3G Duo Dock

Will Apple be coming out with a duo dock that will fit both the 3G iPhone and the Apple BT headset. I thought it was one of the best features of the original Apple iPhone/BT headset combination. Thanks for your help.

Apple has not announced one, but many folks are hoping for one. Some have used a Dremel or utility knife to modify the original dual dock. One forum poster claims to have seen a dual dock for the iPhon3 3G in an Apple Store on release day, but this claim is not supported by anyone else, nor by questions several of us have posed to Apple Store employees.
Best bet is to submit feedback to Apple requesting this.

  • Various questions

Hi all, I was wondering if it was possible to get a slimline cd/dvd drive into a Powerbook duo dock and/or a hard drive to maximise space. Also i installed Appletalk remote access version 1.0 on my powerbook and now i get an error message when i boot normally, SAM (Norton) says i have a contagious virus and quarantines it. then when it restartes it saye has the same problem If i boot without system extensions it's fine but i can't go on the. Can you guy's help?

First I would delete anything Norton installed in your system. You do not need it, and Norton's Utilities cam cause a lot of headaches in a Mac.
The DUO Dock has a SCSI hard drive in it and a floppy drive. You could replace the floppy with an optical drive but you would have to do a lot of cutting to make it fit. The problem will be that it has to be a SCSI drive and to hook it up would require some serious re-wiring.

  • PowerBook 280c or 2300c questions

Hey, I'm new to this particular forum, but just wondering if I can get some help.
I'm really attracted to the entire line of the Duo PowerBooks, and namely the 280c and the 2300c.
I guess the main reason that I'm considering the Duo 280c is because a friend of mine used to own one, and he raves about it constantly, how the video performance is better than the 2300c, and the track ball feels much nicer than the track pad of the 2300c...
But I do understand that the numbers don't lie, and the 2300c has the 100 MHz vs the 33 MHz of the 280c.... Likewise the maximum supported OS for the 280c as far as I know is OS 8.1, whereas the 2300c will go up to 9.1...
So I guess you're next question is, what the **** am I wanting to do with it? Well, that's a very good question! I know that I can't do much of anything without having at least a minidock or duo dock. I would like to be able to use it for word processing email, maybe SOME basic web browsing (though I KNOW there are limitations with that, given the max resolution of 640x400...) and perhaps, to have a sound-track to all of this work, and have some type of way to play audio while working.
Now, the first thing that I notice about these is that the only way to have audio and internet connectivity at all is via some type of dock. After doing some digging, it looks like I would either need a mini dock (I've seen one made by E-Machines, called the E-Machines Etherdock.....? and I've seen one made by Newer Technologies that's also called the Etherdock...) However as far as the audio output jacks on these mini docks, I THINK that the 280c has only 8 bit mono audio out, and the 2300c has only 16 bit mono audio out.
BUT, the Duo Dock II has two NuBus slots, so is it possible to install a NuBus video card and NuBus sound card into one of those, and have decent graphics and sound while the unit is docked there? And if so, what type of screen resolution and sound quality can I expect? (1024 x 768 would be REALLY nice, but I could like with 800x600 if I had to... Also having stereo sound output is fairly important, as long as it can play CD-Quality audio. I know I can use iTunes with OS 9, but if I had OS 8, I'll definitely have to find an alternative...)
Another item of concern is the batteries -- is there any way to rebuild the batteries? And if so, where would you find the cells to rebuild them with? I've heard that the batteries weren't too great in these things, and I've seen replacements out there for 100 plus.......not my cup of tea.
I'm attracted to these machines because they sell for SO CHEAPLY out there these days.... and I'm really attracted to the design, and docking concept. I'm just wondering if I can do the above things with it....

