3G iPod - no more "OK to disconnect" screens, a Firewire problem

I have an old 3G iPod - 15GB with the 4 touch buttons - that still works fine. This is a model that can sync via USB or Firewire, but can only get power from Firewire.
For the first couple of years it synced with a Win2000 machine just fine via Firewire. When syncing was done, the iPod would sit and display a "OK to Disconnect" message. If I elected to sync again, it would just wakeup and sync.
I have moved to a new iMac C2D and I am very happy with the machine in general. However, the iPod is not quite the same.
I decided to restore the iPod and thus use Macintosh formatting - no problem, it works fine. However, now when I sync I never see the "OK to Disconnect" message - instead, once the sync is complete the iPod just unmounts and charges as if it were being powered by the AC adaptor.
That is fine but for one thing - if I wait a couple of minutes, the iPod goes to sleep while charging (like when using the AC adaptor) and the whole Firewire bus seems to take a snooze with it! Once that happens, reconnecting the iPod does nothing and I cannot mount any of my external Firewire hard drives. The only solution is to restart the iMac, and everything is OK again.
My workaround has been to set the iPod to "Enable Disk usage", which forces it to remain mounted and awake. However, it is not supposed to work this way. Any clues??
P.S. - I just tried plugging the iPod into a G4 iBook, and while the Firewire bus does not fail the "OK to Disconnect" screen still does not appear. Hmmm..

Your iPod is probably in hard disk mode. In iTunes, while your Ipod is connected, right click on the iPod and go to options. Make sure that the box next to 'enable disk use' is UNCHECKED. That should fix the problem. Let me know if this works for you.

  • 5th Gen iPod freezes on "Do Not Disconnect" screen when connected to Mac

My iPod freezes on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen (partially backlit) when I plug it into my computer. I have a G4 eMac with standard USB connections. The ipod firmware is up to date.
This freeze doesn't occur ALL the time....just occasionally. The iPod does not appear on my desktop or in iTunes when this happens. I have to wait until the iPod discharges its battery completely before I can use it again (this sometimes takes a couple of days!).
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks....

    G4 eMac 700mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   768 MB RAM

Thanks for the replies.........I can't seem to find a solution to this....its annoying to say the least. Its just happened again this morning, though it's successfully sync'd on the last few occasions....it seems to be quite random.
One thing I've noticed is that it synced OK when iTunes wasn't open when I plugged it in. It appeared on the desktop, then I opened iTunes. This morning though it froze when iTunes was already open, so there may be an issue with iTunes (I updated this weekend to see if it was any different with the new version). I guess this will happen if you've got the ipod set to open iTunes automatically when connected too.
So, no solutions as yet.......I'm gonna get onto Apple to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all on this one.
PS: why no firewire capabilities on the new ipods?

  • IPod stuck on Do not disconnect screen.

My iPod is stuck on the Do not disconnect screen. It won't connect to the computer, shut off or reset. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you have your iPod set to transfer your music manually, then that “do not disconnect” message will continue to be displayed on your iPod until you manually eject it.
You can do this by clicking on the little eject icon next to the iPod listing in the source window of iTunes, or right click on it and select “eject”. There is also an iPod 'eject' icon in the lower right hand corner of iTunes. Another way would be to use the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray next to the clock (looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow above it). Click on this then select your iPod. Or through Windows, select start/my computer, right click on the iPod, select eject. With a Mac, drag the iPod into the trash.
If you have your iPod set to automatically sync with iTunes version 7 or later, connect the iPod and when you see the summary screen, uncheck the box marked "enable disk use".
If you are using an earlier version of iTunes, right click on the iPod in the source list, select options and uncheck the same box.
In future your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished transferring music.

