3G service issues, no text sounds, hear other people's conversations, etc..

I'm having some issues with my new iPhone 3G... I wasn't having any of these issues with my old original iPhone... any thoughts?
3G reception... I live in downtown Denver. I've checked the coverage maps at AT&T's website, and I should have full 3G coverage in my area. I don't. In fact, if I have 3G turned on, I have no service at all... it actually says "no service" and I can make or receive no calls whatsoever. The Genius Bar at the Apple Store replaced the phone last week. This fixed nothing. They had no other answers and said they'd never heard of this issue before. My sister has AT&T with a Palm Treo and she lives on the same block as me. She gets fantastic 3G reception. My roommate has AT&T with an LG VU and gets great 3G reception as well.
Next problem... my phone doesn't make sound when I receive text messages. Apple support over the phone said to do a hard reset. So I did... and the sound works for a few hours... and then stops. The Genius Bar told me to do a restore on iTunes... so I did... and this seemed to fix the problem for a day, and then the problem came back. I did another hard reset, which again fixed the problem for a short while, but then the sound quit working again. This problem has been persistent on both my original iPhone 3G and the replacement 3G from last week.
Next... Two or three times a week I can hear other peoples phone conversations when I'm trying to have my own conversation, so I have to hang up and try the call again. And it's not like it's very faint... it's like they're right on the phone with me, but they can't hear me or the person I'm on the phone with. I've never had this problem with any other phone before. Both iPhone 3G's (my original 3G I bought a few weeks ago and the replacement from the Genius Bar last week) have this problem.
This next one is probably not so much a problem with the phone as with iTunes... every time I plug my phone into my computer to sync, it takes a minimum of 45 minutes to backup. I usually just end up canceling the backup because I don't have time to wait around. This is incredibly inconvenient... I don't understand why it takes this long. I have an iBook G4 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.4. I have the most current version of iTunes.
Quite often when I push the home button to try and do anything with my phone, the screen flashes and then goes blank. When I try to wake it again, the screen stays blank and the phone is completely unresponsive. I have to hold down the power button until the screen comes on with the option to turn off the phone to get the phone to respond. Both my original 3G and the replacement 3G have this problem as well.

Unfortunately, most of my advice is in the "hindsight is 20-20" category.
First off, I would never have purchased the peripheral accessories until the 14 day return period had expired. Second, you learned the hard way what the "14 days" really means.
Too bad you didn't do any homework, reading this and other forums and tech sites. Even word of mouth from others. That, more than anything could have steered you towards different phone choices from the get-go and I will leave that there with no further comment other than to say most of the issues you described have been discussed in this forum, ad nauseam.
Once you got into the refurbished phone exchanges, that is where things really went haywire. What someone tells you over the phone is a sketchy proposition, and when it comes down to it, it's your word against theirs.
I think Verizon tried to make it right, though. Remember, they don't make the phones. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You stated yourself you were a satisfied Verizon customer before this. Had the first two phones performed as they should, you would still be a satisfied Verizon customer.
Doubt any of that will make you any happier, but after you went through the effort of writing such a long post, I thought I'd try.

    If you're having the same problem I did where you could hear other people on a call, but they couldn't hear you and your microphone worked fine for everything else then you are in the same boat I was.
    After a week of trying to fix it, a friend and myself have our phones working correctly again and my phone has been working fine for the past 3 days now.
    To fix the problem, we re-downloaded the 4.2.1 file outside of iTunes and did a restore on the phone. (We both restored from a backup and it still worked). You can find the specific file download links on the 4th post on this page: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1052794&page=5 or through apple's support downloads page. Once downloaded, double click the file to open it (iTunes should open) and plug your phone in then do a restore. We both did ours from a backup and it still worked fine, the thing that has to be reinstalled is the update, which is what the restore will do.
    It took my friend three tries of downloading until his worked, but for me it worked on the first try.

    Good news! I believe I have fixed my phone!!
    A friend of mine was having the same problem that I was having where you could hear other people but they couldn't hear you.
    We fixed the problem by redownloading the 4.2.1 update. 4th post down on this page: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1052794&page=5 is a list of links to the update files. I downloaded the one for my phone and did a restore (from a backup) after downloading the file and double clicking it so iTunes opens. Since I've done this my phone has been working perfectly again!
    It might take you a few tries, it took my friend 3 tries until his worked right and it worked for me on the first try. I'm guessing something was screwing up during the download.

