3G = 2 bars, Edge = 5

So what exactly is going on here - I'm paying for 3G data speeds, but only get two bars and mostly everything times out.
I went from having 3 - 4 bars at my desk at work to having 1 - 2.
When I switch off 3G, I get full bars at my desk - when I turn it on, I get 1 - 2. I'm not out in the boonies either - just outside of Boston.
I wish I felt like I was getting my money's worth, but I don't.

"Ok, well now you have gone from saying you had 1 or 2 bars on 3G to having Zero. Big change."
Well yeah, that's typical AT&T reception at my desk. Look North, 2 bars, spin around and look South, no bars. Awesome.
"But I agree on the bit about potential mac buyers basing future purchases on the iPhone 3G problems. Most people savvy enough to use an iPhone are also smart enough to realize a computer or laptop is a totally different issue than a phone."
Yeah, let's hope so.
"Remember that the iphone is a computer, with a phone and an ipod bolted on. Its the phone portion, that is giving problems and Apple purchased that stuff, and probably has to rely on the vendors of that technology for help with these problems.
So I don't see a great deal of carry over to computers."
I do - if I hear that you're brand new VW Passat is in the shop on day one because of a faulty wiring loom, and then after minimal research find that there are many problems with the VW Passat, I'd have no interest in a Jetta or Golf or anything else in the VW range.
Same thing applies to the iPhone+MM integration (hence all the extensions of the MM contract and apologetic emails). If someone (who doesn't own a Mac) has a really bad experience with the iPhone (and network), I think it's ok to suspect they'd think the rest of the model line suspect as well.

  • 3G Off = 3 bars + Edge ..... 3G On = No Reception

    Something's weird...
I sat in a parking lot today in Malibu (okay, not the best cell reception spot on the planet) and with 3G off (to save battery), I had 3 bars plus the Edge icon.
I turned 3G on and then had nothing. No Reception. No Edge. No 3G. Nothing.
Turned 3G back off and I was back to 3 bars and Edge.
I did this a few times...same thing every time.
    What's up with that?

Every time you do a network switch it takes time for the phone to register network. Try it again and give it a good 20 seconds. I live in an an area with only EDGE and when I switch 3g on it will say 'No Service' but I give it a few seconds and it registers with the towers.
Its like when you first turn on the phone it takes a good 10-20 seconds to 'connect' with the tower. Try waiting once you know and reply back. I'm almost 95% sure thats what your issue is

  • 3G vs EDGE signal issues in San Diego 92103

I have perfect 5 bar EDGE and 3G reception at my house on the 5th floor of a 6 story condo building. In the past few days, the two networks are competing for attention with my iPhone, and the phone seems confused. First it will switch to EDGE from 3G, and then it will switch to NO SERVICE. Then after a while it goes back to EDGE, but never gets the 3G signal back. I've seen it do this twice during the day time. It also does it at night when I'm asleep, the reason I know is because when it switched to EDGE, my computer speakers buzz from the data interferance that the EDGE network causes with unshielded speakers and it wakes me up!
Is it possible that the 3G and EDGE signals are so strong they could be competing on my phone? I thought the phone wouldn't even try to switch to EDGE unless it dropped down to like 1 bar? Why would my 3G signal go from perfect to none causing the phone to switch to EDGE and then loose EDGE reception?
It seems the only fix is to reboot the phone. I called Apple today and they told me to try "reset network settings", and also try a hard reboot (hold the home button and power down for 10 seconds).
So, I've tried these, but I doubt they will work. They also suggested I may need a new SIM card, which makes zero sense to me.
Is anyone else having this problem, are there any fixes? Is this a hardware problem with the radio in the phone? Firmware problem with the way the phone handles the networks? Or is this a total AT&T problem?

Maybe, but it might take a lot longer then you think! I used to live in University Heights on Adams and Oregon St, and Verizon had the same problem. Full bars one minute, no service the next. They were never able to fix it, so I had to switch to T-Mobile. To this day I think the problem still exists over there. I almost think it's TOO MUCH signal as opposed to not enough. What blows me away is just 8 blocks away from my house there is only 1 BAR of 3G signal from AT&T! I don't understand it (except here I am on the 5th floor, and 8 blocks away I was on the ground!).
On the other hand, AT&T is sending me a replacement SIM card tomorrow, I doubt that will fix it, but who knows. I have been very impressed so far with the customer service from both Apple and AT&T reps regarding this issue.
You get American employees who speek very good English who are friendly and want to solve your problem. Let's hope that never changes!

