3G iPod port problem?  Computer/iTunes not recognizing iPod.

Okay, I've posted a few times in regards to the problems I've been having with my iPod, but here's a brief run down.
I have a 20GB 3G iPod that's 3 years old now. The iPod plays perfectly and has no problems, accept I can't get my computer or iTunes to recognize the device when I plug it in. It will sometimes momentarily connect, but never long enough to do anything with it.
I took the iPod to an Apple store and the person assisting me wasn't able to access the device through his laptop either. He tried putting it in disk mode and tried plugging it in with both firewire and USB with no success. He said that it looks like the iPod's digital access port is broken. He said that if it was under warranty he would have just given me a new one, but as it isn't there wasn't anything else that he can do.
Now for my question. What can I do next?
1. They will give me a 10% price reduction on a new iPod when I exchange my current one.
2. Is there anywhere that can repair something like this and would it be worth it to do so? Costwise...
3. Could he be wrong?
Thanks and sorry for the long post.
CK

Hey CK,
I'm having the same problem with my 3G ipod but I've had some limited success when I plugged it into a different computer running a different version of iTunes (6 vs. 7). Dunno if that would help you since I'm not sure what the digital access port is... I know there are some DIY ipod repair kits out there..

  • Computer, Itunes,  Not recognizing my ipod

About 2 weeks ago i tried to update my music on my ipod touch. I plugged it in and it didnt show up in itunes, My computer or Media Monkey. My computer charges it just fine, But i cant find it anywhere on my computer. Ive tried everything i can but with out itunes recognizing it i cant restore. The reset with the home and menu buttons (just orginized my apps which was nice lol) Tried searching device manager, no luck doesnt even show up any where in there.
Ive been scouring forums all day the only thing i found was this issue with the classic and vista or xp.
I'm running itunes 9 cause 10 caused a crash with my boyfriends ipod Which works fine he has the 8gb 3rd gen w/ 4.1
Ive Tried His Ipod Cord My Ipod cord and every usb port on laptop. Both cords charge mine. and both cords connect his. His ipod shows up just fine
    So what do i do?
Mine is 3.1.3 and the serial is 1C8015Y414P

This is what the guide says
Restore iPod touch from a backup:
1 Connect iPod touch to the computer you normally sync with.
2 In iTunes, Control-click iPod touch in the sidebar and choose “Restore from Backup” from the menu that appears.
3 Choose the backup that you want to restore from the pop-up menu, then click Restore.
I cant do this because my IPod DOES NOT show in iTunes.
The only thing my IPOD does is charge when i connect it.
    Any other ideas?????

  • New computer itunes not recognizing my iphone

    Greetings,
I just bought a new Intel core i5 imac, and set up the new itunes to connect to my library which was located on an external drive. The transfer went smoothly and everything works fine except that the new itunes does not register the existence of my iphone when I connect it to the computer. For the moment I am unable to sync the phone. I looked in iTunes>Preferences>Devices and my phone is listed (5 times) in the Device Backup list. Any ideas how I can get iTunes to recognize my iphone?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Solved it thru more google search. Just re-downloaded the latest version of itunes (no need to uninstall first). That did the trick.

Went through the troubleshooting guide with no positive results. Old (unreconized) touch is fully charged. Restarted computer. Restarted itunes. Changes usb ports. Nothing working. Any ideas?

    Hi Jim,
Thank you for your reply to my posting about iTunes not recognizing my iPod Touch after upgrading to Leopard.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Thanks for setting me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to your posting, I had already read the article you referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to your posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent you referenced was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.

  • Itunes not recognizing my ipod after restoring it

My ipod decided to go crazy on me, so I followed the 5 r's. After restoring the ipod it is no longer being recognized. I have restarted my computer, downloaded the latest software, used different usb ports but to no avail.
There is no icon in devices that pops up. When i run a diagnostic is states that an ipod is connected.
    Any helps?

  • ITunes Not Recognizing/Reading iPod

    Hello!
I've recently had trouble with iTunes not recognizing/reading my iPod. I've plugged it in, but iTunes fails to recognize that it's been plugged in. It does charge, but that's it. I've been trying to sync my iPod, but I'm now unable to. This problem only began a few weeks ago, rather suddenly, and has not yet worked since then. I'm hoping I don't have reinstall iTunes, as I've purchased some new songs and those are what I'm trying to copy over, and I don't wish to lose those.
I'm currently running Windows Vista, and I'm not sure which versions of iTunes I'm using. I know I was using 7 at some point, but I don't remember if I've updated beyond that. I'm also using a 2nd Generation iPod Nano.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening and/or what I can do to fix it will be eagerly waited for!
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem. Here are various ‘generic’ solutions that you can try in an effort to correct your problem. One should work. These are listed in simplest to more involved order (usually). Read through them all, and see if one specifically matches your observed issue(s).
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. However, it may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
Your iPod may be conflicting with other USB peripherals or network drives. If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
-- Open iTunes &/or Connect the iPod
If you do find that your Device Manager is blank, you should probably check up on this issue first: No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Your PC may have difficulty with the USB2 protocol and the iPod. See this Article for a possible solution: iPod not Recognized Correctly
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.
Try using another PC if you have access to one. Even a Mac may help. Try Restoring it on the other computer and moving it back to yours.

  • HT1567 My computer is not recognizing my iPod NanoPod - therefore the 'Devices' is not showing up on the Left side in order to sync Playlists to my Nano Pod?  What can I do about this please?

    Hi
My computer is not recognizing my iPod NanoPod - and as a result 'The Devices' section is not showing up in order to sync new Playlists to my Nano-Pod.  Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue?  Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?
    How to reset iPod
Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?
Have you carefully worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • My computer is not recognizing my IPod...how can I help this?  I have an IPod Classic from 2006, I think.

I have connected my IPod via the USB port, and even my computer is not recognizing the IPod.  How can I help this?  I have just downloaded an audiobook and now I'd like to downloading it to my IPod.

Uninstall iTunes and all of its components by following this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925, then reinstall iTunes.  This will not trouch your iTunes library or data.

  • My computer is not recognizing my IPod Touch, therefore I can not sync.

My computer is not recognizing my Ipod touch. I have used all the help tips and tried different usb ports with no change. The only other thing I can think of is that since I lost my cable for the Ipod, I am using the cable for my Iphone. Would this cause the problem? The cables seem to be the exact same, but perhaps I am mistaken.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.

My computer is not recognizing my new 4th generation IPOD Shuffle

  • My computer is not recognizing my ipod shuffle.  The computer says to use the ipod reset utility.  When I tried doing this it told me that it was for a 32 bit version which I obviously do not have.  My computer is only a few months old.  What do I do now?

My computer is not recognizing my ipod shuffle.  The computer says to use the ipod reset utility.  When I did that it came up with another message that it was only good for a 32 bit version.  I guess I do not have a 32 bit version.  I just purchased my computer a few months ago and it uses the windows 7 operating system.  What do I do now?

    Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered  owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work.  Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple  Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them.  The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.
