3D paint symmetry in CS4/CS5 PS Extended?

I've been importing .obj models from Maya into Photoshop and experimenting with the 3D paint tools. My question is: is there any way to paint one side and have the other side follow your paint symmetrically? The features really are not much of a help if I can't mirror my paint across an axis. I assume since I've found nothing in Photoshop's help or the 3D paint tool that I need to do something in Maya in order to make this work, or is it an issue on Photoshop's end (or one I can deal with on PS's end)?

Photoshop's 3D painting relies on the UV mapping set on the model. The ability to change UV properties within Ps is quite limited, however. So you can get symetrical painting but it requires setting up the UVs in the modeling application to apply it. For a quick simple CS5 example look at 3D> New Shape from Layer> Cube Wrap. Painting on just one face will repeat the stroke on the other five faces. Ps CS4 didn't include this model, but it can be used from CS5 if you have access.

Can't select or edit layer mask in CS5.1 extended

In our class, we have photoshop CS5 on MACs
I started a project in class which involves creating a layer mask. I was about done with the mask, but brought it home to finish. I opened the file on my WIN XP running photoshop CS5.1 extended, which I installed this morning. In class I was able to click on the mask to select it, then use the brush to edit the details, painting black or white as needed to refine the edge.
When I brought the .psd file home and opened it in the newer version of Photoshop, it won't allow me to select the mask for editing. I selected the layer then clicked on the mask thumbnail in the layer pallette but didn't see the corner outlines that usually show when the layer thumbnail is selected. When I tried brushing on what I thought was the mask (of the layer selected) I got the pink overlay as is usually seen in quickmask. (fore and background colors were black and white).
Does v5.1 behave differently with masks from v5.0? I didn't change any of the factory default settings and in class it is standard practice to reset to the default when we begin.

I didn't turn quickmask on. I just loaded the file from my flash drive and first thing I tried was to select the layer mask. I'll have to try another file to see if PS is starting in quickmask mode itself.
I had an inkling I was in quickmask mode from the pink painting, but hadn't selected it and didn't know about the q hotkey. newbie here just a few weeks into the intro course.

As a long-time Elements user who had planned to purchase Photoshop CS4, CS5 or CS6 right before the Cloud changed everything, why can't I get the cloud subscription for $9.99? This makes me want to just buy an older disk on EBay or elsewhere.

Using Photoshop CS4/CS5 and Lightroom 2/3 on Win 7 vs OSX

I do NOT want to re-ignite the no-win discussion of pc vs mac. Now that CS5 is announced, yet again as I preprare to upgrade from CS4, I ask if I should convert fromWin7 64-bit on a PC to MAC Pro running OSX. I currently run a WIN 7 64-bit PC with 8 GB Ram. I would consider buying a MAC PRO with 8 GB RAM. The machine(s) are used strictly for image processing, no general office work or general internet surfing except as relates to supporting my software, etc.
I don't want to discuss PC vs MaC but I would like to understand the limits, advantages/disadvantages of one platform vs the other as specifically relates to CS4/CS5 and/or Lightroom 2/3. In other words are there functions or processes that I can do on one platform and not the other, or do better on one compared to the other, not does one cost more than the other any comments or help?? As a casual user of CS products, I find no substantive differences between using them on a Mac vs. PC. I can cross post this question over to the Photoshop forum (originally posted to the Photoshop.com web site forum, which is not just about the desktop app).
It's probably going to become a Mac vs. PC discussion, since the question is inherently 'which is better', but hopefully people will remain objective and constructive!

CS6 Beta Modifies CS4 & CS5 Bridge File Associations (W7 Pro 64Bit SP1)

Symptoms:
After installing CS6 including bridge CS6 onto a W7 pro 64Bit Machine with SP1.
The File associations in the existing copies of CS4 and CS5 bridge are updated to make the CS6 Beta the default programme for opening the majority of file types from either CS4 or CS5 bridge.
When right clicking ona file from CS4/5 bridge only the option of opening in CS6 is presented
Expected Bahaviour:
I expected that CS6 would be the default programme launched from CS6 bridge but that CS4/CS5 would remain the default programmes launched from their own versions of bridge.
Setting CS6 as the default file association in previous versions of bridge makes no sense at the Beta stage, as it interupts a clean migration back to existing workflow.
I would also question the value in not preserving the existing file associations in prior versions of bridge in the final CS6 release, as there are cases when it might be desirable to go back to a previous version of CS, in which case opening that version of bridge and launching directly into the prior versions of CS is very desirable.
Is there anyway to quickly restore the previous associations in CS4/CS5 bridge and be sure that they are exactly the same as prior to the CS6 beta install ?

Sorry for the noise. I misunderstood your depth of knowlege and what you had tried. I also committed the sin of not testing the procedure all the way through because I did not want to change the association on my computer. I get the same behavior.

UserChoice seems to be added when I made the association choice. Note that it points into Applications with a non-version specific Photoshop.exe. Within HKLM\....\Applications there is only one Photoshop.exe -- no version -- and that entry points to CS6.
I believe that explains why the browsed to association is CS6. It does not explain why it would be set up that way. Probably has something to do with Windows special handling of certain file extensions. Beyond my depth and tells me I am not going to find a solution.

Not able to open Canon 6D raw files in PS CS5.1 Extended Version 64 Bit

Hey there. I'm using Photoshop CS5.1 Extended Version 64 Bit. I want to work with raw pictures, shot on a Canon 6D. I have to install the camera raw plug in. But It doesn't work. Could somebody help me please? It's very important too know it soon.

