3GS on iOS4

I just updated to the latest 4.1 firmware (from 3.1.3), and found out the latest firmware is a total battery killer.
I have wifi, bluetooth, notifications etc turned OFF.
It drained at least 20% more battery compared to the old firmware I had, and the performance of the phone is sluggish.
Is there a way to downgrade back to 3.1.3?

Okay, connecting the dots would lead you to believe that one user, or a few hundred users (being generous) having issues point to a problem in iOS4. Yet the hundreds of thousands of other users (being very conservative, more like millions) of other users with 3GS's running iOS4.1 not experiencing battery issues is a fluke?

IPhone 3GS with iOS4 - voice control does not work any more

Hi - I updated the OS of my iPhone 3GS to iOS4 and everything went well. But ever since I did the update the voice control comes back with strange results when I try to use it. It was working well enough with OS3. Has anybody the same problems and is there a solution?

I'm experiencing basically the same as teardrop3d. I'm Australian (with voice settings on English (Australian)) and my 3Gs had at least 90% accuracy with both calls and music requests.
On iOS4 I've had a single correct result out of at least 30 attempts at using it.
Requesting "play playlist <name>" will often either start calling a seemingly random person from my phone book (different each time anyway) or sometimes a seemingly random number (I don't know where the number comes from, it's not in my phone book). Sometimes it'll actually offer to play music, usually a specific artist (not a playlist) and occasionally a playlist (but so far never the right one).
Requesting "call <name> <number type>" has worked once correctly, but usually just tries to call a seemingly random number from my phone book (or a number I don't know, not in my phonebook...).
As teardrop3d notes, the voice control screen stays up for about 2-4 seconds after I finish talking. It doesn't seem to be recording during this time, as the waveform stops responding to my voice but the screen sits there (with words moving past in the background still) as if its waiting for me to keep talking.
I've tried talking in different accents to no avail, and didn't get any better results with a different English language setting on the Voice Control (I'm not sure if that's actually listening for different accents or just responding in a different accent?)
This feature which I used to use multiple times a day to avoid having to take my phone out of my pocket while walking/riding is now useless. I continue to test it each day to see if it ever works, or if there are any behaviours that change it (e.g. locked vs unlocked or with music playing/not playing when I press/hold the mic-button, etc) but so far haven't found any workarounds.

Upgrating from iPhone 3gs to ios4

Hey I am upgrating from iPhone 3gs to ios4 but I have noticed that the sim card are not the same . I am living in Lebanon middle east theirs isn t any micro sim card by the company but some friends told me that you can cut the old one to fit the ios4 is this true or theirs is another thing I have to do ?

iOS4 is firmware update 4.0, which will be pre-installed on the iPhone 4 and will be available as a firmware update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS on 6/21.
The iPhone 4 uses a micro-SIM card. I've seen some discussion about cutting a standard size SIM card down to the size of a micro-SIM card to be used with an iPad. If your carrier does not provide a micro-SIM card, they must not be an official carrier for the iPhone and if not, you have no other choice but to cut down a standard size SIM card to the size of a micro-SIM card.

Upgrading iPhone 3GS to iOS4 unable to import photos to iPhoto

After upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS4, I am unable to import photos to iPhoto. Also, iPhone does not turn up in iPhoto. Unable to find other ways to import photos from iPhone. No problems importing before upgrade. Anyone with a god solution?

I too had troubles with iPhoto and the iPhone Photo app. They are solved for now. Problem description and action take are as follows.
Problem 1 - Got a new iPhone 4 and upgrade my wife's iPhone 3GS to iOS 4. For both phones, when I connected them to iTunes to sync and selected on the Photo tab to sync my entire iPhoto library, nothing synced to the iPhones.
Solution 1 - I opened iPhoto to ensure my photo collection was indeed there. I closed iPhoto and tried to sync the phones again. This time, the sync took place, taking a long time since the thumbnail photo collection had to be created.
Problem 2 - I knew the photos were on the phones since the sync was complete. On the new iPhone 4, I could see the photos when I selected events or faces or places. The albums tab was blank. On the 3GS, it still looked like there were no photos.
Solution 2 - I shut down the iPhones holding both home key and the power button. I waited a minutes and restarted. Upon restart, both Photo apps displayed my photo collections properly - at least for now.