  • Ipod is frozen on do not disconnect screen....

i seriously don't know what to do with m ipod anymore. it's a 5 gen ipod video that i've had for less than a year. today i tried to sync it to my computer which is a sony vaio with windows xp and it got stuck on the do not disconnect screen. i plugged the ipod in and waited for itunes to open, which it didn't(i waited a long long time). so i then shut down my pc thinking the do not disconnect screen would go away after the pc was shut down...but it didn't. i tried rebooting my ipod MANY times and that didn't work. I tried plugging it in different usb ports on my pc and it doesn't show up in itunes. it shows up in my computer as a 'removeable disk' not an ipod as well. i don't know what to do...all i wanna do is format it back to factory settings so i can use it on my new pc(a brand new imac..<3) does anyone have any ideas? thanks.<br>

Even when its not connected..I went through the same thing my Ipod freezes alot(5thgen) nor will it show vidoe or pics not even podcast. What I did was got a programm call TUNE TRANSFER FOR ipod. With this you can backup anything on your ipod so you can then restore it. During a freeze your computer doesnt recognize the ipod at all.No connection. You need to reset your Ipod but not traditionall. 1- toggle hold switch 10 times each direction.(left/right)immediatly after your last toggle(be sure the toggle isnt on hold)
2-hold menu and select buttons for 15 seconds toggle periodically. I hopes that helped if not messege me back. make sure you have the latest Itunes.
    GOOD LUCK

  • IPod Nano (6th gen.): White Screen saying "OK to disconnect." when not connected.

My 6th Generation iPod Nano (Dopi is his name) took an unfortunate ride through my washing machine a few weeks back (one of the draw backs of it being so small and lightweight... it can sometimes elude the quick pre-laundry pocket check). At first, it was okay. I immediately threw it into a ziploc bag full of rice to pull all the moisture out of it. The screen was a little blotchy for a while, but it eventually seemed to work out all the kinks and was back to full operation within 12 hours. I was using it fairly regularly after that for the next couple days with no issues.
A few days later, my iPod was getting low on fuel and had a "Connect to Power" screen on it. So I plugged it into my iMac, and everything was working fine, I started to manage some playlists in iTunes while it charged, and that's when I noticed the screen was odd.  Instead of the usual "Do Not Disconnect" screen that I'm used to, the screen had an all-white background, with a black "Do Not Disconnect." message on it.  I thought it was odd. But I ejected it, and it said "Ok to disconnect." with a black checkmark. Same white background, black text. (also a black battery life icon in the top right corner)  I disconnected, and it just told me to connect to power, again.
Finding that weird, I let the iPod's power completely drain, figuring that would fix the issue. It did not.  As soon as I plugged it back in, the white screen came back.  I let it power up to full, and after I eject and disconnect it, the "OK to disconnect" screen comes back, even after I've disconnected, and it stays there.  I can't operate anything on it.
I've tried everything I know how to do:  I've let the power drain, and recharged to full. I've tried resetting it. I tried restoring it to factory settings. And I tried to reset it and put it into disk mode, but the black and white "OK to disconnect." screen comes back before I can even get it into disk mode.
Before I restored to factory settings, I could still manage all the files on my iPod. I could add songs, remove them, make playlists and everything when I had it connected to iTunes, I just can't do anything with the iPod itself. So, my little Dopi is in a coma right now. He's still alive, he just won't wake up.  I don't want to pull the plug on him.
Any suggestions?  Anyone else have this problem?
It's not easy for me to get to an Apple Store, so I thought I'd try this before I take it to any geniuses.

  • Do not disconnect screen is frozen on my ipod

I have a video IPod 30G. I got a new computer and I downloaded the new itunes 7.0. It recognized my ipod but it would not let me add my current 1800 songs to the library. I ejected my ipod on itunes several times and nothing happened. I went ahead and disconnected my ipod from the usb connector like I've done before and now it froze and the wording "do not disconnect" is frozen on the bottom of my screen. I tried to reset it, but it's still frozen. I tried to connect it back again and now it's not recognizing my ipod in itunes or my computer. When I do connect it, it does not regcognize my device? I ran a diagnostic through itunes and it shows that there is a connection problem w/ my ipod. What can I do? I've tried to turn it off and on and nothing is working. Please help!!