  • Strange EDGE behavior since last Friday

    Hello,
I work on the 7th floor of a large 8 story building in N Central NJ. Before last Friday I was able to get a constant 4-5 bar Edge signal in my office. 3G never worked in the building. However now, I will get a good 4-5 bar signal for maybe 20 minutes and then the phone will suddenly change to "No Service". Edge will sometimes come back, but it usually requires me to reboot the phone. If I turn on Airplane mode and then turn it back off the phone just displays "Searching...." and the Edge never returns. Strange thing is that if I am listening to Pandora radio or try to use Safari when the phone says "No Service" it sometimes still works. How can I have "No Service" and still be able to xfer data?
Updated to 2.0.1 and it didn't improve things. Went and got a new SIM card and that didn't help either. How can I get a good signal and then all of a sudden have it drop to "No Service"? I'm not moving the phone or anything! Are others experiencing this type of problem? Do I have a bad phone?
    NM

If your phone is able to receive data with "no service" showing, there is likely something wrong. Are you able to send or receive calls with "no service"? Remember, the signal strength meter has a built in lag, otherwise it would be fluctuating rapidly, especially indoors. If you move a phone in a steel framed building, it initially won't show a change in bars, but a minute or more later, jump up or down. The placement of your hand on the phone can also have a big effect. Never compare "bars" from one phone model to another.
To get a more accurate measurement of signal, put your iPhone in "Field Test" mode. To do this enter <star>3001#12345#<star> in the keypad and press call. The "bars" will be replaced by a number - the actual signal strength in -dBm ( the lower the better). Numbers of less than -100 (i.e. -110) are getting weak.

  • Dropping to EDGE

As of yesterday there are 3 iPhones in my house. Two of them 3G and one the new 3G S.
Both of the 3G iPhones have been full bar 3G for the last 3 months. So much so that I rarely bother to activate WiFi when I'm home.
The 3G S, in the same room as the 3G models will drop to EDGE and return to 3G repetitively during any network activity like checking email. It drops so frequently (while the 3G maintains 5 rock solid bars in 3G) that any network activity takes longer than the same action on the vanilla 3G.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Me too.
Just got back with a new SIM card, same problem. I am restoring it now, but I do not think this is a phone problem, more like a firmware problem that will require a fix. Those who would notice it it is because they have 3G phones to check side by side. Mine can go from full bars on 3G to no bars in EDGE, then 3 bars 3G, no bars EDGE, etc. It doesn't happen everywhere, of course, but in areas where the 3G signal perhaps is not "perfect".
I doubt that a new phone will make a difference, but then again it may just be the phone and it looks like a firmware issue.

  • No Signal/Searching.. possible solution??

I just received my second iPhone 4 yesterday, activated, synced...
Everything was fine until this morning when I came to work. Again, it immediately went from 5 bars on Edge to Searching.
    Restarted phone, no change.
Turned on/off Airplane mode, no change.
    Growled at it, no change.
Then I thought.. hm. I wonder if the antenna in this thing is so fine tuned, that it can actually just barely find a 3G signal close by, but the signal is so weak that the phone pops in and out of no signal/searching mode.
So I turned off 3G (wireless was already turned off).
It immediately jumped from 'searching' to 5 bars, Edge.
I did notice that while driving to work this morning, I stayed on 3G a bit longer then usual (my son was watching the signal so I could concentrate on the road). So to all of you with the same issues I had with my first iPhone 4 (which had other issues as well, hence the return after only 1 week), you may just want to give this a try.
Unfortunately, living in Arkansas means I have to content myself with the fact that AT&T just doesn't care about us redneck hillbillies and will not put in more towers (one of their reps actually blamed Arkansans for it.. ya, ooookay).
But, this Searching/No Signal issue seems to be an AT&T problem, not an Apple iPhone 4 issue.
I guess I will be switching to Verizon as soon as Apple decides to let them sell the iPhone as well... And I don't even care how long I have left on my contract!

