3G on Droid X - Useless

Hello,
Can someone tell me whether it is the phone (Droid X) or the 3G service is bad?
1. 80% of the time i get only 1X connection speed and virtually no bar in my phone. I get so many call drops and browsing is real slow.
2. GPS and maps stalls every other time trying to find the satellite even on clear day.

pardon me stealing a thread but I have the same issue
I did try uninstalling apps, resetting the phone, clearing the cache, upgrade roaming... basically, everything I can think of. there is no real pattern for me (or my wife). I live in S/E PA, in a metro city. Strong signal at times and then nothing - to 1x. I read in here about the throttle back theory but ever if that were true, our shared is just over a gig per month - mainly because we go to wireless whenever we can due to the low signal.
last time I did a hard reset - and wiped my sd, my logins were all still there so I'm not sure if it really reset everything??
It seems to have gotten much worse after the latest upgrade.

  • Question on the new Droid update...can I decline it?

My daughter and I both have Droids and she got the update yesterday.  But it changed the look of the messaging screen.  It's no longer white lettering on a black background, it's now light blue letters on a white background and is very hard on the eyes.  Is there anyway to change that?  She also said the tab menu changed and it's driving her crazy.  She'd like to delete the "upgrade" since it seems to be of little use to her.  Meanwhile, my phone keeps giving me the message that an update is waiting and I keep putting it off. BTW, adjusting the brightness is of no help at all.
I really don't know what to do.  I don't deal with glare very well at all and the thought of wearing my sunglasses indoors to read texts is making me nauseous.  Is there any way OUT of the upgrade???

The page that changed was the list of "message senders"...it used to be black with white lettering.  Now it's gone to white with blue lettering and it's hard to read.  But in reading other Droid forums, I found an app I can use instead of the standard messaging app that changes the background and even lets me choose custom text.  My daughter's happy now and I finally downloaded the update.
However I'm NOT happy with the extra garbage that was included with the download.  Latitude is a useless invasion of my privacy.  I was stunned to receive an email that let me know my location was being disclosed online.  I think that's outrageous, but I know there is a younger crowd out there who will disagree with me.  Unfortunately, I can't uninstall it, but I did disable it.  It will stay that way permanently.

  • Droid Razr M Red Eye Boot Loop--continues for TOO many customers, need help!

Droid Razr M problem with red eye boot loop--with ALL of the many posts that can be found online concerning this problem, why is there not a FIX from Motorola and/or Verizon?  All I seem to get are suggestions (I've tried) and "device is now considered out-of -date, you need a new phone".  Why should I purchase a new phone when I will have another issue in 2 yrs to cause me to purchase again?  Amazing how I am back to the 3G Droid Razr X to make due--It is about 5 yrs out-of-date.  Support with phones that are out-of-contract is ...well, pretty much non-existent.  Motorola gives the same "run around" after a 1 hr. call.  Verizon chat tech were helpful/nice but I was sent to motorola when answers could not be found...useless call transfer/number.  Any help for this Verizon faithful customer other than spend more $ for another phone?

Factory data reset is all that you can try really.  If that does not repair the issue, then the software or hardware might really be at fault, and a repair would be necessary.

  • Attaching a stylus to the Droid X...

Well, I've tried looking at pictures but can't seem to get the angle I'm looking for, and since my phone won't be here until next week, I was wondering if anybody could tell me if it's possible to attach a stylus to the Droid X...? Some phones have two holes or a loop somewhere for accessories. I thought I saw two holes on the bottom left side of the phone next to the HDMI port.

    Hi,
Just wondering why people still insist on stylus?  Especially on a phone w/ as much screen space and pinch to zoom multi-touch?  A stylus would render "multi-touch" useless.  Plus, Droid X uses capacitive touch screen which doesnt play nice with your old stylus you've probably got laying around.
They do make special stylus for this type of screen and a simple search will turn one up for you.
but to answer your question, there's no place for a stylus on the body of the X because the designers had no intention of stylus control.  you can probably buy a holster and slip it in there.
Oh, but there is a place to slip a wrist strap, like you find on a digital camera.  Maybe you can jimmy something there.
    Tim.

