3GS battery life question

So anyway, I've took a 3gs back for battery life issues. And the Genius bar gave me a return, (not for the battery life but for something faulty with the display)
Well, I am really glad I took it back. My phone is actually working a lot faster, and now it doesn't freeze to a white screen that is somehow able to operate even though you can't see what your doing (why I got the return)
I was wondering two things.
1) It is a week 29 (July) phone, so would it be possible that it is a refurb? I ask this because I want to know if i should condition the battery.
2)Is there any reason why I can get advertised (or close to) battery life while making a call, but 2/3 (or less) battery life on internet use?
I am still really happy with this phone compared to my last one. I had over an hour of use purely on the phone, and had 95% battery life, It was amazing. Compared with the 80% it would be at on my previous phone

Thank you for replying, and if you could again, it would be greatly appreciated.
1)I was asking about whether they would be able to refurbish the phone, which is a week 29 phone. And I bought it on august 8th. Because I don't think it would be really necessary to condition a refurbished phones battery.
2)I have excellent wifi strength, 3g off, brightness at 50% or less, location services on, not using other apps, just the safari app, not using speaker, room temperature conditions. I just think it is weird that I can get about 10-11 hr battery life just using the phone function. But I think I am getting less than 5-6 hrs on wifi internet

  • 3GS battery life and current location problems

I have a 3GS. Until I took a holiday in Mexico it worked fine. On return, the battery life is one half or less as before. I thought I may have picked up a virus or something connecting to the local WiFi (data roaming turned off). I restored a backup and no change. Then I noticed that the 3GS was not able to find its location. I tried several suggestions from several forums to no avail.
    The details:
I recently took a holiday in Mexico. On return I noticed that the battery was not holding a charge as well as it did before I departed or while I was in Mexico for that matter. On return it takes two to three charges to make it thru the day. My first thought was a virus or malware. I did some research on the forums and it was suggested that I do a restore. Ironically, gratefully, I had done a backup before I left so I preformed a restore. There was no change to battery usage. Trying more trouble shooting I discovered that my iPhone cannot find its current position. Once again I researched the forums. I tried changing the international location and back again, resetting the network settings and turning airplane mode on and off. I was able to find a location that was incorrect (several blocks away compared to right on before my holiday) one time and now once again my iPhone cannot find its/my location. On occasion, not every time, when trying to find my location I receive an error message “Could not activate cellular data network”. My theory is the battery life and in ability to find its location may be connected.
    Any help will be appreciated.

I read this and felt a funny coming on....
I know its not funny when an appliance that we depend on doesn't work right, but my funny bone said, "Did you shake the phone to reset the GPS, and did you fly backwards from Mexico to reset everything as it was before you left?"
    Forgive me!!!!

  • IPhone 3GS battery life iOS 6.0.1

I updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS 6.0.1 and my battery life has gotten terrible.  Use to get all day off a charge not it's dead in <6 hours.  Any fixes?

I have the same issue w/ my 4s.  My battery life was more than acceptable running iOS 6.  I updated to iOS 6.0.1 & now my battery life is HORRIBLE!!!  I just charged my phone & according to the usage, ie. Time Since Last Full Charge, was fully charged, yet it only said 94%.  I shut my phone off after unplugging it & when I turned it back on, the battery read 97%... ?????
There is definitely something that needs to be addressed w/ the 6.0.1 update!!  Really wish I hadn't gotten it!

    Update of the firmware?
    Thanks
That is NOT what you said previously. You said: "I try to close all the app, close all tab of safari, roaming is off for the data" We are NOT psychic. Your original statement does NOT indicate that you have 3g off.
If the phone is unable to lock onto the preferred  provider you set in manual mode, it will be constantly searching for the carrier signal. This will drastically reduce battery life. If you are out of range of the carrier you want to use, put the phone in airplane mode.

  • Why is my iPhone 3GS battery life shorter in 6.0?

Since I upgraded to OS 6.0 my iPhonr 3GS runs out of battery life before the end of the day.

There are hundreds of posts regarding battery life after iOS updates.
Try a search of the forums and follow the troubleshooting suggestions you find.

  • 3G and battery life question

I know the 3G uses much more battery up when surfing etc ... but does anyone know if it also ***** up more battery life when it is just on standby (but with 3G on)?

