drawing happens to have many gradients, a drop shadow and also a glow. Sometimes it takes all night to save the file. Now it seems any bigger file, such as 100mg's will work extremely slow, then crash on save. Any way to speed this up or fix the problem? I'm missing a deadline due to repeated work that has crashed over the course of a week. Thanks.
If you don't need the file to be compatible with other Creative Suite software (to e.g. place it there or open it) then you might try and turn off PDF compatibility.
Also try and turn off compression. -
Unusual iCal Behavior - Duplicates and Crashes
Over the past week or so, my iCal and MobileMe setup hasn't been working properly. First, my iPhone keeps getting duplicate calendar entries when there is only one unique appointment in iCal. Second, iCal has been responding really slowly and crashing a lot when I try to do simple things like advance to the next week or move an appointment. The only significant change in my system since the problem began was that I installed anti-virus software a few days ago. After uninstalling it, there appears to be no change in iCal's erratic behavior. Perhaps this is MobileMe-related? Any help? Thanks.
Found the cause of this, but not the solution to stop it while troubleshooting another iPhone issue I have. Here's what I posted in that thread (contacts breeding like cockroaches):
If anyone has a way to stop this, other than not using the repeat/remind me later feature of the calendar, please chime in.
Okay, I just ran a test on my recurring events, and this is definitely related to using the remind me later feature. If you select remind me later instead of closing an alarmed event, then iSync places a new copy of the event on the iPhone. An interesting angle to that is the new event has an Alert time 8 hours (I'm Pacific Time) later than the Desktop's time.
I'll acknowledge this could be a design limitation of the iPhone's calendar, but it seems more like a bug.
You can duplicate this issue easily by doing the following:
On your computer, create a new recurring event with an alarm time a minute or two in the future, far enough to give you time to sync your iPhone.
Sync your iPhone and make sure the event copied over.
Let the alarm go off on your desktop machine, and then select the repeat in 5 mins option.
Sync your iPhone again.
Now check your iPhone, there will be a new non-recurring copy of the event with an alert time offset to GMT time on the iPhone.
I'm going to send this as a bug report to Apple and hope they see it as such. The iPhone's calendar is a crowded enough view to not need duplicates of events showing up on it.
That answers the calendar portion of this question, but the address book issue is uncertain. This calendar question was asked some time ago, so I'll copy this info into that old unanswered question in case someone else misses this one. Apologies to anyone who might end up reading it twice. -
Why can't i delete songs from older i-pod touch, delete feature greyed out and right click or holding control and clicking do not offer delete option in I-tunes. I've tried using both a Mac Book and PC with newer and older versions of I-tunes.
It sounds like you are try to delete the songs by connecting the iPod to other than the computer from which the songs were synced. You can only delete songs synced to an an older iPod (pre iOS 5) by connecting the iPod to its syncing computer and unsync them.
If you want to change syncing computers see:

