3GS can't receive texts with iOS 5?

So a couple of days ago I made the mistake of updating my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5. I can use everything else like normal, including the phone and I can send texts like normal but can't receive any, which is awful. Actually, I can only receive texts from people with an iPhone with iOS 5 installed. I can't see how or why this would happen. I know there's the new iMessage with the update, so I guess maybe it's not even letting me get texts at all, just messages from my friends through that? Has anyone else encountered this problem? I have no idea what to do. I've reset it multiple times as well as powered it on and off. I haven't restored it but I don't really want to lose all of my texts and whatnot. Plus I don't see why that would make much of a difference anyways. Is there something I can turn off or enable? Pleaseee help, I'm desperate. Thanks!

you aren't receiving text messages because of a recent change in the way ios5 allocates space for the messages app.  It used to be that the messages app could store as many messages in memory as you had space, but with ios5, they have drastically reduced this "unlimited" storage amount to a mere 15MB (most likely to keep the messages app from slowing up).  Depending on how many MMS messages you've sent/received, this is anywhere between 50k and 75k messages.
Moral of the story is you will have to delete a good amount of your text messages (else restore and setup your device as a new device and not restore from backup).  If you're like me and don't really want to part ways with all the memories you have in SMS form on your iphone, you can try a utility called PhoneView for mac, that allows you to see and archive all your text messages to your computer.  This is only available for mac but there is a competent PC version called TouchCopy11 that you could use as well.  Bad news is none of these are free.  If you don't really care about saving your SMS messages from the past, then by all means delete all the ones you don't need and you'll see you're device will begin receiving texts again.
Hope this helps.

i only receive sms when i turn imessage off, this just started yesterday after i switched from my 5s to the iphone 6.
    this is very frustrating

    Hi shineshinebobo,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are not receiving sms messages. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages - Apple Support
If you can't send and receive SMS
You will need these to send and receive SMS:
    An iPhone
A strong cellular network connection through a cellular network provider
A domestic SMS plan from your cellular provider (You might need an international messaging plan to send SMS to an international contact. Contact your carrier for more information)
A roaming SMS plan when you use a cellular provider's network that is different from your billing cellular provider's network (Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.)
To resolve issues sending and receiving SMS, follow these steps
Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
Make sure that you have a cellular network signal in the status bar of your iPhone. If there's no signal, learn more about troubleshooting no service.
    Restart your iPhone.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Remove your SIM card and insert it again.
If you still can't send or receive SMS, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact who's trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that you're using the area code with the contact's phone number. When sending messages internationally, you also need to use the contact's international code.
If you're using a "Pay as you go" SMS plan, make sure it has enough available balance. Contact your carrier if you're unsure of your SMS plan or the available balance.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact from the Contacts app. Send a new message to the contact.
Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process might not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
Contact your carrier to confirm that you're provisioned for sending SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
Contact your carrier to verify there are no blocks or filters placed on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • How can I receive text messages on my iPhone and iPad ?

How can I receive text messages on my iPhone and iPad?

If you are using the iMessage app on your iPad, you need to use the same email address you use on your iPhone.  But, be advised, that when people email your cell number on your iPhone, you will not get the message on your iPad.  iPad is not a cell phone.  And also know that iMessage on iPad is intended to only let you text with other iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) devices.
If you want to be able to text to anyone from your contacts list (those for example who do not own an iOS device), there are free apps in the App Store, such as TextFree, which you can download.  But, TextFree will assign you a number (I know kind of odd since iPad is not a cell phone), which you can then text anyone you want.  You'll just need to let your friends know the texts are coming from you.

Why can't I text with non Apple equipment?

You can with third party apps. You just can't use Messages in order to text since it only works with other iOS devices and Macs running Mountain Lion.

  • All of a sudden I can not receive text messages on my MOTOX. Does anyone know how to solve this problem. I can send them, but can't receive them.

My MOTO X was working fine, then all of a sudden, I can not receive text messages. I have checked the settings and they look correct to me, and I have done everything the web site recommends, except wiping the phone and starting over, to try and fix it. Has anyone else had this issue, and how did you resolve it?
    Thanks so much.

That's strange that your Moto X wont receive any text. Thank you for trouble shooting the issue. Let's see what's going on! Does your device have any physical or liquid damage? Does anyone else have an issue with calling or texting? What zip code are you in?

  • Disable iMessage as can't receive texts from iPhone users on new Android phone

I have done everything I can find online about this:
Deleted/unregistered the device from my profile
    Changed my password
Changed the number to 000000000 on my iPhone
Switched iMessage off on my iPhone
Deleted the device from my iCloud account.... HELP.
When I call apple I can't speak to someone it says I need to pay £25 as I do not have cover. Really?! Is there another number I can call? Any help appreciated. Will it work eventually? I have waited a week and still can't receive text messages from my husband on his iPhone. It's driving me mad! I love my new Android phone (LG G2) but this is so frustrating.

Hi zara343, I had a similar problem. I have a iphone and my daughter changed from iphone to android. We couldn't receive text messages to each other, she had no other problems with her other contacts, just mine. It was driving me crazy. My phone kept recognizing her android as an iphone. Yes I turned iMessage off and yes I could receive my daughters messages, but my two other daughters and a few friends had iPhones, so I didn't get their messages. My problem is now fixed, I tried to send a message to my daughter and it came up undelivered, so I pressed the red exclamation mark to the right of  the undelivered message and it gave me the option to try again, send as a text message or cancel. So I pressed send as a text message and my daughter received it, I tried again and message undelivered, so again I pressed the exclamation mark and went through the same process as before. I thought what a pain but did a third and now my iphone does not recognise her phone number as an iphone. So your husband would have to do this with his iphone and I am confident it will work, and me as an iphone user can keep iMessage switched on. Hope this helps.

