3D PSD file import : how to change 3D anchor point in AE ? Challenge..!

Hello everyone,
I've successfully imported a 3D file from Photoshop Extended CS4 into AE CS4. In AE, I can sucessfully animate rotation of the 3D object.
Here's the problem : I cannot change the 3D object's anchor point. I've tried changing the anchor point's coordinates on the controller layer of the 3D object layer, the numers change, but the anchor point remains at its initial position, as if it was locked.
I also thought changing the anchor point in PS Extended before importing the file into AE, but PS Extended does not seem to have an anchor point changing tool.
So I even reasoned back one step : changing the anchor point in my 3D software since the beginning. Well, not possible because PS Extended seems to create an average position for the anchor point when impoting a 3D file from a third party software. So useless changing the coordinates in the 3D software.
Photoshop Extended 3D is the only possible workflow to import 3D objects into AE that I know of.
So, is is possible to change the 3D anchor point directly in After Effects ? What blocks that point from being changed ?
This is quite a challenging problem, good luck for finding a solution ! I'm very sure that this technique is commonly needed and used when working in 3D, and that it will be of great help for many designers that want 3D in After Effects !
Thanks again !
Note : please do not confuse simple After Effects standard 3D layer, with the 3D PSD file import layer, these are two totally different types

Any further forward with this anyone?
This is driving me insane as well...
I'm trying to create a simple comp within AE and have my clients logo fly on behind their text while rotating in 3D space.
The idea is for it to rotate on the X axis, but rotate within the logo itself (straight through the axis within the logo itself)
But when I try to rotate it, the AP is about 2.5 "logo depths" away from the logo, so when the rotation of any axis starts it looks ridiculous.
Are Adobe really trying to tell us that moving the AP is not possible within AE for imported Live Photoshop PSD files?
Hopefully a solution comes along soon as I cannot for the life of me figure out a workaround to the problem......
Cheers,
Paul.

  • Can you change the anchor point of a swf in CP5.5?

I have created a small swf in Flash and have published it.
I've imported the swf into CP5.5 and applied an effect of anti clockwise rotate and assymetric zoom out in an effort to get it to spiral backwards into oblivion.
However, it seems to rotate the swf from the top left corner.
Is there a way to change this anchor point to the centre of the swf?
    Regards

    Col,
The anchor point of an object in Captivate is always the top left corner of the bounding box. No way to change it (have been pleading for that since long). Only exceptions are Rotate and motion effects, where the center is used.

  • PSD file import: always the same layers no matter what psd file

So, another problem has just popped up! Picture is, I imported a psd file into ae and made a cool vid out of it, which is all well and good. However, I decided to do a new one and as I imported the NEW psd file (as in COMPLETELY new, different file name with different drawings, different layer names etc) into ae... surprise surprise! The OLD psd file is displayed in the ae screen (???) It says it has imported my new psd file, but the layers and images displayed are from the old one (which, as I said, has nothing to do with the new one, except in matching canvas size).
    Thanks!

How did you import and what exactly are you viewing? The source view? The comp view? The timeline layer view? Did you use "File --> Replace Footage"? Naturally, unless you actually replaced the elements, the latter two will keep showing your original PSD as they are referenced by the original project. Otherwise the source view should correctly reflect your new document. That aside I seem to vaguely rember an issue with this in some older version of AE (something with AE misinterpreting paths for identically named layers in different files), but since you did not make any mention of your AE version nor platform, operating system or hardware, it will be impossible for anyone to be more specific....

  • PSD file import. Premiere doesn't show every picture?

Hey guys, I'm new to all this, so please go on and show me the right direction if I'm wrong here
I'm working on a project since a few months and I'm using the same Premiere File and the same PSD file since then.
Of course I'm changing the PSD a few times to, so I can actually put in more pictures in Premiere and do stuff with them!
But now, as my PSD file got a bit larger, much more folders, much more pictures, Premiere doesn't want to show me
every single picture!! What is wrong? Do I do something wrong now? Is it really because of the psd file being a bit bigger now?
If you need anymore information don't hesitate to contact me!
    Greetings and happy eastern!

    thanks for the advice JSS1138!
That is highly frustrating if I save every single picture, but if I haven't any choice I have to do that.
    Is there any other option?

  • PSD Files Size, how big is to big

We are creating some scrolls using PSDs and adding motion to them. We have one scroll that is 720X20,016 pixels and it keeps crashing FCP. Our PSD Files that ar 720X10,000 work fine. Any way to get a big scroll (20,000 pixels long) to work?

    For the pure research possibilities,
Take your 720x10,000 file that already has text etc and create a series of new files from it in 100 pixel increments using rescale or expand canvas.
You should have files that start at 720x10,100 and go up in 100 pixel increments 10,200/ 10,300 etc
Test them one by one until the system crashes.
    Results?

  • How to change the registration point on a shape

    Hi,
Is there a way to change the registration point on a shape
created in Director? For instance, I created a filled oval, and by
default Director sets the top left corner of the surrounding square
as the registration point. Nevertheless, I need to place that
registration point at the center of the oval.
    Best regards.

Hi, if you create a shape vector from director, the reg point
is in the center of it; if you import a vector created in other
aplication (flash), the regpoint is in the top left corner. To
change the regpoint of an imported shape, try this:
put your shape in the stage in x,y = 0,0 position, then, if
your shape rect is 12,8 pixs, and if you want to move the regpoint
    to the center of it
    on preparemovie me
    member("yourshape").regpoint = point(6,4)
    end
play and stop the movie, your shape will change the regpoint
    to 6,4
remove the script, and that's all.
    Best regards.

