3D Fog (not fractal noise method)

I'm using CC particle world to create fog in a 3d scene made entirely in AE.
However, it doesn't really look great, and I'm wondering what settings people use or if there is a good method of generating 3d fog.
My camera flys around inside the scene, so it's important for the fog to be genuine 3d and not just layers of fractal noise on solids or real fog composited in.

Even with a camera flying through the scene, you can just use several layers of real fog/smoke footage distributed in 3D space.
One trick is to have the fog layers automatically orient toward the camera so that you're never seeing them edge-on.
See this page for a bunch of resources on creating and compositing fog. Pay special attention to the Mark Christiansen article linked to from there.
Personally, I've never found the creation of fog/smoke with a particle system to be worth the trouble. Using footage elements of fog/smoke as a starting point has always been more efficient for me.

  • Fractal Noise-Evolution not working in After Effects.

    Pretty fresh to after effects. Following this tutorial until I notice that Evolution wasn't having an effect and I noticed the numbers were red. I assume it's a limitation of my computer in some way but I'm not sure what or how to resolve it.

    We need more details. If you apply fractal noise to a layer and animate evolution then you should see a change. If you downloaded a sample project file then there may be an expression attached to evolution. That's the only way that the numbers would not be able to be changed. Select your layer with Fractal Noise applied and press the e key twice to reveal any expressions.

  • Why are animation presets not showing in pop-up list for fractal noise?

    In a standard install of AE CS4, the animation presets pop-up list showed a bunch of presets for fractal noise (see attached image).
    In a standard install of AE CS5.5, the animation presets pop-up list showed a bunch of presets for fractal noise (see attached image).
    In a standard install of AE CS6 (on the Mac), the pop-up list is empty. (Yes, I enabled the "Show presets"), despite the fact that, eg, "Curtain.ffx" is in the equivalent Presets>Backgrounds folder.
    Is there another switch to turn on? I'm using Mac OSX 10.7.5.

    Hello i've got a Problem,
    I was sitting on After Effects for like 5hours to make a fresh Intro but then after i Exported it to a Premiere Pro File and i try to open it with PP it says
    "Videfilter is missing: Ae.Fractal Noise.
    I dont have any ideas what i could do pls help me.

    Premiere does not use Fractal Noise.
    Might want to export it into a lossless file.

  • IMPORTING AFTER EFFECTS FRACTAL NOISE?

    If I create a fractal noise comp in AE that is the same dimensions as the photoshop file that is going to be used for printing then will that after effects fractal noise comp be suitable for high quality printing? I am not using fibres as I find it not particularly useful or easy to use as fractal noise in photoshop.
    thanks
    Angus

    You can do that in several ways:
    1. Yuu can use dynamic link from AE to PPro - that mean you don't need to render anything from AE. More on that: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Adobe Dynamic Link
    2. If you are using newest version of AE/PPro you can use something valled Live Text Templates. More on that: After Effects Help | Live Text Templates or Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Live Text templates
    3. Or if you need to render from AE and import footage to PPro you have to render that footage with codec that gives you alpha channel, and you have to turn on alpha in AE export settings. more on that: After Effects Help | Basics of rendering and exporting

  • Fast Preview Mode Fractal Noise

    Scrubbing values (contrast, brigthness, complexity, etc--all) of Fractal Noise  alters the noise completely while the scrubbing takes place--when
    "Open GL -Interactive" is selected.  Release the mouse button, and the noise looks completely different than what is shown during scrubbing.

    Well, that's between and your NVidia driver. That's all there is to it. Hardware acceleration is tricky and you are running a card that didn't exist while CS5 was developed, so nobody could test for potential issues. I know that's not what you wanna hear, but you are pretty much on your own and between installing different driver versions to fiddling with configuration options it's all your own fun. Even if the card was tested, you could still run a specific configuration that would yield the same issues. It's the nature of the beast. In any case, AE is far from dependent on OpenGL, so simply turning it off is always an option and on a reasonably new processor, there is almost no noticable difference in realtime performance.