  • Droid 3 software patch?

Holy cow! I thought maybe I was having a problem adjusting to the Droid 3 keys but this thing is obviously full of bugs. The slide out keyboard has a mind of it's own. I end up with all sorts of symbols, unintended periods and jibberish. After searching online I found this was software issue also involved with the regularly failing backup assistant, camera issues and battery life,
Soooooooo.....why aren't there any mentions of this issue here? Why isn't there a Droid 3 forum and most importantly...
WHEN CAN I DOWNLOAD A PATCH? My slide out keyboard is useless for emails, texts, etc.

    Hi heavypetting,
I understand your discontent; I would be frustrated if my phone's keyboard did not work as expected. Upon some research it appears that the issues outlined in your post may be caused by third party applications conflicts. Please run your phone in Safe Mode and see if issues re-occur. Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
If your phone works properly in Safe Mode, you will have to remove the conflicting application. Lamentably there is no way to identify the conflicting application so you may have to remove several (or all 3rd party applications) and re-install one by one in order to identify the conflicting application.
If issues continue while running in Safe Mode, the next troubleshooting step is to do a Factory Reset.
While a Software Update is expected to be released soon for the Droid 3, the information about this update does not mention any resolution for physical keyboard issues.

  • Fair To Presume That An Update Wouldn't Render A Phone Useless

This is now turning into an all-day mistake. I use my phone for business purposes and Apple should have/could have anticipated something like this. At least warning if not completely preventing existing iPhone users from updating. The gem here is that I, like so many others, could without issue update my iTunes, and then download the 2.0 iPhone software. It is obvious by these threads that by the time I did this, Apple was already experiencing serious server issues. To not post a warning that the next step, installation of the 2.0 software would carry risk of operation is inexcusable. I work in electronics and I cannot think of any other mission critical device that would be rendered completely useless after all downloads and all installs are complete. A simple warning would have gone a long way.

While Android 2.0 is a min requirement, the cpu the phone or tablet or such device has is what makes the (huge) difference on whether current release of mobile Firefox will work or not.
You mean the '''HTC Droid Eris''' which is a modified variant of the HTC Hero.
Sorry but this phone is not compatible with the current mobile Firefox releases due to the ARMv6 (ARM11) CPU it uses (Qualcomm MSM7600A) when the releases work on ARMv7 cpu's. If it is not in Market then it likely means the hardware is not compatible.
You can perhaps try the experimental ARMv6 nightlies (Fennec).

  • Frozen droid

    phone frozen, any help?

Why do you guys keep spewing the same mess???!!! Haven't you got the memo?!?! WE HAVE ALL TRIED THIS!!! It does not work!!! I actually held the power button and the camera button and I got it to fire up!  ...except...battery was low and wouldn't charge. Also, it wouldn't recognize my google acct.,further rendering the phone useless!!!!
Yes, I took it into the store. Seems I knew more about resetting the device more than the vzw employee! Once I got it to the home screen he plugged it in and confirmed the phone not recognizing the USB! His only suggestion... maybe it's fried? It's outta warranty so... Ya gotta update next month ( not the 1st time I've had a droid act up a few months before my update... hmmm?!)
No thanks verizon, the droid 4 is ok, despite the fact motorola got rid of important keys (i.e. the back key amongst others, which is one of the main reasons I like qwerty phones, rendering the phone even more useless when the screen freezes!!!)while they 'improved' the physical keyboard with the number row! Because I know if I break down and buy the 4, the 5 will be out within a few weeks!!!
I think it is time for a change!!!

  • Non Camera Droids?

