3GS phone is stuck on "connect to iTunes" graphic, iTunes doesn't recognize it

During IOS 5 upgade process, after iTunes performed backup and wipe, screen went to "connect to iTunes" graphic, however, iTunes will not recognize it.  I can't perform a restore until I can get iTunes to recognize it.  Can someone give me detailed directions, please?  I have tried various steps directed by Apple on Apple Support page to no avail.  As suggested by others, I have done the "hold buttons down" trick to no avail.  I have removed all Apple software and reinstalled iTunes 10.5 multiple times to no avail.  I have tried different cables.  I have tried different ports. I have created different windows users on laptop.  I have tried to restore drivers but it says that no drivers exist.  I am running my computer with no add-ons and with nothing loading on initial startup.  I have disabled all security software and settings.  I have spent hours on here and on various websites through internet searches, reading various posts/threads and have tried everything I have seen suggested.  I have no Apple Store within 200 miles of me.  I'm at my wit's end with this.  Fwiw, I purchased an iPad 2 approx. 3-months ago and have never been able to get iTunes to recognize it.  Highly discouraged with these products to say the least.  If anyone has any suggestions other than what I've already mentioned above, please let me know.  Thanks in advance.
computer: windows xp; sp3
iphone: 3GS
iTunes: 10.5

Thanks, but yes I've tried that.  That was what I was referring to above when I said I tried the "hold the buttons down" trick.  I appreciate your response.
Additional info:  My computer recognizes it; computer makes a "chime" noise when I plug and unplug it from the USB port.

  • While updating to 8.1, not enough memory: phone is stuck in update, PC/iTunes doesn't recognize phone.  Help!

I tried downloading 8.1 wirelessly(!).  No warning about not enough memory.  Software downloaded by would not load in phone (4S) - cell antenna went into permanent "search" mode(?).  Took phone to PC to download videos to make room for IOS 8.1.  iTunes does not recognize the phone.  Was able to delete most videos using PC "my computer" and browsing to those files.  Phone then allowed me to load 8.1, but now it is stuck on a black screen with the iTunes logo telling me to connect to iTunes:  only iTunes still won't recognize the phone!  Phone is frozen on this screen.  Global reset (power + home button) only turns phone off briefly, then returns to this eternal screen of death.

  • Phone is stuck on connect to itunes screen

For some reason today my phone is stuck on the connect to iPhone screen. I've held down the home and off/on button and it'll go to the apple logo screen and then back to the itunes screen. Its the original iPhone. I've tried to connect to iTunes and it says its in recovery mode and my option is to restore. I really don't want to do that. Please help.
    Liz

If it's offering you recovery mode then it sounds like the OS firmware has been corrupted, when was the last time you had a successful sync to iTunes?
if its quite recently then doing a recovery restore won't loose much data on you.

  • My phone is stuck on "connect to itunes" phase and it wont do anything!

My phone is stuck on the "connect to iphone" picture. I have the Silver iPhone 5s. It is 16 GB. I have sprint service. iOS 7.1.1 I am trying to update to iOS 7.1.2. I have tried all of Apples "tactics" to find out how to fix it. I happened when I was trying to restore my phone.

Try on another computer with another USB cable.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Tried downloading new ios, now my phone is in recovery mode, and iTunes doesn't recognize my phone.

I have an iPhone 5. I was on ios 6.0.1. and tried to update to the new software via my computer (a PC). I received an error mid-download and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode. However, my iTunes does not even recognize my phone or that it's in recovery mode. I've downloaded the most recent version of iTunes as well.

Place the device in DFU mode (google it) then restore.

First I understand your frustration I have had a butt load of problems with my phone ok now plug into iTunes and hold the power button and the home button down at the same time till iTunes says that it has found a phone in restore mode follow the on screen prompts to restore your phone I had this same problem and that worked for me they had an emergency meeting a week ago about thease problems hopefully a fix is coming soon I don't think that they want to lose their #1 phone status I know how you feel I pucker every time I go to sync my phone I hope this helps you.

