3D layers: copy attributes or replace from file

Sorry I can't figure this out, but it happens to me often:
I create a 3D model in Cheetah3D, bring it into Photoshop CS5 Extended using 3D/New Layer From 3D File...
I size, orient it, get the lights just right, get the camera perfect, then realize I need to make a change to the model.
I make the change, and then I can not find a way to replace the model, but keep all the attributes I worked so hard to tweak.
Is there a way to replace a model? or alternatively, is there a way to copy all attributes from one 3D layer to another?
Thanks, Sheldon.

Hi Steve,
I've been exporting from Cheetah3D as .3ds, but have also tried .obj, and some others.
I've tried the 'merge' function, but afaik, you can't make the positioning the same this way...
I think I've got it figured out: - Basically you can save camera's position/orientation, object's position/orientation and lights' position/orientation - but those saved properties are only usable within the 3D layer from which they were created. I wanted to be able to used them in other 3D layers but couldn't. What I failed to notice is that the orientation/position information of any 3D is available in any other 3D layer in the drop down list and is titled with the other 3D layer's name. This was lost on me for months because every time I experimented with this, the original 3D layer and the new 3D layer always had the same name, and I didn't make the connection one was referring to the other (same name)! This may read like gobbledy-goop but if anyone ever has the same problem as me, the answer is in there. --Shift Studio.

  • Photoshop CC will not import any video files when I try Video Frame to Layers and New Video Layer from File

Specifically I'm trying to import a .MOV I made in Quicktime. The file opens up everywhere else so it's not an issue with the file being corrupted. The error message I get from CC is
"Could not complete command _____________ because the video file could not be opened."
As far as I know I didn't save the .MOV with any permissions, but then again I have very limitted understanding of Quicktime. Originally the file was a .GIF that I converted to an .MOV because I wanted to edit the GIF using the video timeline instead of the animation timeline.
    Thanks for the help.
Also, as an aside since I know a lot of Adobe employees are on here, the animation timeline is pretty crummy, there should be a way that you can open a .GIF into the video timeline as a video layer.

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Copying formula sheets to new files

Hello all! Thank you for your time and expertise This is the first major problem I have had with Numbers and it has me stumped.
    I have 12 separate files named Q1 - Q12. Each contains sheets named A - I.
I am trying to create a new file named A which contains each A sheet from files Q1 to Q12. Briefly, I copy sheet A from file Q1 and paste it into file A and rename it Q1 (since it was originally named A). I then copy sheet A from file Q2 and paste it into file A and rename it Q2 (since it was also originally named A). This pattern continues until file A contains sheets Q1 - Q12. I then do the same with file B until it contains Q1 - Q12, etc. I have also created a sheet named Score which contains formulas that have sheets Q1 - Q12 referenced.
The problem occurs when I try to copy the Score sheet from file A to file B. Since it has formulas referencing sheets Q1-Q12, I figured it would still work (since file B has sheets also named Q1-Q12), however all formulas paste as =#REF! (i.e. the formula is completely gone and replaced with =#REF!).
This puzzles me as I used this strategy when creating scoring sheets in the original files Q1-Q12 containing sheets A-I. Copying and pasting the scoring sheet between those files worked just fine. The only thing I can think of is that renaming the sheets may have something to do with it. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it? Thank you so much for your time!

I do mean "sheets" when I described sheets; I actually simplified the original post to keep it short(ish). For the sake of berevity, I didn't mention that each sheet actually had 9 different tables in it. I just figured that added an extra layer of unneeded complexity.
Since the two files have the same layout (i.e. sheets named the same, same number of tables per sheet, etc.), I was confident that my sheet containing formulas (Score) referencing other sheets by name would be able to be copied to other files without problem. But I was wrong...
Trying your idea, it does appear to work but is a bit more labor-intensive than I had hoped it would be. Thank you for the suggestion - I do appreciate it! This solution is definitely better than the alternative I had come up with, so I'll keep it in mind if no one else has experienced this problem and has a solution. Thank you

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

  • Copy multi-layer artwork from one file to another; keep layers...

