3D manipulator tools gone

I'm using PS CS6 extended, and when using the 3D layout I have been unable to find the neat new manipulators that make moving your object, lights, and camera so easy. They were there, and suddenly disappeared as if I'd tripped a switch that turned them off. I have searced all the menus and preference settings to be sure everything is "visible". I can still maneuver things maually by typing numeric values into the "coordinates" boxes, but that is pretty cumbersome.
The only clue I have, and I may be off-base, is from reading about a similar problem in this forum where the response indicated that Open CL must be on. I thought, "ah ha", it seems like this problem may have started about the time I updated my video driver.
Upon checking this in PS, I find the option to turn on Open CL is "greyed out". Seeing that, I updated my driver again (for AMD Radeon HD 7000) to the latest one, which specified that it includes an Open CL driver. But that made no difference.
Though I still suspect this may be a driver issue, I'm not sure how to fix it. I could revert back to my original driver if I knew which version it was. But then, it might not be a driver issue at all.
I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. I've been inquiring about this for over a week now on another PS forum, to no avail.

If you see other files nearby with similar names don't touch those - they're from the original install of the drivers shipped with Windows I think.

Where has the colored fringe removal tool gone in ACR 6.7?

Having just updated ACR to ver 6.7 (6.7.0.339) I am surprised to find that the colored fringe removal tool in the Lens Correction palette has disappeared. All that there is now is Transform, Lens Vignetting and the relatively useless Defringe.
I thought updates were supposed to provide enhancements, not remove things. What else has been taken away?
I use this tool a lot and would like to get it back. If it has been replaced with something supposedly better, then what and where is it? Have I missed something?
Any advice on this would be appreciated.

However, the article seems to apply only to ACR 7 (which I presume is exclusive to CS6) and LR 4. My question was really about ACR 6.7.0.339 in CS5, which installed via Adobe Updates, during the past week. On my system, this update appears to have removed the manual fringe removal tools in the Lens Correction palette.
There is nothing about this in the release notes, so has something gone wrong here?
However I have discovered that my lens is now supported, and that applying the (semi) automatic adjustments via the Lens Profile tab does a reasonable job of fixing chromatic aberrations (as well as geometrical aberrations) and is a lot quicker to use. However the manual tool should still be there to fix problems with unsupported lenses as well as a means of applying finer adjustments, perhaps to selected parts of an image, or to accomodate variations in manufactured lens quality.

Server tools gone

Has anyone else experienced that their server tools for Snow Leopard Server have been removed when upgrading to Lion? I also can't connect via screen sharing which was never a problem with Snow Leopard.

Stamp and Typewriter tool gone after 9.5.2 update??

Where did the stamp and typewriter tool go when I updated to Acrobat 9.5.2??

I found that the Typewriter tool only appears on the Tools menu if the PDF you have open allows it.
With some PDF forms I open, the Typewriter is missing from the Tools, but when I switch to a different PDF it reappears.
There must be a permissions setting in each PDF that disables/enables the Typewriter tool.

Are some of the ACR tools gone in 8.5? I do not have the rotate tools etc after upgrading to 2014

Unfortunately, Firefox has not responded to this very simple question. I was in software development for years and can assure everyone that this is not a difficult issue to resolve....that is if it is a priority??????

Illustrator CS5.5 Tools Gone

Help! One of the students in my class has changed something on the computer and now Illustrator no longer has any Tools, Windows, Workspaces... I can't even reset them.

Tab didn't work. I tried deleting the folder en_us from the Illustrator > Presets folder. That didn't help. Basically every option under the windows tab has disappeared.

Selection tools gone wild

Anyone know what is going on here?
We're seeing it pretty regularly.
When a selection is made on an image, with lasso or marquee select, this happens:
The only thing we can seem to find to trigger it is changing from Standard to Precision cursors.
Open GL on or off, doesnt matter. Scratch disk is a 2TB Raid with just scratch use.
24GB ram, CS5 12.0.2, OS 10.6.6, SSD drive, 8800GT video card.

Help with using the pen tool

I have a few different problems with the pen tool.
1. When using the pen tool I keep finding that the shape I'm doing is slightly overlapping where I've already gone with the pen tool.
If I try and go over that area again the path I've just drawn then jumps and ruins the shape I was creating.
How can I stop this from happening?
2. Also is there a limit to the amount of paths you can create and add text to? I created two paths and typed on them fine but when I added a third path it refused to type. The cursor didn't change to show I could type and if I did click on the path line and try to type jumped to my other path and typed there. All paths were on different layers and none were overlapping, but it is 3 circles inside each other that get smaller if this makes a difference.
How can I type on the third path?
3. When I have done a path and clicked stroke it is only a thin line. How can I make this line thicker?

