3GS 32GB - A Little Disappointed

Hi all,
First off, this phone (3GS 32GB 3.0.1 2 weeks old) has so many plus points that I'll definitely be keeping it. I do have some disappoinments though and, although I thought I'd researched fully (never owned an Apple device before) I'm hoping I've missed a few simple things:
1. I have 32GB but can't save a file anywhere!?! This must be something simple I'm missing. I'm using QuickOffice which gives a kludgy wifi sort of drive (better than nothing). I'm sure I'll kick myself when I find out how to save files but I'm happy to be embarassed
2. The GPS things is disappointing in it's accuracy. I've mentioned this in another thread but it's much poorer than my 2 year-old XDA Orbit II. In particular, Maps and TomTom both exhibit significant turning lag and poor direction.
3. I can't use voice dial over bluetooth. I believe this is to be addressed in 3.1 but can anyone confirm that a single short press on a BT headset will trigger Voice Dial in 3.1?
4. I can't skip tracks using bluetooth. Play/pause is OK but no track skip despite trying on many different headsets. I can't find out if this is addressed in 3.1 - does anyone have any ideas?
5. Battery life is atrocious! I googled lots and tried several full discharge/charge cycles but still it barely makes it through a day. I don't do much music, mainly 10 or so phone calls, 10 or so texts and Wi-fi, 3G and push for Exchange on all the time (exactly as old PPC, which lasted for days like that).
6. Despite Googling, I cannot find anyway to turn off the insistence on 'slide to unlock' when the phone returns from sleep/standby. Fine for those that want it but it strikes me as silly as I turned the phone on myself so obviously I want to use it and not have to unlock first. Is this an option anywhere?
These are my major bug-bears but, as I said, the smoothness and excellent integration of everything makes this a definite keeper so this is not a rant, just a request for some advice. Never having owned anything like this before, I apologise if my questions are silly or if I've asked them in the wrong place.
Regards

1. The iphone is not designed as a back up or external drive. The wi-fi solutions are the way to accomplish this.
2. I have had no problem with this. You can try reset, restore.
3. No one should confirm this, as it has not been released. Any one who knows is likely bound by non-disclosure agreement not to tell.
4. See number 3.
5. It seems that making through the day is common. I get a few days out of mine (not a heavy user). http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
6. No there is no option for this.

  • IPhone 4 32GB Stores 20%+ Less Audio Than 3GS 32GB?

It is an undisputed fact that I can store a LOT more audio on my 3.2GB 3GS (on O/S 3.1.3) than I can on my new iPhone 4 32GB. I mean a LOT less - like 20%.
I loaded the EXACT same settings, apps and songs into the iPhone 4 using a 3GS backup. Absolutely no difference. When I tried to syncronize the first time, it loaded the settings fine until it started to copy the songs over. I got an error message saying there was not enough room. I was going to be 3GB short! Yes, I lost 3GB of available audio storage on my iPhone 4 32GB vs 3GS 32GB.
I cancelled this operation and looked at the total "available" capacity of each device. The iPhone 4 was at 29.1GB and the 3GS was at 29.3 - the iPhone 4 obviously reserves slightly more for OS 4, but not significant enough to account for the 3GB less music storage.
I thought the error message might be a fluke, so I loaded my audio in little chunks until I reached capacity, and sure enough, I could load about 20% less songs than in my 3GS.
So what's up here? It makes no sense to me. One thing to note is that I'm using the on-the-fly 128 kbps conversion option (checkbox on the "summary" page when syncing). Since I copied over most songs on my 3GS when I was using iTunes 9.1 and OS 3.1.3, it could be that iTunes 9.2 (maybe in combination with OS 4) has a less efficient conversion routine when converting a 256 kpbs song to 128 kpbs. Or maybe OS 4 is reserving more space per song for some reason.
This probably (and hopefully) has nothing to do with the iPhone 4 hardware itself, I would guess, There's something going on with the conversion of audio that's less efficient in iTunes 9.2 or in O/S 4. On my iPhone 4, my summary page says I have 25.17GB of audio loaded - this represents 4,638 songs loaded. On my 3GS, it takes 23.56GB to store 5,333 songs.
Note that the 4,638 songs loaded on my iPhone 4 are a SUBSET of the 5,333 songs on my 3GS, meaning that all 4,638 songs are included in the 5,333 songs that I loaded in my 3GS (same songs), and yet my 3GS takes 1.61GB LESS to store 695 MORE songs. This is just the data for the audio itself and nothing else. So it's not extra space taken up by the OS or anything else.
If I use the average space taken up by my audio on my iPhone 4 and extrapolate, it would take about 28.94GB of audio space for 5,333, which would be 5.38GB MORE than the 3GS (that's 22.8% more). Of course, this is not 100% accurate because the song length may be different, but it's along those lines. Remember - same songs here using the same 128 kbps conversion feature.
Has anyone else experienced this? This is a MAJOR deal for me since I already was VERY disappointed that their was no 64GB phone, and now it's even WORSE because I have to unload ANOTHER 20% on my music!! This can't be a problem that's unique to ME in any way. Still confused as to what's going on here?

