3GS contacts sorted wrong

I have a 3GS and I don't know if this matters but it is running iOS 5.1.
A few months ago, I noticed that anytime I edited one of my contacts on my phone, they were sent to to top of my contact list completely out of order.  This has also happened with my music library.  When I buy a new song, it is put at the top of my library out of order.  I have no idea how to fix this.  So basically, my music and my contacts are completely our of order and it is driving me crazy!  Anyone know how to fix this?

I had the same problem with my contacts on my iPhone 4S using the latest iOS.  I have no idea what caused the issues but it was frustrating since using the alphabet quick jump wouldnt work if a new contact was on top with that letter.  It would jump to the top rather than where the rest of the contacts were.
I tried Roberts method and it did not work. Erasing and restoring from iCloud restores it to the exact same state.  You waste time doing this.  Do not do it.
What worked for me is this:
1) Sync your contacts to iCloud.
2) Go to Settings>iCloud
3) For the Contacts setting, change the radio button to "off"
4) A prompt will ask you "What would you like to do with the previously synced iCloud contacts on your iPhone?"  The options are "Keep on My iPhone," "Delete from My iPhone," or "Cancel"
5) Choose "Delete from My iPhone."
6) Check your contacts.  They should all be gone now.
7) Go back to the iCloud contacts setting and change the radio button to "on"
8) Check your contacts.  They should now all be in order now.
I believe this resets whatever was screwed up on the iPhone.  New contacts now are sorted correctly when made.

  • Outlook 2007 and iPhone 3GS contact sorting

I have done a search and found lots of good information on this topic, yet have not been able to find out if what I am wanting is possible. Probably my misunderstanding of some of the terminology, so I thought I would start my own thread.
I have Outlook 2007 on my Windows XP notebook and use it to sync my iPhone 3GS through iTunes 9.0. There are 425 contacts, both business and personal, on my phone and in Outlook and everything works beautifully. Yesterday I was asked for the name of a rep for a certain product we sell and I could not remember his name and really did not want to search through all my contacts to find his information. What I would like to do is to be able to seperate, or group, certain contacts within my Outlook and iPhone. For instance I would have "all contacts" and then maybe under that "factory reps", "bank reps" and so on. Is there a way for this to be done that does not put duplicate contacts on my phone and lets me have all my contacts listed, yet be able to go back and sort through them based on groups as well?
Thank you for any help regarding this and I apologize if this topic has been covered, once again I think I may be seeing the answer, just not understanding the terminology or setup.

    san someone help me? thanks

  • E66: Configuring contact sort order when composing...

    Dear friends,
This is probably a silly issue but still, I can't find a solution... I have upgraded my aging Nokia E66 RM-343 to 400.21.013 (this version was suggested by the Nokia Suite and it keeps telling me that this is the latest version). After the upgrade and restoring the phone settings, I am having problems with the contacts sort order when choosing recipients for an SMS message.
I have configured the contact list for the "Last Name First Name" display order, and when making a voice call, the sort order is correct - the contacts are sorted by the last name. However, when writing an SMS message and choosing the recipients, the contact list is displayed in the "Last Name, First Name" mode but it is sorted by the first name which is extremely confusing and inconvenient.
I just do not seem to be able to find where the sort order for the contact list as displayed when composing an SMS message can be configured. Anyone have any suggestion/hint? Thank you very much in forward!
    Best regards,
    Peter

Unfortunately, the 6230i seems to have only one field for the contact name, so it has no way of knowing what is what. I guess the only thing you can do is reinput all the names manually.

okay. when i connected my iphone 5 to itunes it replaced all of the data from my old iphone 3gs (contacts, apps, notes, bookmarks, photos, music, everything you can possibly think of) with my new iphone 5's data. I am so frustrated with this. Why? and it did it by itself, i didnt touch anything, or clicked anything. please help me this is urgent! I am a businessman and need my contacts.

You're iPhone was probably set to automatically sync with your iTunes upon plugging it in. Best option is to restore from a backup, either on iCloud or your computer.

  • Contact Sorting 6.22.81.105

This may have always been present in Skype, but I noticed the sorting by contact should use a different set of sorting parameters used when "Hide offline contact" is enabled. It looks like it just sorts by online -> offline then alphabetically even if you don't show the offline contacts which makes it kind of worthless in that particular case.
Basically, my contact list should look like the following if "Hide Contacts who are offline" is enabled and "sort by contact status" is enabled :
    [Online, green] User A
    [Online, green] User B
    [Online, green] User G
    [Away, yellow] User C
    [Away, yellow] User E
    [DND, red] User D
    [DND, red] User F
Alternatively, the default implementation is the following:
    [Online, green] User A
    [Online, green] User B
    [Away, yellow] User C
    [DND, red] User D
    [Away, yellow] User E
    [DND, red] User F
    [Online, green] User G
Is this something that has been considered already? Thanks for you time.