It sounds to me like the iPhones IMEI has been blocked - this has been discussed a lot on these forums. It basically means that the iPhone has been reported lost or stolen by the owner. I'd recommend calling O2 and asking them. You will need to the iPhones IMEI number which you can find by looking at:
Settings > General > About > And scrolling down to the bottom...it's a 15 digit number.
By calling them they will be able to tell you the phones back ground.
Would I be able to get it exchanged at the Apple Store? I know it's a massive longshot as I'd probably need ID and proof of purchase and that, but I thought I'd give it an ask rather than sell it for spares or repairs when it was possible to get it exchanged.
If the above is not the problem and it's still under warranty then it might be eligible for repair/replacement. You should connect it to iTunes and register it using your own personal Apple ID and information.
Failing both of these I'd put it on an internet auction site and cut my losses.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best of luck..

  • Oracle ADF Graph

    Dear Experts,
Please tell me the solution of the bar graph in oracle adf. when we create the bar graph from the master details table
then this show the error 'please enter at least one numeric data point on the<bars:>edge.
    Thanks in advance.

In order to show a bar graph, there must be some Numeric field - A field that is defined with Number Data type - to show the data, I believe you are missing a step and you don't put that into your bar graph, try going to bindings tab and double click on the graph, and specify the attribute you want to compute the bar graph with.

  • Newport Center Mall (Jersey City, NJ) - Verizon Store Nightmare

I have never met more INCOMPETENT people than at the Verizon Store in the Newport Center Mall (Jersey City, NJ).  This is the 4th time that I have had to deal with a representative who is disrespectful and ignorant.  Yesterday afternoon I decided to give this store a 4th try to see if they could persuade my horrible opinion of them, well I was disappointed…yet again. The ONLY reason I go to this store is due to lack of options in the area.  Even the simplest of tasks (such as today – I asked if they could put on a screen protector which I had bought from Verizon months prior) is a challenge.  I barely make it 5 feet in the door without having someone roll their eyes or speak down to me with a smug attitude regardless of the situation. I work in a customer-oriented, product driven industry and it takes a lot for me to get to this point but I have FINALLY had it with this store!!!!  Someone from corporate headquarters needs to put these reps through rigorous “human decency” training.  It’s disgusting and pathetic how these Newport Center representatives treat customers (in fact, I have witnessed with my business associates several conversations with other customers that were of the same demeanor).  I am better off going out to my way, paying a $13 toll and visiting any Verizon store in Staten Island because believe it or not, their Customer Service is awesome.  Or better yet, how about your COMPETITOR helped me in less than 5 minutes with NO QUESTIONS asked in the same mall.
This review was all because your store REFUSED to put on a Verizon-bought screen protector!  I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for 12 years...looks like I might be switching service providers soon because your competitor received major kudos for a job well done yesterday.
Oh, and if Verizon would like the name of the specific representative who I had the pleasure of working with yesterday please let me know!

Interesting reading and well written to boot I also live in JS, in Newport area. Before getting iPhone 3G a week ago I had at&t Blackjack 3G. My main observation between Newport and Manhattan Midtown where I work is that in respect to signal and reception (and even battery life) both iPhone and Blackjack behave similarly in same places. Flip-flop speeds between Edge and 3G are similar also. All this means mostly 3-5 3G bars including my 15th floor apartment and 25th floor Park Avenue office. Exceptions are things like 34th street Path station (1-2 Edge bars), some spots around Newport marina where both phones fall to Edge and naturally enclosed indoor places like bathrooms inside both apartment and office, elevators and such.
With both phones I also noticed that even outdoors at&t 3G coverage in the same spot seems to fluctuate with weather, time of the day and who knows what else. For example it can flip flop rapidly between 5 bars 3G and 5 bars Edge. In other thread someone knowledgeable called this cell tower "breathing" related to 3G nature and shared bandwidth usage.
I'm not sure but after updating yesterday to 2.0.1 I noticed that my iPhone now tends to stay at 5 bars Edge where it previously had 5 bars 3G. Before update the phone will momentary be at Edge when I take it off from the pocket or exit elevator and then pretty fast it'll switch back to 3G. Now under same conditions it seems to stay at Edge almost indefinitely. Rebooting switches it back to 3G. I'm afraid that now Apple decided to err on a side of caution and is trying to keep iPhone on Edge as long as possible. Before that people (not me) were complaining that iPhone will try to hold on onto 3G even when there basically were no signal.

  • IPhone 4 reception issues are not design related! Proof inside this topic!