I'd double check all of your sync settings. Mine change from Iphone to Iphone, especially new ones. You are probably syncing movies or something stupid.
Maybe the artwork is coming through in a higher resolution?
Nope - I'm just talking about the AUDIO files. I'm looking directly at how much "audio" (only) GB capacity is listed on the "summary" tab in iTunes when each device is plugged takes to store THE EXACT SAME SONGS. Re-read the first post.
I've re-checked all the audio setting for both phones and they are exactly the same. This probably has something to do with allocating more space per file when doing 128bit on the fly conversions using iTunes 9.2 (vs iTunes 9.1) and / or under OS 4 (vs OS 3.1.3).

  • Compass isn't accurate. only on my 3gs 32gb?

    hello,
    I just bought a new iPhone 3GS, 32GB.
i was very satisfied when i first used it, it was very accurate and showed exactly where i am.
but the second time i used it, until now, it shows that the place i am at is a few blocks near.
this is very disappointing since the Compass is one of the main reasons why I bought the iPhone...
by the way, doing the figure 8 motion doesn't help at all.
    is it only with me?

You shouldn't have to pay to use the basic GPS (Israel may be different, but in other countries you don't have to). Launch the Maps. Go outside and press the button in the lower left. This should show a blue dot on the map. It will start out as a circle, and as it acquires satellites the circle should get smaller until there is just a pulsing blue dot. Tap the Directions button and you should be able to enter a starting point and an ending address. The Start button is used to display directions. It will only be enabled when you have both a starting point and an ending point entered.

I just got an iPhone 5 32GB and i have backed up my old 3GS 32GB via itunes (20GB of data on there) and it is taking a very long time to restore to my iPhone5. Its taken more than 20 hours and didnt complete.
The text "Time remaining ... hours" flickers.
I set it to start restoring from the 3GS backup yesterday at 1pm and the time remaining kept on increasing. I left it overnight and at 9am this morning the progress bar hadnt moved and it said 12 hours remaining.
I don't know why its taking so long. I unplugged it and it just set up as new phone. So i did a factory reset and tried again at 4pm and it is now 12am and it says 4 hours remaining and my computer occasionally flickers. (Its not a bad computer, 2 months old, i7, 6GB RAM, Heaps of HDD space). It also messes with google chrome and i cannot browse the web at all while it is trying to restore my iphone.
I have tried restarting my laptop and should i reinstall itunes? I simply dont see why it should take longer than 20 hours to copy over 20GB of data!
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you

I'm having this EXACT same problem with my iPhone 4, and I have the same computer stats (I have a Samsung Series 7)

i want to buy apple iphone 3Gs 32gb of centers, how to process a payment? here too expensive and whether the iphone isn't locked in indonesia,if i buy direct from apple center isn't in indonesia?

In Indonesia, Telkomsel is the ONLY official carrier. All iphones officially sold in Indonesia are sold as carrier locked to Telkomsel with NO provision to unlock them. If you want to buy an unlocked iphone, you will have to purchase from one of the locations listed in this support article:

  • N900 x i-phone 3Gs 32Gb - real competition or just...