Ok, the first example would be something like this. Pretending the lines go elsewhere, say I've drawn a path with the pen tool, gone round the bottom box and that then goes round the two lines going down. So if I go down the one on the left side it hits the previous path I did, but to go up the line on the right side I'd need to go across there. But if I make a point where the two lines meet to do this it then throws the line off elsewhere.
I did have snap vector tools on but it does that without it on.
The next one I was creating a car speedometer so it has lines on the outside, dots inside of that and then, where I've done the blue circle, would be the third path where I then write the numbers in. But I can never write on that third path.
And finally, the pen tool and I think it dd have Shape Dynamics set. I've changed a couple of things and it looks a bit better now so I think that should be ok. Thanks
I know I haven't shown the panels but I haven't got any for the first as it won't go right so I deleted what I was doing. And each thing I've done is on a different layer for the speedometer, all just paths created with the circle tool with the text on.

Is the link tool gone in Acrobat Reader 9? I used to use it in previous versions to create interactive PDF's.

Developer tools for 10.3 (or help compiling for 10.3)

I want to use the 'date' command to adjust the date but the -v (adjust) flag isn't available on the 10.3.9 server where the script needs to run.
So i'm trying to install 'yest' (a date manipulation tool) on the same 10.3 server. (maybe someone has a better idea?)
I've downloaded the latest xcode 3.1 dev tools but it won't install on this 10.3 server. Installer opens but never gets to the main installation window.
i've installed 'yest' on another ppc computer (10.5) and copied the binary to this 10.3 server but it gives errors when running... ("stderrp expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib")
so i'm thinking that i need to compile 'yest' on a 10.3 computer but i can't get the developer tools to install on one. i can't find any older versions of the developer tools online either... and can't find one on an installer cd/dvd.
does anyone know where i can get a 10.3 compatible developer tools installer?
or is there a flag i can use when compiling 'yest' on a 10.5 computer so that it'll work on a 10.3 computer? (i'm compiling using "gcc -o /usr/bin/yest yest-2.7.0.4.c")
any other ideas?

per this url, i copied 4 files from a different 10.3 system to the one i'm trying to compile on. it then worked. i copied the 'yest' binary to the 10.3 server where i want the script to run and now 'yest' works on my 10.3 ppc server.
i think i'll be able to move on now...

