3D model from green screen

Hi Some of you might know of a youtybe channel called "Corridor Digital" They make great short films. I saw a behind the scenes from one of there videos, the one called Shadow Of Mordor. You can watch it in the link if you want. What I want to know is what they were doing at 14:07 minute of the video. They recorded a sword that was held and rotated in front of a green screen. It was recorded at a 120 FPS. Am I right to assume that they used this footage to make a 3D model of the sword somehow and use that to track the handle of the sword in the actors hands to make the cool stabing effects......? If so, how do you make a 3D model using the green screen footage? And if that is not the case why did they record the sword like that.....? THX in advance

You make the 3D model from the actual prop sword by measuring and creating the model. The reference footage was for color grading and texturing the 3D sword to match the lighting and reflections on location. There are literally hundreds of different ways to generate the texture maps for a 3D model. That is only one option. Many others were probably used. Did you notice that right after the explanation of what they were doing that the guy said "thanks for reminding me" and took out his phone to take more pictures? That is the technique I would have used to get the reflection maps. I probably would have shot something different to pull the lighting model. Look up light probe for 3D. The technique is not a tutorial, it is a semester in film school. I'd go to the forums of what ever 3D app you are using or go to blender.org start digging around.

How to keyout harsh shadows from green screen footage tutorial

Hello!!
I have shot a green screen footage outdoors an two clips where shot with the sun making some very harsh shadows that are impossible to key out. I am attaching two photos so that you can see what I mean. I there any other way to go around this problem without rotoscoping because unfortunately it' s not an option for me to reshoot the scene. Maybe lume key could help but I am not sure...
Any suggestion would be appreciated!! The first image is the original one. The second is with Keylight only and the third is with Keylight and Luma Key together...

Duplicate your layer, key once for the light green, key a second time for the dark green, Output the mattes and combine them to create the final matte. Pre-comp the two shots and use as a garbage matte for the final key by adding a matte choker and making the pre-comp a track matte for your final key.
There are a zillion other ways but Here's what the combined matte looks like from your screenshot.

Green Screen and Electronics with shiny surfaces...

Not sure if the Lounge is the place to ask this one, but where I'm at the client doesn't have the budget to facilitate a pro making 3D models of the products they're advertising, but he wants them spinning. The products are needed with alpha. My idea was to try and put em on a spinning green pedistal on green screen with lights trying to get rid of green reflections. I'm probably on the wrong path here, so I'm asking for advice before embarking on what could be an epic fail(not that I still won't try it)...

This is a similar problem as "Removing Tint from Green Screen" (previous post). Any shiny surface will naturally reflect the background/sky etc. If you spin your objects against green that is what they will reflect. However when you replace the green with whatever background you choose the shiny objects will appear to reflect that new back, and that should look OK in many cases because that is what shiny objects do anyway. Of course the new back will not be distorted appropriately, specially notorious if the objects have curved surfaces but if the reflective areas are confined to a small part of the image this won't be a problem, and if you really want to deal with this then you can use "warp" to manipulate that part of the reflection.
Normally when you photograph a reflective product is better to create a "tent" that surrounds it and illuminate the object/product throught the material of the tent (usually thin white fabric or diffusion material). Even large objects like automoviles are photographed this way to emphasize their aereodynamic shape (so that it is not broken by unwanted reflections.

Pulling Green Screen.

Hello all.
Recently I was given a job to extract people from green screen shots. There are forty different photos, thus I'm trying to stream line this process. I'm not having much luck though. I've used the color range option, but the hair is the real problem because it leaves a greenish halo in the different strands.
I've also done a trick by switching to LAB color mode, duplicating the "a channel" & adjusting the levels until you achieve an extreme contrast & creating a mask that way. It's worked the best, but it still takes some time & there is still some green present.
My brother uses After Effects quite a bit because he's in video production. He too uses green screen, but it's so simple to pull in After Effects vs. Photoshop. Does anyone know of any other tricks or tips to really pull the green behind someone. Unfortunately, the green screen doesn't appear to be too evenly lit, so there are different shades of green throughout. The real problem is the hair. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Understand also that TRUE chromakey is an integrated hardware/software system, and has some strict set up and calibration requirements in order to produce the best results.
With what you want to do, you can succeed in ditching 99.99999% of the background, and get nice smooth edges, but then you have to worry about objects taking on and reflecting the color of the backdrop they're shot against.
That's where it can get tricky.
I wish I could offer a one-size-fits-all solution, but there isn't one. Good studio shots with expert lighting techniques go a long way toward mitigating the problem in the first place. It's a real art, and not many folks are able to manage it well.

I would like to change my cusor from vertical bar to block form, such as used on old green screens

In IE the cursor can be changed to a block form, I can't find a way to do this with Firefox, the block form is an old carry back from the days of the old "green screens"

How to key a green screen separately from motion background

Using FCP7. I have an animated background running throughout the sequence (it's on Video Track 1).
When I place a greeenscreen interview on top of that (on Video Track 3) and a solid color background for the key behind that (on Video Track 2), the solid color background covers up the animation.
How do I key the interview and maintain the animated background?
Please tell me I don't have to build it as separate sequences.