Shadow and gradients slow page load...why?
I have read how shadows and gradients slow down a web site, and that you should replace them with (essentially) screen shots of the same (i.e. looks the same, but not using the shadow or gradient feature of iweb).
I understand that larger photos (etc) slow down a page load, but I don't follow why these do. I am curious for an explaination. It would seem intuitive that the apple folks would publish a web site in a way that did not cause this (i.e. covert shadows and gradients to jpgs or something).
thanks
bobShadows and gradients generally actually don't cause professional designers any issues, how you design it and what file format is important, most produce high quality images with a low impact to the web page load time. I have been designing for over 20 years and quite like iWeb challenges .
iWeb however does something quite different, it adds to an existing image, mainly using javascript which slows the rendering and page loads. iWeb works great for non professionals as it's dreadfully poor from a site point of view, remember iweb is a toy in the software world of web design tools, so enjoy it for what it is..
A simple way to prove is to design a single page in iWeb and the another using, say, Dreamwever, look at the rendering/load times..... -
Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 - multiple booting and crashing issues
I have a Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 operating system. It was upgraded from Vista to windows 8 last year and it worked really very well for about 1 year. Here are the issues I am facing these days
1. When powered on - Caps lock and Num lock LEDs keep flashing twice and the sequence keeps repeating - I checked the error code on some forums and it sounded like BIOS issue so I flashed the BIOS F38 again (SP46501) but it didn't help. I also thought it could be a memory issue so I removed the memory module and cleaned the slots and fixed the modules again but no luck. I also tried running the laptop using only one module, tried both the modules one by but no changes in error code. Then I thought it could be a toy bettery issue so replaced the toy batter that fits on the motherboard but no luck. I have also tried booting up removing the laptop battery pack but no luck.
So how does it boot now? - Once powered on I keep getting Caps lock Num lock LED flashing issues every time. Then I power off using power on/off button on laptop around 15 times or more then the laptop somehow boots up. There is no fixed pattern, sometimes it boots after 15 attempts, sometimes 50 attempts.
Whats happenes after booting? - Sometimes the screen goes completely blank without any error message on the screen. Sometimes Windows 8 crashes and laptop restarts, when it restarts I never see LED flashing issues (surprising). It crashes when I am watching some videos or playing some games, so looks like ATI Radeon driver issue (driver is 8.970.100.7000 for HD 3400 display card).
Let me know if there are any suggestion to fix the botting and crashing issues faced.Hi Expertit ,
At first sight ,seems to be a boot issiu.Did you thry this?
Booting into the Windows 8 setup, select “Repair your computer” in the bottom part of the window, then “Troubleshoot” and “Advanced options”. Here I was given a good reminder of another cool Windows 8 feature. If you have a restore point created you can go back to that working copy of the OS without losing your data.
So the first thing you will want to try is the Automatic Repair.
If that fixes your boot problem, you had it easy and go on to create a restore point for another time you are out of luck. If Windows is unable to fix your issue, read on.
Go back to the Advanced options and choose the Command Prompt. Going for the next easiest way to fix the problem, enter the following four commands into the prompt:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
After receiving a success confirmation. Close the CMD window and restart your PC.
If you are booted into Windows, excellent! If not, let us know , so we can try some more solutions.
2.If your video crashes , it is probably wrong Catalyst settings.Right click on screen , open Catalyst control settings , set it to high (Radeon) performance.
Expecting your next post.

HP Pavilion Elite e91804 experiencing lock-ups and crashing after LWSEP
1. Product name and number: HP Pavilion Elite e91804
2. Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit
3. No error message (other than blue screen)
4. My most recent change was sending my computer in for the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program, and receiving a new motherboard.
Before I sent my computer in for the LWSEP I was experiencing lock-ups and crashes only when I was multi-tasking (playing video games, listening to music, and having tabs open in firefox).
So I sent my computer in for the LWSEP to receive a new motherboard to fix these crashes, however after receiving my computer from them, the lock-ups and crashing have not been fixed and, in fact, have gotten worse. My computer will now lock-up and crash whenever I attempt to stream anything, be that music, video, etc. I can still occasionally play video games, assuming that I am doing nothing else, and that my computer cooperates with me (not locking up), but this only happens about 1/3 of the time.
My main confusion is that sending my computer in was supposed to fix my problem, not make it worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.1. Product name and number: HP Pavilion Elite e91804

my itunes will not open at all. it occasionally will open but when i plug my iphone into it the program freezes and crashes. please help as soon as possible
i think i might have a solution... i have windows vista and after i installed to latest itunes update everytime i tried to open it it would freeze. I tried everything, including uninstalling itunes and all of its components and reinstalled it numerous times. So i went to the itunes folder in my folders, not on itunes, and i deleted my itunes library and playlists. After that it worked just fine, all of my music was deleted but luckily i had my files saved elsewhere.
I hope this helped! I know its frustrating and APPLE/ITUNES NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!!! -
