3G speeds capped?

Just a quick question. The iPhone3G can do "HSDPA" 3G. According to wikipedia "HSDPA" is capable of "1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s.".
Thing i have never even been able to get over 1.4 so no where near the 14.4.
So question is is the 3G speeds in the iPhone3G capped?

The rates you cite depend on radio bandwidth. Different operators will use different amounts of bandwidth. I don't know how much AT&T is using.
More importantly, those rates are instantaneous peak data rates, not average throughput one might get in, say, a file download or streaming application. Peak rates will likely occur less than 1% of the time for a user, depending on what they are doing at the moment.
Average throughput is a more significant number as far as the user experience goes, but it varies widely on the number of users in a cell (they share a fixed total cell capacity), what applications they are using (file downloading, web browsing, etc.), and whether or not a user is near or far from a cell (closer in, better rates). Average throughput will, however, be much lower than the peak rate.
Peak rates never change, and so are cited as a convenience for comparison with other radio standards.

  • Who has the Unlimited Data Plan and has Been Speed Capped when You went over 5Gig?

Just checking to see how many others have been speed capped to 200Kb on the unlimited data plan when they went over 5Gig in a billing cycle? (you can get a one time reprieve if you call them at 1-888-483-7200)
Did they ask you to change your plan to 10Gig and Update your Equipment and sign a new two year agreement?
Did you know that Sprint is offering unlimited Data on their 4G network and that Verizon is trying to lock down customers that are not on 2 year contracts? (Gives them time to catch up with the competition) Marcus in Fraud and Investigation told me (when I told him that Sprint was offering Unlimited Data)  "...That is a better option..."
I am now looking into other options along with allot of the rest of you.

I was instructed to call that Fraud Department number and was treated like I had broken some kind of law instead of going over the 5 Gig fine print limit on my unlimited grandfathered in account. They would not even consider giving me a one time do over for being a MiFi newbie. I am hearing class action suit rumblings out there!!

  • Broadband Speed Cap

Ok, well I think I may have been capped.
I'm on the BT Infinity Unlimited Option 3, and my limit is obviously a hidden 300GB, I understand that. What I don't understand is that this is the FIRST time I've ever gone over the limit so I'm not sure how it works and I need some information.
I think I may have gone over my limit, which is why my internet is being capped from 6PM till 12AM (midnight).
When will my speed cap be removed?
    Thanks in advance!

The problem is I don't remember ever downloading 300GBs.
I've filled out a form to BT Customer Support to check for help. I don't remember my account details to sign into my account.
I usually LIVE streamed my Xbox 360 console on to a website, but that doesn't use download as i'm UPLOADING to a website, so i'm really unsure if i'm even at the cap.

  • Speed Cap

Why is there a speed cap of 30Mbps when the likes of EE and Three dont put any speed cap in place?
What is the need for a speed cap?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

BT are using EE's network, so the agreement will include the limits as you describe. Most (if not all) MVNO arrangements will be set up such that the 'parent' network have the better service levels, be that in terms of priority or data speeds.
I would hope this will change when/if BT complete the purchase of EE.
In practical terms the limits on data you mention will be of negligible importance. On a mobile device, what can't you do at 30/15 that you can do at double plus? Very little.

  • Speed capped at 0.5 mbps?

    Hi guys.
I live in a rural area around 4 miles from the nearest exchange. I have been with BT Broadband for several years and have always had a speed of around 0.5 megs and my intenet never looses sync (it may be worth noting i am on bt option 2, up to 16 meg i think). Recently i asked my neighbour (who is connected to the same telephone pole outside our house what speed his broadband was. He is with another isp (not BT) and said he gets a steady 1.5 meg speed and has done for over a year. At first i figured maybe something was wrong with the internal wiring in my house. So after some research i decided to removed the bell wire to all extension sockets and have installed a bt adsl faceplate on the master socket. (Also my router is connected to the master socket). I have also carried out a quiet line test on the line which seems to be perfectly silent.
Here are the stats of my Bt Home Hub 3
These results are identical when i plug the router straight into the test socket.
Obviously i have a rather long line to the exchange (61.7 db att) but i also noticed my Noise margin seems rather high or is that normal? Here is also my speed test result.
Also i have just tried a different router (TP-LINK TD-W8960N) which had no real speed improvement. Here are the statistics it gave me.
I notice this router says i have an attainable sync rate of 1920?
So to sum up, I was wondering is it possible that my speed has been capped at 0.5 megs? And if so can this be reset?
It may be worth noting that about a year ago i had trouble with a dodgy router plug on my home hub 2 which kept turning the router off. Is it possible this is why i was capped?
I am not expecting to get superfast speeds as i am living in a rural area. But it would be nice to atleast get the same speed as my nextdoor neighbour. 0.5 Megs is painfully slow in this modern day world. It seems i am the only person i know who still has to wait 15 minutes to watch a 360p youtube video.
If my speed does not improve i may consider moving to the same isp as my neighbour (although personally i would have liked to stay loyal to bt)
Thankyou for any help you can give me. Gav