OK - as my process of elimination continues, I think I have found the first smoking gun.
So, I still have 3G, WIFI, BT and location assistance disabled. I enabled push mail and 50 minutes later, I found that the phone was warm and the battery had lost about 25% of the total battery capacity.
The data xfer was only 4 or 5 MB, so it was not moving a lot of data around.
So I have deleted my dot Mac or should I say Dot Me account and my Yahoo account, only leaving the Exchange account to see if the situation improves. Sadly, it will be a while before I know, since I have to recharge my phone. It was full at 7am, I turned all the power draining functions of at approx 8am (apple care recommendation). I have not been using it - total call time 8 minutes - Total data xfer 4 MB, no games, not internet. Was at about 50% at 3pm, turned push back on and by 3.50pm it was down to approx 25% and at 5pm needs to be recharged.
I will post what I find out.
Assuming turning of yahoo mail account and Mac account fixed the push problem, I will try switching 3G back on. If it did not, I will switch Exchange push off - if that fixes it, I will switch Yahoo and Mac Push back on to see if it is a push problem, or a MS Exchange Push problem.
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • IPhone 3gs Battery life with 3.1 firmware

Any news regarding battery life with firmware 3.1???? I have lost at a minimum 25% after upgrading from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Have reset....the device alone and with iTunes....Need help...

I originally posted this in the wrong discussion...
Since upgrading to 3.1, it looks like the biggest battery drain is due to using PUSH with my Exchange email. I can turn off PUSH, use FETCH (even over 30 minute polling intervals) and battery life is close to 24 hours on a charge. Turning on PUSH, but not using it for email (other than my .Mac account (MobileMe), decreases the life by a couple of hours, still well beyond the normal 10 hour work day.
Turning PUSH on for 3 Exchange folders (Inbox and 2 sub folders) results in a drastic reduction in battery life. It can use over 50% charge while on standby... over a 3 hour period. I've managed this to an acceptable (8-12 hours, depending on phone calls) by limiting using Exchange rules to keep most important email to the Inbox and one sub-folder (I may eventually leave all important stuff to the Inbox) and move other stuff into different folders that I can still check on occasion.
Other PUSH activities, using apps like BeejiveIM, AP News, MLB.com, i.TV and even .Mac don't seem to affect the phones battery life too badly.
I'm wondering if Exchange w/PUSH is doing too much, besides listening for new mail and alerting on it. Could the process be simplified to only listen, alert, and mayby increment the count (not downloading headers or message bodies until one actually checks for messages... the iPhone still polls once you open a mail folder anyway).

  • Battery life questions

    Hi all
I am seriously considering an iphone but I like to have a good battery on a phone and not have to worry about getting through a day without charging it. If i sent approx 15 texts a day, listen to 3 hours of music/podcasts (via headphones) browse the web a little say 10 mins and possible make a 5 min call - am i likely to have the phone run out of juice before the end of the day.
I was planning on disabling wifi and bluetooth all the time and possibly 3g when I dont need the internet - would be interested to get everyones thoughts
    Thanks
    nick

Yes your iPhone will last over a day with these activities.
The only thing that ***** out battery would be over 2 hours of surfing+ over 1 hour of video + over 30+ gaming.
But with things you want to perform, your iPhone will surely last over a day. may be 1.5+ days.

  • Magic mouse battery life question

I've used my mouse for ~20 hours and its life has dropped from 100% to 85%. I've read other posts about buying lithium-ion AAs but is 133 hours of mouse life normal? My keyboard is still at 100% for the same 20 hours of work.
    Thanks,
    RLK

Lithium batteries definitely last the longest in a MM but they're not cheap, and they're also not good for the environment when they end up in a landfill either. I suggest acquiring a set of high capacity NiMh rechargeables - four ought to be enough. Each pair wont last anywhere near as long as the disposables, and due to the way the MM measures the remaining charge wont even start at 100% when you first put them in either, but they'll save you tons of money in the long run, as well as being a lot greener. I keep a pair lightly trickling in the charger to avoid self-discharge, ready to swap over the moment they're needed. Works a treat.

  • IPhone 5 battery life question

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I recently just got the iPhone 5 after years with android and let me say this is the best phone I've ever had. Only one issue, the battery. I'm coming off a droid razr maxx so I know the iPhone doesn't have the battery capacity that the droid did but I have been getting around 5 hours of usage before my iPhone dieing and after having everything turned off Bluetooth, wifi,GPS etc. I mean EVERYTHING turned off even icloud so thats not the problem. I did a restore today but it seems even worse now its dropping a percent every 30 mins with my phone locked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you. Btw this is my first iPhone

Coold it be perhaps there's a bug within iOS 8 where the processor uses battery wastefully? Ive read that battery issues seem to be one of the big concerns with iOS 8...
That hypothesis has been put forth by some users with every version that has been released since 1.1 almost 8 years ago. So it's either been a bug in every one of the 3 dozen or so versions that have been released, or there's some other explanation. @AmishCake's is the most likely.
There have been some reports that disabling iCloud fixes it, which most likely means there is some device on your iCloud account that is updating iCloud data constantly, and the iPhone is trying to keep up. It's also been a problem almost from day one (September, 2007, when MS Exchange support was added) with Microsoft Exchange calendar syncing, thanks to a long-standing design flaw in the MS Exchange protocol. If either of these is suspected there are ways to troubleshoot it and fix it. After than, Facebook is the worst offender.
The key to determining if there's an actual problem is to look at Settings/General/Usage and compare standby time to usage time. If they are the same there is a background process running continuously. Killing apps in the Quick Launch screen does not necessarily kill background processes.
Unrelated to this issue, routinely killing apps is not a good practice. See: http://www.howtogeek.com/204552/no-closing-background-apps-on-your-iphone-or-ipa d-wont-make-it-faster/

  • Apps like GameCenter and YouTube...battery life question...

So if i stay logged in the above apps and some similar apps, if I delete them at previous apps menu without signing out
    1. do they still run on the background?
    2. Games like Infinity Blade uses GameCenter Feature...does ot use more battery when its enabled?

I'm not aware of any games that run in the background when leaving the app. An app/game that has been updated with the iOS4 multitasking API to be suspended/not quit when leaving the app will be suspended/not quit when leaving the app. When returning to the app the game will begin where it was left off or suspended. A suspended app should not use any battery since the app is suspended - not running.
The YouTube app does not run the background. It doesn't matter if you are signed in or out of your YouTube account when leaving the app.

  • After reading battery life post, I may have a problem.

Ok reading the battery life question, I wonder do I have an issue. This is my first week of true iphone use..the first week, I played with everything all the time and the battery wouldn't last a day.
But this week, normal usage - phone calls periodically, a few checks of safari or the weather, but not heavy usage, and I burned through the battery - at 10% by the end of the day starting off with a full charge. Charged it again last night, then didn't do anything.
Made one 6 minute phone call this morning and battery meter has already moved down in my estimate about 10%...WTH?
Problem or does the battery life generally suck and all the people who posted about battery life are the exceptions, not the rule?

    mthowell,
One think that is often overlooked when comparing battery life, is how much signal do you have on the cellular network?
The further you are from the tower, the iPhone like nearly all cell phones, will use more power to keep in contact with the cellular tower. Other things that can weaken the signal will also make a difference, such as being in a building with walls that affect the signal.
Any time the screen is on, or the iPhone check email, that is usage.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.
    Nathan,
Thanks..I do understand the signal strength issue. I'm basically just comparing it to my other AT&T phones. While I realize there are a ton more things to drain the battery life on this phone than my RAZR, to already have the battery draining by 10% after a full charge and one 6 minute phone call in full cell coverage..nothing else is why I think there's a problem.
What are my options when I call Apple? I mean, no genius bar dude (or dudette) is going to sit there and watch my battery manually drain..a watched pot never boils right?! So, all I can say is that x number of users on the apple support group have longer battery lives - what's my issue? That will go over well, I'm certain.

  • Question about full cycle charges and battery life

So I've had the new iPad since day 1 and absolutely love it, though recently I've noticed that my battery life doesn't seem to hold up as well as it has in the past. I've done three full cycle charges since getting it however during my latest one I accidently brought along my iPod wall charger and not the one that comes with the iPad. My iPad was fully discharged and I plugged it in assuming that in the 7 hour window I had that it would be fully charged within 5 hours, but this was not the case due to me having the wrong charger. After about 7 hrs of charging it was only at around 60-70% so I had to unplug it, bring it home, then plug it in once more using the correct charger. Probably a fairly obvious question but does this not count as a full cycle charge because I unplugged it? Should I perform another full cycle charge even though this most recent one was not even a week ago. I know you're supposed to completely discharge your battery as few times as possible so it worries me having to do it again so soon.
About battery life, I've noticed lately that my iPad battery seems to be depleting quicker than normal, and was hoping that perhaps this was caused by being overdue for a full-cycle charge which I may have flubbed as seen above. I'm aware of a majority of the little tips and tricks to prolong battery life however I'm not so knowledgeable on the "do's and don'ts" of charging the actual iPad so any information on that would be helpful. I should also note that unfortunately I accidently left by iPad in a hot car for a little over an hour and was tremendously devastated knowing what this can do to the battery, so could this be the main cause for a seemingly weaker battery?
    Thanks for any feedback!

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