    Hello,
I conducted some very strict tests to verify the reception bug some people are reporting.
*Test 1:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position with a plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand.
*Test 2:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position WITHOUT any plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand, making sure my left hand is perfectly dry.
*Test 3:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position WITHOUT any plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand, making sure my left hand is wet (wetting it before the test)
    *Tests duration:* 2 full minutes.
    Here are the results:
*Test 1:* Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
*Test 2:* Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
*Test 3*: Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
Geographic location: Paris (France), Bastille district, inside my apartment. Note that I don't get 3G on this location, wathever phone I use (Veryfied with HTC Magic, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, it's all the same on this aspect).
*So same exact result for all three tests!*
    *_So what does it mean?_*
It either means that not all iPhone 4 are affected by this issue (as mine is not affected), or that this issue is not simply related to how you hold your phone and does involve also other elements, like the phone baseband firmware not dealing well with some GSM network configurations (different frequencies...etc) when adding noise (which is what your hand do when holding the phone) or something else.
This could give credits to the AppleInsider theory that it's related to how the BaseBand firmware is dealing with some GSM network situations and so that it's software related and that a fix is coming soon (see: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/06/25/deathgrip_hysteria_may_end_monday_with_ios_401.html).
But it can also mean that it's still purely hardware related and that it's a production fault that affects only some units but not all.
But it's clearly not a design fault, otherwise all units would be affected and so I would be able to reproduce it with mine, which is not the case (as demonstrated by the tests I conducted).
_*My advice to those who are affected:*_
    1) Wait a week to see if a software fix get released (as apparently, according to AppleInsider, it may come this very monday as part of an iOS 4.0.1 update), or at least for a confirmation that it's not a software issue in some GSM network configurations.
    2) If it's confirmed that it's a production issues on some units, then get your phone exchanged.

    Well documented post.
After reading through all the reports I found myself intentionally holding the phone in the "Death-grip".
I went out that evening and used the phone perfectly fine all day, holding it with a few things, which is actually the way I hold it anyway when texting / msging etc.
I have a lot of faith that Apple with resolve this with a software update, and hope the fault is related to the BaseBand firmware reported in the appleinsider.
I am angered by everyone accepting the bloggers so-called "OFFICIAL RESPONSE" as Apples 'Official Response'.
There is no way, that Apple (Steve Jobs), would use that response via email, back to a single customer.
Officially... Apple will direct their response to the news directly, or at least something on their website.
People need to stop jumping on the "Steve Jobs told us to just hold it differently" band-wagon, and wait for something thats actually "OFFICIAL"...
As i've said in previous posts, just because the news and this blogger has put the word "Official" next to it, does not make it so...
    Rant over...

  • My Take on the Reception and Slow Download Speed Issue

I seriously believe that the reception problems are a result of something that AT&T has done... Here's why. I started having issues with reception variation and very slow download performance BEFORE the release of iPhone 4 or iOS4. I went to AT&T and got a new SIM. No improvement. I complained at the Apple Store about the variable reception, and the fact that when downloading, the phone got extremely hot to the touch. Because I have been a good Apple customer, the Genius replaced the phone. No improvement. I only upgraded to iOS4 after getting the refurbed "new" phone-- the new OS hasn't really done anything for me other than shorten my battery life..... I am getting pretty tired of sitting in one physical spot, and watching my signal strength go from 5-bars 3G to 1-bar EDGE to "no service" in the span of a few minutes.... Somebody had better do something about this issue, or it's back to Sprint with the new HTC Evo 4G..... Never had reception issues with them!!

It could be a bit of a design flaw but it could also be affected by iOS4.. any phone with an ariel when hold against skin makes the signal drop period! The only reason its more news worthy is because its actully part of the case.
It certainly does need fixing but a software update could help improve it for both iphone 4 and 3G/3GS. Ive heard the older models have been suffering this too.
The reception issue didnt really bother me that much I hold it naturally in my right hand and I dont get a signal issue mainly because I noticed my finger doesnt make contact with the space between the two antennas but then if I apply a finger over the space seprating the antennas the signal does indeed drop its like the two seperated antennas cancel eachother out.
But I know having to buy a case is a bit stupid when it should work without it but for a phone that cost 500-600 why the **** wouldnt you want to protect it?
Personally I love the phone the camera is awesome especially the quality of the front facing camera it looks amazing as good as the 3 mega pixel camera on the 3GS.
The best thing though is definatly the retina display, it looks beautiful. The main thing I liked about the screen tho wasnt the shapeness and quality but the fact that I found it hard to tell the difference between the black colour of the case and the blackness of the screen especially when watching a video with the black bars on the sides of the video, the contrast ratio alone is pretty epic.