  • I can't receive text msgs from Iphone users-what gives?

Hi,  I have had this issue for weeks.  I have been trying to find a solution through t-mobile but so far I still can't receive text messages from Iphone users. It is across the board.  I know about 5 people with Iphones and I can't get text messages from any of them.  Does anyone know why?  By the way, they all can receive my text msgs, no problem, but I can't receive theirs.  Is it because I don't have internet service on my blackberry?  But my friend who has an old Nokia phone with no internet capability receives texts from Iphone users, no problem??  Please help.
    Thanks!

Sounds like you are on the right track. But dealing with carriers is, well, frustrating at best. And inconsistent. If you get a CSR that says they can do nothing. Hang up and call back...until you get someone who can really help.
And maybe try different paths into support -- for instance, on the BIS login page for VZW, there is a number listed there that is different than any other of their support numbers. I had a problem with BIS once, called there and they got it fixed within 5 minutes. My account rep and other CSR's had been telling me that there was nothing they could do. So persistence wins out.
    Best.

  • Can't receive text msgs from other carriers

My carrier is Verizon, and I'm able to receive text msgs from other Verizon carriers. But my problem is that I can't receive text messages from other carriers, such as Tmobile. They can receive my text messages though. I have tried restarting, shutting down and reopening the phone. I've tried calling support, and I logged a ticket. Any idea what to do?

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
I would let Verizon follow up on the ticket you opened with them. Does the incoming text never show up at all? Were you ever a customer of another wireless company and either migrated to Verizon or bought out by Verizon (such as Alltel)? Were you able to get texts on your last phone or is this your first Verizon phone?
Let us know how the ticket goes,

  • LG G2 can't receive text from iPhone

LG G2 can't receive text msg from iPhone, any ideas?

        Dualregistered,
Yikes! I depend on text messages for my main communication. So I know how important it is to have them working. So with that being said, let's get to work. Did you just upgrade to the LG G2 from an iPhone? How long have you had this issue were you can't receive messages from iPhones? Also, are you able to send messages to these people that have iPhones and are they getting yours? Please keep me posted.

  • Can't receive texts after porting from AT&T

    Hello,
I was recently stationed in an area with no AT&T coverage which required me to port to Verizon. Ever since the port I can't receive texts except from Verizon about account changes and updates. I called the support line and the lady I spoke to reset something on her end and had me power cycle my phone after powering down my old phone. After that I am now able to get FB account updates via text as well as system texts from Verizon. I still cannot, however, receive texts from my wife, who is still with AT&T until she moves here. She has a Galaxy S4. I also can't receive texts from my salesperson who has a Verizon iPhone. I can text myself and that will go through pretty much instantly. I have tried this with iMessage turned on or off. My salesperson did say that iMessage had to be off or there could be issues. I didn't get that turned off before the port started, apparently, but I'm not sure if that's the real cause. AT&T customer service said to try waiting 24-hours and restarting to see if that helps. I'll try that and resetting the network settings. I need to be able to stay in contact with my wife as she's two states away.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • TS4268 I can't receive text on my IPad except for other apple users

I can't receive text on my IPad except from other apple users. My Iphone works fine, texting to Ipad, however I can't receive from others.

SMS/MMS is a voice cell technology and not natively supported on any device not a cellphone. Messaging through iMessage is the only method included with the iPad. There are third-party apps that support SMS messaging available the iTunes Store, though I don't know how well any of them work or if indeed any can support receving SMS messages or can only send.
    Regards.

  • Have a 5S w/ Sprint, can't receive texts from verizon non-iphones!

Ported a # as of 10/2 from Tmobile to the iphone 5s I received from Sprint.
Since then I can't receive texts from verizon non-iphones! They
can see my texts. Googling this, it seems like there's been issues
like this for other people. Can anyone advise as this is very bad!

SMS and MMS are carrier features. There is nothing you can do on your phone to fix this. It's either a problem with Sprint, Verizon, or T-Mobile. You've reported the problem to Sprint, that's all you can do. About the only other thing that could be done would be to have somone you know on Verizon who can't send messages to you open a ticket with Verizon.

  • Samsung Knack can't receive text

Can send and receive voice. Can send text but can't receive text (2 days' duration now). Tried *228 option 1 with no effect. Not real anxious to reset the phone, and I gather that's unlikely to work. Anything else I can try? Network problem maybe? Thanks for your help.

I'm here to help you get back up and running oldmanscanlon! Where are you located? Any others in the area having similar difficulties? Is this postpaid or prepay service? My first recommendation would be to remove and reinsert the battery.

  • TS4268 I CAN NOT RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES FROM PEOPLE USING IMESSAGE - I HAVE MY IMESSAGE TURNED OFF BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT TEXTS GOING TO ALL MY ACCOUNTS - HOW DO I RESOLVE THIS PLEASE HELP - MISSING SEVERAL IMPORTANT COMMUNICATIONS...

I CAN NOT RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES FROM PEOPLE USING IMESSAGE

On an iPhone your iMessages will go to your phone number.
You can select another email to use on iPod or iPad.
    Go to settings
    Messages
    Send and receive
Check your phone number and uncheck the common Apple ID you share so your messages will not go to other devices.