It is not clear from your post what you are trying to do.
Screen shots would help.
If you want the area that is green on track 3 to reveal the animation, why are you putting a solid background on V2?
If the animation has transparency, and is also supposed to be over the the solid color background, then the order for the tracks should be:
V3 - Video with green screen with keyed applied
V2- Animation
V1- Color Background

How can I use iMovie on my ipad mini to create a video from still shots using a green screen?

In my physics class, I am doing a project where we are taking pictures to create a movie, and we are usign a green screen. I know that iMovie on the mac devices is able to transfer photos and videos from a green screen so that you are able to insert backgrounds where the green screen is. Is there any way to be able to change the settings on the iPad mini to be able to do the same things with a green screen and backgrounds?

Also, I tried changing my primary email on Fb to what it was years ago, etc and I still wasn't able to delete the account.

I am not sure if the above link is going to help you though. Is this footage you shot yourself? If so what sort of camera, and how was the BG lit? I ask as chroma keying can be tricky to get right, and I understand that DSLR footage is far from ideal for chroma key for instance. I use a Canon XF300 which records with a 50mb/s 4:2:2 codec, which works well for chroma key.

Raindrop from above, green screen help?

I want to create a 1 minute clip of a raindrop falling to earth and landing on a flower head from a different angle in slow motion but do not know how to go about doing this. The shot from a low angle of the flower being hit is easy enough to do, however falling towards the flower from above will be much trickier. Is there a way that I can maybe take a video of it falling on to a green screen and adding my own backdrop behind? If so how do I go about doing this. I have plenty of equipment available to me, just the lack of knowledge with adobe premiere and editing software. Cheers in advance!! (i have cs5.5)

You will need a camera like a Red or even a Varicam to shoot that. 120fps or more is needed to catch the real thing. Or 60fps if you have Twixtor.
But the only thing that needs to be real is the final 2ft of the fall and the imapct on the flower. You can get a pretty good rain drop by generating it in something like Cinema 4D and following that drop with a virtual cam.
But if you dont have C4D then do this.
Get a latter and a sturdy mount for the cam to be upside down and well supported. (10 ways to do that) We used a pain of glass on 2x4's to hold the camera above the ground to film a bottle dropping and breaking in semi slow mo.
For the rain drop you will have to use a glass pain over a camera pointed directly at the sky. Then climb a latter and drop the liquid on to that pain as close to middle as possible. (20 takes easy)
Then you can show the drop from 3 angles; over head, the ground looking up and impact from whatever angle does best.
Liquid:
Try water but i am sure you will need to mix KY Jelly with water to make it thicker and so that it will hold its form during the fall.
Try to find something that will create the largest possible rain drop. The liquid having a thicker viscosity will help. Experiment with it.

Sounds like you may have a hardware problem since it won't read from DVD, and it is only a year and a half old. Hopefully all it is, is bad RAM*:

Trying to composite from Lightwave 3D using Green Screen

I am trying to do a simple picture crawl across the bottom of my video. First I tried using a transparent.png file that was 2240x540 and using the ken burns effect cropped it to move across the screen. This worked to an extent. The only problem is that imovie scaled the resolution to match the horizontal measurement of 960 pixels. leaving the image in a very low resolution. On that looked horrible.
Second try: I own a copy of Lightwave 3D 9.6. I love this program! I figured I could output video that had the crawling photos across the bottom, with green screen as the background. I output it in Apple Intermediate Format for ease of import. and when I place my crawl as a b-role/green-screen the entire image disappears.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. I would love to figure this out so that I can composite my 3D animations on top of my imovies. I love the simplicity yet accuracy of the new iMovie 09. I just want to figure this out.
Any help would be appreciated.

The green screen feature is designed to work with camcorders, so my advice would be to make sure you are using a frame rate like a camcorder (either 29.97fps or 25fps for Pal.
Also, a perfect green background doesn't seem to work very well. Try a gradient or shades of green like a real greenscreen would have (i.e. shadows, imperfections).

Moving a subject from left to right if shot in front of green screen

Here's my question:
If I shoot an interview with someone who sits right in front of a green screen in the middle, is there any way I can move that person, and that person only, to the left or right of the frame after it's shot? I have seen it in VH1 and it looks great. Do I have to roroscope? Would I have to shoot the interview 3 times in front of the green screen, One on the left side, One on the right side, and one in the middle?

Well, assuming that you are keying out the entire background, you're left with the subject pretty much just floating in space. So its pretty simple to just move your subject layer to either side of the frame, independent of whatever background layer you plan to put behind him/her.
Of course, as you move this person, their eyeline may appear as if they're looking at different subjects.
If you have no keyed out the entire background, I'm afraid you are left to play with masks.

FCPX: When applying the keyer to green screen, is there a way to change the resulting color from black to another color (cream, blue, etc)?

Currently working on a project where I shot various video tributes in front of a green screen. When using the keyer in FCPX, the resulting image is represented by a black background instead of a green one. I'd like to change that color to blue, tan or something else so that when I apply a picture in a portion of the background, the remaining background looks fine. More specifically, I plan to put images over the right shoulder of each person in the video. The image will only take up about 1/4 of the background and the rest of it currently just looks like a black screen. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Tom now I have another follow-up. So i have the original green screen with the keyer applied which, emptied the background. Now I've applied a color generator below that in the timeline and it generates a color. How do I now go back and add the photo in the upper right corner of the clip? Ultimatly the goal is to have the subject, with the color backdrop and a photo above their right shoulder.
