3gs- itunes is forcing a restore??

I updated software to 4.1 today. While updating, itunes froze up and so did my phone. I had to do a hard shutdown on my phone in order for it to turn off. When I turned it back on it told me to connect to itunes. When in itunes, it is not recognizing my phone and tells me to restore to facotry settings. I have not backed up my pictures in a while so I really don't want to restore. Is there a way around this??

No. You will have to restore your phone, either from your most recent backup or as a new device. If the pics in question are included in the backup you use to restore your phone, they will be restored to your phone. If the pics in question are not part of that backup, they are gone. The first thing done when updating software is an iPhone backup, so the pics in question should be part of the backup now stored on your computer.

  • Corrupt iPhone 3GS. iTunes recognises, but can't restore it.

    Greetings all,
im posting on behalf of my father because his 3GS has just failed.
Apparently, he was about to make a call when it froze or turned off or something. Then, when he went to turn it back on, it showed the activation 'connect to itunes' thing.
Connecting it to iTunes showed no joy as it said it needed to wipe and restore it. Downloading the 3.1.2 update again (new computer, iPhone already on 3.1.2)
the installation started but then failed with error 23.
I also have an iPhone 1g that I've jailbroken etc and know my way around that. The 3GS however is not jailbroken and is exactly as supplied from the mobile carrier.
Has anyone come across this before? Any help would be great.

Unfortunately, the only way to get the iPhone working again from the "Connect to iTunes" screen is to restore it, consequently wiping it in the process. However, if you have your iPhone backed-up and all of your iTunes content resides on the computer, it will be synced back to your iPhone after the restore is completed. If your father has ever synced his iPhone with the new computer, you can restore it from the iPhone back up created when it was last synced. If it has not been synced with the new computer, and you still have the old computer, use the old computer to restore the iPhone.
Since iTunes cannot restore it, you must force the iPhone into recovery mode and restore it from there. To do this, turn the iPhone off, and hold down the home button. Keeping it held, attach the iPhone to the computer via the USB cable. Keep the home button held until the "Connect to iTunes" screen appears. iTunes should then recognize the iPhone in recovery mode and you can restore it from there.

  • TS1814 I have an iPhone 3GS and was trying to restore it. Now it won't let me activate my phone and my itunes tells me I have no SIM card inserted when I do. Any ideas on how to get it working again?? I'm dying without it!

Any ideas on how to get it working again?

This means that the phone was previously hacked to carrier unlock (unauthorized unlock), and when you restored, the hack was removed and it became re-locked to its original carrier.  It will now accept a SIM card only from that carrier.
Your only option is to contact the carrier it's locked to and enquire if they will provide authorized unlocking.  Not all carriers will unlock and those that do usually have requirements and qualifications - i.e. you have to be a current or former customer in good standing.

  • My iphone 3gs says I need to restore my phone with itunes.  when i connect the phone it says i need to unlock the phone which i cannont due because of the caution saying i need to restore.  does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem

My iphone 3gs says I need to restore my phone with itunes.  when i connect the phone it says i need to unlock the phone which i cannont due because of the caution on the phone.  How do i fix this?

Hold down the power button and home button at the same time until the phone powers on, shuts back off, powers on again and continue to hold it until it shows the itunes logo to plug in to itunes. This should allow you to restore without unlocking it.

I backed up my 3GS using iTunes. I then restored the file to my new 4GS. Then I synced the apps onto the 4GS. Then I downloaded 2 custom ringtones, and attempted to sync them onto the 4GS, but it says "This Library is already synced with another phone, and if you try to sync, you will lose all of the information on the iPhone." I am a Windows user. This Sync process is VERY confusing.

How can I possibly get these two new ringtones onto the iPhone without wiping out everything else on the phone? This Sync process is nuts.
I have Backed Up the phone twice. Why would iTunes try to wipe out the phone?

  • ITunes forcing iPod restore that doesn't work...

Ever since I upgraded to the new iTunes, when I plug in my iPod nano, iTunes give a message that "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes". So I restore it, and it restarts and the whole thing starts again! With the exact message and the exact same process.
I've tried Apple's 5-step process, but that doesn't work, so now I'm stuck with an empty iPod that doesn't load.
    Any ideas???