Hi, I’m just a guy looking for answers beforehand to a new acquisition, I’ve sent this"e-mail" to Nokia support and up to now, no answer at all, I don’t know if it is a "taboo", but as consumer at least I would like to understand those points, and maybe here is the place to get the answers...
    See my questions below:
    “Dear Nokia,
About 2 months from now, I plan to buy a new mobile (my actual contract is expiring and I’m intend to have a new Smartphone).
I’ve been reading forums, magazines, etc. to actually have the best available Smartphone from today, and up to now, my intentions are strongly focus at the new N900 or the Apple iphone 32Gs.
Based onthe hardware and innovations, I would have no doubt to choose the N900, but a few things are really pulling me back to the new Apple i-phone, I will explain in detail:
    1)   Today I have a 6110 Navigator, I do like a lot this mobile, simple, practical and with a great built in GPS but unfortunately all the programs and advantages available for this model today are related to PC, but I have a Macbook and the only software available for Mac is the „Nokia Multimedia Transfer“, to be honest it is almost nothing, just like one simple internet explorer.
    2)   The reviews about N900 did not show up to now any „Mac friendly“ environment, I do understand that in percentage probably are more PC than Macs, but I do not believe that you would „ignore“ the big share available to be get from the Mac users.
    3)   What about the applications? Why up to today the OVI store is more „promising“ than reality? It is really frustrating to think about buy this kind of machine with a big limitation in this field, really.
    4)   The only thing that I would choose today the i-phone would be the full compatibility with my Mac (off course) and the tons of free or cheap applications available, but it is really frustrating to think that with this I would never be able to do a simple video conference via standard network or via the built in Skype, like the N900 does.
So, my intention with this e-mail is to have some feedback from your side, if the customer is the importance of your company (connecting people) I would like to feel part of it, and of course with a good feedback make-up my mind at once to buy the N900, otherwise I will be „obliged“ to go to the i-phone.
Thank you for your time and I hope I get this feedback someday before those 2 months...
    Have a niceday,
    Clayton”

I have the N97 and the N900. I was a little disappointed at these phones when they first came out had lots of issues. The N97 seems now to be working fine but is not as user friendly as the iphone with respect to the touch screen and apps. The advantage of N97 is that it has a key board same with the N900.
    My experience with N900:
The N900 has less that 6hrs battery life on normal use without internet. Its email program takes a long time to down load emails and to refresh so that you can see them. There is no option for headers only. There is no voice dialing. No Mac iSync support. They have left out "Canada English" in their regional setting but have "Canada French". Scrolling within the apps is not smooth. There are not that many apps yet.
So there are many things like these that need to be sorted out. Basically it is a work in progress. I was surprised how they launched a product which is not complete in its basic functionality.
The basic idea of the N900 is great but product is yet to deliver the hype, I am hoping that Nokia will come through eventually. My advice is to wait until they come out with the next update which should resolve most of the issues.

  • IPhone 3GS 32GB.... Please assist

Just purchased the new iphone 3GS 32GB from the Sydney apple store [AU $1040] ... the phone had 3.01 software and I would like to upgrade to 3.1... Is it safe to do so through the itunes coz I'm not sure whether its factory unlocked or locked ?.... Is there anyway to check whether its unlocked or locked?.... I also was able to get cydia installed in it by a technician and was also wondering whether that affect if it will be fine to upgrade through itunes....

I could tell you to upgrade to 3.1 with no fear. I did and it works fine. I predict that you will also get several posts here telling you to NOT upgrade for various reasons. The only thing I can add is that most people who upgraded have no problems.
And yes, if you don't upgrade, your phone will probably work as well as it would have with with 3.1.

  • IPhone 3GS 32GB, no service/searching

I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB, i recently updated to iOS 6.1, and since then my phone is always searching or i have no service, i will get a message saying i need to restore my phone with itunes. I am on GiffGaff network and the carrier setting are all input correctly.
I will restart my phone and then i'll have the iOS lock screen where i can only make emergency calls from, I cant unlock my phone to access anything, no music etc. Sometimes i will turn my phone on and off and the problem will be rectified, but then it will just lose signal again and i will be forced to restart over and over again until i can acces everything.
Its very unreliable as a phone now, any help and suggestion would be greatly appriciated.

These are the screen shots i've managed transfer to myself while i was able to to get wifi.

  • My 3GS 32gb Iphone has just started cutting out even when battery is almost charged - I have to charge it for a short time to prompt it back into action - I now have to watch apps with the charger connected no problems then?

I have just started getting a problem with my 17 month old 3GS 32gb Iphone (no heavy use) in the sense that it keeps randomly cutting out and it requires a short boost charge to get it started again even when the battery is charged between 70 to 90%.
    Any suggestions?