  • Notable change in 3G behavior after 2.0.1

As I've mentioned in some other topics, I have an iPhone 3G that I consider to work very well. It gives me good reception in most areas around town (Pasadena/Los Angeles), but I didn't move from another 3G device so I can't compare. There have been a few posts suggesting that reception has improved since the update, but I doubt the update did anything to make reception "better." I can however confirm, for certain, that the behavior of my iPhone has changed when it comes to 3G and Edge.
In my office I've never had good reception. Not with the original iPhone, not with my Sony Ericsson before that, and not with the new iPhone 3G. In fact, as soon as I get to my office parking lot, my iPhone 3G switches to Edge. Until today, I've never seen my iPhone 3G connected to the 3G network in my office. It's been on Edge exclusively while here.
Now, as I type this, my iPhone sits on 3G (with 1 bar of course). The -db vacillates between -100 & -105. It's been on 3G all day long. So apparently the update changed how aggressively the iPhone hands off from 3G to Edge based on signal strength. Is that better? Not sure yet.

I kinda have a less optimistic observation. I also have what I consider a good iPhone 3G specimen being able to compare it with my prior 3G Blackjack.
I'm afraid that now Apple decided to err on a side of caution and is trying to keep iPhone on Edge as long as possible. Before that people (not me) were complaining that iPhone will try to hold on onto 3G even when there basically were no signal.

  • Problems with regular GSM reception?

Hi, I've had poor reception since I bought the iPhone 3G at the end of July. After updating to 2.0.2, what was poor reception has become terrible reception, but I am not just having problems on 3G networks. I know others have had the experience that when they turn off 3G, they still get good reception on EDGE, but this has not been my experience at all. Prior to getting the iPhone, I had a Motorola RAZR on AT&T that got between 3 to 4 bars of reception on a regular 850 MHz GSM band at my house (I know it was using this band because I live in a cell dead-spot and purchased a $250 dollar Wi-Ex YX500-CEL cellular repeater which operates on the 850 MHz band and cured my cell phone reception problems at my house), and I had no problems making or receiving calls. Since upgrading to the iPhone 3G, at home I get 1 bar of GPRS switching to 1 bar EDGE or 1 bar GSM or No Service. Usually it sits at 1 bar, and after I try to make a call, it usually says call failed and No Service. I've been on the phone with Apple and AT&T, done multiple resets and restores to no avail. The Apple rep blamed AT&T service and the AT&T rep blamed Apple hardware. At the time, I was thinking "if the iPhone is quad band, why isn't it using the cell band from my repeater which works great with my RAZR and also works great for my roommate's Verizon phone?" I had been thinking that for some reason, the iPhone was not switching to use the band from my repeater, and was instead trying to use a very weak EDGE signal or something. I think the answer is, the iPhone must have poor reception on other bands, not just 3G, because last night I discovered if I walk right up to my cell repeater, within 3 feet or less, my iPhone magically has a full 5 bars of service (not 3G, not EDGE and not GPRS). As soon as I walk outside the 3 feet radius from my repeater, the signal starts to dramatcially drop off so that by the time I am about 8-10 feet away, it is back to 1 bar vs No Service. So, now I am thinking the iPhone just has generally crappy reception for other bands as well, not just 3G. I don't think it's just a defect with my particular phone, because at work, I actually get full 4-5 bars of 3G reception, and my phone works great in that particular location. What do you all think?

I wonder if this may have something to do with iMessage on my Macs. Recently updated to Maverirks and the iMessage app on my Macs was set up to my email and mobile phone (it wasn't before). I wonder if this is so, then whoever I send an SMS to that has iMessage on and replies back, will be picked up by iMessage since is turned on on my Mac, since replies go to the Mac but not my phone. If the sender has iMessage off, I get the SMS fine.

  • R2.1 Resolved My Issues...