OK, after much digging, I've found TONS of references. Here's what I've found out. Obviously, as far as the Duo is concerned, sound output is only possible with either the MiniDock, or the Duo Dock, or Duo Dock II.
Question 1: Is the PowerBook Duo 2300c capable of stereo sound output?
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-PPC_Portable/PowerBook_Duo2300c.pdf says this:
    "Sound:
The computer has a built-in microphone and speaker. The
    sound circuits
provide 16-bit monaural sound input and output. "
So.....probably not. BUT, here's one interesting caviat:
    " http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg16823.html "
Apparently, the chip used for sound HAS pin-outs for stereo output. Likewise, according to http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-68K_Portable/PowerBook_DuoSystem.pdf , there ARE pin-outs on the 152 pin connector for stereo sound out. See page 41.
    (Page 41)
71 SND OUT R Sound output right channel
72 SND OUT L Sound output left channel
However, in the same PDF, on page 108, the description of the MiniDock says these pin-outs:
    (page 108)
    70 +5V SOUND +5 V power for sound output
72 SND OUT L Sound output left channel
Likewise, on page 145 of the same document, the description of the DuoDock says these pin-outs:
    (page 145)
    70 +5V SOUND +5 V power for sound output
72 SND OUT L Sound output left channel
So, will the DuoDock II supply the stereo out? Looking at this document: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-68K_Portable/PowerBook_Duo_DockII.pdf , I see this:
"Macintosh I/O: external HDI-30 SCSI connector, mini-DIN 4 ADB connector for mouse
or external keyboard, two serial communication ports for modem and printer,
monaural sound input and output, on/off switch "
So clearly, no Apple-manufactured docks will support stereo sound out as they don't even link up with Pin 71 on the 152-pin connector.
The other side of this issue is -- How do you make pin 71 of the 152-pin connector spit out that right channel? Is it actually outputting the right channel to pin 71 without us knowing, and Apple just has no way to access it because of limitations on the dock accessories?
Also, anybody know of a Third Party dock that will link up to pin 71 to at least provide the hardware-connection to that right channel?
This is getting better and better

  • Dock gone, minimize doesn't work, computer won't respond to "shut down"....

First of all, I'm surely not a computer expert by any means, but one morning when I turned on my computer (iBook) trouble erupted as follows:
Once I logged on, the desktop picture was changing pictures every 2 seconds. I changed it to not switch pictures anymore.
I have my dock on hide at the bottom of the screen and when I went to retrieve it with my mouse, it would not pop up. I figured a restart was in order, but when I clicked on the apple and hit "restart", nothing happened. I clicked on "shut down", but again nothing happened. I also noticed that none of my windows would "minimize" when I hit the minimize button at the top left of the windows. I double-clicked the top of the window and the minimize tab would flash, but the window did not change.
I then noticed that none of my hot corners worked, so I opened up system preferences/dashboard & expose and noticed all my hot corner settings were blank. When I tried to reset them, it would show for a second and then disappeared, but would not take the setting.
One or two things on the fritz would be allright, but all these things tell me something must be seriously wrong?
I've read and read, but still haven't seen anything like this. Do I have to do a backup and re-install of Tiger or does anyone have any ideas that I could try before I go through all that? Any help would be appreciated!

First of all, you should be able to force it to shut down by holding the power button until the screen goes black and it is not in sleep (takes ~5 seconds).
When you boot up again, try checking your library (YOUR USER NAME>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systempreferences.plist
It's hard to interpret, but it might have gotten deleted.
Also check the finder preferences (Library>Preferences>com.apple.finder.plist.
If the library doesn't have much in it, it's possible it was deleted.
Unless you had a backup, you can't recover it.
If the library is still full, and your preferences for other applications are still the same, it's possible that you need to take your mac in for a checkup.
This probably won't help with your specific issue, but it is a good app to have to manage Finder/System. It is called OnyX, and you can get it here.
If you have an AppleCare warranty, try calling them at 1-800-275-2273
(Canadians, call 1-800-263-3394, other countries, look here)
    Hope I helped!

Hi Terence, I hope you can help me too. I have a problem with opening iPhoto. It has always worked fine but now as soon as I click on the icon in the Dock or connect my camera I get the enclosed screen (see below). I have tried to re-install from iLife 11 Install Disk with no joy. I have moved my plist file to Trash. Any further suggestions please will be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,

  • Pages 5.5: app doesn't appear in dock or tab bar when open

We are seeing this issue on the two macs in our office we tested (mine and a coworkers). To reproduce it:
    Open pages
Click "Done" on the open/new document window (or simply close all documents you have open)
Click the desktop to send Pages to the background
If you Cmd+Tab, Pages doesn't appear for us. It also doesn't appear in the dock. Activity Monitor shows the app is still running and using spotlight to "open" it again brings it back to the foreground.
Is anyone else having this same problem?
    Pages 5.5 2109

Newly downloaded apps will appear in the column on the left. The images on the right show what is installed on the device. Perphaps the logic has changed slightly with older builds also including what would be synced as well. Untick the box that says Automatically sync new apps and you can choose whether or not to include a new app instead of syncing, then removing.

