3ds Max crashes using Quadro 1000M card on battery
If I run 3ds Max 2012 on the Quadro 1000M card with the power adaptor plugged in it runs fine. If I unplug the power while the program is running, or start the program under battery power the program will run for a few seconds then freeze.
Running under the Intel graphics works fine, however the purpose of having a workstation class laptop is to take advantage of the inproved graphics option.
The W520 is listed as 3ds Max "certified" by Autodesk. I have all the latest Lenovo and Windows drivers, as well as the latest BIOS installed as of 1/10/2012.
Is anyone else having issues with applications crashing while using Quadro graphics on battery power?

hey Senorpablo,
welcome to the forums
The driver version for your Quadro is at 8.17.12.7593 ? If not update it here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS013693
And bios is at 1.34 ? The update is here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018884
Since this only happens for this particular program, try reinstalling 3ds Max and when you reinstall; set your unit to diagnostic mode via msconfig before doing so.
at the same time check with the Autodesk forum, there might be other uses who has the Quadro 1000m on their system who is experiencing the same symptom or maybe a patch is available for this.

How can I tell if I'm using my discrete Quadro 1000M GPU?
I just recieved my w520 in the mail today, and I have no idea how I can tell when the optimus kicks in or if it's even using the discrete card. I already downloaded the driver for the 1000m. Anyone know how I can check what card it's using?
See File Edit Desktop Help in the menubar. Select 'Desktop' and look there in the dropdown menu :-)
You can use 'autoselect' for general use, discrete for performance. Most people suggest autoselect and changing it when you need to, or better just go to the menu I mentioned and select 'Add run on graphics processor' to context menu then you can select the gpu to use from explorer.
What you mentioned, 3D Setting, Manage 3D settings under Select a task is another place you can select which processor to use by clicking program settings on the right and creating a profile for the app you intend to run.
Btw what do you mean on your question then? Either the activity monitor shows it running on the Nvidia gpu or it's not. If you wish lower level information on how this works you might wish to peruse some doc on Nvidia's Optimus switching, it may help you but I think the gpu monitor is what you want :-). Basically with our w520s if it is on the external display it will be run on the discrete gpu (I think I read the external video connectors go to the discrete card), if you have your laptop lid open, you could select Nvidia or integrated. The driver can also override your selection. This is my rough understanding of how our systems are wired and how things work. Someone add to/or correct this if they wish. You may wish to look for some articles/discussion on the hardware switching/muxing and how that works between the gpus. I need to reread it all myself. -
Never used Bootcamp- need to install 3ds Max program?
Latest version of 10.5. I have never used bootcamp/fusion/ any windows side of the mac ever. I am now being told I need to install 3ds max on my Mac. Company not supporting the PC side anymore- plus my PC is beat and could not run 3ds max.
Someone educate me about the process? I have not touched a PC in over 10-12 years.
Any tutorials out there explaining how to run bootcamp, how to install the Windows OS?You need anti-virus software in the Windows system for sure. However, if you're asking whether the Mac system needs anti-virus software, the answer is that it doesn't need it any more than it normally would. The presence of a Windows system does not increase the threat of Mac malware in the slightest.
For more information about the need for Mac malware, see my Mac Malware Guide. -
Hi everyone,
i just want to confirm if there will be new Quadro cards to be released some time in the following weeks/months..
I saw on the other thread, "The FX4800 is end-of-life, the successor is expected to be announced this month.... - Harm Millaard"
I search all over the internet and i couldn't find any news about the "new" quadro cards.
I was keeping an eye on the Quadro FX 3800/4800. Should i hold off for now until Nvidia announces the release of their "new" Quadro cards?
i am using AutoCAD, 3ds max, Adobe After Effects CS5, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.
Thank you very much.
P.S. Thank you, Harm for posting a lot of incredible information about video editing =)
-Markyou are far better off with the 470 than a 3800/4800.
the 3800/4800 are based on the GTX 260
the newer Quadros will be based on 470/480 with only the most expensive one begin the 480.
EG: the 5800 is a 285
the 470 will be supported with the next update coming soon
so dont waste your money