  • Cropping: image disappears; how to change mm to points

A couple of issues I don't know how to resolve...One, when I crop an image, the image totally disappears and the window reduces to a tiny square on the screen. there is nothing there, even when enlarged. What is happening and how can it be fixed? The other is a minor annoyance...my font size changed to mm, instead of poitns and I don't know how to change it back. Thanks!

    Hi, Lettergirl!
Your first issue, Cropping, may be a few things, but your crop may be set to a very small value. With your Crop Tool active, take a look at your Options Bar. Are there any values in the text fields? If so, press the reset button on the right, circled below.
As for the second issue, this can be resolved in your preferences. Press Command K to enter your Preferences, then click on Units & Rulers on the left. Now you can change the default Type unit.
Let us know if that helps!

  • Photoshop extended : change 3D anchor point

    Hi everybody,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the 3D anchor point's position in Photoshop Extended CS4 3D mode. I just can't imagine that the development team would have forgotten such an important feature, so I guess it's just that I haven't found it !
    Thanks for your help

    Yes with pleasure !
Photoshop Extended CS4 permits you to open 3D files that have been created with a third party software like Cinema 4D, 3DS Studio Max, etc.
When you import one of these file formats in PS Extended CS4 you are able to look at your 3D object by rotating it around. When you rotate your object in 3 dimensions, the rotation occurs around one point ; this point is called the anchor point.
In 3D, when you animate an object, you want it to rotate around specific points. For example, lets say you have an arm ; you want it to rotate around the shoulder, but not in the middle of the forearm. So what you do is that you place the anchor point (point where your object will rotate around) at the position of the shoulder. Once that done, you can use your rotation tool to rotate your 3D arm, and it will rotate around the shoulder.
The problem here is that there seems to be no way to change the position of the anchor point (point where the 3D object rotates around). When you import a 3D file into PS Extended CS4, it seems like an average position for the anchor point is calculated and then left that way.
So that's why I simply want to know if anybody has expertise in this domain, or knowledge of any function in PS Extended that I might have not seen.
Thanks again for your interest !

  • How can I use anchor points in Photoshop CC?

I'm using a trial version of Photoshop CC and I am trying to put a formed border around some text. I was able to do this with my other Photoshop program with manipulating anchor points. The CC version is layed out differently. How can I use and form anchor points?

Hi Sheryl.  I must admit, I looked at your post earlier, and it was too obscure to get a handle on (did I really just say 'handle'? ).  But I think I can see where you are coming from now.  Yes, the manipulation of paths has changed a wee bit with CC, but it is pretty intuitive, and a lot of it will still work fine using your old methodology.
Take a look at some of these Julieanne Kost blog posts
    https://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/tag/path-selection-tool
I find the most reliable way to make individual point selection work first time every time, is to select the Direct Selection tool > and with the shape/path layer selected, drag a tiny marquee around your target point.  You can then click drag that point to edit the shape or path.
But there are so many ways to do the sort of thing you are talking about.  If you make a copy of the text layer, and make the lower of the two in the layer stack bigger (Free Transform with Alt Shift) you can then turn that lower text layer into a path or shape to manipulate it.
Or you could add a broad stroke around the text on a new layer.  Ctrl click the stroke to load it as a selection, and turn the selection into a path using the icon at the bottom of the Paths panel, and then manipulate its points.  If you want to make the stroke a solid filled layer, then I don't know of a better way than dragging a marquee around the inner points wth Direct Selection tool, and hitting Delete.
It's an interesting subject, so please keep asking about anything you are not sure about.

  • How to align an anchor point with an object?

I have a shape I made with the pen tool, and now I want to align one anchor point of the shape with the middle of a rectangle. How can I do this? It doesn't seem like I can do what I do for objects, which is select both objects, click the object I want to align to, and hit align. If I'm not describing this properly let me know and I can try to clarify.

    ...another way...
    1. grab the Rectangle Tool
    2. move your mouse on top of the Anchor you wish to align
    3. draw a rectangle wider than the shape, centered on the Anchor
         - click and drag to draw a rectangle (don't release yet),
         - then press Alt to make it centered on top of the anchor,
         - release the mouse, then the Alt key.
    4. select both your shape and the rectangle
    5. press Ctrl+G to group them
    6. select both, the newly created group and the rectangle
    7. align your shapes
    8. ungroup and delete your temporary rectangle
    9. to align vertically, make your temp rectangle wider and taller than your shape.

  • How to convert an anchor point to have a single control point...

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to convert an existing anchor point on a path from a dual control point with directional handles either side of the point to a single control point with one directional handle?
In Illustrator this is easy, all you do is drag one directional handle into the anchor point and it deletes that handle leaving just the other handle to control the shape.
In Photoshop this appears to be much harder to achieve as dragging the handle into the anchor point doesn't work and no matter what combination of keyboard shortcuts I've tried I'm not able to get rid of just one of the handles.
I am able to achieve what I want by splitting the path then Alt clicking on the end point of the path but this strikes me as being really clumsy compared to Illustrator's perfect solution. Even InDesign works better, as you just Alt Click on the directional handle once and it deletes it.
What seems totally bewildering is why all these pieces of software (made by the same people) work differently?

Yes it seems your suggestion to drag the directional point so that it sits directly on top of the anchor point is the best one can do. It doesn't actually delete the direction point like it does in AI merely makes the direction point so small it doesn't actually do anything. Not ideal really.
Maybe all the separate development teams should meet up for a coffee some time and just iron out all these indifferences, I reckon they could get it done in an afternoon, I'd be happy to write them a list. And don't even get me started on how the Workspaces differ from app to app!