IT's the new version of I tunes. Theres something screwy with 7.6 I got the new 80 gig Ipod classic with video. I updated I tunes, and then uploaded my music. Everything was fine until i updated my ipod with more music that i had. A few hours later I was listening to music when all of a sudden it stopped playing. I looked and My I pod had frozen. So I did a reset and then it came up to the thing were it says it needs to be restored. I've done that like twenty times and it still says the same **** thing...
A piece of advice... don't listen to anyone who tells you to change the drive letter (it tells you how to on this site as well) it doesn't work.
Do try to restore on a friends Itunes that is prior to 7.6. I hear that really works.

  • After being forced to restore my 5th gen iPod touch it keeps telling me that it's failed to restore, any suggestions, please?

The past couple of times I've plugged my iPod into iTunes it has said it's failed to sync it to my iTunes and hasn't allowed me to put music onto my iPod so I plugged it in today and it told me I needed to restore my iPod to be able to sync my music, photos, etc, onto my iPod and wasn't letting me do anything else with my iPod on iTunes, so, I was forced to restore it if I wanted to actually put more music on to my iPod. Restoring is not a great issue with myself because I always make sure to have folders saved on my laptop with back ups of photos and music, but, when I did restore it and it finished it popped up with this message:
So, I clicked okay and it told me for the recovery of my iPod I had to restore it again. I restored it. Again. It came up with this message. Again.
Can someone please help me? I will be very grateful!
I updated my iTunes about a week ago, I'm not sure if that could have anything to do with it?
    Thank you,

  • My iphone4s is no longer recognised by itune (I can only restore it or configure it as a new iphone)

    Iphone4s IOS 5.0.1
    Itune 10.5.1
    Mac OSX 10.7.2
    I synchronize several idevices (ipad 2, 2 iphone 3gs & 1 iphone 4s) by wifi with itune
For a few days, i have troubleshooting regarding the iphone4s synchronisation.
By wifi, it doesn't work (no connection between itune and the iphone4s)
When I plugged it, itune recognises the iphone4s as a new device (I can restore it from a backup or i can setup it as a new iphone)
I had already tried to restore it. It worked but when I replugged the iphone4s, itune always proposed to restore it or setup it as a new iphone
If I plug (via USB) my iphone to itune and, on the iphone, i push the wifi synchronisation button, il seems to be ok (the synchronisation runs) and i have a news version of the backup but that's all

I'm not getting the message anymore!
    What I did:
1.- Went to preferences in itunes/ Devices --> erased the corrupted backup (there were two backups)

Usually this is caused by your antivirus or firewall blocking iTunes access to the Internet. It can also occur if the phone is jailbroken or if the computer you are using was ever used to jailbreak an iDevice.

  • IPhone keeps saying connect to iTunes but won't restore what should I do?

I bought a 5C and it was working fine, but needed an update and had the person I bought the phone off had their iCloud still on. I asked them for the password but as he didn't know me he said he didn't trust me so I looked online and it said to force it to restore I should put it in DFU mode then plug it in to iTunes and it will restore. Now it just displays a iTunes logo (in red) and a lightning cable and arrow. Basically telling me to plug the phone into iTunes but i do and it won't restore, i try to restore it and it says error 1, 3,18 or 2006. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! What should I do?

  • Can i back up two seperate devices to itunes? and then restore both to the correct new phones?

Looking to back up two iphone 4s, then restore both tomorrow to the two new iphone 5s, can i do two devices as how will itunes know to differentiate between the two?

First off, they all need to be registered to the same AppleID. Same one you should log into when you start up iTunes.  When you back up in there, preferably storing locally on the computer and not the iCloud, each device creates its own backup file (only one, by default, but that can be changed). Look in iTunes / Preferences / Devices (hover the cursor over each entry for more info).
So yes, you can back up more than one device onto an iTunes setup. When you plug the brand new iPhone for the first time, iTunes will recognize the fact and offer to Restore from a backup, giving you a list to pick from. Which leads us to an issue: you can only restore from a single backup, iTunes has no means of merging two backups into one.
Even if you manually force a Restore, the phone will be wiped before the backup is applied. Hence, no merging occurs.
Edit:  If you want to keep more than a single backup of a phone in iTune's backup library, right-click (or control-click) on any backup in Preferences / Devices. Choose Archive from the popup menu and name the result appropriately. Next time you back up that device, a new file will be created, with the default name.