  • My iPod Touch 4 is stuck in recovery mode & iTunes doesn't recognize it

I ran an IOS Software Update on my Ipod Touch 4, during which the Ipod totally locked up. Then the iTunes icon appeared on the screen, with a power cord symbol. I plugged it into the computer, and opened up iTunes. iTunes said the iPod was in recovery mode and that it could only open it if it was restored. I ran restore, which I was very hesitant to do; but I had no other option.  It took a very long time, but appeared to be working properly, no error messages appeared during the restore. It took hours to restore.. At the end of the restore process, I expected the iPod to reboot or another screen to come up on the iTunes page on the PC. Instead, nothing changed. The iTunes page stayed the same, the iPod stayed the same, with the same "iTunes" screen. After an hour,  I unplugged it.  I went online for a solution, followed the instructions to put it into DFU mode after iTunes quit recognizing it altogether when I plug it in. The iPod screen is still stuck on the "recovery mode" screen.  I have the most current version of iTunes on the PC, running it on a Windows PC with Vista.  I love my iPod and ran the software update for maintenance, and instead it locked it up and made it unusable.  It is no longer covered under warranty. I tried the health check with Apple, but they can't communicate with the iPod because it's in recovery mode.  Please help!  I live in a town with no Apple store.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My phone is stuck in "connect to itunes" screen and will not budge. I did the recovery thing and it still will not change. PLease  help.

    Hello Melanie229,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
Based on what you are describing I would next connect the phone to the wall charger that it came with, and reset it.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If your device stops responding, you can reset it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Then try the restore again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • HT201263 iPhone 4S Stuck on 'Connect to iTunes' during 7.1.1 update

Hi, I was updating the lastest software 7.1.1 OTA, available on iPhone 4S while it was on charging, as battery was below 50%. But during in between update, the phone got stuck on 'connect to iTunes'.
Unfortunately, I dont have an PC or Mac book where I could download and connect to itune.
Is there any alternate to get this sorted. Will I loose my contacts? Photos/videos? etc?
    Kind regards

    Hello SamuelXavier427,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
First, I'd like you to just simply reset your device by following the steps in the article below, in case you accidentally entered recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the issue does persist, then you will need to connect your iPhone to a computer, and using iTunes restore it.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • Phone stuck on connect to itunes screen after update attempt

Hi, hope someone can help me. I connected my iPhone to my computer to transfer my photos from the phone to the PC. I have automatic syncing turned off.
When I connected, I was prompted to update the iTunes version, which I did. It's now version 9. Then I attempted to update the iPhone version. I got a message saying I had to transfer my purchases first, which I did. Then I tried the update again. The update seemed to take awhile, then I got a message saying it failed. There was a "More Information" button which just prompted me to send info to Apple, which I did. Unfortunately I didn't save the info.
At that point all my iPhone info no longer showed in iTunes, and the only active option is Restore. It does say "Your iPhone software is up to date," which would seem to indicate that the update did work...I tried disconnecting and reconnecting my phone. When I do this, I get the message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."
I would rather not Restore the phone unless I have no other options, since I have 600 pics, contacts, etc on the phone...Of course not backed up since this is the first time I've tried to transfer data.
So I tried a few things:
    - I disconnected and reconnected the phone several times.
    - I restarted the computer several times.
    - I went to the Apple site and tried the troubleshooting steps for "stuck on connect to itunes screen" (which is what my phone is currently doing).
    - I ran the diagnostic checks in iTunes (output below - I ran this while the phone was plugged in yet it says it's not found).
    - I held down the Home and the Sleep/Wake button until I see the Apple icon.
    - I went to My Computer > Manage and tried to update drivers, but the phone doesn't show in the device manager.
    - I tried a different USB port and there are no other devices connected to the machine.
Nothing worked, my phone is stuck on the connect to iTunes screen and I get the error message every time I plug it in. I haven't tried another computer bc I don't have one and I'm not sure how to create/use another user account on this machine.
I wouldn't mind calling support but my phone doesn't work...Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your only choice at this point is to restore your iphone. Since it appears from your post that you have never synced to this computer, you of course will not have a backup to restore from. That means your only choice is to restore as a new device & re-sync your itunes content. Unfortunately, all of your contacts, calendars, pics in your camera roll, etc., will be lost. Its not a good idea to use the iphone or any phone for that matter as a storage device, as things like this can & do happen. You should be syncing on a regular basis. The first thing done when you do sync is an iphone backup. You should also transfer pics in your camera roll to a supported application on your computer on a regular basis, much like any digital camera. You can always sync pics back to your phone, but if the only copies are on the phone, you run the risk of losing them.
See if you can force the phone into recovery mode:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.