Cannon 6D requires a minimum of ACR 7.3. If you are using Photoshop CS5.1 i would advice you to use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the images and then use it in Photoshop.

Opening jpeg files in CS5.1 extended

I have installed (and re-installed) CS5.1 extended. I can open Raw files but when I try to open a jpeg it opens a dialogue box labelled Camera raw 6.3 jpeg with the image in it . When I then try to open the file from there into the main CS5 work area I just get a corrupted image. I previously had the education version installed pending verification which worked perfectly.

In photoshop got to Edit>Preferences>Camera Raw (Photoshop>Preferences on a mac) and select disable jpeg and tiff support so the jpegs and tiffs open normally into photoshop.
If the files still look corrupted in photoshop, you might need to update the drivers for your video card from the card makers site not microsoft.
As an experiment if opening the jpegs without camera raw still results in corrupt looking files, you can go to Edit>Preferences>Performance and uncheck
Enable OpenGL drawing and see if that makes a difference, but that's not a fix and you still might need to update your video card drivers.

Adobe software is conflictive when you use Migration Assistant because their applications don't work properly after migration. If you keep the DVDs or the installers of your software, use them to reinstall all your Adobe applications and they should start working correctly

How can you tell what version of Illustrator (Ver. 10, CS4, CS5, CC Ver.17, etc.) saved artwork is in?

Our company needs to save artwork we create in Illustrator in different versions depending on our various client's needs. Is there anyway to know what version of Illustrator (Version 10, CS4, CS5, CC Version17, etc.) saved artwork is in? When we view preferences it just shows the current version of the application not the version the individual artwork is saved at. Any advise would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

Photoshop CS5.1 Extended: Could not complete your request because there are too many Files Open

I saved a file last night and now this morning I get an error message stating: "Photoshop CS5.1 Extended: Could not complete your request because there are too many Files Open. Try closing some windows and try again.". I've rebooted the system and made sure Photoshop was the only program running and that there were no other files open prior to trying to open my file. I increased Photoshops ram usage, checked the OpenGL settings, 3D and VRAM settings, cleared my temp files and am at a loss for opening this file.
System Specs:
Win 7 64
6 core I7 processor
32gb Ram
3GB VRAM
600gb free space on 7200 rpm drive
File specs:
1 3D object replicated maybe 5 times (yes, I should have rasterized them, and will do that to 4 of them if I get the file open)
Maybe 8 textures
Not sure how many total layers.
Is there anyway to get Photoshop to reopen this file?

No, more VRAM is useless. I had the same thought as you so I tried with a friend's computer with 3GB of VRAM for 8GB RAM (mine has 1GB VRAM for 16GB RAM). Still got the same error message. Sorry guys but our files are lost until Adobe fix the error in Photoshop code. I hope in the future they will find a way to either fix this error or give a clear limitation, it is really a shame such a dangerous problem exists and persists for more than 3 photoshop gen.
Still you may be able to have at least a flat image of your latest file by trying to open the file as smart object. I started my work over by doing that. Not a lot but better than nothing.
However for my new file I am trying something different : Each time I think a 3D file is final, I do not rasterize it but make it into a smart object and save the new smart object into a single separated .psd file. If any change is needed I can still edit all of my 3D objects by opening them separately. So far it works, the global file is lighter with few to no 3D objects inside but I will not say it is a 100% no-risk method yet.
Last advice I can give everyone : Before closing the file you are working on, save it as a copy (File / Save as... and check 'As copy' in the options below) then with your main file still open, try to open the copy. You may need a lot of memory if your file is heavy but still if the dreaded error message appears when you try to open the copy then remove or rasterize some 3D objects in your main one. Save again as copy and try to open the copy until you do not get the message anymore.

Photoshop CS4 & CS5: Fullscreen + Taskbar ?

Hi all!
Does anyone find a solution for the bug (for me it is) in Photoshop CS4 & CS5 - in Fullscreen mode the taskbar is no visible (MS Windows)?
In case someone from Adobe read this - COM'ON PEOPLE!!! IS NOT SO HARD TO FIX THIS!!! ADD A SIMPLE CHECK BOX IN OPTIONS, FOR USERS THAT NEEEEEED THEIR TASKBAR IN FULLSCREEN! how many complains do you need to fix this!?? Think again... a lot of people are stuck to CS3 just for this problem!

Gee, thanks a pantload, Dr Misfit, assuming you're talking about my suggestion to use Photoshop in a Restored window (i.e., in a window not occupying the full screen).
Oh, and you're also welcome for the link I provided to a tool that forces the Windows 7 Taskbar to be on top.
The *only* downside to using Photoshop in Restored view that's been identified, and I agree that it's not pleasant, is that in Restored view and using Tabs you're prevented from panning an image around to where you want it if it fits entirely within the window. So instead of working in the center of your screen you might have to work offset toward the corner. Aw. Now THAT's what I call a Big Deal compared to missing those all important Skype calls from your girlfriend.
I'm not against you working the way you want - it'd be just peachy if it worked just the way you like - but I'm here to tell you it's really, really not going to get changed in the current version just for you and the other three people on the planet who are for some reason jumping up and down about it. Adobe ain't Burger King. But someone who actually DID know something about Adobe and Photoshop would already know that.
You want to see the Taskbar now, work in Restored view. Simple as that. Get over it.
And have a little more respect for the people who try to help you for no reward other than the satisfaction of having helped someone.