  • Turbulent / Fractal Noise - evolution limit?

    I came across what seems to be a limit in the number of evolutions I can use in both Turbulent and Fractal Noise. I was following a recipe for simulating dirt on old film stock - you create a solid layer add one of the noise FXs then change the contrast up to 350 and brightness down to -90 or so, use the Silhouette Luma transfer mode and hey presto instant dirt!
    The clip I am "dirtying" is 1 minute, 8 seconds and 23 frames long. So a quick calculation for 25fps (I'm using PAL footage) and I get 1723 frames! My logic was that since the dirt needs to jump around on each frame if I set the number of evolutions to 1723 I'd get very jumpy dirt, which is what I want - dirt jumps randomly frame to frame and not move across or appear in exactly the same spot on different frames.
    It works but only for the first few seconds and then, with both Turbulent and Fractal Noise it stops evolving! Is there a limit here? I can't see anything in the manual and nothing turned up when I Googled or searched through the forums.
    I'm running AE CS4 9.0.2 under Windows XP sp3 with 4GB RAM with the 3gig switch on.
    My work around was to use several keyframes throughout the clip every 2 seconds with keyframes for evolution set to 0 then 50, then 0 again and 50 again then back to 0 again...etc. This worked a treat. But am I missing something obvious about how these useful and versatile FX work?
    The recipie for the old footage BTW was here:
    http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/ae/oldfilmlook/
    I made my own vignette, a custom flattened curve to reduce contrast. I added an adjustment layer for brightness with a wiggle, another with a wiggled blur as well scaling up the footage 105%, added noise and used a slight jumpy wiggle on the position. Then I threw on the dirt and slowed down the footage to 16fps. But the scratches didn't work for me and it looks convincing without.

  • Loud "Fog Horn" Like Noise

    While I was playing back a portion of HDV video I had captured into Final Cut Express, a loud "fog horn" like noise (one that wasn't recorded from the camera) started playing back covering up the audio. I had previously worked on this section and no unusual noise occurred. I checked the source footage on my external hard drive and there was nothing wrong with the audio.
    I have FCE HD 4.0.1 running on an Intel iMac 10.6.2
    Any ideas as to the cause?
    Thanks.

    Did the music come from iTunes or another program that may have put DRM (Digital Rights Management) code on it? If so, you'd need to go through this process to use it in FCE, assuming it is only for home viewing:
    http://fcpbook.com/Audio4.html
    If it wasn't from iTunes, it may have been that the music you were using did not match the settings of your sequence. FCE only really likes audio files that are AIFFs at 32 or 48kHz. If this was the case, you could've gone through this process to convert the file to an AIFF that FCE likes:
    http://fcpbook.com/Audio1.html -- In this case rendering should've worked as well.
    Finally, it may have been that your preferences for real-time listening were set to the amount of tracks you were listening to!
    As you can see, there are always multiple things that could go wrong, but it's great that it's working for you now. Good luck with your future projects!

    Oh, I see that the title of your post is an error message? Ok. Well, the test class is declared as implementing an ActionListener. That means the test class must have an actionPerformed() method. Your test class apparently does not.
    It does not appear that the test class needs to implement ActionListener. You are using annonymous classes as listeners.

    I think you forgot to include the skippedEntity method, it seems to be missing. Even if an implemented class has a method that you are not using, you still have to include the method in your code even if it doesn't do anything.