I love tech toys like everyone else here, as soon as I started hearing rumors of the original Droid with the slide out keyboard I knew that's what I wanted to get (after many, many, full retail price purchases of "top dog" dumb phones). I love that phones are getting impressive cameras, and the idea of front facing cameras for video chat is, well, Back to the Future awesome status.
Unfortunately, working for the Govt. where I work, I can't have a cameraphone. I bought a BB Bold 9650 non camera, and the BB system sucked so bad that paying the early termination fee was worth it to stop using it and get rid of the second line I added just for work. So, after going back to just my Droid on one line I ended up removing the lense cover on my Droid, drilled out the camera, and filled it with an epoxy rendering the camera PHYSICALLY disabled. That method of having a non camera phone is perfectly acceptable at work. I'm comfortable doing this to phones with rear only cameras, but front facing ones are going to be a different story I'm imagining.
I'm in my upgrade window right now, but the only phone that I'm seeing that's a possibility is the Droid Pro, but there's 2 problems with that one - 1: it's got a traditional sucky BB layout for the keys, and 2: I can't confirm it actually has a non camera option. I've seen rumors, but nothing as far as options for ordering it that way.
Are there any 'other' non camera Droid phones coming out? I know these are mainly consumer driven devices, thus they have 15 cameras strategically placed all over the phones, and if I could have one and bring it to work, believe me I would in a heartbeat... but is there anything on the horizon for those of us that have jobs that require security clearances?
    Thanks in advance..........

I suspect the reason Verizon has not invested in the development of a non camera smartphone is the market is SOOOOOOOOO small for such a device, the price of the device would be ridiculous large for the consumer.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Droid and don't feel an overwhelming urge to swap it out for anything else just yet... my power button doesn't work quite right from time to time, but this phone has seen heavy use over the past year and hasn't let me down. I'm just kind of disappointed that the big V doesn't have many options concerning non camera phones. Besides, the Droid is probably the best phone they picked up so far... not loaded up with all that MotoBlur crap and apps you can't get rid of (useless bankrupt blockbuster video app anyone?). Maybe I'll go back to rooting this phone again and have fun like its brand new again.

  • Getting my Droid X2 replaced for the third time...

Don't really have any questions that need answering, just feel like getting peoples' input on my issue.
I am primarily a business user. While I won't deny that I use my phone for Facebook and Instagram when I'm sitting bored in a meeting, more than 80% of the time I spend on my phone is work-related. With that in mind, the most important features for me in a device are (in no particular order):
    Battery life
    Performance (speed, responsiveness, etc.)
Reliability (low frequency in terms of crashing, force closes, hangs, forced reboots, etc.)
Compatibility with corporate email and calendar
To date, the Droid X2 has met (and when it comes to battery life, exceeded) all of my expectations in those areas except one: reliability.  My phone encountered issues this week that interfered with my ability to conduct business, and I was forced to contact Verizon Support.  The rep, Brandon, was extremely helpful and I get the feeling that he did all that was in his power to help me out. He suggested that he might be able to get me a different device in the same tier, since I have had the X2 replaced so many times. Unfortunately Brandon's supervisor did not approve the order, and I didn't have time to attempt to speak with his superior.
I understand that giving a different device as a replacement is not covered by warranty or company policy (or if it is, someone please let me know ), but it should be obvious that the Droid X2 is an unreliable device. I am not a vanilla user - I have been involved in Android development since the HTC Dream (G1) - but I have left my Droid X2 bone stock since it worked well enough. I know all of the troubleshooting options available and try them all each time before calling support. It is my honest and sincere opinion that each and every Droid X2 that I've had has been faulty.
With that in mind, do you think Verizon ought to switch me out for a different model?  I honestly don't care about having the hottest new smartphone, I just want something that meets my needs and isn't a downgrade. Not trying to start a firestorm here, nor am I trying to rant and rave towards VZW - just interested in discussing the topic.