I just update my iphone 3GS to iOS4 and i found out the sound too soft when i play mp3. I check my volume limit setting but it is on off mode. Can someone tell me about my problem please...
Ow...by the way, i try to adjust the equalizer but totally no effect.

Flash Player for iphone 3gs w/ ios4

Newbee to iphone. Have a 3gs with ios4. I try to view the wather map on weather.com but keeps telling me that i need flash player. Is there a flash player for the iphone. I keep reading online that there is and there isnt one. Any input would be helpfull. thanks.

There is no Flash Player for the iPhone, or iPad, and I'm glad of it. There are many reasons for not wanting a Flash Player, so you may want to search and look -http://mashable.com/2010/04/29/steve-jobs-flash-is-no-longer-necessary/ - here is the gist of it, and it's all true, and I'm speaking from a Network Engineer/Managers point of view and the experience I have had with the nasty little program.
I hate it on my Macs, as well as Winblows computers. HTML5 is going to be the new standard to replace Flash, and more and more sites are adopting it as we speak.
As far as TWC (weather.com) I play the videos all the time, without Flash. Select the Video button at the bottom, and up pops a weather guesser. Maybe some of the linked videos need Flash, but I haven't run across it yet. If I get to a site that needs Flash, I don't need to be there, and I read the text, and move along.

OK. The weird keeps getting weirder. As I said, when I woke up this morning I tried setting up the account again and it worked. It worked all day until I returned home and then it immediately stopped being able to sync. I thought it through and realized that there was something different this morning when I set up the account--I was on the 3G network and not my home wireless network. I deleted the account and tried to re-add, but it failed repeatedly, just like last night. But, when I turned the wi-fi off on the phone and tried to create the account, it worked perfectly.
Is it possible that my home network could be causing a conflict of some kind?
If you're still having trouble, I'd try to turn off the wi-fi and recreate the account. It seems to have worked for me although I suppose it could be a crazy coincidence.

IPod app on 3GS w/iOS4 repeats songs *and* doesn't show time info

3GS and iOS4. iPod will play songs, but will not advance to the next song in a playlist - just keeps repeating the song. Have to manually select the next one.
Also, the play time of a track is not showing now.

That is a problem that many iOS 5 users have experienced. Try unsyncing the songs and resyncing them. Next try restoring from backup.

If the backup and restore takes place properly, you shouldn't have any issue as millions of people have done an update from iOS 4.

How can I update my iPhone 3gs to iOS4, after iOS5 came out?

I am still running iOS 3 (1.3) on my iPhone 3GS and I'm happy with it - but all the new apps requires iOS4 and now I'm sick of this. I want iOS4 (and not iOS5, cause it will drain my battery as far as I've understood).
How can I update my iPhone 3GS in a normal way to iOS4, through iTunes or another easy way? I have never jailbreaked an iPhone so I don't know too much about "backdoors" into my iPhone.

The only Firmware in the iOS 4 series that Apple is still signing for the iPhone 3GS is 4.1. So you could restore to 4.1. You will have to download the 4.1 IPSW from Apple, and then install it with iTunes, Option Click Mac or Shift Click Windoz, on the Restore Button and then select the 4.1 IPSW on your computer. The current iTunes may give meaningless Errors, I doubt because you are Upgrading. But if Error Message is given you will have to search the Web for ways to Exit Recovery.

Most of the Apps should continue to work fine, or be updated soon to work with iOS 4. Developers have had access to it for a long time, giving them chance to update their Apps if necessary.

IPhone 3GS and iOS4 problems! PLEASE help!!

yesterday i updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3GS. everything was going well except my iphone would restart whenever it liked.
so i connected to iTunes & decided to restore it back to its factory settings to try and resolve the issue. now, the iphone screen says connect to itunes with the picture of the usb and itunes. and when i try to restore, "unknown error 29" comes up.
i don't know what to do anymore.

