3GS iOS4 update failed. ?!

The symptom of my phone is really similar to that of 3G users.
I don't know what happened but the update just failed.
I tried to restart everything and I also tried to do it on another computer. But nothing worked.
I'll go to a Apple Store tomorrow and see what happens.
But I'm afraid I'm going to lose all my pictures and videos. What do you guys think?

Itunes will make a backup before upgrading. I thought I had lost everything but not true. It's in Itunes. My problem with the upgrade was that the newbie Apple techs were not giving me correct information on the specific problem I was having which was being stuck in the restore loop. Windows had been downloading the drivers but the techies were not having me install them, duh? After talking to a senior tech advisor, she knew immediately what the problem was and we finally fixed the problem after not having phone service since Monday when I first attempted at the upgrade.

  • Ios4 update failed on 3gs and now phone dont work at all

so i updated as per apple instructions and update failed no code given and my iphone 3gs is now dead as in blank wiped clean but a black screen with white apple cant even pwer off and not recognized as connected to computer to restore or try updating again. this is my only phone so apple cant call me back for support
anyone else had this happen and fixed it?

Ok this is wat happened to my iPhone 3GS after I opted to upgrade to iOS4.0:
After the upgrade file finished downloading, the installation process got initiated. However, after a few minutes, the process crashed throwing up an Error 1602. My phone just displayed the connect to itunes logo. I did a hard reset (by pushing the home button & the power on/off button simultaneously) and the phone entered the recovery mode (or DFU or watever it is called). I reopened itunes and connected the iphone again. This time, I was told that the phone has been detected on recovery mode. I clicked RESTORE & it told me that the phone would be restored to factory settings, which I chose. The recovery process started and after a coupla minutes, I got another error. This time it was Error 1601.
After spending a good 2 hrs researching the internet, I found the solution that did work for me. Here goes...U would need another computer for this (not the one u have been using to sync ur iphone with):
    1) Install itunes 9.2 on another computer.
    2) Connect ur iphone (while it displays the connect to itunes logo).
    3) itunes will detect an iphone on recovery mode.
    4) Click Restore. itunes will tell u that ur phone can be restored to factory settings. Choose OK.
    5) itunes will automatically download iOS 4.0
    6) once the download is complete, installation of iOS 4 should start immediately. if for some weird reason it doesnt initiate, press shift+restore and select the installation file (it is located in C:\Documenst & Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\itunes\iphone software updates\xxxxx.ipsw )
    7) Once u've selected this file, installation will start & ull get a progress bar on ur iphone as well.
    8) The installation should come around fine & after a coupla automatic reboots, ur iPhone should now be up & running with iOS 4.0
    9) Itunes will ask you to name ur iphone. at this point, eject the iphone from the computer & connect it to the other computer (the one which u previously used to sync the iphone with). open itunes & ull get 2 options: Create a new iphone or restore backup from "Sandy's iPhone" ur iphone's name. Choose the 2nd option & watch ur iphone being restored with all ur backup.\
    10) once the sync is complete, eject & enjoy iOS 4
    Phew
    Cheers!!!

  • IPhone 3Gs - iOS4 update problem, iTunes crashed, iPhone wont update

    Hello!
Yesterday, I finally decided to upgrade my iPhone 3Gs to iOS 4 from 3.1.2 after having returned to my relatives house in europe. However, during the update, I got an error from iTunes (I can't remember what it was, it had a red circle with a white X and say something "unknown" had happened) and iTunes crashed. Then when I tried to update again, iTunes told me that the iPhone was in Recovery mode and had to be restored then updated.
Well, I was pretty mad about this because iPhoto failed to copy some of my videos and photos that I did not want to loose, but I went on with it. Almost immediately, the message "Restoring iPhone Software" came up and the iPhone screen changed and the status bar on my Mac Book went to what looks like 95%. On the iPhone it looks as though its around 60%.
It had been like this for four hours, and I decided to call Apple support through skype since I am not at home in the USA, they told me that it can take up to or even more than 10 (ten!!!!) hours for it to restore!
So I left it on over night, its now been 15 hours and the iPhone is still at 60% and on my Mac Book Pro I still get the message "Restoring iPhone Software" and its still at 95%.
I have a 12 hour flight to the US in a few days, and I would like to know if there is a way to fix this. The phone was running 3.1.2 before I decided to upgrade.

I managed to fix this by connecting the iPhone to another computer, this time a PC using Windows 7 (because the only mac I have is my MacBook Pro late 2009 edition), and the iPhone restore and update worked in less then 5 min.
Also, it looks like the apple rep was mis-informed as the backup DID SAVE my photos and videos!

  • IPhone 3GS iOS4 update - display keyboard orientation problem

I just upgraded my iphone 3GS with the new OS4. I notice a major change on how my iphone works but something's wrong with the keyboard display orientation. whenever i start typing something while the keyboard is displayed and try to change the orientation from portrait to landscape or vice-versa, the keyboard's spacebar is missing or sometimes some keys are missing. Can someone help remedy this...

  • 3GS - new update failed.

    Hi.
My iPhone 3GS went to update to the new Software 4.0 - As it was updating to the new software, I pulled the cord out and it un-synced.
Now my iPhone shows only the apple icon, and won't shut down, restart, or anything. I tried syncing it back up to my laptop, and it refuses. It looks as if it just won't read it.
Then the battery ran out, so I'm charging it at the moment. But it still won't let me view anything.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and what I should do about it - Aka, is there a way I'm able to fix it, or would I need to go into a store.
    Thank you.