What is the best Macbook Pro for 3Ds Max?
I've been searching the ideal laptop for my job. My software is Autodesk 3DS Max. I know it's for Windows but my friends use the same software and they're using Macbook Pro bootcamp as well but it crashed every now & then. I need a laptop that is light weight, has a video card and a screen that is perfect for graphics. Reviews on the Macbook Pro Retina are quite positive but I read about the ghost screen, lags etc. :-/
The 13 inch wont do you much good in terms of Graphic rendering and transcoding for the following apps, AutoCAD, FCS, Premiere CS5. The 15" however has a dedicated GPU and also an integrated GPU, if I were you I would go for the high-end 15" Macbook Pro. Just look at the specs.....

NX6600 VTD128 Diamond and 3ds Max 6
Hi,
I bought NX 6600 VTD128 Diamond edition AGP Graphic adapter to replace my old Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9200 because it was too slow for use in 3ds Max. I'm working with 3d models with large number of polygons (usually about 1,5 million) and I thought that NX6600 VTD128 would provide comfortable viewport speed in model development process but it haven't done so. It's still quite slow, far from my expectations. So, is this usual, am I expecting too much from this card and shouldn't it be much faster than ATI Radeon 9200 since it costs 2,5 tames as much? Would NX6600GT do significantly better in this situation? What VGA card characteristic is the most responsible for this kind of speed?
My computer is Epox 8RDA+ nForce2 Dual Channel motherboard, AMD Barton 2500+ CPU, 2x512 MB Kingston RAM, WDC 7200 rps 8 MB cash 80 GB HD and I'm using Wacom Intuos3 graphic tablet. WIn XP Pro SP1Quote from: atomic on 17-July-05, 18:41:42
Thank you for your reply. I'm still confused, characteristics for those two cards that can be found at MSI web site
are the same and only difference I could find is CPU and memory clock (NX6600 Diamond 400/800 and NX6600GT
500/1000) is 100 mhz enough to feel the diference?
Did you overclock your 6600GT?
I'd like to get my hands on a Quadro but unfortunately this is all I can afford...
The NX6600 Diamond comes already overclocked.... my 6600GT can be OC to 550+/1300 easily without any voltage or cooling modification. I 'm very lucky because my VGA comes with 1.6ns memory (Same as the 6800U ) that helps to get higher OC , but the normal overclock for a 6600gt is around 560/1180
Run some benchemarks like 3Dmark03 and compare it with my scores:
3DMark 03
Default clocks: 8493pts
530/1200: 9350pts
550/1300: 9714pts -
Which iMac 27 upgrades for Autodesk Revit and 3ds Max
Hi,
I am an architecture student and I'm about to purchase a iMac 27. I will be using bootcamp to run Revit and 3ds Max and was wondering what upgrades I should make (if any).
512GB SSD or a 1TB fusion drive
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 or a 3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB, 16GB or 32GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
ThanksI don't have CS6...
1) I would max out the video card. FCP X and Motion 5 uses the GPU over the CPU for processing power. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
2) FCP X and Motion 5 will use all the ram you can throw at it. I have 16 GB of ram and both programs at times uses all 16 GB of ram. I really should bump up my ram to 32 GB. I would say 16 GB is the minimum for video.
3) The processor would be last on my list. Computers are really fast even with an i5 processor. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
This is the iMac I bought last year:
27" iMc mid-2011
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Imac i5 3.2ghz upgraded 24ram bootcamp sketchup and 3ds max
Hi guys
Im from singapore and 3mths ago bought an imac i5 3.2ghz upgraded 24ram running sketchup and bootcamp+3ds max.
Currently the 3ds max is running fine, with a slight lag in speed (acceptable).
However, its running sketchup via ios that is laggy and slow, making med to large 3d models very slow and laggy to use.
Anyone had similar experience? Is it the video card issue? If changing the video card can help, what brand then would be suitable?
I really hope not to sell the i5 and buy the i7...
All comments will be appreciated.
Thanks!
DarrenYou cannot replace/upgrade graphics cards as they are soldered onto the logic board; even if they weren't, they'd need to be replaced with the same model unless there was an upgrade offered at time of purchase.