    When I am online and close my Macbook without closing the browser, then open it back up and resume online, there are times when I hear other people typing and music or whatever in the background. It's like wires of sorts are crossed. I thought it was because my bluetooth was on, but I disabled it and I acn STILL here other people. Can they hear me too? Is someone hacking my computer online?

    I've just came across this issue where I get absolutely fine sound out of my headset, but when I try to be a part of a call, they can hear me, but i cannot hear them. I have checked that my playback and mic setings are on the headset, and have done a test call on skype where i can hear the voice. I have also done an uninstall/reinstall and still no luck. Any ideas?

    I have looked over my setting multiple times and I can hear everything else on my computer but I join a group call and I can not hear the other people in it and it happens with other people as in like when other people join after a certain point I guess you just cant hear it anymore and we end up having to restart call like 5 times until everyone is finally able to hear again if anyone has any ideas on how to fix please tell

    I am having this issue too. When I initially join the call, everything is fine but if I need to drop out for any reason, when I return, I cannot hear their voices. They can hear me, but it takes a total restart of my computer - not just the Skype application - before I can hear anything on their end.

  • Issues with External Sound Devices & others - 13" Late 2011

    Out of curiosity, I run Diablo 3 on OS X and its been unplayable since ROS expansion, massive fps drops and crashes, Blizzard claims Apple stopped improving hd3000 drivers on 10.8.3, is this true? Also when I run the game through windows via bootcamp it performs better and doesn't not crash, is this related to hd3000 driver support still being improved in windows?
    Other issues I'm experiencing, facetime most of the time fails if I try to pickup a call from the macbook, sometimes it notifies me of the incoming call (iphone 5s) sometimes it doesn't. Bluetooth doesn't work, not even with apple devices, I can't pair any of them. External sound devices such as m-audio fast track pro, native instruments audio 8 dj, allen & heath xone 4d, they all have latency issues and sound clips and pops, even with the onboard sound I experience this if I open a couple graphic editing software while playing itunes. Checked sample rate in audio/midi setup, drivers, firmware, everything seems up to date, I'm not using a USB hub, I updated to Yosemite from Mavericks, which was a terrible upgrade from Mountain Lion and it completely lagged the computer, so when I upgraded to Yosemite I ran disk utility from boot and apparently repaired the hard drive successfully. Performance is better but none of the above issues were solved.
    So I'm thinking about formatting from scratch but wanted to drop a line here and see if others have any of these issues and/or some tips.

    I was using skype on my mac and i closed the mac lid itself before opening it again, and when i joined the group call again, i couldnt hear anything but they could hear me. i restarted skype, restarted my computer, checked my audio, did the echo test, nothing. I even logged onto a windows computer and still nothing, so it must be something wrong with skype itself, but i cant find anything on it.i can hear notifications, see them, but i cant hear the ringing for the group call or their voices at all, with or without earphones.help?

    try resetting the phone- press the home and lock button together until the apple logo appears. or go to the apple store it seems like a software issue

    No case.  The issue seemingly went away overnight.  I don't know what caused it to occur or what happened to make it go away.

  • Since updating to iOS 6 I no longer can hear the send and recieve text sounds when texting

    Updated to IOS 6 yesterday and now I am having trouble hearing the text "swoosh" or whatever it is called while in a converstation the sound you hear when you send one or recieve one. Also when my phone is switched to vibrate mode when I receive a text message all my phone does is light up and it dosn't not vibrate which stinks cuz if it is my pocket I don't know if I'm getting a text message. I went into the message settings to try and set a vibrate tone for when recieveing a text and It won't even vibrate when I click on an option or click to create my own vibration pattern. My phone still however vibrates when I recieve an email or when someone calls me ect.... just not on texts and no sound when in a text conversation as in sent and recieved sounds. My sister, and both my parents updated to IOS 6 yesterday and they are having not probems of any sort? Anyone else have this problem and know of a solution? Ive already tried resetting my phone thinking maybe it was a glitch but still have the same problems.

    I figured out my problem...... I have custom text tones set up for certain ppl and had the default text tone set to "none" well with the iOS6 update it made it so if your default text tone is set on "none" then you won't hear what I call the send and recieve text sounds when in a converstation... if you change the default text tone to any text tone other than "none" you will get your send and recieve sounds back.... kinda annoying if you don't won't random texts from ppl waking you up... so I made a custon text tone that is called silence with just recording a few seconds of dead noise then edited it and turned all the sound levels down to 0 and set that as my default text tone.... now I have the send and recieve text sounds in a conversation and everything is fine! Sorry Nehucskter the first time I had this problem thats the first thing I did was reboot my phone.... first thing you do for everything lol....