I have an intricate drawing that has a portion I am drawing in a separate document. The layers in the second document do not exist in the destination document.
Is there a way to copy and paste the art so that the objects are kept to their separate layers, and at the same time, create those layers in the destination document when pasting the vectors?

Here is my approach when working with two files, lets say one is a base file, and from a separate file I have changes on layers, or multiple changes, (like varietys).Lets say there are 5 layers. I create another layer, (now there will be 6) call it "changes" lets say in the file with all the other 5 layers.
In Layer pallette, I drag all 5 layers into the 6 layer, they then become sublayers. Then I copy that 6 layer "changes" (with all 5 layers as sublayers) into my base file.
Now I can pull them out and re stack, rename or what have you.
What is cool in working like this if you select the enveloping layer by the "button" you can turn off sub layers and still move everything as a group if you need to position. Example of this would be a die on one layer and a background image on another. With the 'enveloping" layer selected you could turn off the image "sub" layer and by keeping the die layer on you could align by the die and once in postion, turn on the image sub layer.
    hope this helps,
    good luck

  • Is there a way to copy attributes from one composition to another?

    I'm using After Effects 7.0
I'd like to copy the same Zoom attributes from one composition to 30 photographs.
In Final Cut, you can copy attributes from one clip to another. Or from one still photo to another.
Is there a way to do that in AE 7?
    Thanx
    Mike

EDIT: I see you edited your question, so I am editing my reply.
To copy the scale of a layer, open the main twirl of that layer and you'll see the Transform properties group. Open the twirl for that, and you'll see Anchor Point, Position, Scale, etc. Click on "Scale" and copy it (Edit > Copy, or Control+C on Windows/Command+C on Mac). Then select the other layers and just paste (Edit > Paste, or Control+C on Win/Command+V on Mac).
    Such a broad question
Anytime you add a new item you imported to the timeline or composition panels, it becomes a new layer.
Anytime you duplicate an existing layer (Edit > Duplicate), you get a new layer.
Anytime you split a layer (Edit > Split) you get a new layer.
Anytime you copy a whole layer (target the name in the timeline panel) and paste it, you get a new layer.
You also create layers when you use the Shape tools, text tools, or create a new solid layer, etc.
This list could go on and on, so instead, I invite you to read the After Effects Help section on Creating layers specifically, and the whole chapter on Layers and properties, in general. If anything isn't clear for you, then let us know.

  • Where has 'do you want to replace this file' gone when copying items in lion?

Hello, can anyone tell me if I can still have the option when copying items from one folder to another to be asked ' do you want to replace this file' instead of only having the new options to: stop / keep both / or replace all?  thanks for your help.

If you don't mind losing them, it's all right to do it.
Maybe you just want to delete them instead?
Or do you mean you want to replace the faulty one in your Projects folder with a correct one from your Applications folder?
Is this the Application you're talking about moving?

  • Allow files being copied to merge with existing files instead of replacing

As a windows switcher, I am used to the fact that I can drag Folder A with Folder B and C inside on Hard Drive 1 over to Folder A with Folder D and E inside on Hard Drive 2 and it would just merge the two giving you Folder A with B,C,D and E on hard drive 2.
Why on God's green earth can't OS X do this!?!? I even asked my father-in-law who is a retired Tier 2 apple tech support and he said it can't be done but to post here.
Apple! Give us the option to replace or merge