[w520] Autocad doesn't know my quadro 1000m
Hello!
Has anyone else problems with his W520 with the Quadro 1000M and Autocad (architecture 2011) ?
ACAD will not know my Quadro and the driver from the Autodesk homepage are not knowing my graphic card.
The Nvideo system control knows Autocad for using the 1000m, the nVideo icon in the task bar tells that the 1000m is used by autocad but when running autocad ist can't find any 3d hardware acceleration.
It's a liitle bit frustrating running autocad with a w520 and optimus.
thanksNot a user of AutoCAD here, but I use Autodesk Inventor on my W520 and it works with Optimus/Discrete settings just fine. I am running the http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html NVIDI Verde drivers.

Exporting COLLADA in 3ds Max from body objects (SATs)
I work with SATs that are exported from Solidworks and imported into 3ds Max Design 2013, they are great in that setting.
When I've exported them as DAEs (and I used the exporter from the COLLADA website as suggested, FBX Export Version 2013.1), I try inserting them into the 3D widget and this crashes iBooks Author. I followed the best practices, it's waaay under the max amt of faces, and I've been able to export other primitives like spheres and such that import into iBooks just fine.
I've also tried a convert to editable poly and a multires modifier to lower the polys dramatically before exporting, but still it's a no go. I also welded the vertices once to see if it didn't like holes.
Any suggestions? Is it possibly a problem with the COLLADA version?
Thankssorry if this is overkill, but can anyone make sense out of this?

Redhat/centos on macpro using quadro
Hi, i have this scenario : if i install linux(rhel/centos) via bootcamp/refit on mac pro and if this macpro using quadro card, then do i have to switch the card from mac version to non-mac version ? for example if i got quadro 4000 for MAC, then when i boot into linux , will it recognize the card or i need to change the card to non-mac version (i believe they're using the same PCIe slot, right) ?
option 1 : If i can still use the 'for mac' version in linux, will i get maximum power of it ? has anyone ever tried this ? is linux driver for quadro (in this example quadro 4000) really working perfectly when install on mac pro ?
option 2 : if i need to switch to non-mac version.... means i need to have 2 card inside the macpro, one is for running mac osx (let say radeon) then another is for running linux (quadro). Will it be any trouble with both graphic card installed together, will the uncompatible card give any problem the the OS ? will osx crash with the quadro ? vice versa , will the linux crash because of the radeon inside ?
What i'm trying to do is to have dual boot (linux rhel/centos and OSX) inside macpro. Then i want to get a quadro card (maybe quadro 4000), so both linux and mac can use it.
ThanxAs long as you have drives, it is just another graphic card. An "apple" card works fine in other OS.
You should check Nvidia and linux forums though about drivers.
And you don't need to do anything with or about "Apple Boot Camp" esp if you do like I hope, put it on its own hard drive. -
How do I use multiple GPIB cards in one computer?
I have two GPIB cards installed in my computer. One has aprimary address 0 and the other is 1. The card with adress 0 works fine but when I try to communicate with some instrument via the second card, the instructions are not carried out. However MAX ha detected the presence of instruments on both the cards, but it is only that when the second card(address 1) is used the intructions are not carried to the instrument. Please advise on how to select the card while sending an instruction? Or is it that I can use only one card at a time??
When you say that your commands aren't carried out, could you describe what commands you are sending, and what error is being returned?
When you say that you cannot communicate with the second instrument, are you using the 488.2 Communicator in MAX?
Did you make sure that all the settings for the second GPIB board in the properties page are correct? -
Why am i being charged twice for 11.04 and 11.46 when I did not purchase those songs, I used an itunes card 25$ and I still have 0.04 cents left?
I couldnt redeem w/o an apple ID so when i did it asked for a credit card. And I want to discontinue and remove my account from itunes but it wont let me, there is no account discontinue or removal of accountBecause too much time has passed I can't edit this into the prior comment, but here is the info regarding reverting to iTunes 11.0.2 (assuming you do have a time machine backup) from https://discussions.apple.com/message/22057703#22057703

