3g, no 3g

Question

I'm considering pruchasing a 3g ipad.
Knowing nothing much about the difference I'm wondering what the happen when 3g is not available as it appears at&t coverage is quite limited.
Guessing things still work, but sssslllloooowwwweeeerrrr.
Just wonder if if worth it with the limited coverage.

It appears AT&T's 3G network is quite limited based on what? Verizon's bogus commercials along with Verizon's 3G network on par with AT&T's EDGE network in terms of speed?

If you are in an area where AT&T's 3G network is not available, you will be connected via AT&T's EDGE network. The question isn't how much slower the connection will be. The question is if you will NEED internet access regardless the speed when there isn't an available wi-fi network you have access to.
Not to mention having unlimited free access to over 20,000 AT&T's wi-fi hotspots - at Starbucks and at McDonalds to name two large franchises where this is available, and at a number of airports.