Is funny to see people saying that MAcOs is not windows
If we talk about the fact that the 2 os are totally different because they work in a different way is one thing; while if we say that the UI (that's what finder is...a UI, same for IE on Windows...you can call it AERO or whatever you like, but is IE in the end) is totally different we are going to say something that is incorrect.
The left click is left click on any OS, same for the right one that calls the contextual menu...these are things that were set up as default by almost all the modern os that has a UI instead of being textual; so if MacOs wanna replace instead of merge is a problem for who use Unix/solaris/bsd/linux, Windows, Beos, AmigaOs and others.
The point is not that me, the user, adapt to the os, but is the OS that must do what i want, because i am the one that use it; so would make more sense to add features like every other os does, and make happy the users, instead of delivering this software ultra simplified (except the pro apps) that simply says "this is what i wanna give you, use it, adapt to it and don't try to do something else except what i let you to do"....are we free to operate an os in the way that we want? The answer is no
Doesn't cost too much to do operations in a way or another, or get used to an os or another, but in the end the lack of a replace (like the lack of a move instead of copying) is something that surprise me...seems that Apple while writing functionality, decide that some has to be cut off...probably because they have no clue how to resolve an issue or being lazy (somebody said the issue with the duplicates in Itunes, or the impossible management of more than one library without loosing ratings and playcounts?).
No offense, but if something can be done with AmigaOs, that is based on Unix (like MacOs) and more than 15 years old, i can't really understand why MacOs has to bother users in this way without giving choices to decide how they wanna copy their folders
an example above all: i have poser, a lot of material come in zip files where the runtime folder is zipped, so on pc is enough to decompress the zip file and copy it into the main poser directory, so the files inside the runtime folder will merge (we are talking of 10-20 folder nested in each other...takes 10 minutes to do the operation by hand as suggested ); I tried the same on MAc and the result was that i lost an afternoon installing stuff without realizing that i was not merging but replacing LOL
If any of you has poser he knows what i am talking about....and the solution? launch bootcamp or parallels and then copy the runtime folder from the pc drive to mac drive
Tidal...long story short.....get parallels and organize the files with Windows, then copy the folder on Mac and replace it

  • How to copy very large number of files from one drive to another???

I'm a fairly experienced Mac user for serveral years but this problem really has me stumped.
I'm trying to copy or move 152,000 files from one external drive to another drive. I can highlight (Cmd - A) all the files on the first drive and drag them to the second drive but Finder always shows 32,768 files being copied no matter what I try.
Any and all suggestions on how to move/copy a large number of files from one external drive to another are greatefully appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Mack

I would use the command line tool rsync.
For instance with: rsync -av source-dir destination-dir
-a The files are transferred in "archive" mode, which ensures that symbolic links, devices, attributes, permissions, ownerships, etc. are preserved in the transfer.
-v Verbose, so you see the progress.
Rsync is fast and really, really powerful and many times used in shell scripts and the like to automatically backup and/or sync stuff. Google a bit for more info.

  • Applescript for replacing Original Files with aliases from an Organized Library.

Hi, all I am new to Applescript and the support community. I am working on developing a script that takes a folder and replaces its original music content with aliases from an organized Library. Let me explain a little better.. I have a list of project folders that all contain folders and original music. My company uses iTunes to store and organize their music. Once iTunes has imported the music and has made a copy of the original file and organizes it accordingly we create an alias within the iTunes Library and manually drag and drop the aliases into our Project folders. I have a Script that reverts the aliases with the orginal file and the coding is
    Code starts here---
    set f to choose folder
    ProcessAlias(f as string)
-- replacess all alias files in the passed folder path (string)
    on ProcessAlias(this_folder)
-- get list of folders in this_folder
set utid to AppleScript's text item delimiters -- store old delimiters
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {return}
    tell application "Finder"
set folder_listing to every folder of folder this_folder as string
    end tell
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to utid -- restore old delimiters
    if folder_listing is "" then
    set folder_list to {}
    else
set folder_list to paragraphs of folder_listing
    end if
    -- process folder_list
    repeat with sub_folder in folder_list
ProcessAlias(sub_folder) -- send each folder back to this subroutine
    end repeat
-- get list of alias files and process them
    tell application "Finder"
set alias_files to every file of folder this_folder whose kind is "Alias"
    repeat with this_alias in alias_files
try -- error if broken alias
set orig_item to original item of this_alias
set item_dest to container of this_alias
move orig_item to item_dest with replacing
    end try
    end repeat
    end tell
return -- you can return a listing of moved originals if you want
    end ProcessAlias
Basically I need the revers of this process. The objective is to save space and continue to let iTunes organize and copy files for us. I already have made a script that generates aliases into the subfolders of iTunes organized Library withour replacing the file that iTunes created. I also made a script that takes the itunes library and dumps all the aliases into a designated folder. I thought this may be helpful for drawing aliases to files that are in our project folder but seem to be stuck.
I was thinking maybe if I took my iTunes and made all the aliases all into one folder to draw aliases from would make it easier. I'm not sure but it seems like there should be some easy way of doing this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also Script above is for reverting aliases into original files as posted by Eatalay of this forum.