Time manipulation

Hi guys,
I have taken a look at some of the Video-copilot tutorials on time manipulation, and have a question or two around After Effects and frame rates.
The Panasonic camera I am using, according to the documentation, can record several frame rates as it has Variable Frame Rate capabilities. Footage shot native to the camera, direct to card only records at around 192mb per second (24 MegaBytes) and I dont believe that, that is very good. If I record to an external device, the same 10 second test results in 1880mb per second (235 MegaBytes). This is obviously a great deal better, and contains a lot more information to allow for more post work.
The problem I am finding, is that according to the documentation, you cannot record higher than 30FPS to an external recording device, as HD-SDI cannot handle data rates greater than 1080/30P. If I use the device ( a samurai recording device) apparently, each frame is automatically embedded as a field into a 1080/50i data stream.
obviously when I import this directly into After Effects, I need to re-interpret the footage and select the correct field first - the motion is then pretty good as slow motion (if imported into a standard 25fps composition - I am working in the land of PAL) with the obvious motion issues (strobing or skewing). My question is this:
Is this the right way to go, or should I record standard 25fps from the camera to the recording device ( at a data rate of 1766mb per second (220.8 Megabytes) ) and purchase a third party time manipulator like Twixtor to do the slow downs?
There is an interresting paragraph in the camera documentation that I dont quite understand though, and I am also not familiar with the software mentioned - if I may, I would like to quote the paragraph (ok, Ill paraphrase) and see if someone can explain it a bit better?
"With post manipulation, you can get 1080/60p out of the AF100. the camera already records at 60 progressive fields per second. when the camera is in 1080/24p or 1080/30p and a frame rate of 60 is selected, the camera records 60 discrete frames each second. the file would have a playback rate of 24p or 30p encoded in it, but what if you changed the playback rate? say, what if you went into Cinema Tools and "Conformed" the footage to have a timebase of 59.94p instead of 29.97p or 23.976p? obviously it would become full fledged, live 1080/60p footage. 60fps played back at 60fps = full screen, full quality 1080/60p. and of course the same applies to 50Hz mode - resulting in full fledged 1080/50p"
The camera settings in Pal-land are PH 1080/50i, PH1080/25P, PH 720/50P and PH720/25p - Since the best quality only give 50i, the paragraph above confuses me a bit, how would I get 1080/50p from it? - of course, I am assuming that the camera is set to 1080/25p and the Frame rate is set to 50FPS to allow the above mentioned outcome. anyway, once again, maybe not an entirely AFter Effects question, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not real sure what you're asking here. If you are intending to do slow-motion then record the highest frame rate you can. If you want time to match real time the footage must be interpretetd at the same frame rate that was used to shoot it. If you want to change the speed you have to be understand what is going to happen when you change the frame rate interpretation. Let me explain.
If you then place 10 seconds of 60 p footage inside a composition that is 20 fps, or 24fps, or 99 fps the shot will still be exactly 10 seconds long. If the frame rate is higher than composition frame rate some of the frames will be dropped. If the frame rate is lower than the frame rate of the composition some of the frames will be duplicated. Motion artifacts from dropping frames are not as noticeable as motion artifacts caused by duplicating frames. Frame blending and other techniques available in After Effects mitigate these problems. Third-party solutions like Twixtor can do a better job than the tools that come with AE but may not be necessary unless you plan to slow footage way way down.
Let's talk first about progressive footage. If the frame rate is higher than the frame rate of your composition, and you're planning to use the built-in tools, the proper technique is to match the frame rate of the composition. If your composition is 24 FPS then interpret the footage at 24 frames per second. If the composition is 30 frames per second or 29.97 FPS then match those numbers. Then ten seconds of 60p footage in a 30fps comp would play for 20 seconds, or be at 1/2 speed. Ten seconds of 60p footage in a 25 fps comp would play for 24 seconds. If you are using AE's built in tools then this is your best option no matter how you want to change the playback time.
If you are using a third-party time manipulation tool like Twixtor, then you must follow their instructions. Twixtor will only work properly if you match the frame rate to the actual frame rate of the footage.
If the original footage is interlaced you have a different kettle of fish. Does 50i footage really have 100 fields per second or are there only 50? Is 60i footage really 60 FPS with 120 fields per second or is it 59.97 fields per second at 29.97 FPS? In both cases the latter is true. There's only one way to know for shure. You separate the fields and set the frame rate to your best guess. Then create a new composition with your footage by dragging it to the new comp icon or selecting the footage and choosing New Comp from Footage. Then you open up the comp settings and double the frame rate of the composition (you can do the math in the field by typing *2 after the value that's there). Then step through the footage one frame at a time using the Page Up key. This will tell you immediately if you've interpreted the frame rate correctly and whether or not the field order is correct.
I haven't run specific tests on your camera or your external recording device but in all likelyhood your 50i footage is 50 fields per second and 25 FPS. IOW, the proper interpretation is most likely 25fps separating fields upper first. Run a test to make sure.
Once you know exactly what you've got, you have three options. My usual technique is to just render this frame doubled comp to a production format so I have no need to deal with interlaced footage and the rest of my production pipeline. The other is to use the frame doubled comp as your footage source for any time manipulation you will be doing making sure that preserve frame rate of nested compositions is turned on. The third option is just to use the properly interpreted footage.
One more thing before I go. If you are using a third party solution you must follow their instructions specifically when you are using interlaced footage. The footage must be properly interpreted for any third-party solutions to work correctly.

Text Manipulation and Variable Data in Photoshop

Our company is getting into variable data printing. There are a few ways to get variable data into photos. I've played with a program called Direct Smile. Its text manipulation tools are rather good. It lays a grid over the text and you can select each grid intersection and pull and push to get the text into the shape you want.
There are other programs that work through InDesign and Photoshop, using scripts to insert the variable data into the Photoshop text layer.
When I tried to warp the text in Photoshop I found that beyond a certain point, you have to flatten the text, at which point, it's no longer a text layer that can accept variable data from a database.
Is there anything like the grid tool in Direct Smile in Photoshop?

I’m unfamiliar with Direct Smile.
But for text-manipulation in Photoshop You might want to consider converting the Text to a Smart Object which can then be warped or treated with the Distort-Filter Displace, all the while maintaining the text-layer within the SO and thusly its editability.
And if I remember correctly one can even make Liquify applicable as a Smart Filter, but one would have to save the Mesh separately … possibly too problematic a solution.
Or You could go via Illustrator which offers Envelope Distort (which provides a grid-based »plasticity«) and then embed the result thereof as a SO in the Photoshop-file. Unfortunately Illustrator doesn’t Script as comfortably as Photoshop in my limited experience and Envelope Distort my be unscriptable altogether.
But if I understand correctly You will want to automate all that stuff, so maybe You should check out the respective Scripting-Fora.