Hey guys just thought i'd let you know that the moderators have been in contact with me. Totally surprised at how quick they replied to my request. (Less than a day)
Big thanks to Dean one of the mods. He has uncapped my line and im now receiving a stable 1.75 Sync speed.
Really amazed by how helpful you have all been and what a great job the mods are doing. Hopefully will be getting speeds around 1.5 Meg now which is 3 times faster than what i have been working with for the past several years.
It doesnt seem like much to some of you townies and city peeps. But for a rural area im really pleased with that.
So big thanks to Dean the mod, and to all you guys for your help!

  • Re: BT Infinity 2 IP Profile - Download Speed "Cap...

My BT Infinity 2 IP Profile has been consistently the same for nearly 2 years since I first signed-up for it and became available in my area, i.e. Upload Speed (US) = Up to 20 Mbps  / Download Speed (DS) = Up to 77.47 Mbps.  I was regularly getting US = 14-17 Mbps / DS = 73-75 Mbps.  Upon doing regular speed checks on my line using the BT Wholesale site, about 4 weeks ago, I noticed my IP Profile DS was reduced to/capped at (Up to) 65.74 Mbps.  Since, I have been receiving the same US as before but DS = 62-64 Mbps.
FYI, I have attached two screenshots but I am reluctant to give my phone number openly on here so can you provide a means for me to send it privately please.
I initially contacted BT Broadband Faults a few times, they did the usual bull**bleep** basic checks to make sure it wasn't my equipment and to give it 10 days to see if it was DLM.  I even hooked up a BT HH5 router to ensure any further line testing was done by the BT book.  After several days, it was evident it wasn't DLM despite BT Broadband Faults insistence to give it several more days until around 11.04.15, to which I did.  By this time, it was crystal clear it was not DLM and Broadband Faults were obtuse upon my persistence that I wanted the specific reason as to why my DS had been reduced/capped by 11 Mbps, and tried to palm me off with excuses such as "copper wire degredation". They refused to contact OpenReach or report it to them.
Note, I had a phone line fault in early Feb 2015 which the OpenReach Telephone Engineer changed lines to fix the fault at my local cabinet.  I was their when he did this and showed me that there weren't many Infinity customers locally.  My line speeds remained the same after and all stable.  I can rule out cross-talk.
I have made 3 complaints via the BT portal regarding this issue and all resulting call-backs have originated from India. Not one can categorically tell me the specific reason why I have, in essence, had my DS capped.  Just the usual bull**bleep** guesses by people not technically qualified to make such diagnoses.  All have been obtuse and said that my current DS remains within the terms of my contract, blah, and refuse to give me a reduction in price of my BT bill.  I accept this is correct, but they will NOT tell me the exact reason why my DS has been reduced/capped!!!!
I do not think it is unreasonable to demand to know the specific reason why the product I pay for has been reduced without an honest explanation why.
Please can you look into my case and any feedback would be much appreciated as this frustrating me a lot.

Sounds like you are being affected by the G.INP rollout to Huawei cabs but the modem being incompatible with it.

  • Download Speed Capped?