    Good day Jon;
I've had my Droid X2 since June of 2010. I am currently on #3 due to lockups, freezing, overheats and virtually all the issues you can find in this forum. I at first assumed it was something I was doing or loading. Having been in talks with Verizon, Google and Motorola. Each handset had been reset to factory numerous times. Would work for a week or so then start the same issues.
I must say that Verizon and Google have been the best in working with this, Motorola has been absolutely useless in resolving known issues with their product. All my handsets were factory and the only apps from Verizon or Google. And the Droid X2 has had issues.
I have learned to trust Verizon and Google on this, but will never own another Motorola product. My last response from this company was to send in the only phone I own for their evaluation, and maybe in 10 days they would decide if there was a warranty issue. This even after Verizon replaced it previously.
I like the Android platform and looking forward to upgrading shortly to the Samsung line. I have other products of theirs and had very good luck. When issues have arisen they have been helpful and positive.
Thank you for the opportunity to let you and others know that many of us are here and to understand others have had the same issues.

  • Former iPhone Owner- Now Droid X

After 3 years with the original iPhone, I was ready to move on or move up. I was tired of the small screen, dropped calls, calls going straight to voicemail, dealing with iTunes (and the CONSTANT upgrades), Steve Jobs' attitude, no flash, poor camera, Edge network being useless, non-replaceable battery and memory, etc. The phone was a revolution when it came out but had become tired and more of a chore to use. I am not really a cell phone user, I just wanted a multifunction device to eliminate the need to carry around all those bits of hardware. It worked for a while because I did not really see how awful the AT&T network was. Most people want a phone that does tricks. I wanted a reasonably speedy computing device, good GPS navigator, MP3 player, and a good camera that also was a decent part time phone.
I evaluated a friend's Evo for 4 days. Loved the kickstand, the 4G speed from Sprint, the camera, and lots of other little things. But, as a stand-alone user the monthly cost was too high and the battery life was terrible - even with everything turned off. Since we already had a Verizon account, it would cost less to get a Droid X and join that plan. Actually, upgrading to a new iPhone or going to the Evo would cost roughly double that the Droid X.
Unfortunately, I could not get an evaluation of the X, I would have to buy one. After checking it out at the Verizon store, I was sold. Great device AND 1/2 the cost of iPhone service. It was a no brainer, especially with a 30 day money back guarantee.
After 3 days I am quite pleased with the decision. The Droid X lacks the polish of the iPhone experience. But that little edge is refreshing. I have been repairing and using computers since 1984 (remember the Imsai 8080?)  so I can hack my way through anything. That may be an obstacle to a newbie. They would be safer with the iPhone (the cell phone version of the Camry). Right out of the box (after activation) it would not connect to my computer. Went to the Web to find the solution (unmount the SD card and reboot). That alone would derail a newbie. Once done it performed quite well.
The call quality and performance alone was worth the switch. I am working through the "bugs". NO DOCK CONNECTOR!!! When will the Droid community get it together and make a DOCK STANDARD!!!!???? Without it you are forced to connect to multiple ports with multiple wires and deal with multiple problems. This is a MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE folks, put in a multifuntion connector. Yes, I bought the car dock. Small problem: ignition noise. Not a problem with the iPhone because the dock connector was well designed to eliminate EXACTLY those kinds of issues. O.K. I am scrounging up a ground loop isolator that will likely solve the problem. A little edge, right? I can handle it.
Loaded my legally purchased and ripped Seinfelds and videos. Uh-oh, most don't play, even though they are all MP4 format and created with the same software. Well, it seems that these devices use a different codec. UUUGGGGHHH!!! Will they EVER get this garbage standardized????? Oh well, rerip everything in M4V and hopefully that will take care of it.
I don't think the case will go the distance. I had the iPhone for 3 years and it looks like new. This soft touch plastic on the Droid has a bad track record for wear. We will see.
Will I keep it? Definitely. Will I ever go back to the iPhone. Nope, at least not for 3-4 years until I get the value that I have already paid for out of this device.
    Later,
    Mike
Friends don't let friends buy iPhones...