Repairing permissions doesn't fix it.
I reverted to the previous version, 11.0.2.
1. Quit the new crash-prone iTunes.
2. Delete the app.
3. Restore v. 11.0.2 with Time Machine.
4. In your iTunes folder look for a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries", find the latest one.
5. In the iTunes folder itself you'll see "iTunes Library.itl", delete it (or compress it and save a copy for later just in case.
6. Copy the newest .itl file in Previous iTunes Libraries to the iTunes folder and rename it "iTunes Library.itl".
7. Launch the older version of iTunes.
My crashing has seemed to have ceased with a revert to an older version. I noticed today that the newer crashing iTunes had been launched for hours but not playing anything, when I played internet radio it crashed within 5mins, fed up I reverted to an older version.
Btw, a simpler way to do this is to revert to older iTunes app, then hold Option when it launches and choose an older library. -
Update of photoshop CC - trouble with NVIDIA Quadro 1000M display driver. PS freezes
Hey guys,
Since today I've got trouble with my PS CC.
I've updated PS CC yesterday 2014-12-12.
I was doing some drawings today and two times PS freezes during switching layers of or selecting a mask.
A message appeared that there was trouble with the display driver an PS switched off the GPU support because of that issue.
Ok, I thought let's update the display driver and so I've done today. I switched to actual NVIDIA display driver version 314.21
I'm working with an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M on a DELL mobile Workstation Precision M4600 with 8 GB RAM.
Now when I start up PS and press alt+k, my 2 displays showing a black screen for 1-2 seconds.
After closing the general setup window again black screen for 1-2 sec and the top menu bar is showing no entries.
When I move the mouse pointer over the bar, the menus appear again. But the bar is like transparent at the parts where no menues are.
When I unlock the window from the screen an put it back fitting to the screen everything looks like normal.
Till today I hadn't any problem with my notebook in that kind of way.
Maybe someone has or had similar problems.
Would be nice if someone can help me.
thanksOh, that sounds very bad. It's not that bad for me. It's not crashing that often at the moment, only black screens at start up or if setting dialog is opened. But I will see tomorrow how often it will crash, during today it crashed 2 times when doing some ridiculous simple actions like switchid to another layer and the other time when trying to edit an mask layer. I will contact the support chat on monday regarding this issue. Maybe there is a solution or an update soon... I keep may fingers crossed for you.

3ds max can't save to lion server, 3ds max can't save to lion server
I know there have been many discussions in the past few weeks.
Please if any one can help me with a sollution or work around I will appreciate it.
We have a mac mini server and both mac's and windows in the office.
All work perfect except 3ds max can't save or open files from the lion server. All other programs work perfect from the windows machines to the lion server.
Anybody found a solution yet?No I'm still going around in circles. It's infuriating, everything else is working fine, I just have this one issue with the .max files.
I phoned Apple yesteday, hoping that they may help as we have an AppleCare Protection Plan that supposedly has software support. They have not managed to help in anyway, and have suggested that I take out some kind of cross platform support at extra cost, although they may not be able to help either.
They are saying it is third party software vendors responsibility to sort out a fix, which annoys me, as we haven't changed the third party software, we've upgraded the server and now our workflow is broken. I have read of other people that have contacted Autodesk about the issue and they have said that the problem is down to Apple using their own SMB in Lion Server, but haven't mentioned any kind of fix/workaround.
I don't know whether switching the servers SMB off and running SMBup may help. It's not something I really want to do, but I'm really running out of ideas.