  • Replacement from the Value of an Attribute*

Replacement from the Value of an Attribute
With formula variables you can set the processing type Replacement from the Value of an Attribute and create a reference to the reference characteristic for the variable. The attribute Reference to Characteristic (Constant 1) is a dummy attribute that is available with each characteristic. It serves to create a reference to the characteristic, by which it does not need to be aggregated. By choosing this attribute, you can influence the aggregation behavior of calculated key figures in a targeted way and can improve performance during calculation.
1)what does this do in the query?
2)what is the value of the variable created ?(like 1,2 etc {i.e.} it changes or is  a constant value like 1)?
E.g. i have created a formula variable zvar , (replacement path  type) ref. char is wbselement, then what will be the value of the zvar if its used in a formula
    eg.  Formula 1 = kef1 kef2zvar.
what will be the value(s)  of the variables in the these cases
    1. project = 1000,1000.30.
    2.project = 2000,2000.30.01
    3.proect = 3000,3000.30.01,3000.30.02.
3.) as per the def. its a  number which refer to a wbs, then in the FORMULA , will it consider the zvar as a VALUE or what would happen?
Edited by: jumboash on Oct 23, 2009 7:25 PM

    Hi,
ZVAR is not considered as value in the calculation. It is used only to calculate the formula correctly without aggregation of the operands.
For example there are two materials m1 and m2 . total amount has to be calculated for these materials whose quantitys are 10 and 20 and whose prices are 200 and 300 respectively.
Case1:- if ZVAR is not used then the calculation of the fromula will be as follows
    qty   Price    amount
    10 * 200   = 2000
    20 * 300   = 6000
    30 * 500 =  15000     ->   The total amount shows is 15000 which is not correct
Case 2: -  if ZVAR is used in the calculation of the formula
    qty   Price    amount
    10 * 200   = 2000
    20 * 300   = 6000
8000   -> The total amount shows is 8000 which is correct
so using the ZVAR in the formula shows the correct result without considering the aggregation . This is useful in the case if the material is not part of rows.

  • Copying Large Blocks of MP3 files from External Hard Drive to iTunes

I'm trying to copy large numbers of MP3 files from my external
hard drive to iTunes. I tried putting them in the iTunes music folder but this did not work. Then I tried selecting blocks of the songs and dragging and dropping them in iTunes. This also did not work because when I select a large block of files and then click on them (holding down the mouse button) to drag them, then they become "unselected." So, I guess my question is 2 fold: Why can I not copy and paste these files to some folder on the Macintosh Hard drive where they will be recognized by iTunes (show up in iTunes) and what is wrong with my clicking and dragging technique? Am I losing it?

If you are trying to add tunes to your library then do the work from within iTunes not via the Finder. Droping the tunes into the iTunes folder will not create a reference for iTunes to find the tunes. You should be able to drag-drop the tunes/folders into the main iTunes window.
It is usually easier to use the 'keep' and 'copy' features selected. This way iTunes will keep your tunes organized and all in one place. If you work from in the iTunes interface then you will likely not go wrong.
From the iTunes File menu select 'add to library' (+O) and navigate to your ext HD and iTunes should bring those tunes into your library.

I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.
Thanks for helping and understanding my crazy caution!

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.