Very nice review mwspera1 and glad you are enjoying your X because it is a nice device and holds its own in my opinion......  Out of curiousity what app are you using to do your videos?  Im using DVD Catalyst 3 and it does videos perfectly and all you have to do is select Motorola Droid from list and the application will do the rest, give it a look at http://www.tools4movies.com/  also you might want to look and Meridian Media Player at http://www.appbrain.com/app/meridian-player-pro-verifier/org.iii.romulus.meridian.proverifier it does nice with playing diffrent formats of audio and videos and gives you widgets as well.

  • Droid DNA: Will it ever get an update to the OS?????

Droid DNA is on 4.1.1     When will Verizon give us 4.3

Be careful what you wish for.  Now that the upgrade to Android 4.2 and Sense 5 has been delivered, I'm seeing nothing but complaints.  I too have many complaints about it, including
I miss the unlock ring; the new unlock isn't cool or fun, and is a little skippy
Why did they eliminate the "zooming weather" on the prior lock screen? The weather on the new lock screen is boring.
Text notifications on the new lock screen are boring too. Where's the the old bigger one with the contact's picture??
I'm furious that double-tapping the home button no longer gives me thumbnails of all my homepages for instant access to them. WHY would HTC remove that simple but handy tool??
Infinite homepage scrolling - why give that and now take it away? I grew reliant on that too.
The app drawer now scrolls vertically instead of horizontally. Okay..whatever, HTC. Was it really that crucial to switch scrolling direction?
The stupid 3 x 3 spacing of the app drawer. At least that's fixable through the Grid Size option (though that's hard to find)
The 4x4 animated weather widget is gone and replaced with a black-and-white, non-dynamic 1x2 tile? No thank you. I used to enjoy the animations when checking my weather, and being able to swipe through my cities. Now that is all impossible. WHY?
The photo album widget used to show thumbnails of your last 24 pictures or so; now it only shows a big version of your last photo
The People widget no longer allows me to do a vertical view showing each person's latest activity; now it's just tiled profile pics.
The time and weather in the app drawer is completely useless. I don't go to my app drawer to get the time and weather.
The text bubble colors are horrendous, at least with my personalized background. I can't see my replies.

  • Droid Replaced 3 times

I am on my 3rd Droid & I'm having the same issues that I've had with my previous Droids.  I was assured that when they sent me this replacement if I had any problems with it they would replace it with a different cell.  I just got off the phone with Verizon & was told that they would only send me the exact same Droid as a replacement unless I wanted to purchase a Pre-owned phone at a discounted price.  I'm so frustrated right now - I just need a phone that will work all the time.
The problems that I'm having are:
    Phone freezes up
    Won't hold a charge
Sends text messages to the wrong people
Touch screen stops working when I'm texting
Any ideas what I can do?  I've already done the hard reset a few times & taken the battery off several times, deleted apps, etc.