So far, three hours into my download of R2.1 and all is well from West Central FL on the coast.
    * GPS works great, dead-on again on searches and Locate Me! No more across the State
    * 3G signal strength back to 3-bar's (prior on R2.0.1 & R2.0.2 ranged from NO SVC to a hint of a bar)
    * EDGE signal from home has topped-out
    * Email search on all networks do not get hung-up on an endless search
    * Contact Names do not experience delays when selected to add to SMS or Email address line
    * Battery Charge and Sync indicator showing up on iPhone again
    * Can't really comment on dropped EDGE calls status as yet, having only worked from my home office today and making three cell call's.
    So Far APPLE, Great Job

Andrew, if I understood your question correctly, my answer is "depends"...
I work remotely for my company... therefore, while I sit in my office, I have my business laptop running, as well as my personal MacBook Pro email up. Therefore; when in my office, I leave my iPhone on "manual" FETCH.
Should I leave my office for appointments, etc. I turn on both my Business & Personal email accounts on my iPhone, and depending on the amount of email traffic I anticipate at that time, will either leave my iPhone on FETCH every 15-min, or on PUSH. Over weekends, I typically leave my iPhone on FETCH at 30-min intervals.
If you're referring to which Network I am tuned to... ie. EDGE, 3G or Wi-FI? Then again, in my home office, I leave my iPhone on EDGE and when away from the office, I also leave it on EDGE unless I see an email come in with an attachment... in that case I switch to 3G if available. In the evening hours, away from my desk, should I want to access the web, email etc. from my iPhone, I turn-on to my home Wi-Fi which is faster than 3G network. I am only 3-miles from closest 3G tower, but with that, only receive 1-3 bar's, where with Wi-Fi, I top out on signal strength.
If your asking because of my comment that on R2.0.2 my email searches would go on for several minutes without downloading a single message... I can tell you that it would occur regardless which network named above I was on.
Something I just reported today on APPLE Discussion site and APPLE Tech Support website is that I noticed that my PUSH isn't working properly. For the first time since I bought the phone July 25, I am NOT receiving my emails as my interpretation and industry experience with PUSH capabilities should work and had previously enjoyed with my iPhone prior to R2.1.

  • Iphone, Love it but outages everywhere

I wonder if I have a duff Iphone. For the last 6 months I've been frustrated at how easily my Iphone switches from 5 bars edge to zero bars to 3 bars 3G and often asks slower than dial-up. i was next to a guy with a 3 week old Iphone and he had 4 bars 3G the whole time mine was switching (mostly on Edge)...
Then I read this... I am not alone... http://news.cnet.com/8601-13772_3-10196573.html?communityId=2068&targetCommunity Id=2068&blogId=52&tag=mncol;tback
Has anyone else seen their older iphone perform worse than a newer one?

Yep to most of these. Backup, restore, updates (multiple times).
I'll go to the Apple store but I always seem to get 3G in my local store around here!
Mmm, the new SIM card, interesting. I didn't think that did anything but "ID" the connection to AT&T.
I am tempted to take my HD Video Cam to record the screen to show how it can change 5 BARS EDGE to 4 BARS 3G, without even moving. My wife is the only one on Verizon and in New York, the call quality on mine was too bubbly and on hers was perfect so I did my 90 minute conference call on hers.
You know what's REALLY annoying is that I can go to places where it's just great and reminds me of what a great fast device it is.
I have just read the YOUTUBE problems people are having. I kind of get that, but for Safari and other apps as well. they will go from lightening speed to dog slow in the same location....... At least we know the problem isn't just "us".

  • No service with iphone 4

I just got my phone, it's all set up and such, and the service with AT&T keeps dropping to 1 or 2 bars, and occasionally to no service. I'm in my apartment, where I always got perfect service with my 3G (and my wife's 3G still has perfect service). I've reset all the network settings, turned on and off airplane mode and 3G, but to no avail. Any ideas?

I was seeing the same symptom. I had a 3GS in one hand and the newly-activated 4 in the other. The 3GS showed 5 bars on the 3G network and the 4 showed 1 bar. Two minutes later they were both at 5 bars 3G. Then the 4 went to 1 bar Edge. 3GS never dropped below 3 bars and never left the 3G network.
I spent a while on the phone with AT&T and they said it is "possible" that the local network was not "ready" for iPhone 4 activations until tomorrow. However, after several reboots of the iPhone 4, a couple connects\disconnects from iTunes and some utility run by the AT&T rep to force the iPhone 4 to rescan frequencies, it seems to have calmed down a bit. They also had me power off the iPhone 4, remove and replace the SIM, then power on, just to make sure it was making a good physical connection after transport.
My email flow from Exchange is consistent now and the bars on both iPhones are staying somewhat in sync with each other
I'll leave more info if anything else happens, either to the positive or negative.