  • ...is not abstract and does not override abstract method compare

    Why am I getting the above compile error when I am very clearly overriding abstract method compare (ditto abstract method compareTo)? Here is my code -- which was presented 1.5 code and I'm trying to retrofit to 1.4 -- followed by the complete compile time error. Thanks in advance for your help (even though I'm sure this is an easy question for you experts):

    According to the book I'm reading, if you merely take
    out the generic from the code, it should compile and
    run in v1.4 (assuming, of course, that the class
    exists in 1.4). I don't know what book you are reading but that's certainly incorrect or incomplete at least. I've manually retrofitted code to 1.4, and you'll be inserting casts as well as replacing type references with Object (or the erased type, to be more precise).
    These interfaces do exist in 1.4, and
    without the generics.Exactly. Which means compareTo takes an Object, and you should change your overriding method accordingly.
    But this raises a new question: how does my 1.4
    compiler know anything about generics? It doesn't and it can't. As the compiler is telling you, those interfaces expect Object. Think about it, you want to implement one interface which declares a method argument type of Object, in several classes, each with a different type. Obviously all of those are not valid overrides.

    These error messages are quite clear in telling what is wrong. You have an Interface called Displayable that specifies a method something like thispublic String getDisplayText() {But in your Product source code, you created thismethodpublic void getDisplayText() {The compiler is complaining because the methods are not the same.
    You also need to return a String in the method probalby like thisreturn message;

  • Flash Builder 4.6 code hinter problem - not showing some methods

    Hi All,
    I have a problem with FB code hinter. It does not show some methods on an object.
    To be exact I created a Date object and FB code hinter does not show .toDateString method (actually I it shows only one to string method - .ToString(), although according to docs there are more)
    When I use .toDateString method, code still compiles and work just fine, however method is not showing up in code hinter, which is really annoying..
    Anyone had this problem? If so, please, share some wisdom how to solve this thing.
    Thanks in advance.
    UPDATE:
    Here is some more info in my problem.
    I have tried to reinstall the application, but it did not help.
    So what I did was:
    * first I installed FB standard edition version 4.
    * I checked the code hinter and it worked. It showed .toDateString method.
    * I have purchased FB standard 4.5 upgrade.
    * I installed this upgrade, and boom the code hinter does not show the method...
    * Next I tried to create a project with Flex 4.1 sdk and then it worked - method was there. So the problem is with 4.6 sdk apparently...sucks...

    Hi, I have the same problem. I have a new FB 4.6 installation and it is my first FB installation. Do you have a solution already?

  • Flex Data Services does not see remote methods in extended ColdFusion component.

    I have created a remote service base component as a AModelService.cfc file. I extend that file to make my ModelService.cfc. When I configure the ColdFusion data service and point to ModelService.cfc and click next, I don't see any remote methods (there are none explicitly defined in the component) in the Service Operations window.
    If I go back and point to AModelServide.cfc, the parent component, and hit next, I see all the remote methods that are defined in the parent component. So, either I am doing something wrong, or Data Services does not look at methods up the cfc prototype chain, which from an OOP standpoint means that instead of say creating one restful base class and being nice and DRY you can't. I.e. not OOP for data services. Is this a bug, or what?
    Anybody get data services to work with extended service components?
    Mark

    Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did compile all the Java and it
    works OK with a simple Java program. It just will not work in a
    Flex application.
    The java classes are:
    RRA:
    package blah.myPackage;
    import java.util.List;
    import java.util.Collection;
    import flex.data.DataSyncException;
    import flex.data.assemblers.AbstractAssembler;
    class RRA extends AbstractAssembler
    public Collection fill( List fillParameters )
    RRS service = new RRS();
    return service.getSome();
    RRS:
    package blah.myPackage;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.List;
    import java.sql.*;
    import flex.EORS.*;
    class RRS
    public List getSome()
    ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
    String str = "bob";
    RR rr = new RR(str);
    list.add(rr);
    return list;
    RR:
    package blah.myPackage;
    class RR
    private String name;
    public RR() { }
    public RR(String name)
    this.name = name;
    public String getName()
    return this.name;
    public void setName(String name)
    this.name = name;
    I started with something that retrieved data from a database
    but watered it down just to try and get some kind of communication
    between Flex and Java.