I have the same problem & have just reinstalled the snow leopard OS but safari  still just bounces a couple of times in my original user account and then quits. It does work in a new user  account I set up though. What is the explanation for that ?
Below is the report generated after re-installing the OS and  restarting the Mac for the first time. The report obviously explains what happened but it is double Dutch to me as I don't understand code at all.
I would be fascinated to know how this problem has been caused. Is it my fault, or it it a software fault.
Previously a console report told a completely different story. Here  is that first story from console:-

  • After upgrading to 10.6.8 dock icons can't be changed

I'm running a Macbook Pro with 2.5Ghz Intel Core Duo with 4Gb memory. I recently upgraded from 10.5.x to 10.6.8, updating other software at the same time. Now I find that it won't retain any new icons I add to my dock. For awhile it kept bringing back deleted ?'s in place of software I removed. That has stopped, but neither dragging the icon into the dock or starting the app and clicking "options>keep in dock" will work. After a restart they will be gone again, along with icons I have removed while still keeping the software. Is there a fix for this?

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run:
    defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool false;killall Dock

my macbook pro started acting strange after a safari reset.
the mouse no longer: animates the dock, activates hot corners or selects pages from safari 'top sites' (without a hassle). attempts to reset dock and hot corners from preferences has been fruitless
the mouse also gets 'stuck' in logic precipitating force quits.
i run osX 10.6.8 on a 2007 macbook pro that has had 2 motherboards replaced autumn 2010.
my troubleshooting has been: restart, pRam and safe boot, also checking a 'test' account to find the same issues extant.
pRam restart caused airport to quit and say there is no airport card, and wouldn't respond untill another reboot.
macbook pro 15" 2.4 GHz intel core duo.2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
i have treated this book with care, yet run logic pro studio to the limit of this book's abilities.
    what shoud i do?

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).
    Good luck,

  • No Menu Bar / Corrupt Dock / Magnifique Related

    Hello all,
(Firstly I'll apologise for any incorrect terms etc I only picked this laptop up a week ago and it's my first experience with anything Apple)
    I have a MBP 15'' Core Duo 1.83Ghz 2GB Ram running Snow Leopard 10.6.1
About an hour ago I installed an app called Magnifique. Here is a link to their website and someone else having a similar problem:
    http://www.magnifiqueapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=165&sid=32b84750037afbe5a 2a1fa3e5465cad6
I downloaded a theme, played around with it for a bit, changed a few things, nothing major. At one point it said some of the changes would take effect upon restarting... so I did.
    Now that I have restarted:
    The Menu Bar has disappeared
    Finder won't open
None of the apps on the Dock will open
If I "right click" the Dock it disappears and then reappears
^This causes my background image to cycle through to the next background image
I can't empty/access my trash, again the Dock disappears and then reappears
Restarting in safe mode doesn't change any of this
Any advice? Tips? Things to try before a full reinstallation?
(Full installation: How would I go about that? I only have a Disc for 10.4)

This is very sad. Theme'ing on the Mac is a huge perk to owning a mac.
I was very active at ResExcellence forum before that shut down.
ShapeShifter is no longer compatible with the latest Mac OS ..
And i have Magnifique installed on one of my HD's on my G5 that i'm about to update to Snow Leopard .. ACK ! ..
    RE: the problems
Magnifique has an option to make the menu bar "hide" like the dock does.
This is somehow malfunctioning under Snow Leopard.
It would have to be that or the "opacity" options.
Some items ( clock calander bluetooth icon ) in the menu bar can also be fixed under 10.5 with an installation of the free software "iStat" which has bluetooth, clock and calander menubar options .
( not sure about snow leopard .. i dont' have it to test )
anyways .. i'm very sad about the state of "Theme'ing" on a mac ..
I VERY MUCH hope that Apple will either buy Shapeshifter and include it with every mac ..
    Or
Provide more support for Theme application developers ..
    SAVE THEME'ing on the Mac .. PLEASE !! ..

  • After clicking of applications folder in the dock, the items have no labels.

    Only happens after a reboot.

  • Boot Camp, Expose, Trackpad & Dock issues after waking from sleep 10.6.1

    Hello,
    Here's my setup:
    13" MBP (Late 2009)
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
500 GB HD (Seagate Momentus Non G-Force version)
    OSX 10.6.1: 367 GB
Boot Camp MS Windows 7 RTM: 123 GB
All of this started yesterday. After pressing the power button to boot, the MBP would give me the Mac boot sound, and would not recognize that the "Option" key was depressed. This would cause the system to boot into Windows 7 due to the Boot Camp default setting. After trying to get the system to boot into OSX 5 times, I ended up changing the default boot OS to OSX. The MBP now boots into OSX, but still does not recognize the option key on bootup so it will boot into the Boot Camp default selection only.
The following Problems are plaguing my MBP after waking up from a sleep state when running OSX 10.6.1:
The trackpad is performing right clicks no matter how many fingers are used to click the trackpad.
The dock changes from the Un-Magnified setup to a Magnified setup.
Expose takes on average 1 to 2 seconds to switch from the tiled view back to a selected application. The animation is slow, and the windows are not properly displayed after selecting an application.
Except for the Option key not being recognized during boot, these problems go away if I restart, but come right back when the system enters the sleep mode. Help!!!
    Andy

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Should I upgrade Intel Core Duo 1 Mac Mini (2006) to Snow Leopard?