We've had Unlimited Fibre Optic for a few months now and whenever I've downloaded something, whether that be using my browser or programs like Steam etc. to download games, I've never seen my download speed go over 4.5 mb/s however when I do a speedtest, I get over 35 mb/s consistently. Surely this isn't right and I'm starting to think Sky has capped download speed for whatever reason. Any help is appreciated and my router stats are below along with the speedtest..  Broadband LinkDownstreamUpstreamConnection Speed40000 kbps9999 kbpsLine Attenuation8.6 dB0.0 dBNoise Margin26.2 dB31.31 dB  http://www.speedtest.net/result/4544529825.png

You are likely confusing megaBITS and megaBYTES.
    8 BITS (b) = 1 BYTE (B)
    So 4.5megaBYTES per second (4.5MB/s) = ~36megaBITS per second (36Mb/s)
Capital B or lower case b makes a huge difference.
Broadband speeds are (almost) always quoted in megabits per second, web browsers and apps often show speeds as megabytes per second, hence the confusion.

  • USB "Hub Deactivated"; speed capped

I connected my external hard drive to my MBP and received the warning that the usb hub it was connected to was deactivated. This happens every time I connect it to a different port, but only once per port after start-up. I'm not having this problem with any other USB devices. The transfer speed over the hub that my hard drive is connected to (yes, it still mounted) is capped at almost exactly 2.0 MB/s (and seeing as I'm trying to transfer about 45 GBs of data...I'm grounded for awhile).
The external drive is a 320GB WD Caviar SE, with a Coolmax USB 2.0 enclosure. I'm wondering if this problem might be caused by my enclosure, bu without another working enclosure I'm at a loss to troubleshoot it. Any ideas?

Don't know exactly what caused the overage of power. (It happens to me a lot when I am plugging in or unplugging my palm pilot).
You will need to restart the computer to get the USB functions back. Since you can't go to the menu and chose it you will need to hold the power button on the back left of the computer down for a few seconds until it power cycles.
When the CPU reboots, you should be good to go with the USB functioning again.

  • I think I have Been Speed Capped

    Hi all
I am on Option 3, Unlimited....
Last month my hard drive packed in and I lost all my iTunes library, Apple let me download it all again and my download usage for last month was 220GB.
At 4.30 today I did a speed test and I got 23mbps (my profile is set at 25mbps) with an upload of 1.6mbps (profile is 2mbps).
At 5.13 I did another test and my download speed was now 2.25mbps and the upload was is still 1.6mbps.
I changed anything on the router that I though could be at fault, I connected my laptop directly to the HH3 but the speed stayed the same.
It has now dawned on me that I might have been capped, but how can this be?
I thought the download limit was 300GB?  I used 220GB last month and am currently sitting at 40GB now, I did not receive a letter or email from BT to tell me that this was happening.
The only thing I can check is that after 12am my speed goes back to normal.
If it does where do I stand?  I know I did not go over the limit last month.

    Think I spoke to soon.
My download is still the same but my 10mbps sync speed is barely getting over 1.6mbps when I test it.
It was working fine up until 2pm this afternoon, getting 8mbps when I tested it, I have not changed anything so I have no idea what is going on.
I have tried to use the BT speed tester but it keeps freezing.
This is really starting to annoy me now, seems whatever BT gives me works for about a day then screws itself up.

  • E2500 Speed cap

Im using E2500 router and it is lowering my internet speed from 80 Mbit/s to 40-50. Direct connect to my PC is showing 80 Mbit/s. Why? Is a Linksys a China Cisco?
Im using wired connection. Using static ip, no vpn or l2tp.

Are you planning to leave the E2500 connected to the DLink router? When are you getting the slow speed? Is it when the E2500 is connected from modem - E2500 or from modem - DLINK - E2500? A slower-than-normal download may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer.  One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6.  The slow download is caused by the use of IPv4 as the default protocol in your network; the slower data transfer is rooted on the “translation” of the data into an IPv6 compatible form.

  • External Hard Drive - speed caps at 1MB/sec

From my computer I cannot get write speeds of more than 1MB a second to my external Lacie Drive. I can grab information off the External Drive fine, but cannot write to it faster than 1MB a second. This situation started after I crashed while writing to it.
    1. Plugging into another computer, everything works fine and can write fast to the external.
    2. Writing to the drive from a file on a network works fine. (pulling a file from my office network and writing to the External Drive through the computer with issues works)
    3. Tried different cables. This issue is with USB, Firewire 400 and 800.
    4. Reset the PRAM on my computer, still nothing.
    My setup is:
    - G5 / 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC
    - Mac OS 10.4.11 (cannot upgrade higher due to certain software requirements i'm running)
    - 1TB LaCie BIG DISK Extreme (USB2, Firewire 400, Firewire 800)
    Any ideas? Much appreciated.

