3gs io6.0.1 update knackered carriers...
3gs since updating to ios 6.0.1 no service ..searching and alternating between the 2 ..when a simcard is in......... no problems with phone only since io6 base band updates..apple plz help other wise phone is great..too many complaining after update to 6....my phone was brilliant wont change it never a fault on it since i got it ....io6.0.1 update cant recieve or make calls on it...wifi sound media brilliant anything to do with carriers or sim just get searching/no service alternates between the 2.....never finds any....help me plz....
ok very simply not unlocked.....workin g fine np at all.....io6.0.1 updates last week carrier signal "" searching..no service "" never made a call or recieved a call since ...apple have destroyed a perfectly good phone.....id rather have this one than ay other this has been ultra reliable..from new...just send me the instructions to change the baseband back to 12 onths ago or so.......aplle shold stop fiddling .......or replace them.

Error 23, 28, 29: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Also attempt to restore while connected with the white USB Dock Connector cable that shipped with your device, on a known good computer and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value, (00 499901 064000 0), can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software can also cause these errors.

Basic troubleshooting steps right out of the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. If you've been through ALL the steps and you still have the problem, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

ITunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone
When I try to download and install the new carrier settings file, I get the message "iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." (I got a similar message when I tried to download and install the OS update.)
I've been able to work around the problem by creating a different user and installing from there. But I'd like to be able to find and correct the cause of the error message instead of using a workaround. It seems like there's a file or folder somewhere that has somehow become read-only. Right after I posted the message I thought that the age-old placebo of repairing permissions might actually fix my problem. Because of your quick reply I found the ownership problem before repairing permissions. So here was the perfect chance for a test. Repair Permissions ran successfully but the owner of ~/Library/iTunes was still root. Repair Permissions fails the test.
I manually changed the owner to steve and was able to download and install the carrier settings.

I have the Iphone 3gs and it said update required and i needed to connect to itunes so i did al that and now everytime i go to restore everything it just says error and then i have to do it again?whats wrong with it?
Are you getting an error message number with your error message? If so, what number are you getting?

I have Iphone 4 it was work fine in my country (bahrain) i went to UK and i change sim card to O2 and when i came back it doesn't work in my country i think because i update the carrier in Uk its my carrier now 10.0 and the others in my country is 9.0
We had the same problem, but figure out the solution.
You MUST have at least 1 song added to your ITUNE! After you add a free song, then everything else should work as normal!

Only the carrier can authorise unlocking. You need to contact them.

I just updated to Iphone 3.0 and now I see that there is an update for Carrier Settings? should I do it? Im on the Fidos/Rogers network...
I deleted the backup file and I've been watching the backup process create new files in the backup folder on my HD. The precess ran smoothly until 90% of the progress bar was full. It took about 15 minutes to get to 90%, but even though the backup folder continues to show new items are being added its been about 30 minutes without any visible movement of the progress bar in iTunes (8.2). I'll let it keep running to see if the download process completes and post the results. I now have almost 6500 items in my backup folder which represents about 500 MB.
Hoping that once I get through one download successfully that future downloads will be less painful.

i was updating my iphone 3gs to the new updates - the system said it couldn't finish the download - three hours later. now the phone is unresponsive. help
Nothing happened, i managed to get my computer to recognise it and now restoring... but it says 3 hours remaining?! Will i lose everything?

I am having the same problem.
Bought iPhone 3G on Vodafone AU.
Paid Voda to unlock it.
When I plug in to itunes I get a 'your carrier settings can now be updated would you like to proceed' sort of message. The first time I connect it then says 'Carrier Settings Updated' Yet i get no signal.
NEXT TIME I sync, it tries again, and then i get the same error as listed in this post.
I've tried this on TWO PC's (in every port!) and on a MacBook Pro (both USB ports).
I initially thought maybe Vodafone were just being slack in unlocking the phone, but have since found out that APPLE do the unlocking at their end and have basically put my IMEI number on their 'white list', so every time I sync it checks with Apple and lets me have a different version of software that unlocks the phone.
It's very frustrating, because the restore process takes about 15 mins, so I keep just trying random different things, but no one has any firm instructions.
Can I please confirm this is what I am meant to be doing.
1. Swap SIM to NEW sim.
2. Plug in to iTunes.
3. Carrier settings will then update.
4. RESTORE iPhone 3G.
5. SHOULD BE ALL OK... but after restore it will say 'please insert a compatible SIM that is unlocked. (ie, put the vodafone SIM back in!)
Am I missing something obvious? or is this an Apple issue. -
My Ipnoe 3gs said it had updates when connected to my laptop, so Ihave let it back up then clicked update. It would not update and said it had an unknown error. Now it is trying to restore but it has been plugged in restoring for over an hour and nothing seems to be happening. Can anyone help?? Please,
Try putting it in recovery mode:

If you can't put it in to recovery mode, try using DFU mode (which is basically recovery mode with iPhones having more serious issues):

If it does go in to recovery mode but you are still having this issue when restoring it, try it on a different computer.
It is good that you let it back up. After it restores to factory settings, you can then use itunes to restore it from the backup and get your goodies back:
