3GS, 4.2.1 update broke wifi

After updating my 3GS phone to 4.2.1 (from 4.0.1, or 4.1...I don't remember) wifi no longer works. That is, if I turn on wifi in Settings and connect to a wireless network, connectivity fails. Can not get to email, WEB sites, etc. I have to use the 3G network even when wifi is available.
This is the case on 3 different wireless networks so far (home, office, coffee shop).
I know. I know. There will be a myriad of "works OK for me", and a handful of "I'm having a similar problem". Such is the case with iOS if you're not using an iPad or iPhone 4.
Thanks
Jim

Have you tried:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings?
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings?
Restarting the device by pressing and holding the Home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears?