I've e-mailed LaCie tech support and am waiting for a response. Since other hard-drives work with this machine I feel like there is some connection between this computer and this drive which won't let me manually write to it. I've transfered a huge file using the Terminal to the external drive and it went fine (at normal speeds). Very odd.

  • Speed availability at my location

Hoping someone can give some insight on how to fix this problem.
I currently live less than 2500 feet from the central office and my availability is provisioned at up to 3.0 mbps. When the technician came out to my home to connect the wires, he said he was able to get 10 mbps on my line. As a side note, I used to be located over 9000 feet from this same central office and was receiving 7.0 mbps. I've contacted sales/tech support numerous times to try and get my speed cap increased, but I keep getting punted back and forth. Sales states they can't increase my speed because the cap is set to 3 mbps, and tech states they cannot increase my speed because I'm maxed out at what I am currently provisioned for. When the tech agents test my line, they've reported back speeds on my line of between 7-9 mbps each time. I've had a sales and tech agent on a conference call and still can't get a resolution.
What else can I do to try and get my speed cap increased?

Thanks for your help Smith6612! I got the same run around answer, so any hail mary attempt you can make is very much appreciated.
If it helps, here is some info I pulled from my modem and traceroute. Not sure what to make of the traceroute.

  • 100GB usage cap

I have come back to BT recently after having had a lot of trouble with my previous ISPs connection speeds when trying to use HD TV services. I have option 3 "unlimited" and was assured when returning to BT that using such services as iplayer, sky player and the like would not give me any problems with either bandwidth or download capacity. I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have just received a warning email saying that I have exceeded 80GB for this month and if I continue to do this that a speed cap will be inflicted upon me. I am extremely perplexed by this I thought that a prerequisite of selling a service to allow users to watch/stream or download things via the Internet should be fit for purpose. It is obvious that reading through this forum there are a lot of people affected by the same problem as myself (possibly more than the 1% that they report) If the entire system is unable to handle the traffic that people require, a significant upgrade to this system is needed ASAP. I feel sure that as more people start to use high bandwidth services the problem is only going to increase and ultimately the ISP that invests in an infrastructure that can cope will receive a massive influx of new custom when it is put in place. I also do not understand how an alleged technically superior firm such as BT who hold most of the control over the network of wires and cables cannot provide a meter that lets you see how much you have used. Look forward to truly transparent unlimited source of Internet use at a reasonable cost SOON.....

I am in the same boat. I had an email yesterday to tell me I had gone over 80GB.
Then this morning I have another email to say I have gone over 100gb and they are restricting me! Problem is I tried to restrict using my internet yesterday so I don't know how 20gb were used in the space of a day.
I do have a PS3, Xbox360, laptop, PC and a mobile device that use my internet connection so I guess that my usage will be hight anyway. I am really annoyed now that I got this restriction imposed on me as its seriously going to affect me.
    Hi.
As I've said numerous times, and is falling on deaf ears with respect BT Mods or the other support teams - the 80GB email is *useless*. It only says you've gone over 80GB, this can mean anything from 80 to 99.99GB. It doesn't say by how much, or perhaps when the 80GB was reached.
Hence you can see how a 100GB email can be received a day later.
Also I've said that it's currently impossible for users to check their usage with regard "non PC" equipment. The hub or other router stats are typically of no use, particularly if the connection is reset.
The 80GB email needs to be altered now to reflect the actual use figure, not "over 80GB".
To be frank, you can challenge the FUP team and ask them exactly when you went over the 80GB mark, and by how much when the 80GB email weas sent out. They will almost certainly say that they can't/won't tell you. In which case tell them that the system is flawed and to remove the speed reduction immediately.
It is up to BT to prove these figures to users, and without giving these details - then the system is flawed to the extent of being of no value to anyone.

  • Is it possible to increase upload speeds?

My upload speed is reported as being 0.31mbps by BT's own speed tester, and checking with speedtest.net gave a somewhat similar 0.34mbps today (though this moves around a lot between 0.05 and 0.25 normally).
Is there a way of boosting this?
I've read about line speed capping, is this something that folks know how to verify?