Ok this is wat happened to my iPhone 3GS after I opted to upgrade to iOS4.0:
After the upgrade file finished downloading, the installation process got initiated. However, after a few minutes, the process crashed throwing up an Error 1602. My phone just displayed the connect to itunes logo. I did a hard reset (by pushing the home button & the power on/off button simultaneously) and the phone entered the recovery mode (or DFU or watever it is called). I reopened itunes and connected the iphone again. This time, I was told that the phone has been detected on recovery mode. I clicked RESTORE & it told me that the phone would be restored to factory settings,which I chose. The recovery process started and after a coupla minutes, I got another error. This time it was Error 1601.
After spending a good 2 hrs researching the internet, I found the solution that did work for me. Here goes...U would need another computer for this (not the one u have been using to sync ur iphone with):
1) Install itunes 9.2 on another computer.
2) Connect ur iphone (while it displays the connect to itunes logo).
3) itunes will detect an iphone on recovery mode.
4) Click Restore. itunes will tell u that ur phone can be restored to factory settings. Choose OK.
5) itunes will automatically download iOS 4.0
6) once the download is complete, installation of iOS 4 should start immediately. if for some weird reason it doesnt initiate, press shift+restore and select the installation file (it is located in C:\Documenst & Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\itunes\iphone software updates\xxxxx.ipsw )
7) Once u've selected this file, installation will start & ull get a progress bar on ur iphone as well.
8) The installation should come around fine & after a coupla automatic reboots, ur iPhone should now be up & running with iOS 4.0
9) Itunes will ask you to name ur iphone. at this point, eject the iphone from the computer & connect it to the other computer (the one which u previously used to sync the iphone with). open itunes & ull get 2 options: Create a new iphone or restore backup from "Sandy's iPhone" [ur iphone's name]. Choose the 2nd option & watch ur iphone being restored with all ur backup.\
10) once the sync is complete, eject & enjoy iOS 4

3Gs on iOS4.0.1, home screen spacing all messed up

Has anyone seen this? Even before I installed my jailbreak apps, the screen formatting was messed up. There is nearly no spacing between the first row apps names and the app icons on the second row. This goes all the way down, and leaves about an inch of space BELOW the dock bar (and thus it is no longer my DOCK bar) and the bottom of the screen. Also, the spacing between the home screen dots and bottom line of the apps names on line 4 and the dock screen is almost non-existent.

If other apps slow to a crawl and even phone use and keyboard entry gets erratic, double click the home button, tap and hold on one of the icons now revealed in multitasking mode until they jiggle. Then close the apps one by one to free up memory.
This is a kludge caused by the apps not cleaning up after themselves, and I dislike having do it multiple times a day, but without it I would waste even more time bringing the device back to Apple for a permanent fix. One can only hope.
Currently raging mad at Apple iOS4.02 for breaking the iPod playback of the 3GS via AV amp (Pioneer VSX-23TXH in U.S.). Trust totally lost. Never "upgrade" without a way back. Jailbreak suddenly looks desirable.
Just yesterday wife bought an iPad for me, still unopened. Feel like returning it as-is in the box and wait for the German designed WeTab (started as WePad earlier).

No persistent WiFi on 3GS running iOS4

One of the new feature on iOS4 is Persistent wifi even after you lock the phone. This is great for me since I'm on the 200Mb/mon data plan, and my iPhone 3GS is doing alot of background activities that consumes data while I'm at sleep, for example: fetch emails, push alerts, Exchange push...
What I've noticed after a month of iOS4 use is that the persistent wifi doesn't work as advertised, sometimes it works, but most of the time it disconnects me from wifi a moment after I locked the screen.
Anyone has answer to that? Is there an option to enable/disable the persistent wifi?

Basics from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore. Have these been tried at all?

Push notification not working in Mail on 3GS after iOS4 update

My auto notification of email has stopped working on my 3GS after I updated to iOS4. I have a MobileMe subscription and it works fine on my G5, MacBook Pro and iPad.
Not sure why it is refusing to work on my iPhone 3GS. Is anybody else experiencing this issue?