  • IOS4 update failed on 3G - no progress while backup

    Morning.
I can not update my 3G. Shortly after the installation procedure has started the backup procedure has begun. But I can wait up to an hour without any progress. The progress bar remains empty. Only a very short part of the blue progress bar appears, appr. one millimeter.
What's wrong? What can I do?
Normal sync procedure seems to work normally includng backup procedure.
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

My iOs 4 update on my 4G hung on backing up the software -- for more than six hours. The following solution worked for me ...
(more fully described an illustrated at http://slapphappe.wordpress.com/2010/06/21/ios-4-upgrade-hangs-on-backing-up-iph one/)
    1. Be connected to the internet (so it can download the iOS 4 update).
    2. Connect your iPhone to your Mac via USB.
    3. Sync your iPhone (so you can restore to it later).
    4. iTunes>Preferences>General enable “Check for new software updates automatically” (to download the update as part of a restore).
    iTunes>Devices>~’s iPhone …
    5. Hit the Restore button — and heed the warning “all of your media and other data will be erased” but “the newest version of the iPhone software will be installed”, fortunately you will restore your data from the Sync you just took (worked well for me). Hit the Restore and Update button to continue.
    6. Wait about 20 minutes while it steps through “Restoring iPhone software”, “Verifying iPhone software” and “Restoring iPhone firmware” until it pops us with “Your iPhone has been restored …” and then restarts your iPhone.
    7. When you iPhone is restated and once again appears in iTunes>Devices …
Click on “Restore from the backup of ~’s iPhone (the Sync you took earlier) and Continue. Wait out however long it takes to restore your apps, music, movies, photos, contacts, calendar etc. (my iPhone had over 14Gb used and it took over an hour to restore it all). Thereafter the iPhone will again restart and again show up in your iTunes>Devices. Note that your software version is now 4.0!

  • IOS4 Update on 3GS New Restore- "iPhone (Name) is in use by another user"

The initial problem I encountered on my 3GS to iOS4 update was I couldn't do ANYTHING that required the network, e.g. Facebook, Safari, certain apps, youtube and more. I was told by an Apple in-store rep to restore AS NEW IPHONE instead of using my backup info, so I did.
It works almost perfectly now. However, I just attempted to make a new playlist and sync it to my iPhone and I am getting the message "iphone (Name of my iPhone) is in use by another user on this computer"
The problem with this is that I am the ONLY user on this computer and have been since I have had it.
My photos will sync through iPhoto but iTunes is no longer recognizing my iPhone's name or the device. I am not sure what caused this, but any help would be awesome.
Since the new update I changed the name of my iphone but I do not see why that would be an issue.

    1. You are thread-jacking. Kangdequan has an open question and adding unrelated questions to that, will not help him at all. Kangdequan, please see below.
    2. There have been countless articles in the last few years explaining why some countries have iTunes music stores and others not. The main reason is something called copyright.
    3. There is an Apple app store in the Philippines.
    4. There are many other sources of music.
Kandequan. It may be that something has become corrupted, but I also see a problem in that the iPhone is only supposed to sync with one computer. Trying to sync with a second one will not work.
There are a number of things you may need to do now, but first decide which computer is to be the one that you sync with: the master, if you will.
Whichever one you decide on, you need to make sure that all files point to that and there is a process written up by a user "wjosten".
You may also need to follow the Apple suggestions for making iTunes recognise your device.

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>
    About=>Carrier?

  • IPhone 3GS iOS 6.1.2 Update Fail

Following my original post this evening at https://discussions.apple.com/message/21290768#21290768
    I have new issue now.
Hoping iOS 6.1.2 update would solve the original issue I plugged my phone into iTunes to update, but the update failed.
I received an error code -1 which I understand to be a hardware issue after searching online. I have tried to resolve the problem by starting the phone both in DFU and recovery mode to update, neither of which worked.
My phone is stuck with the iTunes logo and usb cable screen which tells me to plug it into iTunes. I can't restart the phone to get back to what small functionally I has before attempting to update to iOS 6.1.2.
MY PHONE WAS PERFECTLY FINE BEFORE iOS 6.1 WAS INSTALLED, NOW I HAVE NO CAPABILITY TO USE IT AS AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE AT ALL!

I have the same type of problem. I clicked to upgrade to 6.1.2, it downloaded the program, it extracted the software, then gave the message that it was verifying the iPhone restore with Apple, then failed. The message is that "The iPhone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable."
Looking at the logs, there is a lot of activity with the update server, but at the very end it makes a 'personalized bundle' for the upgrade, then a particular server can't be reached to authenticate it and quits the process. Quel drag.

Not a good sign. Try forcing the phone into recovery mode & restoring it. If this fails, make an appointment at an Apple store:
Turn your phone off. Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

How to recover photos from photo in Iphone 3GS after updating to the IOS 6.0.1?

Same problem here, and it's not isolated.

I believe you will find you can again sync Photos if you delete the "iPod Photo Cache", but predict that any subsequent attempt will fail.  In my case, the enxt sync removes all the photos again - I've seen other reports of error messages upon sync.  Mine just fails silently. :-)

  • Slow and unresponsive after iOS4 update

While the new features are nice, the slow down is not.
My 3G now seems slow and unresponsive in all Apps and generally.
Not very happy with that to be honest, don't see why it should be slower.

I have had the same problem with my iPhone using the iOS4 update. I reset my iPhone and it was still slow. I also fully turned it off and waited a whole day and turned it on (resulted in a minor improvement to speed). I can't use multi tasking etc because I don't have the 3GS phone. I also had an issue where I couldn't open up iTunes!! I pressed the icon, and the phone froze in the iTunes screen without displaying any albums etc..... then it returned to the home screen. I repeated the process 3 times with the same result. It did eventually open up on the 4th time and played a song. I am not very impressed with the performance of my iPhone after the software update and will give it another week or so to see if Apple release any "fixes" after that I'm going to revert back to the old software.