Don't give up, it just takes a while to get someone to listen to you. Yesterday morning I unpacked my fourth replacement DROID from the FedEx shipping box and on the very first phone call it malfunctioned. Of course it was a refurbished unit.
I called my local Verizon store and while they've always been wonderful, the only thing they could do was offer to send a fifth refurbished handset to me. I called Verizon to discuss other options since I was not confident that another of the same thing would really fix anything.
Here's what I think is the key: Don't let your call be transferred to technical support! As best you can, stay on the line with Customer Service. In my experiences--
Customer Service Representative staff: caring, attentive, polite. Solution oriented
Technical Service staff: argumentative, dismissive. Blame oriented.
My phone call yesterday to John in technical support was a nightmare. He scolded me for being ungrateful that I got a $700 retail phone for $99 when I began my contract. He lectured me using ridiculous analogies like purchasing a new car and such. He insulted me by pointedly refusing to acknowledge that there may, in fact, be a problem with the equipment; suggesting instead  I didn't understand how to use it or was intentionally causing the issue. He talked  over me, explaining in detail the steps involved in Verizon's quality control process and how they only send out "like-new" equipment, even after I said I didn't care to hear about all that. He ignored for 25 minutes my repeated requests to speak to a supervisor. He actually stated  it didn't matter that I'd carried Verizon service uninterrupted since 1998 replying "Well I've worked for Verizon for a number of years." and then telling me it was "not any business of yours" when I asked him how long he has worked for Verizon. After 45 minutes of listening to this jerk and not losing my temper I finally cracked and used a single bad word, my actual sentence was: "You just cut me off [again, while I was talking]. You don't have to care but you do need to be ******* polite." At that point the he hung up on me, I shouldn't have cursed and I don't blame him for ending the call. I do blame him, however, for the 45 minutes of useless garbage he gave me before that point.
I was more stunned than angry and called back immediately while I felt I could still be level-headed. I spoke to Tanya in Customer Service and in less than five minutes she suggested an option that, while it wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, was fair. And more than that, she listened and understood that I was simply frustrated to have four phones not work as expected.
This isn't the first time I've called Verizon in the twelve years I've been a customer but I only realized yesterday that I'm consistently disappointed when I deal with Technical Support and generally pleased after dealing with Customer Service.
I'm going to stay a Verizon customer, I'm still glad to have them as my brand and I don't think changing carriers will mean I'll never have to deal with lousy employees again. Keep trying and if you feel the person you're talking to isn't listening ask to speak to someone who will listen. A contract works two ways not just one and if you've done what you're supposed to do, it's not unreasonable to expect the same of the other party. Good luck, maybe on your next call instead of a "John in technical service" you'll get to talk to a "Tanya in customer service."

  • Droid Razr ICS upgrade - Can I change lapdock settings?

I've got a Droid Razr and have been using a lapdock with it.  I just downloaded the ICS update, and now every window is full size on the lapdock.  Is there a way that I can get back to the "windows" mode, so that I can choose how large each is on the screen?
Before, I could have multiple windows open and visible on the screen.  Now I can only see one window at a time, and I can't re-size them.  It's like everything's in super-size mode, because it's using the whole screen.
Also, all of the favorites that I had saved with the Firefox app are missing.  Is there any way to get those back?

Sorry, I have the same issues.
Motorola level 2 support says when you upgrade from Gingerbread to IceCreamSandwich and Webtop 3.0, what you see is what you get, and there is no changing other than going to third party apps which of course - for the Motorola Lapdock, there are none.
And when JellyBean (Android OS 4.1) comes out, guess what?  No Webtop support at ALL!  So your Lapdock becomes useless, Verizon will not give you any money for it.
So it becomes a useless brick unless someone writes an App to replace the WebTop functionality - unlikely considering the small user base for LapDocks!
All the forums have the same complaint.  So how about we sue Motorola?  Any attorneys want to sue Motorola for loss of advertised function on a product I have owned for 4 months?

  • Droid mini won't charge since OS update

My Droid mini wont charge since updating the OS a few days ago.  It shows that it is plugged in but will not charge.  It will remain on and running while plugged in but once unplugged it dies within minutes.

    Lindsey,
I did try safe mode yesterday and that did not work either.  I have tried several different chargers and they all do the same thing.  the phone works fine when plugged in but dies within minutes after being unplugged.  I am on my jobs plan but pay for my service.  I feel I may have to cancel my line.  I went to a Verizon store Saturday and they told me there was nothing they could do for me and I would need to buy a new phone.  I cant use another of my companys upgrades, I just bought this phone maybe 6 months ago and it's now basically useless, and Verizon says theres nothing they can do for me.

  • Droid Incredible is the best phone!!!!!!!!!!

The Droid Incredible is good phone, fast video and Internet, one problem the battery is bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

it doesn't make the phone useless at all. i actually don't use wifi as i find it plenty fast on 3g. however, if i do want to use it, it takes about 5 seconds to turn it on. there's just no point in having it on wifi 24-7. when you want to browse then turn it on. also, i have the screen set at about 30% bright and find that it's actually better this way when i'm out in the sun and inside it still looks amazing. i leave gps on though. it's just like any electronic device. if you leave all the bells and whistles running, even when you're not using them, it'll drain the battery faster.