I drained the battery, and the "do not disconnect" screen finally came off.... I must have reset my ipod, I lost all my 1800+ songs,. But I have a new problem, when I connect it to the usb port, itunes opens up but has an error message saying to go to the summary preference and select restore to factory setting??? I don't show that anywhere in my IPOD, where is the "summary" icon? My computer can recognize it as a drive but itunes can't...what do I do now..?

  • Dock Ipod without getting "Do Not Disconnect? screen?

30 Gb U2 edition. Universal dock connected to PC, Line out connected to external apeakers.
I want to be able to dock the unit and then control the play, selection etc from the Ipod. Unfortunatley when I dock it, I get the "Do not disconnect screen" I have Itunes and Itunes helper are set to not auto start/ run in the background on PC boot up.
I know I can stop this from happening. I have done it several times by accident ,but it seems it is never the same way. So........ How can I dock the Ipod to charge and use the line out, without getting the DO NOT DISCONNECT screen?

It can be done. I have done it by accident 4 times, but I have not been able to intentionally reproduce it.
Why not control it through the PC? I do not want itunes on this PC. I can't use it when I am getting onto everyone else about having such programs on work systems.

  • My ipod classic froze in the 'do not disconnect' screen.

I connected my ipod to my computer, and it showed the do not disconnect screen as it always does, but it froze on that screen.
Itunes is not recognising my ipod, and the ipod is doing nothing, even showing the little lock sign if I lock it.
    What do I do?

Try holding down menu and the center button for a few seconds, until the apple symbol appears. This has always worked for me

  • Ipod disconnect screen

Im not sure if this is the right area, nor if this has been asked(and I have searched everywhere), but when I plug my ipod into the usb port on my wireless router in order to share the music with my other devices I get a disconnect screen on the Ipod. Is there a way to remove this or can I not do anything about it. If this has already been asked I apologise

You cannot use the iPod to share music. It does not allow this. You can only play music from an iPod with iTunes on a computer on which you have used the iPod before.
The only thing you can do is to configure the iPod to make it accessible as hard disk. Then you can plug in the iPod and access the files on the iPod. But you cannot access the music which you play on the iPod nor does the iPod plays the music files which you would copy onto the hard disk part.

  • Ipod frozen on Do Not Disconnect and Lock symbol is on screen

I didn't realize that my IPOD was in the "hold/lock" position when I plugged into my computer. I got a message when Itunes opened that said I had to reset my ipod, but i can't do anything. Its frozen on the Do Not Disconnect screen and the "lock" symbol is in the upper lefthand corner. I have tried to reset with the Menu & scroll button but NOTHING. It's just frozen.
    Help.
Fith Generation IPOD 60GB   Windows XP

Your issue sounds almost exactly like what happened to my iPod. Have you disconnected your iPod from the computer and the image still remains frozen? Or is it still connected? If it is still connected, reset your iPod from iTunes. When it's plugged in, iPod should appear under devices and there should be an option to "Restore iPod".

  • IPod stuck in "Do not disconnect" after Restore

My iPod was stuck and iTunes told me to restore it. I left it alone in restoration mode for 24 hours since it said "Do not disconnect." Now, I have tried disconnecting USB and reconnecting and restarting computer. When I disconnect it, the iPod says "Connect to your computer; use iTunes to restore." I can't believe it could take this long to restore. Is there anything else I can do?

Give this a shot and see what happens:

Be sure to click on any embedded links that could possibly pertain to your situation, or even to just get more info on your iPod. There is a link for tutorials in there that EVERYONE could probably benefit from. Another link you could probably benefit from is "disconnect screens" towards the bottom. Look that over carefully as well.

  • Hung up do not disconnect screen

My ipod is not removing the do not disconnect screen when I hook it up to my pc to sync and is not updating. has anyone had this problem? please help.

It is nearly impossible to help unless you provide more information... Does your iPod work fine except for the sync connect to the PC? Has the sync ever worked? Does your iPod appear in the iTunes source list? Did you make any changes to the iPod options in iTunes?
If set the stage by telling the whole story, then we can try to help you.