Okay I have a 80 GB Apple Mac Mini with Intel Core Duo 1 proccessor that shipped with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7) currently running 10.4.11 that I want to upgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard in a few months just in time for Christmas which I acquired in September 2006. It was the first Mac Mini model to include Apple's Front Row software and shipped with an Apple Remote (I know Macs don't ship with Apple Remotes anymore you have to buy them separately) and am now pondering an update. I've heard some things about Snow Leopard not working so well with older Macs even Intel based Macs that are only 32 bit.
Thing is I just got a new MacBook Pro that shipped with Snow Leopard and it seems to run fine on the MacBook Pro except for the fact a few applications I wanted to install wouldn't work with Snow Leopard like Google Desktop for Mac so was wondering if I should update the Mac Mini also to Snow Leopard. I do not particularly like how Apple removed the transcoding features to export video from one format to another in QuickTime X that was available to QuickTime 7 Pro users (actually reinstalled QuickTime 7 Pro on my new MacBook Pro so I can still use that despite QuickTime X being installed) but like Expose integrated with the Dock Menu that's new in Snow Leopard and features like Cover Flow built into the Finder (available also in Leopard along with Spaces) so if I update the Mac Mini should I update to Snow Leopard or Leopard?
This is a 2nd generation Mac Mini (the 1st generation had PowerPC chips) with Mac OS X Tiger and I've heard some negative news about upgrading Mac Mini to Snow Leopard so I want to get some more feedback on whether or not its worth it. The Mac Mini came with iLife and iWork 06 versions but updated iWork to iWork 08 Family Pack. Still have iLife 06 though and am still running iTunes 8.2.1 on the Mac Mini.
I use this computer as my main system for syncing with iPods (I have a 5th gen video iPod and a 2nd gen iPod Touch that I sync with the iTunes Library on my Mac Mini which includes videos purchased earlier from iTunes Store and music purchases as well as TV purchases) so don't want to risk messing up the system with a Snow Leopard update if it is going to cause problems doing so. If Snow Leopard is not good for the Mac Mini will just update to Leopard and stick with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard on this system.

I upgraded my mac mini 1.5GHz core solo to a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz in order to run most of SL's 64 bit stuff. I bought a pulled Core 2 Duo from ebay for $29 and it took about 1.5 hours to do the switch.
The main downside with the 2nd gen Mac Mini is the kernel cannot run in 64 bit mode due to a 32 bit controller that cannot be upgraded. Yet, booting into 32 bit kernel is SL's default setting and as you may have read in articles when SL came out, relying on a 32 bit kernel does not slow down use of 64 bit apps. I maxed RAM to this mac mini's 2 Gig limit years ago which is a good thing for you to do too.
I am happy to report the upgraded Mac Mini runs much faster than originally thanks to the 2 gig of RAM and the Core 2 Duo chip. Installing SL made it run faster still and consumption of memory for apps is lower (smaller pipeline requirements with faster CPU), and about 14 GIG of HDD space was recovered since I did not reinstall Xcode tools. I can now encode 1.5 hour long video files that used to take overnight processing time. CPU runs hotter, up to 89ºC, but usually run only about 10º higher on average than before while fan rev's not noticeably more than before between 1500 to 1800.
If you are not comfortable to upgrade the CPU, I think you will still find some benefit to SL for $25. Alternatively you could sell your Mac Mini on ebay (these 2nd gen model are popular for those want to do the upgrade) and use the proceeds to buy a refurbished current gen Mac Mini.

  • Hey Guys I Wanted To Know How Do I Change The Download/Install Location Of Apps I download From The Mac App Store Bac To The Dock Like In Snow Leopard?

So Every Time I Download From The Mac App Store (In Lion) It Always Pops Up And Downloads/Installs In The iOS Feature Thing, So How Do I Change That So It Doenloads/Installs Straight 2 The Dock Like In Snow Leopard?? lol
    Specs...
    Macbook Pro (Early 2008)
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM (MAXED)

Actually it does because the Dock is Snow Leopard's program launcher. For Lion, LaunchPad is the program launcher, not the Dock. Don't like that? Here's where you complain. Otherwise, you asked and I answered.
