3gs ios 5 activation issues

Hello,
I have a 3gs running IOS 5 on AT&T. I recently resotred the phone to factory defaults and I'm going through the IOS 5 setup. Activation fails as the phone is not recognizing the sim card.
I have been unable activate via itunes or over the air.
Any suggestions?

I had the exact same problem. Phone worked perfectly fine on previous firmware. Carried out the update and couldn't get passed activation screen due to it not recognizing my sim card. I tried a number of times but had no luck.
I logged into Apple support and went through the fault and ended up being rung by one of their team. They advised me to again, carry out the update and to try it all again. Nothing. Exact same results. Gave them a call back and spoke to somebody else after giving them my reference number, and was told the fault obviously lay at their end.
They then informed me that my phone still had 72 days of harware warranty on it (even though its a 2nd hand phone) and told me that a repair would be free.
AWAY IT WENT!!!!!
BUT......................
Today I receive an email to say that it will not be repaired as the repair it requires would cost more than the value of the phone! ***? Surely if the phone worked perfectly on previous firmware and fails on update then it is their issue. Nobody at any point during my conversations or emails with Apple staff had told me that this would be a possible outcome. I was told it would be repaired or replaced. My advice, get in touch with them directly. I've now seen hundreds of people having this issue and Apple obviously know about it but will most likely deny any knowledge of any faults.
I will be calling them tomorrow to take it further (with all my manors in place and a cool head) but if I dont get any real answers or results I feel a call to Watchdog or such agencies may be needed. I'll try and inform you of my progress.

Not a good sign. Try forcing the phone into recovery mode & restoring it. If this fails, make an appointment at an Apple store:

What can I do to fix this besides bring it to the store? it also bugs me because this answer was supposed to work but it just messed my phone up even more. Odds are your phone was hacked to illegally unlock it.

Hi, I am new to this forum so please excuse anything I may say that sounds a bit stupid but I am not very technically minded.
I have got an iPhone 3gs ios version 4.1. The phone was locked to Vodafone and I asked them to unlock it which they did. I connected the phone to iTunes and it said congratulations your phone is now unlocked. My new Tesco sim card was accepted and the phone works fine. I have tried to download some apps but they all seem to need a higher version of the ios. iTunes says there is an update for my phone ios version 6. I need to know if I update my phone to this version will my phone still be unlocked and also will the phone continue to work properley. Hope someone can help.

IPhone 3GS (iOS 5) will not sync, stuck on *backing up* in iTunes 10.6.3.25

I recently updated iTunes to the latest update for Windows, since then, whenever I connect my phone and try to sync it just gets stuck in *backing up* for ages.. if I leave it it will be in backing up for hours. I cannot sync my phone or add any content now. I've been told to try and click the *X* in the progress window at the top of iTunes - but doing this does nothing but freeze iTunes for a few minutes - then it continues to *back up*... frustrating. Can anyone help?

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if the problem has been resolved.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved. If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.

Please can someone assist me on what to do on the following;
After update of my iphone 3GS ios. I found out that my iphone has returned back to factory setting and it shows No Service on the top left corner of my iphone screen. It equally shows on the screen that I have to set up the iphone before using it again. I followed the on screen display then get connected to a WiFi, but the response I was getting is that the Set up Server cannot be contacted please try again latter. I chose the option of using itune through my Laptop. The response I was getting here is that my iphone cannot be connected the itune store because my iphone was not found.
I am regretting why I updated the ios. Please, can someone advise me on what to do please.

It sounds like there’s an issue with Settings, the Notes app entry isn’t showing up as expected. Take a look at the article linked below and try restarting your iPhone 3GS.

Your suggestion worked perfectly. I can't believe there is nothing in any of the instructions I have seen online at the Yahoo and Apple help sites about the making sure the right default account is checked. I don't think I was even aware there was a "default account" setting. Thank you so much.

ICloud Activation Issue & Fixed Solution

Hi to All,
The function of iCloud activation that keep our devices in safe and protected from other who seeking to get our privacy is fantastic and work perfect.
However, Apple has provided a service to check if the iPhone has been enable for iCloud activation or not https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/ before we buy s second hand or used iPhone so we will be able to use iPhone and update it with new ios without issues.
but the issue for below points need to be fixed :
1- If users bought iPhone from third party shop and he does not know the previous owner. so No Way to get the last owner as the owner can be from different country or died or even lost his password and email who knows?
2- If the user his email of iCloud get hacked and hacker change the password of his email so some users will create new email and forgot to change their email on all websites account such as apple store and iCloud. Including if the email has stop working as happened to maketoob.com
People are not aware of Technology and Security so they do not understand how to deal with iPhone in professional way so Apple need to keep that in their mind and comedown and provide a quick solution for them or they will use spam website that act that they work with apple to remove iCloud officially and they are not. Or they People will try to Jailbreak their iPhone and use tools that bypass the iCloud IP server. That when happen, it will lead to have issue with sim lock and then they go back to their carrier to fix their iPhone.
I need apple to understand the situation that their customers face. I do not come here with issue only....
The solution :-
1- In this world apple has a contract with Telecom companies .
2- New Paid Service to remove the activation of iCloud.
3- Telecom carrier will be the guarantee for user who request the service as he is resident in that country.
4- Exclude Black list iPhone.
5- Exclude iPhone that has been in lost mode.
So, this will stop spam website to steal the money from apple customers and stop using tools from Jailbreak that cause issue with hardware.

i have lost my phone and erased my phone; now i've found it.
when i connect it to itunes, itunes asks me to enter the pin code but the phone is locked. i cant do anything...when i put a wifi connection, there's a connection attempt but then have this message :
your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. try connecting your phone to itunes to activate it or try againin a couple of minutes.
i've been trying many times!!!!
so i'm blocked through itunes and through wifi for icloud.