This is how it should work but it is not!
Clearly a bug in the sorting code.
The feature "is there" in the menu (Contacts - Sort Contacts - Sort by Online Status) but it does not do what it says on the tin.
Amazing that people do not care or do not see this.

  • Contacts Sort Order

I have recently moved from a Windows Mobile 6.5 device to the iPhone 4 and am struggling with getting my contacts to work properly. (I am having the same issue on my iPad, so I assume it is an iOS issue that I don't fully understand).
On my computer, my contacts are all entered properly in the proper fields of First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Suffix and so forth. In Outlook and Google Contacts, they all sort properly by Last Name, First Name.
When I sync across to the iPhone, they sort Last Name, First Name UNLESS there is an entry in the Suffix field, in which case it sorts Suffix, First Name!!!
I thought I was missing a bunch of contacts. For Example, all of my P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) contacts were filed under "P" on the handset instead of their last names.
How do I fix this? Short of deleting all of the Suffix fields, I can't seem to figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike:
Have you solved this problem? Mine is almost exactly the same.
I have a new iPhone 4. Using iTunes, I imported my Outlook Express contacts to the phone. Separately, I imported my Outlook Express contacts to Gmail.
Then I decided to utilize the Microsoft Exchange feature on the iphone to automatically sync my Gmail contacts to the phone.
It seems to have all worked correctly EXCEPT for the sorting function.
More specifically, the sorting function seems to work, but the contact first, middle and last names and suffix fields have been rearranged.
As a result, the sorting is wrong.
As you stated, my Gmail contacts all appear correct.
The problem started with the Microsoft Exchange feature. Previously, when my contacts were imported using iTunes, all the contact name fields were correct.
    Do you have any suggestions?

  • Iphone 3GS update went wrong - plugging in via USB causes instant PC crash

I have (had) an iPhone 3GS, working well. I decided it was time to do a sync, and an update was suggested. A back up seems to have been created from the sync (visible in itunes), however there were messages afterwards that my PC had recovered from a serious error. The update became a restore and update, and I was given the choice to restore to my backup. This process appeared to go well enough, though at the end my PC kept crashing and trying to reboot but as long as my iPhone was connected via USB the PC could not reboot.
Furthermore, a whole stack of info from my iPhone (all texts, all notes, around 600 out of 800 photos, settings, apps etc) has disappeared.
Now every time I try to connect my iPhone to my PC it instantly crashes. Other things (eg headphones) still work in the same USB ports (I've tried multiple, front & back).
I can see an itunes backup was created, but cannot connect to itunes on my PC to ascertain if there is any more data from the back up (namely my notes & photos). Any suggestions from similar experiences would be most welcome!

    Success.
After a bit of a dig around google searches, it seems there's some sort of glitch between Apple and Logitech webcam device drivers.
I removed the Logitech drivers, and voila! iPhone no longer causes instant meltdown of pc.
My question now then, how do I work out if my incomplete restore can be turned into a complete restore? I was game enough to hit the restore button in itunes and it only gave me the option of returning to original settings, thus erasing what is currently on there. I cancelled that move!
I would like what I have (all contacts, at least!) plus the disappeared old stuff (pics, notes, texts would be nice)...
Am i right in understanding that iTunes will only keep one backup and any subsequent ones will replace the previous one? I'm nervous that if I backup what i have there now, it will replace a good backup that I really might be able to restore in full.
    Any thoughts on this?

  • IPhone 3GS contacts to Address book

Excuse the stupid question, but I've searched and searched without finding a response to my question, though I'm sure there is, I just can't seem to find it anywhere !
All I'm trying to do is Sync my contacts from my iPhone (3Gs - iOS4) to my new MacBook Pro Address Book - how do I go about doing this? It seems like something should of popped up and asked me to merge them, but it didn't..
Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Is your new MacBook Pro the Mac that's controlling your iPhone? If not, that's the first thing you need to fix. Then plug in your iPhone to the Mac, launch iTunes if it doesn't already launch, select your iPhone under "Devices" on the left, then click on the "Info" tab. That's where you'll find sync settings for Address Book.

  • Contacts - Sorting by last name

I've read that Android 2.2 allows you to sort your contacts by last name, but I can't seem to find a way to do this on the Droid 2.  It seems that the feature has been disabled either by Motorola or Verizon.  Does anyone know of any plans to restore this functionality?  Sorting by last name seems so natural -- it's a mystery why anyone would consciously remove it.

    On the Nexus One it's
Open contacts --> Menu button --> View contact names as
I am unsure as I do not have a Droid 2 on hand, but am considering purchasing one sometime in the near future.  Of course above will vary between manufacturers since Some devices will have custom UI's built on top of Android.

  • Contact sort by Last Name

I  know this question has been asked before, but it's been a while, and I'm hoping someone has come  up with a solution.
My gmail contacts are sorted Last name, First name, but my contacts are sorted by first name.  While this is extremely frustrating, to make matters worse, my car uses the list, lust it is sorted by first name.
Please, please, please tell me there is a way to sort the contact list by Last name.

Not quite sure that answers the OP question though!   One solution is to download a free replacement dialer from the market, such as Dialer One, which allows the sorting of all contacts by Last Name, First Name

  • Contact sorting and nicknames

I am one of those people who has a well organized Address Book so if need be I can print out nice formal address slips or when needed I have all my friends listed by their nicknames.
Am I not finding the right settings page or isn't it possible at all to organize people by nicknames on the iPhone? I have a lot of business contacts for whom I don't mind having last and first name, but I'd still want my best friend to display by his nickname.

    hi..jain...
    ROLE MERGING
If you want to assign two roles to a user but dont want them to appear as two roles,
you can use the concept of Merging of Roles.
Here, one can allow the user to see only that role in the top level navigation, whose
priority has been set as low.Although the contents of the other role are visible too,
but only n the second level navigation, with the contents of the higher priority role.
This is done by setting the merge-id of the two roles as one string(e.g. merge), and
then setting the merge-priority of the role you want to be visible in Top level navigation
as 99,while setting the other role's priority as 100.
This ensures that only one of the two (or many roles are visible).
    SORTING is...
You can define the display sequence of the nodes comprising the various levels of the navigation hierarchy by prioritizing the items on a per level basis.
You define priorities by assigning a value between 0 and 100 to each item. Values may include decimal numbers.
The smaller the value of the navigation node, the further left it displays on the navigation bar, or the higher up it displays in detailed navigation. The item with the lowest value appears to the far left or the top, respectively, and the others follow in the order of their priorities.

  • Most Iphone 3GS contacts on phone are duplicated, can't delete contacts to

Most of the contacts on my 3GS are duplicates. I am not using MobileMe. I sync with Outlook. My Outlook contacts are not duplicated.
I tried "replace all contacts on this iPHone with PC contacts" in itunes, but that didn't fix it.
I tried syncing with sync contacts unchecked, but that didn't remove the contacts from the iPHone.
People in other posts have talked about going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar and selecting an Account and tellint it to delete contacts, but none of my accounts have that option (i only have 2 mail accounts showing).
I don't mind deleting all contacts on the phone, as I can replace them from my Outlook contacts, which are up to date and not in duplicate.
I think this may have happened because I have 2 groups of contacts in Outlook, which are mostly duplicates of each other (one for me and one for my husband). But I only selected my group to sync, and my group is not duplicated.
    Can anyone help me please?
    Thank you.

Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes. This will be under the edit menu.
    Then, reset your sync history:
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    3. Click the Devices tab.
    4. Click the Reset Sync History button.
    Next, connect your phone:
    1. Select the device in iTunes and click the Info tab.
    3. Select the group you want on your phone.
    2. Scroll down to the Advanced section and under "Replace information on this iPhone/iPod" make sure Contacts are selected.
    3. Click Apply.
    See it that fixes things.

  • Other apps don't respect Contact Sort and Display order

I just noticed this on my iPhone 4 and am wondering if anyone else has seen that the Map and Mail apps do not respect the 'Sort Order' and Display Order' settings that are chosen in 'Settings'.
I'm referring to when you get access to your contacts list when inside these apps (when you are composing a new email in Mail and use the '+' icon in the 'To:' & also when in Maps when using the 'contacts icon' to load an address in the 'Search' or 'Direction' fields.
On my iPhone 4 these two apps have the Sort and Display order apparently hardwired in that they don't change the ordering when it is changed in 'Settings'. It used to be that the contact list would always update everywhere to respect the odering chosen in 'Settings'. I thought that this must be an OS issue but for some strange reason on my old iPhone 3G that also has iOS 4 on it, I don't see this seemingly incorrect behavior....so at least in my case it is hardware specific.

    1. I have a simlar problem with my new iPhone.
    2. Settings configured to be "Last, First" (both sort&display).
2a. The Contacts app does not following this setting, but...
2b. The Phone app contact list correctly follows the setting.
    3. In Settings app, configured to be "First, Last" (both sort& display).
3a. The Contacts app follows this setting
3b. The Phone app contact list follows this setting.
    4. Could be that the Contacts app does not depend on the Settings (hard-coded?).
